Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the study of technology upgrading in late industrialising countries. This research aims to understand the process of technology upgrading of SMEs in the automotive industry by looking at the internal and external sources of technology for these firms. To do so, the main bodies of literature of this research are i) technological capabilities and absorptive capacity, ii) global value chains, and iii) NLSs. Technology upgrading has not been a well-developed notion in the literature. The literature has focused on technical change in industrialised economies and it has omitted the process of incremental changes and the shortcomings existing in the system of innovation for late industrialising countries. To observe technology upgrading in developing countries, I look at the transfer of technology from up-to-date firms (assemblers) to the less knowledgeable firms (SMEs) and the assimilation of this technology by the latter. To look at other sources of technology, I observed the country' context and the role of other actors in the industry. In this regard, National Learning Systems (NLSs) permit to understand and explain the differences of the process of technical change in late industrialising countries where they learnt through the diffusion of technology created somewhere else rather than the creation of it within the system. In this research, I offer new findings for the literature which has paid little attention to the process of technology upgrading and SMEs. I also confirm that the use of NLSs instead of NIS is more accurate for late industrialising countries and I offer new paths for future research in these issues.

Abstract:
This thesis studies the determinants and outcomes of the skill systems in Mexico and Turkey, two crucial cases of middle-income countries (MICs). Despite the similarities in their previous institutional environments and links to the global economy, Turkey has experienced higher economic growth and better social development compared to Mexico. This PhD project focuses on the Mexican and Turkish skill systems, which have been significant institutions that affect the (different) economic and social characteristics of advanced industrialised countries in the literature on comparative capitalisms (CCs). This study builds its theoretical approach on the arguments of CCs literature and the claims of globalisation, where it draws from the studies on global value chains (GVCs). It scrutinises the patterns of convergence due to globalisation and ongoing divergence because of the variation of institutional structures. It examines the complementarities and outcomes of the skill systems, which will then help to understand the divergence of development experiences between Mexico and Turkey. This PhD project carries out a multi-level research and focuses the empirical study on auto parts-automotive value chains (AACs), which is an important industry for many MICs including Mexico and Turkey. The multi-level research first includes a macro-level study of local institutions in Mexico and Turkey, as well as the convergence patterns through the AACs. This is complemented with a micro-level analysis of firms' strategies to find workers with technical skills in production functions. The findings show that while there is some convergence in the Mexican and Turkish auto parts producers' skill needs, firms from these two countries adopt different strategies to address their needs. The distinctive national institutions in Mexico and Turkey, which are shaped by the differences in the state's involvement, are the main reasons for this divergence. The differences between the Mexican and Turkish skill systems have created different outcomes for both the firms and workers in these countries, and hence are expected to have contributed to their diverging development paths.

Abstract: The global competition is increasingly fierce among companies and the search for differentials passes directly to customers the costs of their products. Countries with high technology production and also have high costs of domestic production are opting for more sources of supply in regions where production costs are low and, consequently, greatly reducing the cost of the final product is thus able to increase their attractiveness to products. Due to the constant search for cost reduction of final products, in particular, the systems are operating companies in order to develop new sources of supply in the Asian region offering highly competitive prices. The study shows the relationships and impacts generated by the process of Global Sourcing, the uncertainties of this process in the supply chain and its possible impacts on customers' manufacturing these components. Now the companies and their managers do not have all the resources and knowledge needed to evaluate and correct decision making considering the advantages and disadvantages of keeping up with the current source and a new, native to Asia. Faced with this problem, this paper will work with managers to gain insight into what are some of the main variables in this process. Since there is a general rule, the big problem for managers is to choose the right strategy, and quantify and qualify its benefits can be of great help. The result of this work is a decision matrix that considers the three pillars usually considered in choosing a source with respect to the supply chain: purchasing, logistics and quality. The objective of this work is to define a method for combining the three pillars usually considered when choosing a supply source for auto parts industry, they are, purchasing, logistics and quality with the AHP method (Analytic Hierarchy Process) to assist managers in this process of decision making

The present dissertation has the goal to verify the reasons which Metal Leve relinquished share-holder majority to an international competitor and to compare the existent situation in the time of denationalization and the situation in the new controlling company Mahle Metal Leve S.A. in production form and administration, after the reorganization of the productive restructuring. That process of productive internationalization r4sult in modification in the company restructuring of the production and of the administration and occasion a new virtous circle and represent the bases of a new economical growth, with a strategic project of long term, associated to his economical power, managerial capacity and his tradition. The study is based in a group of information about the two moments, focusing the financial results, managerial aspects, leadership, competitive capacity and the evolution to the long of those of the two compared moments. Concluding that not just the phenomenon of the globalization of the international economy turned inevitable the cession of the shareholders capital. But, it also lacked strategic vision to perceive the changes that unavoidably happened his turn. The new controlling Mahler Metal Leve brought a new managerial competence that resulted in increased of productivity and it improved his competitiveness.

Abstract: The thesis investigates whether the growing and strengthening of Research and Development (R&D) activities performed by Brazilian subsidiaries of multinational companies in the automotive industry has led their suppliers located in Brazil to engage in technological activities, thus resulting in the upgrading in their technological capabilities. The thesis departs from the conceptual framework developed by Lall (1992) and by Bell and Pavitt (1995) respective to the acquisition of innovation capabilities of industrial firms in developing countries. It also makes use of their taxonomy to classify types and levels of such capabilities. The investigation has also focused how the relation between suppliers and customers contributes for the acquisition of innovation capabilities by suppliers. In this connection, it is based on concepts of types of learning links between companies, developed by Ariffin and Bell (1999). The work analyzes the results of the empirical study of the trajectories carried out by autopart companies in Brazil, which have been arranged in five groups, according to their accumulation of technological capabilities. The thesis seeks to identify the types of learning links that customer, subsidiary companies (assemblers and system suppliers) establish with their suppliers (national firms or multinational subsidiaries), and also their contribution to the development of the innovative capabilities of these suppliers. The thesis also seeks to understand whether and how the learning links with institutions - such as universities and research institutes - have contributed to the acquisition of innovation competencies by autopart suppliers. The research methodology was primarily based on case studies, which focused the detailed development of the most significant innovation events in each firm - specific technological innovations which impacted the companies in a larger scale - which have been leaded by Brazilian subsidiaries of local assemblers or of local autopart suppliers. For each innovation event, there was an attempt to identify the involvement of the several actors in the innovation chain, as well as an attempt to identify the quality and the intensity of this involvement and its impact on learning. Thus, the focus on innovation events allowed the identification of the level of technological capability reached by the companies studied. The sample comprised 6 subsidiaries of systems and autopart multinationals and 8 national autopart suppliers. The main findings suggest that improving and intensifying the R&D activities of automotive multinationals in Brazil generates demand for technological activities among local suppliers, besides contributing for their progress in terms of the acquisition of technological capability. The development of innovation capabilities by suppliers is basically related to their involvement in product co-design. Only in the cases in which the subsidiaries are actually engaged in activities of technological research, this leads to Brazilian partners being involved in the creation of new technologies. On the other hand, another finding was that improving the technological capabilities of local suppliers plays an important role in the decisions about R&D investments in Brazilian Subsidiaries of multinational companies.

In the 1950s, Japanese companies in the automotive sector, in particular the Toyota Motor Company, began to develop different methods to manufacture vehicles in relation to those used by U.S. industry, known at the time as a system of mass production (OHNO 1997; WOMACK et al. 1992; CUSUMANO, 1989). Breaking this paradigm resulted in a new production model, known as the Toyota Production System (TPS) and popularized in the west by the name of lean manufacturing (LM) or lean production (LP). With the implementation of new production systems, it is generally verified that changes occur in production strategies (PSs), in coordinating the flow of materials and information and also the relationships between customers and suppliers, and these can have major impacts on the ways organizational implemented. Given this context, the main objective of this work is to identify and analyze the relationships between production strategies and lean manufacturing approach in three companies of the auto parts industry that have adopted lean manufacturing as a system for production management, trying to verify the role that STP has in the PSs of each company. We opted for a qualitative approach and the research strategy used was the case study. The results of the study indicate that production strategies and lean production are effectively aligned in the cases studied, showing that LP acts supporting the PS of the companies.

ABSTRACT Remanufacturing is an important source of sustainable development. Remanufactured products provide quality standards of new products with low cost. In addition, remanufacturing companies represent a potential growth in employment, as are intensive in manpower due to the operations of disassembly, reconditioning and reassembly. Due to the unique characteristics of the remanufacturing process, it clearly has many differences compared to conventional manufacturing. These characteristics, which makes it a complex activity, requiring a good performance of the activities of the Production Planning and Control (PPC). In this research we intend to cope with PPC, specifically for the automotive parts remanufacturing, one of the most representative of the category in Brazil. The research objectives are to identify the main characteristics and challenges of remanufacturing auto parts, with respect to PPC, identifying the main features, management tools and challenges of remanufacturing in the literature with regard to PPC, and propose a model / method to fill the identified gaps about the difficulties in practice and literature on PPC in remanufacturing. The proposed method, to fill one of the gaps identified, is to perform the disassembly master production scheduling considering stochastic routings. Thus, the results of this study contribute effectively to the development of theory and practical application with respect to PPC in remanufacturing.

The history of the automobile in Brazil began around 1890, when the first vehicle imported from Europe, landed on home soil. From then on, the car that from the beginning has a relationship of love and hate with the population, is gaining space and the auto industry growing in importance for the industrial development of this country. Since the 1950s, when the government begins the process of developing a genuinely Brazilian automobile industry, several adjustments had to be made for this to happen. In parallel to the development of the automotive industry, developed to the auto parts industry. In the beginning, all the pieces were imported from Europe and the US, to the time when a national auto parts industry develops. The national automotive industry consists of original and independent auto parts suppliers. The first supply the car manufacturers and the last the aftermarket. The investigation begins in automotive History it is developed by aftermarket features and the relationship of suppliers to automakers ends with a multiple case study, that investigates 4 original and independent parts manufacturers. The research method used in this study is the study of multiple case study. The main contribution of the study was to add the independent auto parts supplier in the supply chain structures of the automotive industry presented by Bede (1996) and Scavarda and Hamacher (2011).

Abstract:
The enactment of the North America Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was intended to reduce tariffs on most goods by 2008 among Canada, the United States, and Mexico, and to create the largest regional market outside the European Union. Early research conducted to investigate the relationships between tariffs elimination and trade volume focused mainly on macrolevel effects with mixed results, without acknowledging the possible influence from exchange rate fluctuations. After 20 years, NAFTA has provided the opportunity to observe a significant reduction in tariffs between 1994 and 2013. Skepticism regarding the relationship between trade liberalization and the regional economy, and the controversy still surrounding NAFTA, suggests that other factors might influence trade, making the current study relevant. The purpose of this study was to investigate possible relationships between exchange rate fluctuations and trade volume during a period when tariffs were eliminated. This study focused on 2 basic theories of preferential trade and the exchange rate, and data were collected on imports-exports between Mexico and the United States. Regression analyses showed a relationship between exchange rate fluctuation and trade volume when tariffs are eliminated. The findings may help exporters and unions understand the implications of other factors affecting trade. The findings may also help union leaders understand how other economic factors may have implication on global economy rather than focusing solely on trade agreements, and to better strategize in addressing social issues of concern related to globalization.

With the crisis that has been going the automotive industry last year, it is necessary that companies in the auto parts sector go forward several changes to remain competitive. In this context, organizational innovation, which has the organizational culture as one of its main determinants, it is a key pillar of support competitiveness. Thus, this work is a multicases study in five large suppliers companies of auto parts of the metropolitan area of Sorocaba, aimed to analyze the practices of organizational innovation, and identify the factors related to the organizational culture of these companies are the key to the organizational innovation. As result, it was found that the adoption of organizational innovation practices is due to isomorphism in the automotive industries, but the organizational culture focused on innovation is essential for the occurrence of organizational innovation, and features such as financial (reward system, financial resources), organizational architecture (market orientation, mission, value and leadership), management tools (support innovation, teamwork, acceptance of risk and error tolerance, creativity, communication and management systems) are fundamentals. As factors that hinder organizational innovation were basically found problems related to people as: outgoing employees, lack of discipline, motivation, overwork, predesigned concepts, difficult to accept changes and unhappiness. The centralization of power, lack of autonomy and authoritarian leadership were also mentioned as inhibitors to the occurrence of organizational innovation.

Abstract:
In today’s Chinese automotive industry, the traditional self-management logistics mode cannot fulfill higher requirement of logistics performance, more and more automotive manufacturers seek to outsource their logistics activities to third-party logistics service providers to optimize supply chain management. Milk run system is a typical example of 3PL mode in automotive industry, which can help firms minimize costs and improve logistics function simultaneously. Given the increasing importance of 3PL, many literatures are concerned about the usage of 3PL; however, few of them discussed 3PL form the perspective of China. Besides, in terms of Milk run system, seldom articles focus on this innovative logistics mode, especially in Chinese automotive industry. Therefore, in this thesis work, authors discuss 3PL from the perspective of Chinese automotive industry, especially focus on the typical 3PL mode—Milk run system, set SGM as case company, aiming at find out the factors that facilitate Chinese automotive manufacturers convert self-management mode to 3PL mode, and then discuss the benefits of professional 3PL services; in addition, authors emphasize on Milk run system and its unique benefits.  The research objectives are solved by combining literature review and empirical findings. Relevant literatures are downloaded from Internet and Library’s database. Empirical findings are gathered by interviews and questionnaires.  Through comparing literature review with findings, both external and internal factors that facilitate automotive manufacturers change logistics mode are summarized. Taiwan's auto parts industry has faced various challenges and competition either from Southeast Asian countries with low cost productivity, or severe requests for more strict quality from customers, fast and efficient delivery, cost down and even pursuing best profit for the company, etc. Lean production to be studied here is an improvement action to cost down and eliminate waste in manufacturing productions, in which the auto parts industry has seeking for applications in their production reform and to break through the current facing difficulties. It is also a requested from the upstream, center company that all downstream anto-parts factories should keep up with their competitiveness by adopting and practicing the lean production methodology so as to improve their productivity in fulfilling the required quality and schedule, not to mention to cost down but still maintain the company profits. The preliminary result seems to be insignificant with little improvement. Therefore, this thesis is intended to analyze the content and spirit of the lean production to be effectively implemented in Taiwan’s auto parts industries in resolving some barriers in application of this new concept. Through careful investigations of the three factories that have been carrying out the lean production and interviewing four factories as the case study, the following two items are concluded to indicate the important factors in applying the lean production as: (1)The key factors of success for practicing lean production. (2) A model of procedures for success in practicing lean production. It is noted as well that the present study can also be applied to the relevant industries when practicing the lean production, but the key factors or procedures for success could be different due to different productions in nature.

While being one of the biggest economic sectors for decades and yet increasing market size, the automobile industry has started to experience major changes, mostly coming from the technology side more than ever such as electric and self-driving vehicles. While the technologies are not mature yet, many analysts and industry reports considered these trends to be disruptive and inevitable. Thus, they will have strong impacts on existing industry players in the near future which have not changed for more than a century since the beginning of the industry. Therefore, this study aims at investigating macroeconomic and environmental factors to forecast their possible impacts, particularly on the auto spare parts manufacturing industry in Taiwan, one of the major exporting sectors. For the purpose, this study employs two analyses, ESTEMPLE for the macroeconomic environments and then Porter’s Five Force analysis of industry structure. The analyses reveal the threat of reducing demand for auto spare parts from the development of self-driving cars, while the demand for auto accessories appears to grow steadily. Nevertheless, it can be important for Taiwanese auto spare parts manufacturers to monitor those technologies closely while looking for opportunities to enter new market to stay competitive.

In the middle of 1980s, Cooper and Kaplan had researched many cases and then developed “Activity-Based costing (ABC)”system to improve traditional financial costing system. In this system, they ,cost analysts, analyze business process to find out cost factors. According these factors to distribute resources, then each product cost is able to be computed accurately. If enterprises need detail data records and accurately distribute their resources, they have to employ an enterprise resource planning system. Most ERP system adopted by small and medium business in Taiwan are based on transaction processing, not on cost. Thus, Taiwan’s famous ERP system could not provide sufficient in data for Activity-Based costing system. This study tries to simplify the ABC system to suggest a method of prototyping model system that is expected to be a reference for helping the small and medium enterprises in Taiwan to build ABC system.

As the automobile industry boom back to warm and consumers were increasingly concerned about their cars. Taiwan's auto repair market size is up to 70 billion and attracts many companies continue to invest in the auto parts industry. In the highly competitive industrial environment, the companies should think about how to provide consumers with more diverse product selection, better service quality, and even building a more competitive business model. This study tooks three auto parts companies as the object and employed the depth interview with several managers based on the Business Model Canvas (Osterwalder and Pigneur, 2010) for data collection. The purpose of this study is to understand the current status of auto parts store’s business model and explore the differences, then propose some suggestions of business model for the future development. The results show that the value proposition of auto parts companies is offering car after - sales service like car maintenance or car boutique for those car owners. For internal operation of business model, auto parts companies value the relationship with the vendors. Price promotion is the most common strategy. Capital and technology are the two most important resources. For external market of business model, the physical stores are the main service channel but the virtual online sales path is the trend in future. Customer relationship is maintained by membership system. In the revenue section, car maintenance and car boutique are about half of each. Though the cost structures are slightly different among three companies, mainly composed of expand business locations, inventory costs and the cost of water and electricity.

Most of automotive parts manufactures in Taiwan not only belong to small &; medium-scale enterprises but also aim at the aftermarket, particularly. With a view to involving into the supply chain of the internationalized as well as sizable-scaled OEM in this industry, more and more auto components producers have obtained the merchandise benefits by means of a variety of marketing networks and strongholds, distribution warehouse, supply line at local subsidiary factory, technical cooperation, joint venture, etc. No matter the aftermarket or OEM, the accessory makers have been possessed of outstanding performance and market occupation by investing in the global market for several years. Taiwan’s manufacturers are qualified with the advantage in creating flexibly and providing diversely. Furthermore, they have been capable of the worldwide competitiveness through keeping inputting R&;D and enhancing produce technology. Nevertheless, lowering tariffs on imported automobiles and spare components, cancellation in the ratio for self-manufactured content and other elements caused the competition is getting obviously between the imported and national market. Therefore, whether the internal manufacturers will suffer from the decline in homemade market as the result of “Open Door policy, the critical factors will depend on the attitude of auto parts manufacturers. Moreover, the influence is connected with the living environment of the automobile spare parts industry. The purpose of this research investigates how to master the key success factors and what kind of management strategy should be selected and adopted by the member of the automotive parts business with a view toward keeping the position of the competitive advantage under the acute dog-eat-dog circumstance. Auto Parts Manufacturing Industry has the characteristics of technology-intensive and high specialized division. To maintain basic competitive ability, Auto firm needs well-designed operation procedure and precise cost control. Through the total operating performance analysis, we can tell the gap of various efficiencies between rivals and itself, to learn the core ability of the benchmark, find out internal weakness and potential improving space. Finally, to get better situation in the competitive market. This paper adapts multi-dimension efficiency evaluation method, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), to calculate each Auto firm’s Technical Efficiency (TE), Pure Technical Efficiency (PTE), Scale Efficiency (SE), and Slack. Using this information,we can suggest private firms how to improve and downsize reasonably. Fartherly, this paper uses step-by-step regression model to investigate key subjective input variables which greatly affect one to become the benchmark firm. This paper uses the data of 36 auto parts manufacturers in Taiwan 2003, adapts Capital, Staff Numbers of R&D department, Staff Numbers of Non R&D department as the input variable, Operating Revenue as output variable, to run the DEA process. The research results revealed that most Auto firms’performance is inefficient and has huge space to improve. The key subjective input variable which greatly affect one to become the benchmark firm are supply-chain management and customer-service related variable.

The economic growth drive the increasing number of automobile sales amount in emerging countries, which contribute to the worldwide automobile market is reached 53.2% in 2011; and of which, China and India are the main automobile sales areas; especially in the 2012, Chinese automobile parts market reached approximately 1.5 trillion CNY, that contribute to the annual growth rate of 43%, and this automobile parts sales market is expected to a explosive growth in the coming three to five years. Therefore, in this study we start by the automobile sales market in emerging countries, and following to come out the suggestions to the automotive aftermarket parts and components of Taiwan suppliers: Take the advantages of the rising in emerging markets, cut into the market via AM to OES market, and though the strategic alliances with these growth of markets to reach the regional economies of scale. In which, the Czech Republic is the most promising automotive aftermarket, and China is right behind it. The new power automobiles become the trend in the future due to the sustainable transportation, we suggest to the automobile part suppliers to figure out the strategies to develop the parts and components for the coming all-electrical car era, before it turn into the mass production stage. The comfort and the safety during driving is more important to car users, increasing demeans to electric devices in this application. This gives the chance to let current electric industrial step into the auto industrial: the electric industrial has the R&;D capability, and the auto industrial has the sales channels. Per the market changes in the emerging countries, the power changes of automobile, the automobile electrical component applications, and the concomitant cost structure change, the upon three suggestions gave via this study, to make Taiwan auto-part suppliers continue developing in the international market.

Motor industry is a synthesized industry combined with high technology and high added values, is considered one of most important industries in all developed countries. Due to its critical role in industrial development of a country, motor industry is also called ‘locomotive industry’ and is bolstered by auto-parts. Along with the saturation of domestic car-sale market and the development of Mass Rapid Transportation (MRT) system in metropolis, the growth of domestic demand of auto-parts is greatly affected. In addition, the lower of tariff rate and the cancellation of self-manufacture rate after Taiwan joined to the World Trade Organization (WTO) have also affected the import of auto-parts that its amount is expected to be greatly increased, which would be a threat to the survival of domestic auto-parts manufacturers. This paper adapts Data Envelope Analysis (DEA) and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) to evaluate the operational efficiencies and productivity variations of 50 auto-parts manufacturers in Taiwan, according to the data from1999 to 2001. The results of this research aim to provide collaborative companies with an understanding of the effects of resource application and to guide them to allocate resources rationally. In terms of variable establishment, we set up four outputs (i.e., total assets, number of employees, cost of materials, and expenditure of energy) and one input (i.e., net revenue) as analytical indicators. The research results revealed that there is no significant evidence that high total assets companies had a better operational efficiency. In addition, results obtained from the MPI demonstrate that the depression in global productivity of collaborative companies is resulted from the depression of efficiency itself.

Due to the trend of globalization, Auto-parts industry in Taiwan is facing the challenge of market liberalized and global car companies’ tactical regroup that cause the structural readjustment. In order to maintain market competitive capacity, Auto-parts companies in Taiwan head into internationalization gradually and set up overseas subsidiaries in different investing types, creating so-called multi-national enterprises. The overseas subsidiaries will not only present their different tactical missions they should undertake that are different from their headquarter’s during expanding market share, but also play different roles in monolithic value chain. Under internationalized operation, how to keep track of transcendental international knowledge-management tactics and generate innovative motivity continuously will be a great challenge to reputed traditional industry- Auto-parts in the future. Through questionnaire-inquire method, this research reports explore the connection of the knowledge management and the ability of organization innovation in Auto-parts industry. Adding the view of internationalized tactics to search the above influence of otherness in order to find out the most optimum international knowledge-management operation mode. After this research is studied and verified, the main points of it as follows: 1. The analysis of otherness: This research points out that the level of internationalization to the Auto-parts firms does not cause any notable difference in knowledge management and organization innovation. 2. Influential analysis: In the part of affection of knowledge management to organization innovation, this research notes that other variable of knowledge management to management innovation and technology innovation exists positive connection aside from knowledge management tactics. The “learning culture” is the most forecasting factor to management innovation and technology innovation. Besides, both “knowledge-supporting information system” and “knowledge-transfer advancement” get marked forecasting to the management innovation of Auto-parts industry. “Multinational-integration-knowledge innovation” has notable forecasting to technology management. Only value-chain-activity causes influence in variable to the part of knowledge management and organization innovation in internationalized tactics. The research to Auto-parts industry remarks that learning culture, knowledge-supporting information system, knowledge-transfer advancement and multinational-integration-knowledge innovation enable knowledge management to create positive affection in organization innovation. Thus, as my suggestion, enterprises have to get the effort in cultivating learning culture, establishing knowledge-supporting information system, advancing knowledge transfer and using the method of integration to create knowledge.

SUMMARY Thanks to its rapid expansion in recent years, the China market has enjoyed a stable rate of economic growth and consequently an ever-increasing influence worldwide. Since Taiwan cannot afford to be absent from the highly potential China market. Findings from this present study indicate that the Taiwan-China trade agreement may not show benefits anytime soon. In the long term, nevertheless, the strong potential of China’s market for whole cars will lead to expanding demand for after-sales services. Keywords: Auto parts, Regional trade agreements INTRODUCTION Amid recent trends toward globalization and decentralization, countries around the world are eager to sign regional trade pacts. Over the past few years, many developed yet economically strapped countries scrambled to seek trade agreement talks with the reformed and “opened-up” emerging economies. A lot of multinational companies are relocating manufacturing facilities to emerging economies (e.g., China, India and Brazil), eyeing their impressive growth potential. As rising raw-material prices push up production cost lately, a lot of companies move production lines with low-level technology to emerging economies, hence the latter’s increased per capita income. That in turn sent the emerging economies expanding, with people’s consumption and domestic demand bolstered at the same time. By Michael Porter's Five Forces Model and diamond Model, analysis of the case studies five listing companies competitive advantage. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thanks to its rapid expansion in recent years, the China market has enjoyed a stable rate of economic growth and consequently an ever-increasing influence worldwide. Since Taiwan cannot afford to be absent from the highly potential China market, the authorities have launched an all-out effort to negotiate with China, on an ongoing basis, for multi-phase and mutual-beneficial trade agreements. It is worth noting that the China market is at the early stage of strong growth, with its infrastructure leaving much to be desired. That explains the considerable annual growth of China’s auto market compared to the limited expansion of its Taiwanese counterpart, which is troubled by a relatively small domestic market. By Michael Porter's five forces analysis model, indicating the company's SWOT. Analyze the operating results through financial data of the case studies five listing companies. The companies are mainly derived from the threat of competitors. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Findings from this present study indicate that the Taiwan-China trade agreement may not show benefits anytime soon. In the long term, nevertheless, the strong potential of China’s market for whole cars will lead to expanding demand for after-sales services. The operating results of Taiwan-based auto part makers in China, therefore, are affected by their investment strategies. In other words, Taiwanese auto-parts firms are advised to invest in China either through joint ventures with local companies or through strategic alliances with international giants, so they may maintain the existing customer base while tapping into the local supply chain. What the Taiwanese authorities are supposed to do, therefore, is ensure that the cross-strait trade goes without hindrance. Therefore, manufacturers are required to take more than a way to reduce costs and efforts to obtain the relevant production certification. Not only improve product quality, but also expand the company's product line. The companies should actively explore new markets and new applications. Through understanding of the company's strengths and weaknesses, to further strengthen its own advantages. Even the company can gradually towards automation of production. CONCLUSION Only case studies five listing companies seems inadequate in short period.Relevant data obtains by Taiwan stock exchange. It can’t fully reflect the actual picture of the industry, and there are many Agreements on the signing of the ECFA with mainland supporting measures are not complete. The company also pay attention to that the application of new products. It is very important how to enhance the competitiveness of the company itself. Furthermore, we need to strengthen cooperation with foreign manufacturers. The company must Increase the chances to break into their supply chain. The company enhance the company's R & D capabilities and proactively offer new products to customers. The companies actively increase the proportion of the after market and effort to obtain the relevant production certification. The companies must improve product quality and expand the company's product line.Effective to develop the industry in the development of the China. The companies should actively explore new markets and new applications.

Automotive industry is taken by Malaysia as national strategic industry and Malaysia is the only nation in Southeast Asia having its own passenger car brands as well as holding technical autonomy in car manufacture process from design, research and development to mass production. However, compared to car assembly activities in Malaysia, auto parts manufacturing sector draws scarce attention in the past studies despite the fact that auto parts firms play a gradually important role and burdens responsibilities in value-added activities of car manufacturing. Hence, through in-depth interview, field observation and secondary data collection, this study mainly focuses on the case of auto parts industry in Malaysia, and discusses the certain factors and mechanisms as well as the roles of the state that influencing the development and technological learning process of auto parts firms. Furthermore, this study also points out the significances of auto parts industry development in Malaysia, as well as the interactions and influences played among the state and multinational firms in firms’ technological catching-up process. For policy application, this study takes Malaysia experience as an example on what learning strategies latecomer firms could implement on process of building their technological capabilities, as well as the role the state could act in order to serve as a reference for developing countries with interests in initiating pioneer industry. In other words, how the state can make use of the institutional mechanisms not only to attract but regulate multinational firms to embed in host country simultaneously, thus enabling firms from developing countries to obtain positive gains from investments and cooperation with multinational enterprises, as well as reaching the goal of technology transfer.

Abstract According to the statistical information of I.M.F. in 1997, it shows that logistics costs play a significant character in countries’ economics. In general, if a country inputs less resource in logistics activities than others’, it means that it has the better efficiency of logistics. Basically, logistics costs is one of important subject in operation costs, as the logistics costs is about 5-35% of sales revenues in an industry. In view of the development of Supply Chain Integration, Logistics management becomes the core management of an industry. To confront with the diversified, uncertain and trenchantly competitive markets, an industry has to execute the logistics management efficiently for improving the customers’ services. Dated August 5th, 2004 , Ministry of Economic Affairs passes the proposal- “ The strategy for the development of auto parts industry “, proposed by Industrial development Bureau, and expects it can assistant auto parts industry rise its’ capability of competition--from AM services transferred to OEM pool for Global Auto Industry. Based on global Marketing, the logistics and customer services will be forwarded to more complex, so effective logistics management will be helpful in long-term development in Taiwan auto parts industry. This research adopts AHP to find the order of critical factors for logistics management in Taiwan auto parts. And in order of critical factors for logistics management is 「Internal Integration」, 「Technology and Planning」 ,「Material/Service Supplier Integration」,「Relationship Integration」,「Customer Integration」and 「Measurement Integration」. In total 25 factors, 80% of them are distributed over 「Internal Integration」, 「Technology and Planning」and「Material/Service Supplier Integration」, which strongly match with the 80/20 principle , and it indicates that to execute and control exactly these three critical factors will rise the efficiency of the logistics management in Taiwan auto parts industry. The auto-engineering and auto-branded two-time Taiwanese vehicle industry upgrade the transformation of the auto parts industry, and its management, manufacturing and production are also changing. The second generation successors of enterprises face family management, organizational change, conflicts between two generations of business ideas, breakthroughs in market dilemmas, and even transformation and innovation. Taking the company to another peak will test the wisdom and ability of the second generation successor. This study takes Taiwan auto parts as an example to conduct research on the transformational leadership of corporate successors. The main respondents, a total of five, are the first generation of operators and successors. The research method uses an in-depth interview method. The study found that: 1. The influence of the second generation successor’s transformational leadership on the enterprise lies in the characteristics of the second generation successor presented in the process of succession and inheritance. As a successor, even if it is a family business, you still need to have the desire to succeed, and the necessary conditions for a proactive leader. Especially for the professional skills of the company’s own business projects need to be mastered, employees will be willing to work hard for their lives; 2. The second generation successor's transformational leadership faces market dilemma. It must jump away from the existing framework and move toward organizational systemization. Systematic organization, the second generation successor’s transformational leadership faces market challenges and can have new thinking and application. The new management model fosters professional core competencies; 3. The second generation successor’s transformational leadership faces leadership transformation and innovation. As a second-generation successor, we must be able to coordinate complex organizational systems while taking primary responsibility for processes, structure, talent, and behavior. These factors determine the organization’s ability to find innovative opportunities and integrate elements into services to create leadership transformation and innovation. With the raise of global environmental awareness, government continuously promotes environmental laws to decrease the impact of the waste on the environment effectively. In addition to meet the needs of customers and make a profit, enterprises should be responsible to try their best to protect the environment, taking the long profits of whole society and environment into account. Green supply chains contain "forward supply chains" and "reverse supply chains." The purpose of this paper is to improve the recycling and reuse of products as well as to reduce the waste by the design of easy recycling, renewable and eco-friendly products. The study here is conducting with qualitative research, and the main data is constructed by interviewing the related companies and people who are in the industry in depth. In addition, reference journals, theses, and websites about environment are presented in case study. This paper is to analyze the strategy of domestic auto components retailers to growing up with the eco-friendly concept “reverse supply chain,” redesign and re-plan the strategy. Finally, use the analysis to develop into different business model, and study vertical integration, barriers to enter the industry and diversification strategy. The main idea of this paper is to research and study the above and related issues. This research finds that the example company possesses complete core resources because of its owned resources and abilities, including retail channels for auto parts components, auto repair shop, and factories to recycling, reuse and repair auto parts. The companies enter the industry of auto parts recycling by vertical integration to achieve stable supply and profit increase purposes. The example company will keep growing in the future due to its core competence-the advantages of technique, producing, price, cost, channel or service. The distance to the target customers will be reduced with less agents, and simultaneously, barriers to enter the industry will rise for those potential entrants; thereby extended the enterprise competitive advantage.

Among the entire industrial structures in Taiwan, auto parts industry is the one entitled with global competitiveness. In particularly, after Taiwan signed Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) with China on June 29, 2010, the import tariff from Taiwan to China will enjoy down to zero percent privileges in two years. As a result, it is worthwhile to pay attention to the issue of whether such potential profit from auto parts industry will reflect on the stock price from capital market to benefit all investors. This study collected relevant information from public companies in the auto parts industry, calculate the level of industrial cluster and financial ratio of each company through the database, and analyze the competitiveness of the whole industry and each individual company. Further study is on the relevancy between competitiveness and stock returns. The objective through such substantial evidence is to understand how the competitiveness of auto parts industry will reflect on the stock price, and differentiate outstanding successful factors of each company in the auto parts industry. The substantial case analysis of this study demonstrated that there is an upward trend on the level of industrial cluster, while the competitiveness of the entire industry shown an economic cycle. There is no significant relationship between average stock returns in the industry and industrial structure. In terms of individual companies, the stronger individual competitiveness has higher stock returns. There is a non-linear relationship between return of investment in the industry to the industrial structure, except under the condition of non-monopoly and incomplete competition where it has positive impact to the return of investment.

In recent years, with the rapid development process, the China market has undergone tremendous changes. Many industries have begun to appear the phenomenon of market integration. Among them, the automobile market is more prominent, with the trend of strong and strong, and weak and weak. The China auto market is gradually merging to the market allocation of no more than 10 automakers. At the same time, the market of new energy vehicles is emerging, and market share is gradually shifting due to government policies. Faced with such a market environment, how to grasp key account and make efficient resource investment will become the most important issue for auto parts suppliers.   In the past, foreign researches on key account were roughly classified into three parts: the layout of organizational resources, the role of sales managers, and the relationship strategy of key customers. Under the customer-oriented organizational atmosphere, the relationship strategy is regarded as the benchmark to guide enterprises to construct key account management system. Due to the relatively high price, long life and high security of the products in the automobile industry, the cooperation of the automobile industry in the past has been steadily established on the long-term contract with of high trust and high relationship between the two parties. Therefore, the relationship strategy of key account is particularly important for auto parts suppliers. However, under the circumstance of limited organizational resources of suppliers, it is necessary to evaluate customer attraction for key customers and construct the relationship strategy. Therefore, this study is mainly to explore the fit relationship strategy for key customers. However, there are three major gaps in relationship strategies:   Lack of customer attraction evaluation. 2. Lack of customer expectations evaluation for relationship strategies. 3. Lack of cost assessment of relationship strategies.      Based on the social exchange theory, this study will use the focus group method to evaluate three indicators, such as customer attraction, customer expectation of relationship strategy and cost of relationship strategy, and then estimate the appropriate relationship strategy combination model. Finally, it will take the case company as an example to introduce the indicators and derive the results.

Quality is one of utensils for enterprise competition. That is the reason why quality activity requires to pay more attention in most of enterprises, in which one shall take an integration system to cash the essence of quality management after to follow on the enterprise total quality management and six sigma actions. In order to carry out the quality actions and integration results, one shall apply some schemes for taking the quality performance management evaluation system. This thesis employs the auto parts industry as an example for study. It is intended to make the integration of total quality management and six sigma as the target of verification to confer the model of total quality management and six sigma, and use the quality index to identify as beneficial result and performance. To undertake the lift-off of international world trade barrier around the world, the relationship of international business behavior is not just the competition; in stead, the collaboration or cooperation among the enterprises becomes complex and intriguing which may include the virtual supply chain and work-sharing system. Hence, it will not merely consider a single company's business on research and development, manufacturing, marketing, after-sell services. On the contrary, the contemporary business model is indeed facing a very new challenging and requires immediate modification and revision. With much less core technology controlled by the enterprise, the present study indicates that using the total quality management and six-sigma with quality performance index evaluation can effectively promote the enterprise management performance, after the analysis of the questionnaire survey designed in the present thesis. It also reveals the importance when one integrates different quality systems. The outside quality performance evaluation index and the inside performance management index will be the most important reference of quality performance evaluation in auto parts industry. The quality strategy will be used as the quality performance evaluation model to select the factors depending on the different customer satisfaction.

Chosen as the most influential management instrument in the past 75 years by Harvard Business Review, Balanced Scorecard can be utilized for the management, clarification and communication of business strategies. Aided by Balanced Scorecard, enterprises can now check if their strategies are successfully implemented. Yet because some researches indicate that there still exists some problem concerning the implementation of strategies, It is to our belief that if a check list can be made specifically to explain the details on the usage of the Balanced Scorecard, we can minimize the difficulties concerning its implementations, and to use the method even more accurately in daily practice. This research follows the 5 major principles of The Strategy-focused Organization, along with combining previous research results on the success, failure and professional studies of Balanced Scorecard into a questionnaire. We use methods of case study to observe the execution process and conduct interviews with different levels of personals in a medium-scaled auto part firm, in the end create the “Check List for the implementation of Balanced Scorecard under the 5 major principles of The Strategy-focused Organization” for the implementation of Balanced Scorecard through research and comparisons. The conclusions of research are as follows: 1. “Structural Process for the building of Strategy-focused Organization under Balanced Scorecard” can be implemented on a medium-scaled organization in the auto part industry. 2. To carry out the implementation of Balanced Scorecard, appropriate changes will occur throughout various stages, and the continuity of communication must be sustained. 3. For enterprises of different sizes or industries, adequate adjustments must be made during the implementation of “Check List for the implementation of Balanced Scorecard under the 5 major principles of The Strategy-focused Organization”. The important suggestions made by this research are as follows: 1. The preparation for the implementation of Balanced Scorecard must be thorough. 2. To implement a strategy successfully, the strategy itself must be systematically converted into Strategy Maps, Key Performance Index, Target Value and Action Plan. 3. Executives must be willing to participate in the Plan-Do-Check-Action management cycle. 4. Managers must collect information concerning environmental variables, and to integrate the information system for the dynamic changes of the strategy itself.

Taiwan’s auto industry began with Taiwan Yulon Motor Company in 1957, as well as with the development of the related auto parts and components industry. After more than four decades, most companies have developed flexible production skills that allow them to produce a comprehensive assortment of auto parts and components in small quantities that meet international quality standards. The new wave of electronics manufacturing companies have devoted a large percentage of their resources to automotive products, either at their home base, or at their manufacturing facilities abroad. The QS-9000 Quality management system is a fundamental requirement for automotive parts suppliers. The main purpose of this thesis is to research the relationship between the implementation of QS-9000 and customer satisfaction. This study is focused on this inter-action from three perspectives: formulation, implementation and customer satisfaction. Key success factors such as; steering team, organization, target, criteria, documentation, training, standardization and auditing have been defined and studied for their effects on the QS-9000 management system implementation. Developing and implementation quality system utilizing the criteria given in the ISO 9000 or QS-9000 quality system standard can achieve satisfying customer requirements. The successful implementation of a quality management system can contribute to the overall business efficiency of an organization, such as administration, accounting, engineering, marketing, maintenance and after-sales service. The company shall develop the internal and external customer satisfaction indices to check the customer expectation on their service and product. Quality cost are the costs of putting thing right. The monitor for cost of quality can reduce the non-productivity hours and material scrap then achieves the continual improvement management philosophy. In addition, the surveyed case firms disclosed that the QS-9000 standards indeed helped their organization to upgrade the efficiency and service quality of their operation and as such enhance their company’s image as well as customer satisfaction.

Because automotive market in Taiwan is small, Taiwanese automotive suppliers have difficulty in developing into and competing with global first tier suppliers. In the past decade, the worldwide automotive market has become saturated and has stopped growing while the Chinese automotive industry has been booming. With the appeal of a growing market and low production costs, OEM auto makers and first tier auto suppliers have been entering China one after another, establishing their production sites in China. In past few years, Taiwanese automotive suppliers have also entered overseas markets to seek for new growth opportunities, and China is one of the major destinations. Taiwan, with the advantage of its geographical location, language and cultural background, now has the golden opportunity to enter the global supply chain, via the China market. How to efficiently utilize these advantages and the China market will be a very important issue for the future development of the Taiwanese automotive industry. The following issues will be discussed at this study: 1. The development of the supply chain of auto makers and first tier suppliers in the future. 2. The strategic implication of the China market for Taiwanese automotive suppliers. 3. The China market entrance strategy for Taiwanese automotive suppliers. 4. The opportunities and challenges facing Taiwanese automotive suppliers in China. This study discusses the current status and future development of auto supply chain between auto maker and first tier suppliers, their current status in China, the development of Taiwan automotive industry in Taiwan and China, and success of Taiwan suppliers in entering the China market. The conclusions are as follows: 1. China market has already become an important interface for Taiwan automotive suppliers to enter global supply chain and to compete with other auto parts suppliers. 2. Joint venture and cooperation with other first tier suppliers will be a better entrance strategy rather than FDI(Foreign direct investment). 3. Taiwan auto makers, top 10 China auto makers and other first tier suppliers are the most favorable partners for joint venture when entering China. 4. Broadening the product line is a strategy to strength competitive advantage.

In the age of informationization, business transactions are no longer the same as before. With the changes of the times, the trading model has become more diversified. The early processing and manufacturing industry is very prosperous. By cooperating with traders, it is possible to do business with foreign countries. Many processing manufacturers use the exhibition to expose their companies and open their own channels to communicate with the foreign customers. Since they can have direct connection, manufacturers could earn direct learning and improvement opportunities, process improvement, quality improvement, etc., creating a win-win situation. As for the well developed and globalized generation of information, the traditional processing and manufacturing industry, the exhibition is no longer the only exposure opportunity, and there are more opportunities for channel selection, such as B2B e-commerce platform, the client uses online inquiry, procurement, network Road integrated supply chain and industrial access network However, because the information technology personnel of small and medium-sized enterprises are relatively scarce and cannot be compared with large enterprises, it is quite important to understand the important key factors such as manpower, system and organization when importing e-commerce. In other words, how to successfully introduce e-commerce into the existing operating system? How to find a niche from the change? It is the key to business growth.

The recent financial crisis in 2008 impacted economy and shook business operations globally. Automotive and related auto parts industry had also been affected and many well-known auto companies and auto parts manufacturers were declared bankrupt for operating crisis. Taiwan’s economy was also growth recession for global financial crisis and international trade shrinking. In lieu of the above information, we would like to apply Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate the performance of 4 auto companies and 22 auto parts manufacturers in Taiwan before and after the financial crisis. At the same time, we would like to include its ownership structure, industry type and some other factors, to assess whether any of it will affect performance. All data sources in the period of year 2005 to 2011 are collected from the Market Observation Post System and Taiwan Economic Journal Co., Led. The result of this research provides 3 findings as follow. The operational performances after financial crisis would better than before financial crisis because auto companies and auto parts manufacturers had adopted various contingency measures to reduce operating risk. The operation efficiency in auto companies would better than auto parts manufacturers. In the managers’ shareholding ratio would positive impact of operation efficiency but board size shareholders’ shareholding ratio would negative impact of operation efficiency.

This search is focused on the manufacturers for “ Engine parts”, “Steering System parts”, “Automobile Body parts”, “Burglar Alarms System, Power Window, Electrical Central Power Lock”, “Plastic Components” and etc in domestic Auto / Vehicle Parts & Accessories industries. I studied the relationship between the Auto / Vehicle Parts & Accessories industries and three intellection -“Market Guidance”,“Product Innovation”and “Operation Efficiency”. I expect it would bring inspiration and slight assistance to the policy of operation efficiency for these auto parts manufacturers. There were totally 270 research sheets released and then effective 237 research sheets returned. The effective percentage is about 87.7%. After analyzing the results according to the method of SPSS, here I got a final consequence as below. First, it takes about 0.63 relative factors for the relationship “Market Guidance” to the “Product Innovation”. As a result, the “Market Guidance” affects “Product Innovation” positively and greatly, and then the efficiency strength is great moderately. Second, it takes about 0.45 relative factors for the relationship “Market Guidance” to the “Operation Efficiency”. As a result, the “Market Guidance” affects “Operation Efficiency” positively and the efficiency strength is moderately. Third, it takes about 0.25 relative factors for the relationship “Product Innovation” to the “Operation Efficiency”. As a result, the “Product Innovation” affects “Operation Efficiency” positively and the efficiency strength is mild moderately. Forth, it takes about 0.16 relative factors for the relationship “Market Guidance” come along with “Product Innovation” to the “Operation Efficiency”. As a result, the indirect efficiency is mild moderately. Consequently, we can get a final consequence from the route of SEM(Structural Equation Model)for the relationship between the auto parts manufacturers and each intellection of the “Market Guidance”, “Product Innovation” and “Operation Efficiency”. In the portion of direct effect, there is an apparent and active effect from each route except the route between the “Product Innovation” to “Operation Efficiency”. In the portion of sum effect, the final effect caused by “Market Guidance” is greater than what the “Product Innovation “brings on the whole operation efficiency.

Projects are a major process structure to accomplish many tasks in organizations. A project is a non-routine, complex, one-time effort limited by budget, resources, time and performance specifications designed to meet customer needs. The benefits of project management have been well documented, but project failure rates remain. Given the fact that there has been a low success rate for projects, organizations are in growing need of searching out new means and control for projects. This suggests continued exploration of new process models and organizational structures to foster strong project performance. Projects depend upon the effectiveness of teams to be successful. Formal project management often is critical to the effective and efficient application of scarce organizational resources to compete demands within and across projects. This research took Taiwanese auto parts manufacturers as the research objects, and focused on how to improve project performance in order to promote business competitiveness in Taiwanese auto parts industry by exploring the effects and influences of project coordination, project uncertainty, project interdependence, project cooperation on project performance. The data were collected from 237 manufacturers from the 2008 membership directory published by the most important Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturers Association (TTVMA). The targeted respondents were team leaders, section chiefs, managers, and top managers who actually execute projects and project management in their firms. A research model was developed based on a series of literature reviews and hypotheses development. The research results indicate: (1) there are significant relationships between project coordination, project uncertainty, and project interdependence; (2) administrative coordination and expertise coordination have significant influence on project cooperation; (3) reduced requirement uncertainty and technological uncertainty have significant influence on project interdependence; (4) reduced requirement uncertainty and technological uncertainty have significant influence on project cooperation and project performance; (5) project interdependence has significant influence on project cooperation and project performance; (6) project cooperation has significant influence on project performance.

After Taiwan joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) on January 1, 2002, The environment and policies of the automobile industry have changed, not only including reducing taxes of imported cars and components, but also cancelling the self-produced rate. These changes resulted that the competition between domestic and imported vehicles had been fierce, even the environment of automobile components industry had been influenced badly. The tariff on imported automobile had been reduced from 29.0% in 2002 to 17.5% in 2010. Since 2011, the imported quota of automobiles had been cancelled, and the automobile industry had no longer been closed. The domestic automobile market had been declining for a long time, but the outstanding achievement of automobile components industry didn’t decline. On the opposite, the domestic automobile factories have grown faster against that trend these years. This phenomenon deserves our further discussion. This research has taken eight domestic listed automobile components companies as an object. The quoted passages ranged from 2002 to 2017. The research has used Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA), Windows Analysis and Regression Analysis, investigating whether there’s any influence of automobile components industry because of the failure of domestic automobile policies and the change of the marketing structure. The conclusions of this research are as follows: 1. The results of DEA The automobile components industry wasn’t obviously affected by the entry into WTO in 2002, the financial crisis in 2008 and the open of automobile imported market in 2011. Especially the automobile lamps industry had behaved the best. Conversely, the automobile tires industry had behaved much worse years and years. 2. The results of regression analysis of financial performance: (1) Common characteristics of the automobile lamps industry performance. During the period of the decreasing of tariff, there was a decreasing trend in financial performance, and that had been rebounded after the period was ended. (2) There’s some different opinions on the influence which the sheet metal components industry had been influenced by the WTO’s decreasing tariff. Being opposite from the automobile lamps industry, the automobile tires industry has some common characteristics in performance and efficiency. (3) The financial performances of that was rising during the decreasing tariffs period, but that had decreased a lot after that.
