AbstractUnivision, historically the number one Spanish network, departed from its long tradition of safeguarding neutral Spanish to embrace not only English, but also Spanglish and Spanish-Caribbean accents in 2015. This article explores Univision’s new linguistic flexibility via two emblematic reality TV shows: Nuestra Belleza Latina (2007–) and La Banda (2015–). Through a textual analysis of these shows and industrial analysis of the strategies deployed by the network, the authors argue that Univision’s targeting of “billennials”—bicultural and bilingual millennials—prompted a linguistic flexibility that challenges the traditional lineup of neutral, Spanish-only, television, and is more inclusive of Latina/o audiences’ language use.

Abstract:
This article is dedicated to the expression of the main concepts of the historic issue “The Black Legend” in the modern public Spanish language on the material of the publications of two authors, J. Marias and J. Cercas, in the Sunday supplement to the newspaper “El País”. It deals the historically marked notion artificially introduced into the circulation during the next two centuries by the countries-enemies of Spain on the political stage and it influenced the attitude of the other countries and even the population of Spain itself to their Motherland and to themselves. Being the historical issue it was spread by the mean of written word o by published pamphlets and its influence can still be noticed even in the modern qualified press.“The resonances” of those remote ideas impregnate the opinion-based journalism of the famous Spanish writers, persons with the high level of education and culture, with great number of literary awards and dozens of novels, whose thoughts are respected by the great number of readers.Among the main columns of “The Black Legend”there are four key positions: anti-propaganda of political, economic and religious spheres of Spanish society’s life; attributing to the main figures of Spanish history only negative features like imperfections, failures which turned to refer to the whole Spanish society; discreditation of the intellectual part of the country and, themost painful, its support and approval by other European intellectuals of that time like Voltaire or Montesquieu. Even nowadays there are numerous investigations and publications by foreign authors that echo the old “The Black Legend” trying to depreciate or minimize the role of Spanish power in the world history.

Abstract:
The article reflects the views of Spanish writers and poets who are fans of bullfighting. The authors spoke about the importance of bullfighting in Spanish culture and literature. The works written about bullfighting are investigated. The article especially deals with the concepts of “bull” and “bullfighter” from the lexical units of bullfighting, widely used in Spanish literature. Based on examples from the authors, the place of the concepts of “bull” and “bullfighter” in Spanish thought is explored. In the works, the bull is metaphorically described as “wild”, “strong”, “dangerous”, “quick”, “brave”. The characteristics of the bullfighters, such as “proud”, “handsome”, “brave”, “winner”, “professional person who earns good money", “famous” in Spanish thought, are also successfully reflected in the works of Spanish authors. Abstract:
The subject of the study is the stylistic functions of Spanish adverbs with the suffix -mente in modern Spanish based on the analysis of corpus contexts of works of Spanish prose of the XXI century. The analysis of functional features was based on the theoretical positions of the authors of domestic and foreign grammars of the Spanish language, works on linguistics. Adverbs with the formant - mente are grammatically multifunctional elements that are polysemantic lexical units that have the ability to acquire additional connotations in collocations with other parts of speech. Stylistic possibilities of adverbial units help to solve such author's tasks as assessment, characterization of characters, achievement of expressiveness of the text and imagery of the narrative. The novelty of the study lies in the fact that for the first time examples from the corpus of the Spanish language of the XXI century were analyzed, the names of the authors of which are well known to the Russian-speaking reader (Carlos Ruiz Safon), or practically unknown at all (Anton Castro, Diego Torron). The result of the study was the conclusion that the formant -mente has not lost its productivity at the current stage of language development and is a characteristic feature of the artistic style of the modern Spanish language. The findings have both scientific significance for theoretical research in the field of morphology of the Spanish language, and practical value for translators of Spanish prose.

Abstract:
Spanish physicians have made important contributions to the nosology of headaches by describing various syndromes. In 1954, Eduardo Tolosa Colomer published the first case of Tolosa-Hunt syndrome, a clinical picture characterized by orbital pain and paralysis of extraocular muscles due to the presence of granulomatous inflammation in the cavernous sinus. In 1980, José Félix Martí Massó described pseudomigraine with cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis, which manifests with episodes of migraine-type headache, transient neurological deficits, and elevated lymphocytes in the cerebrospinal fluid, usually with a benign prognosis. Since 2002, Juan Pareja and his group have identified several entities including: nummular headache, characterized by pain localized in a small coin-shaped area of the skull; primary trochlear headache, originating in the trochlea, in the superointernal angle of the orbit; epicrania fugax, which manifests with episodes of paroxysmal pain radiating along the surface of the head, following a linear or zigzag trajectory, and idiopathic ophthalmodynia and rhinalgia, which present with pain in the eyeball or nose with no apparent cause. Juan Pareja has also described several trigeminal terminal branch neuralgias, which are characterized by pain limited to the corresponding cutaneous territory and which typically respond to anesthetic blockade of the nerve. Finally, paroxysmal pressing headache, described by the same author, is manifested by brief episodes of unilateral pressing pain without accompanying symptoms. All these descriptions have been documented in scientific publications, and most of them have had a significant impact on clinical practice.

Abstract:
This thesis is centred on Gabriel García Márquez’s novel El amor en los tiempos del cólera, Álvaro Mutis’ novella La última escala del Tramp Steamer, and Juan Rulfo’s novel Pedro Páramo. Its aim is to analyse how the works of these Spanish American authors are inscribed within the traditions of Tristan, Don Juan and other related stories. Analysis is rooted in three aspects: 1) the study of the language and style conventions in the initial works of romance and courtly love that are developed in the studied works on fiction. 2) It was crucial to see how the authors in question developed paradigms of gender relations through the traditions they borrowed, and 3) how the medieval and renaissance traditions relate to Spanish American literary discourse through matters of similar religious and social contexts, specific traits of Spanish colonization and the presence of medievalisms in modernity. García Márquez’s reinvention of the Don Juan through the alliance narrator-Florentino, Mutis’ depiction of the steamer as a symbol of love and poetry, Rulfo’s portrayal of the lover’s spiritual failure and Susana San Juan’s statements and redemption through her body, show the complexity with which medieval romances have been rewritten in twentieth century Latin America.

Abstract:
This dissertation provides a feminist reading of the works of Latin American women writers since the decade of the sixties to the present who focus on the particular historical moment of their times from a political perspective. A systematic study of the narrative figure in novels by Dora Alonso, Elena Poniatowska, Claribel Alegria and Darwin Flakoll, and Isabel Allende, reveals an awareness of the undercurrents of oppression existent in their societies based on racial and class stereotypes with a growing understanding of oppression based on sex. From the perspective of the female narrator in Tierra Inerme by the Cuban writer Dora Alonso, the Cuban social structure before 1959 is condemned for its inequality on the basis of class, race, and sex. However, the perspective of the narrator reveals that she has not entirely escaped the prejudices that permeate her society concerning women. Hasta no verte Jesus mio, by the Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska concentrates on the testimony of Jesusa Palancares who condemns the structural inequality existent in Mexican society. Although Palancares' perspective reveals an awareness of the unequal treatment of women, because of her underprivileged status she concentrates on oppression based on class. In Cenizas de Izalco by Darwin Flakoll from the United States and the Salvadoran Claribel Alegria, the 1931 massacre of the peasants in El Salvador is condemned. However, through the contrasting perspectives of the male and female narrators, oppression on the basis of sex is most emphasized. La casa de los espiritus by the Chilean Isabel Allende depicts brutal class, racial and sexual oppression in Chile from the 1920's to 1973. It is in this novel that sexual oppression is portrayed most vividly, again through the contrasting perspectives of the male and female narrators. Although a growing awareness of sexual oppression emerges in the novels studied becoming most emphatic in this decade through an awakening feminist consciousness, the perspective of the narrators emphasize to varying degrees the importance of solidarity among women to combat injustice of every form to achieve a more equitable existence for all oppressed people.

Abstract:
Juan Marse is generally acknowledged to be one of Spain's leading writers, his work having achieved both critical acclaim and popular success. Despite this author's extensive use of references and allusion to, and quotations from, others' texts, previous research on Marse's novels has largely ignored the important role played by intertextuality in his work. This thesis explores Marse's use of others' texts in five of his later novels, viz. Ultimas tardes con Teresa (1965), La oscura historia de in prima Montse (1970), Si to diesen que cai (1973), La muchacha de las bragas de oro (1978) and Un dia volvere (1982). A general overview of theories of intertextuality is followed by a detailed discussion of Gerard Genette's theory of hypertextuality, as discussed in his work Palimpsestes: La litterature au second degre (1982). It is his theoretical model and terminology, together with insights from Linda Hutcheon's book, A Theory of Parody: The Teachings of Twentieth-Century Art Forms (1985), which inform the detailed analysis of Marse's novels which makes up the greater part of this thesis. This analysis focusses on Marse's extensive hypertextual use not only of literary texts but also of films, pictures, comic books and song lyrics. It also examines the ways in which Marse signals the presence of these borrowed texts to his readers and considers the connections in his work between metafiction and hypertextuality. It is argued in conclusion that hypertextual analysis of Marsd's later novels reveals hidden dimensions in the author's work not previously commented on in other critical studies of Marse's fiction.

AbstractAround 1800, merchants, scientists and adventurers travelled to Latin America with different purposes. Their multifaceted interests in a world region, experiencing a threshold of independence from Spanish colonial rule, inspired new historical and political works about the continent’s recent past. The Enlightenment provided not only the philosophical armamentarium against corruption, but it also paved the way to a new expression of sentiments and to the loss of fear when addressing injustice. Some examples of these are Hipólito Villaroel’s list of grievances and Humboldt’s Political essay. These two authors provide some thoughts on the political landscape of New Spain (now Mexico), while the two Swiss physicians Rengger and Longchamp describe the ruthless and odd dictator Francia of independent Paraguay as a champion of anti-corruption. Finally, Argentine dictator Rosas—and his robberies as described by Rivera Indarte, Sarmiento and other anonymous authors—represent the embodiment of corruption through pure larceny, for whose crimes the Spanish colonial past apparently no longer served as a comparison.

Abstract:
While Countess Emilia Pardo Bazán (1851-1921), a successful novelist, an essayist and a champion of women’s rights in Spain, was not a translator of Russian literature (although she was a very talented linguist and translated from many languages into Spanish), she was the first, and without doubt, the greatest popularizer of Russian literature in Spain and later in Spanish America. Through her three public lectures given in Madrid in 1887, which she later published as a book, she gave, first to her audience and then to Spanish readers in general, an excellent overview of Russian culture and literature––and this in a highly original and creative manner. Wherever possible, Pardo Bazán endeavoured to suggest meaningful and relevant links between the Spanish and Russian literatures; she always provided full and clear biographical materials about the Russian writers she was presenting as well as detailed and lively analyses of their works. Sadly, her valuable contribution to this field has been ignored or, at best, it has been defined as of historical interest only. In 2021, the anniversary of her death, not a single commemorative event in Madrid focussed on her outstanding work as cultural intermediary between Spain and Russia. This essay aims to redress this balance somewhat by showing that Pardo Bazán bequeathed to Spanish readers a well-informed and carefully-researched body of critical studies of Russian literature. Additionally, the influence of certain Russian authors on her own fiction, as I suggest, constitutes an important task for future scholars. Almost entirely due to Pardo Bazán’s pioneering work as the major popularizer of Russian literature in Spain, the first wave of direct translations of Russian writers into Spanish began to appear shortly after the publication of her lectures.

Abstract:
Research on interpreters as authors of autobiographies has typically focused on the interpreting activity in authoritarian regimes, in trials, or diplomacy. A great number of the author-interpreters portray a hero figure positioned in often close relationship with the person in power. This chapter deals with another kind of interpreter figure who I will call “anti-hero”. The settings explored are the Great War, the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War, and Nazi concentration camps, as depicted in the interpreters’ memoirs. The chapter aims to elaborate on the main features of these anti-hero interpreters based on the framework proposed by Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson (2010), who suggest a set of concepts helpful for understanding the dynamic processes of autobiographical subjectivity, including memory, experience, or agency.

A bibliographic search of raw data signed by at least one Spanish author and published in the period 2011-2021 was carried out using the Data Citation Index. This study revealed a total of 2,693 registers from 2,679 authors, being Gene Expression Omnibus, the main repository used.

Abstract:
The authors of this paper explore the geography of power in South America as expressed by Spain and Portugal in their different patterns of development in colonial America. The paper outlines the political position of each country during the Age of Discovery, the political attitudes of each and the resultant urban morphologies and spatial organizations developed by each colonial power. A close examination of two South American colonial cities one Spanish, one Portuguese-reveals that the Spanish urban pattern promoted a hierarchy of interconnected cities of gridded layout, with key state and religious functions strategically located in relationship to the plaza. Portugal, in contrast, created a series of isolated commercial-military towns, of informal morphology with key state and religious functions distributed according to topography. Two case studies of Spanish and Portuguese colonial cities clearly illustrate the divergent policies and patterns of spatial control of these two important colonizing powers of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Abstract:
Basque literature and cinema have made use of and re-appropriated the Spanish classic text Lazarillo on several occasions and, thus, have participated in its continuation in different cultural and historical contexts. At present, the Basque cultural field counts with a Spanish-Basque bilingual version of the Lazarillo published in 1929 in which "Orixe", the translator, adapts and rewrites some passages of the work both in Spanish and Basque. We also count with a critical reedition of the aforementioned version published by A. Zelaieta in 1984, as well as with a comic created by Cornejo y Fuente and translated into Basque by J. A. Berriotxoa (1990). Finally, we count with a cinematographic adaptation of 2012 by J. Berasategi. In this short essay we comment on all those versions of the Lazarillo, contextualizing their publication in order to understand why their authors created those versions and the reasons for the adaptations, censored passages, specific graphic ingredients or other elements that characterize the versions and make visible the intertextual dialogue created among the versions of the Lazarillo.

Abstract:
Literature review shows that little research has done so far to estimate how tourism indicators are affected by new HSR lines. In 2012, a multivariate panel analysis developed by Chen and Haynes was applied to the Chinese regions to quantify the HSR impact on tourism output. The Chinese experience confirmed that, during the period 1999-2010, emerging high speed rail services did have significant positive impacts on boosting tourism in China. Since them, no similar empirical tool has ever been tested in Europe. The aim of this paper is to analyze and validate the suitability of this tool to assess empirically the effects of HSR on Spanish tourism during the period 1999-2014, and to enhance the abovementioned model with a tourism database. With more than 20 years’ HSR experience, and operating the longest HSR network in Europe (2,900 km), Spain offers a good scenario for this model application because Spanish tourism sector represents 10.2% of its gross domestic product (GDP). Results clearly show that there is a direct linkage between the evolution of certain Spanish tourism outputs and the construction of the HSR network. However, authors´ recommendations include future new research on some variables limitations like the type of tourism output considered or the consideration of alternative explanatory indicators.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/CIT2016.2016.3607

Abstract:
The mobility of university students abroad is a phenomenon of great importance in the context of globalization and internationalization of higher education. Certain factors, such as the image of the institution, the country, the city, the evaluation of the study program, the cost, selection processes and even personal resources can determine the destination country. This article seeks to identify the attraction factors for which Brazilian university students choose Spanish universities to carry out their higher education. An exploratory study of a qualitative nature was conducted, a semi-structured questionnaire applied to twenty-eight Brazilian students of official rank: graduation, master's degree and doctorate. Data analysis was based on the assessment of attraction factors. The results indicate that the language, the tradition of the Spanish universities, the scholarships of the country of origin and the more flexible selection processes are important factors in the decision of these subjects. Spain is an option for many international students and the flow of Brazilian students to this country is significant, the authors also consider that these flows may be much larger in the future.

Abstract:
Spain and Portugal share a common track gauge, different from the European standard gauge, and they have come to have 5 rail connections of which only 3 are currently active. On the two disused connections two different programs have developed for their respective protection, conservation, and valuation in the service of society. In the Spanish province of Salamanca, the route from the railway station of Boadilla-Fuente de San Esteban to the Portuguese border. This route has been recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) since 2000 and has been preserved including all the infrastructure and a good part of the railway superstructure. The Camino de Hierro program, at the final section, is a route of 17 km, conditioned for walking, crossing the Natural Park of Arribes del Duero. The program is managed by public initiative of the Diputación de Salamanca. On the other hand, we have the railway connection from Caceres to Valencia de Alcantara (last Spanish town) that then crosses into Portugal through Marvão-Beirã (first Portuguese station) to Torre das Vargens, where it connects with the route currently in use from Badajoz, through Elvas to main station of Entroncamento. Between the first two Portuguese stations, a private initiative (Rail Bike Marvão) has launched a program to make this 15 km route traversable on pedal-operated platforms on the railway and crossing the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. This paper analyses both initiatives, identifying their strengths and weaknesses and the strategies employed as examples of good reference practices for similar initiatives, in order to identify key aspects which will be part of the criteria that the authors want to define as the initial phase of a methodology for the application of decision-making techniques in the management of these kind of assets.

Literature on traineeships recognizes beneficial effects on its main agents: students, employers, and higher education institutions. Furthermore, some authors have identified added effects when applying new technologies to the business internship experience, specially referred to improved computer skills and learning outcomes. The Faculty of Business Administration and Management of the Universitat Politècnica de València has had a remarkable increase of internships over the past years. As computer skills are being more demanded by employers in a globalized and technological world, it is expected that virtual placements and ICTs in the internship practice will be a trend in universities in the up-coming years. The management of internships of the two new Double Degrees in the Faculty of Business: Business Administration and Management + Computer Science Engineering, and Business Administration and Management + Telecommunications Engineering, could provide the perfect scenario to put into practice and to explore the possibilities of new technologies applied to internships. The recent change in the Spanish law and in the regulations of universities, such as the Universitat Politècnica de València, allows business internships to take place abroad. This could also provide an opportunity for innovation and growth, if combining internationalization with virtualization of internships.

Abstract. In the present contribution the coupling effect of the railway track on the dynamic response of single-track bridges with several simply-supported spans is investigated. The response of such structures is of interest due to the possible appearance of high vertical accelerations at the platform, with adverse consequences such as ballast deconsolidation, loss of track stability etc., especially at resonance. Single track railway bridges due to their inherent low mass and damping, are especially critical in this regard.This paper provides a detailed sensitivity analysis over a single track railway bridge catalogue considering lengths of interest from 10 to 25 meters with different typologies: concrete filler beam and concrete slab decks, taking into account and neglecting the vertical flexibility of elastic bearings. To this end, a 2D Finite Element numerical model is implemented admitting a three-layer discrete representation of the track components mass, stiffness and damping, based on [1].The effect of the track on the bridge acceleration response is evaluated. A parametric analysis is presented with the aims of (i) detecting the track parameters that affect the most the bridge vertical acceleration response under railway traffic and (ii) determining what bridges are the most affected by the rigidity and the damping induced by the track components. Additionally, the effect of including several isostatic spans in the model is also evaluated with the goal of concluding where the maximum response occurs and what models are on the safe side.In addition, the experimental response of a real two-span railway bridge belonging to the Spanish railway conventional network is presented under operating conditions. The bridge modal properties identified in a previous work by the authors [2] are employed and the previously described numerical model is calibrated and used to simulate the structural response under railway traffic.Finally, preliminary conclusions are extracted regarding the coupling effect of the track components both at resonant and not resonant conditions.

A growing interest in Two-Way Bilingual Immersion (TWBI) programs has led to increased attention to bilingualism, biliteracy, and biculturalism. This article describes the writing development in Spanish and English for 49 kindergarten students in a 50/50 Two-Way Bilingual Immersion program. Over the course of an academic year, the authors collected writing samples to analyze evidence of cross-linguistic resource sharing using a grounded theoretical approach to compare and contrast writing samples to determine patterns of cross-linguistic resource sharing in English and Spanish. The authors identified four patterns: phonological, syntactic, lexical, and metalinguistic awareness. Findings indicated that emergent writers applied similar strategies as older bilingual students, including lexical level code-switching, applied phonological rules of L1 to their respective L2s, and used experiential and content knowledge to write in their second language. These findings have instructional implications for both English Learners and native English speakers as well as for learning from students for program improvement.

Review question / Objective: Autofluorescence (AF) and Indocyanine Green Fluorescence (ICG) were used for the first time for parathyroid gland (PG) identification in 2011 and 2015, respectively, during thyroidectomy/parathyroidectomy. Authors reported promising results. We aim to understand the efficacy, technical challenges, cost-effectiveness, and impact on postoperative biochemical and clinical outcomes of such new techniques. Eligibility criteria: The language filter was set to allow for publications in English, German, Spanish, and French assessing the use of ICG and/or AF for PG identification. Only titles and abstracts, followed by the full text dating from 2008 to 2020 have been considered in this review. Existing systematic reviews were excluded from the results.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on the Japanese students’ learning process when they study Spanish as a second language. First, it mentions some students’ profile characteristic and their interests in learning a new language. Second, it describes the learning language system in Japan, the students’ behavior in the language classes, and which activities they prefer to do in class. In addition, it describes different kinds of learning methods that could be applied depending on the students’ interests and cultural differences. Finally, the author considers that teaching Spanish to Japanese students raises several issues that have to be attended in order to achieve success. Since learning a language implies hard work and effort, teachers must try different methods and approaches relying upon scientific evidence based on one fundamental assumption: people learn by doing things themselves.

This policy brief delves into France’s strategy for managing Islamist terrorists and radicalized prisoners (2015-2023). The first part spans the evolution of challenges within the French prison system, covering the return of foreign terrorist fighters (FTFs) and responses to terrorist attacks carried out between 2015 and 2018. The second part details key approaches for managing radicalised inmates, encompassing assessment, prison regimes, rehabilitation, monitoring, and post-release reintegration. The last section explains why it was necessary to identify the Salafi-jihadism threat to tailor prison approaches specifically to this ideology. The recommendations underscore the importance of effective communication regarding the necessity to tailor prison regimes to levels of violent radicalisation while upholding human rights. Finally, the policy brief advocates adapting counter-terrorism strategies to address Salafi-Jihadi ideology. The analysis presented in this paper draws upon the professional experience of its author, who in prisons has dedicated six years to working in P/CVE within the French prison system, as well as insights gathered from open-source materials.

Abstract:
The article analyzes Olegario González de Cardedal’s views on journalistic mission, that he interprets as a “ministry”. For him, a journalist is the minister of the word, the creator and the interpreter of events, the spokesperson of human being and the witness of human hope. For the Spanish Catholic theologian and author, the newspaper is both “structure and soul”. He believes that media is something more than an ordinary profitable enterprise and interprets journalism as a “spiritual ministry”. A prerequisite for the true ministry is the hierarchical system of values. In this context, for González de Cardedal the most important are “decisive values”, “permanent priorities”, from the positions of which one should think. He also defines two main ideals of mass communication: the development of nobility and the strengthening of freedom. In addition, Olegario González de Cardedal emphasizes such features of a journalist as the devotion to the truth, the respect for facts, the professional cognition of the order of reality, the empathy and the freedom in relation to the powerful of this world. Moreover, the essayist pays special attention to the need for a more targeted approach to the coverage of international events. Olegario González de Cardedal believes that a reader first of all looks in a newspaper not only for what helps him get closer to the people who live nearby, but also to those ones who live far away. This, in his opinion, is a necessity at a time when information is a source of orientation in the struggle for existence, especially at a time of integral challenges that make geographical distances relative. “Human life has already reached cosmic proportions, and we cannot be human without being neighbors. Even through a provincial newspaper, great events of the world must travel: its landscapes, its people, its destinies...” Recognizing the fact that all newspapers are fundamentally local, however, the thinker notes, they must all build a common consciousness, convince of the common purpose and hope.
