Many works of literature and learning were produced by authors, editors, or translators who were not the only author, editor, or translator in their family, but who were joined by one or more others, whether predecessors, contemporaries, or descendants. Of 2,239 literary producers identified as being born in ‘France’ between 1450 and 1600 (or as being born elsewhere but spending much of their life in ‘France’), at least 503 were from families of literary producers. A high proportion of the 503, probably about two in five, belonged at some point in their lives to the nobility. About 7 per cent of the 503 were female. But that quantitative picture does not capture the whole of literary production within families, particularly by women. The present survey is of the production of literary and/or learned works and should not be taken as a proxy for levels of literary and learned activity.

Russian Formalist theory argued that biography should be studied scientifically as the history of form, rather than as a history of personalities, ideas, or content. In other words, the study of literature is not philosophy, sociology, theology, or mythology, but an exact science of the primary matter of text: the word, the language, the speech, and the stylistic device. Biographies of authors were thought of as belonging to the separate ‘series’ parallel to the evolution of literature. However, in practice, the lives and times of the writers were often found not so much to run parallel to as to be contingent upon the texts they produce, in a way that made it increasingly difficult to preserve the clinical purity of the ‘science’ of literature. Hence, to deal with this, Formalists formulated new terms such as ‘literary facts’ and ‘literary milieu’. This chapter discusses Yury Tynyanov, who sought to distinguish his books about the writers' lives from his ‘scientific’ works of theory and research by writing them in the form of novels that were closely associated with film scenarios and historical fiction. It examines his Pushkin, an unfinished biography that culminated his achievements and which marked the beginning of the merging of literary-historical research, biography, and fiction.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the novel “The Life of Arseniev” and the novella “Mahogany” by contemporaries-authors Ivan Bunin and Boris Pilnyak, respectively. Although written in the same period, these two multi-faceted literary works were produced in different historical and cultural contexts. The purpose is to identify the underlying characteristics that they share in order to define an invariant model of the “topos of the country estate” in Russian literature on the cusp of the 1920s and 1930s. The conclusion that can be drawn is that, despite the diametrically opposed political milieus in which the two authors operated — Bunin was an émigré writer of the first wave; Pilnyak was a Soviet writer — in both works the country estate posits itself not only as the cultural space encompassing the history of the Russian state as a whole, but also as the chronicle of the private lives of the people who lived in it, the very quintessence of their being and a covenant for future generations.

Abstract:
The experiences of children during the process of migration are explored with reference to the Great Atlantic Migration, specifically the Jewish immigration from Eastern Europe around the turn of the 20th century. These experiences, as recorded by them later in their lives, are also represented in literary works penned by immigrant and second-generation authors. The subjective and representational aspects of child-immigrant lives add substance and perspective to an array of social data available about that era, including the proportion of children and youth in the migration stream, the effect of mass immigration on social services (including public education), employment of children and youth in industry, and welfare and institutional care. The article asserts that child-immigrants can be studied not only from the perspective of achievement outcomes in American society, as is currently common in the literature, but also in terms of assigning child-immigrants a separate voice in the historiography of U.S. migration.
