Pre-eclampsia is a common disorder, specific to human pregnancy and a major cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. The cause is unknown but the syndrome is thought to be the result of generalised endothelial dysfunction. Peripheral blood monocytes, exquisitely sensitive cells pivotal to the immunosurveillance role of the innate immune system, interact with genetically different fetal derived cells, cellular organelles and secreted products throughout pregnancy.
