Abstract:
Although the function of Auto CAD is powerful, its professional pertinence is weak, and partuicularly it cannot satisfy the requirement for the efficient drawing and annotation of the common mechanical structure. The author of this paper has a discussion on the development principle and methods of a 2D General Mechanical CAD System (MACD). Faced up with all the requirements of the mechanical designing 2D drawing, and on the basis of the overall extracting the special features of the mechanical structure 2D primitives, the designing habits and the designing standards and specifications, all the function points of the system have been set up through the intersection and integration of the Auto CAD working mode and the functions of the system. A mechanical CAD system with a general drawing fucntion has been complished with a comprehensive use of the tools of the Auto CAD like function expansion, menu customization and programme development. Applied practice shows that this system has satisfied all the requirements for the mechanical desginers to make the drawings, annotations, enquiry for the standard data, the structure enquiry and quotations so that the designing efficiency has been greatly increased.

Abstract:
STIM1 (stromal interaction molecule 1) is one of the key elements that mediate store-operated Ca2+ entry via CRAC (Ca2+- release-activated Ca2+) channels in immune and non-excitable cells. Under physiological conditions, the intramolecular auto-inhibitions in STIM1 C- and STIM1 N-termini play essential roles in keeping STIM1 in an inactive state. However, the auto-inhibitory mechanism of the STIM1 C-terminus is still unclear. In the present study, we first predicted a short inhibitory domain (residues 310–317) in human STIM1 that might determine the different localizations of human STIM1 from Caenorhabditis elegans STIM1 in resting cells. Next, we confirmed the prediction and further identified an aromatic amino acid residue, Tyr316, that played a crucial role in maintaining STIM1 in a closed conformation in quiescent cells. Full-length STIM1-Y316A formed constitutive clusters near the plasma membrane and activated the CRAC channel in the resting state when co-expressed with Orai1. The introduction of a Y316A mutation caused the higher-order oligomerization of the in vitro purified STIM1 fragment containing both the auto-inhibitory domain and CAD (CRAC-activating domain). We propose that the Tyr316 residue may be involved in the auto-inhibitory mechanism of the STIM1 C-terminus in the quiescent state. This inhibition could be achieved either by interacting with the CAD using hydrogen and/or hydrophobic bonds, or by an intermolecular interaction using repulsive forces, which maintained a dimeric STIM1.

ABSTRACT: Citizen’s growing expectations and demands towards public services introduced a new orientation in the process of administrative reform and modernization. However, the concern is not about transforming public organizations into organizations similar to private ones, but more about replacing the present standard, centered strictly on following procedures, by a citizen-oriented approach. Also within the terms of the framework proposed to the implementation of the changing processes on Portuguese Public Administration, the Integrated System of Performance Assessment (SIADAP) establishes principles and guidelines that embrace, in particular, the results orientation, combining an integrated perspective of people´s evaluation and services and organisms evaluation, giving in this regard emphasis to the self-evaluation processes. In what concerns self-assessment organizational mechanisms, during the Portuguese Presidency of European Union, in 2000, in the meeting of the UE General Directors of the Public Administrations, the Common Assessment Framework (CAF) was approved and a commitment was assumed to develop efforts to disclose and promote its use in the respective countries. In this regard, the present study aims to contribute to a better understanding of the way the Common Assessment Framework can be applied and its consequences in service provision. This work develops a case study on the application of the Common Assessment Framework to the Attendance Services of a Municipality. Its insights, especially the ones related to the self-assessment process, are expected to shed some light into some critical success factors applicable to others organizational contexts. A particular attention is given to conditions and factors that can contribute to make the self- assessment process sustainable, thus strengthten the continuous improvement of a Municipality. From our empirical work, it was possible to conclude that the use of the CAF Model, although it is a complex process, can indeed provide the municipality with vital tools to unchain improving procedures. It is also possible to affirm that the effective use of the model depends essentially on the real commitment of the leadership and its ability to involve the people who work at the municipality on the self-assessment process in a way that promotes consistency of purposes, continuous improvment and change.

Milovanović, Nebojša. "A study of controlled auto ignition (CAI) combustion in internal combustion engines." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2003. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/19906.

Full text
Abstract:
Controlled Auto Ignition (CAI) combustion is a new combustion principle in internal combustion engines which has in recent years attracted increased attention. In CAI combustion, which combines features of spark ignition (SI) and compression ignition (CI) principles, air/fuel mixture is premixed, as in SI combustion and auto-ignited by piston compression as in CI combustion. Ignition is provided in multiple points, and thus the charge gives a simultaneous energy release. This results in uniform and simultaneous auto-ignition and chemical reaction throughout the whole charge without flame propagation. CAI combustion is controlled by the chemical kinetics of air/fuel mixture with no influence of turbulence. The CAI engine offers benefits in comparison to spark ignited and compression ignited engines in higher efficiency due to elimination of throttling losses at part and idle loads. There is a possibility to use high compression ratios since it is not knock limited, and in significant lower NOx emission (≈90%) and particle matter emission (≈50%), due to much lower combustion temperature and elimination of fuel rich zones. However, there are several disadvantages of the CAI engine that limits its practical application, such as high level of hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions, high peak pressures, high rates of heat release, reduced power per displacement and difficulties in starting and controlling the engine. Controlling the operation over a wide range of loads and speeds is probably the major difficulty facing CAI engines. Controlling is actually two-components as it consists of auto-ignition phasing and controlling the rates of heat release. As CAI combustion is controlled by chemical kinetics of air/fuel mixture, the auto-ignition timing and heat release rate are determined by the charge properties such as temperature, composition and pressure. Therefore, changes in engine operational parameters or in types of fuel, results in changing of the charge properties. Hence, the auto-ignition timing and the rate of heat release. The Thesis investigates a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) combustion in internal combustion engines suitable for transport applications. The CAI engine environment is simulated by using a single-zone, homogeneous reactor model with a time variable volume according to the slider-crank relationship. The model uses detailed chemical kinetics and distributed heat transfer losses according to Woschini's correlation [1]. The fundamentals of chemical kinetics, and their relationship with combustion related problems are presented. The phenomenology and principles of auto-ignition process itself and its characteristics in CAI combustion are explained. The simulation model for representing CAI engine environment is established and calibrated with respect to the experimental data. The influences of fuel composition on the auto-ignition timing and the rate of heat release in a CAI engine are investigated. The effects of engine parameters on CAI combustion in different engine concepts fuelled with various fuels are analysed. The effects of internal gas recirculation (IEGR) in controlling the auto-ignition timing and the heat release rate in a CAI engine fuelled with different fuels are investigated. The effects of variable valve timings strategy on gas exchange process in CAI engine fuelled with commercial gasoline (95RON) are analysed.

ABSTRACT: Today, Public Administration is undergoing a profound reform that aims at its modernization and adapting to the needs of a society which is in constant change. In this context an improvement in educational services rendered by schools is imperative for the increase in the standards of students’ qualifications as a way to face one of Portugal’s structural problems. Thus, the assessment and self-assessment of the schools’ performance has become more relevant in the sense that it guarantees a permanent progress of the educational system. This is only possible by means of a reflection on the implemented practice, which proposes to meet the schools’ needs and respond to the demands of today’s society. In the context of the master’s degree in Public Administration and Management, this research project aims at contributing to the issue above, through the presentation of a report on a practical application of the CAF model to an elementary school. The CAF was designed to be used by all sectors of public administration, due to its specificness, and by diverse levels of national, regional and local administration with the objective of helping European Union administrations understand and use quality management techniques, in such a way that they will improve their respective performance. In this sense, resorting to case study methodology, we propose to apply the CAF tool to a Portuguese Continental public school based on the methodology used in the QUALIS project, applied to the public schools of the Azores. Despite some limitations linked to the conditions of the elaboration of this work, it was possible to conclude that the application of the CAF model provides a set of very useful tools for the development of procedures that will improve the quality of educational services, rendered by the school in the case study. It is also important to refer that the benefits that were afforded to their direct collaborators and to all their stakeholders. However we must highlight, for obvious reasons, the students, who are the main reason of the existence of schools. So that the model can be applied with success the school administrative board and the majority of the staff must be fully convinced that the regular usages of self-assessment processes are indispensable to the introduction of changes which will lead to the improvement in quality.

Abstract:
The Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine is a promising engine concept that emits low concentrations of NOx and particulates and still has a high efficiency. Since the charge is auto-ignited, the auto-ignition quality of the fuel is of major importance. It has been shown in several studies that neither of the classical measures of auto-ignition quality of gasoline-like fuels, RON and MON, can alone describe this in all conditions in HCCI combustion. However, even in such cases it is possible to combine RON and MON into an octane index, OI, that describes the auto-ignition quality well in most conditions. The octane numbers are combined into the OI with the variable K according to the following equation: OI = (1-K)RON + K MON = RON – K S The OI of a sensitive fuel is the equivalent of the octane number of a primary reference fuel with the same resistance to auto-ignition in the tested condition. The K-value is dependent on the temperature and pressure history. A generic parameter Tcomp15, the temperature at 15 bar during the compression, was introduced to describe the temperature and pressure history. It was found that the K-value increases with increasing Tcomp15 and two linear equations have been suggested to describe this relationship. At high or low Tcomp15 it has been found that the sensitivity of the fuel octane quality on combustion phasing is small and the auto-ignition quality defined by the OI scale does no longer play a big role. NO affects the combustion phasing of gasoline-like fuels. This effect is most significant at low concentration where it advances the combustion phasing considerably. At higher conditions its influence is different for different fuels. A sensitive fuel is considered a good HCCI fuel since its OI changes in the same direction as the octane requirement of the engine, which would make the engine management easier. It is also likely that a sensitive fuel will enable a wider operating range. The auto-ignition quality of diesel-like fuels was studied in tests with three different strategies of mixture formation. In these tests it was found that the ignition delay increased with lower cetane number and that the cetane number described the auto-ignition quality well, even for fuels of significantly different physical properties. The experiments were, however, made at a limited range of operating conditions and low load. A good diesel-like HCCI fuel should be easy to vaporize to facilitate homogeneity. It should have a high resistance to auto-ignition, not necessarily the highest, one that allows both high and low loads at a given compression ratio. Finally, it should also function well with the injection system without a significant decrease in injection system life length.

Abstract:
Abstract The use of time resolved photon emission (TRPE) to compare internal measurements with simulations can dramatically reduce the time required for IC analysis. During debug, this technique makes it possible to probe only transistors of interest. Two limitations must be overcome: precise location of transistor photon emission areas and distinction between photons emitted by closely spaced transistors. Otherwise results may be seriously biased. Introducing CAD auto-channeling for TRPE makes it possible to generate virtual layers where emissions are expected. As a result, transistor TRPE areas can be automatically located and emission from nearby transistors is taken into account, thus significantly reducing the duration of IC analysis.

Abstract:
This paper will discuss the structure, features and capabilities of the Union Gas Ltd. Station Engineering Electrical/Controls Construction Database. The central feature of the application is the R:BASE database. In general, the database contains information which pertains to a transmission, measurement, regulating and/or compressor station. From the menu-driven custom application software used with R:BASE, the user can perform mass data manipulation to maintain the database, as well as create reports such as the equipment catalogue report. Finally, data can be extracted from the database to auto-generate junction box termination schedules as well as auto-generate, through a CAD software package, instrumentation loop drawings. These have the ability to show information such as panel and I/O module terminations, junction/termination box schedules, cable and conduit schedules, and device information such as alarm, shutdown and control setpoints.

Abstract:
As an emerging field, Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) aims to reduce or eliminate manual operations that require expertise in machine learning. In this paper, a graph-based architecture is employed to represent flexible combinations of ML models, which provides a large searching space compared to tree-based and stacking-based architectures. Based on this, an evolutionary algorithm is proposed to search for the best architecture, where the mutation and heredity operators are the key for architecture evolution. With Bayesian hyper-parameter optimization, the proposed approach can automate the workflow of machine learning. On the PMLB dataset, the proposed approach shows the state-of-the-art performance compared with TPOT, Autostacker, and auto-sklearn. Some of the optimized models are with complex structures which are difficult to obtain in manual design.

Lewis, Sherman, Emilio Grande, and Ralph Robinson. The Mismeasurement of Mobility for Walkable Neighborhoods. Mineta Transportation Institute, November 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2020.2060.

Full text
Abstract:
The major US household travel surveys do not ask the right questions to understand mobility in Walkable Neighborhoods. Yet few subjects can be more important for sustainability and real economic growth based on all things of value, including sustainability, affordability, and quality of life. Walkable Neighborhoods are a system of land use, transportation, and transportation pricing. They are areas with attractive walking distances of residential and local business land uses of sufficient density to support enough business and transit, with mobility comparable to suburbia and without owning an auto. Mobility is defined as the travel time typically spent to reach destinations outside the home, not trips among other destinations that are not related to the home base. A home round trip returns home the same day, a way of defining routine trips based on the home location. Trip times and purposes, taken together, constitute travel time budgets and add up to total travel time in the course of a day. Furthermore, for Walkable Neighborhoods, the analysis focuses on the trips most important for daily mobility. Mismeasurement consists of including trips that are not real trips to destinations outside the home, totaling 48 percent of trips. It includes purposes that are not short trips functional for walk times and mixing of different trips into single purposes, resulting in even less useful data. The surveys do not separate home round trips from other major trip types such as work round trips and overnight trips. The major household surveys collect vast amounts of information without insight into the data needed for neighborhood sustainability. The methodology of statistics gets in the way of using statistics for the deeper insights we need. Household travel surveys need to be reframed to provide the information needed to understand and improve Walkable Neighborhoods. This research makes progress on the issue, but mismeasurement prevents a better understanding of the issue.

Download (2417Kb) | Vorschau Abstract Biofilm-like properties can form on sea surfaces, but an understanding of the underlying processes leading to the development of these biofilms is not available. We used approaches to study the development of biofilm-like properties at the sea surface, i.e. the number, abundance and diversity of bacterial communities and phytoplankton, the accumulation of gel-like particles and dissolved tracers. During the expedition POS537 we used newly developed and free drifting mesocosms and performed incubation experiments. With these approaches we aim to investigate the role of light and UV radiation as well as the microbes themselves, which lead to the formation of biofilms. With unique microbial interactions and photochemical reactions, sea surface biofilms could be biochemical reactors with significant implications for ocean and climate research, e.g. with respect to the marine carbon cycle, diversity of organisms and oceanatmosphere interactions.
