Abstract:
In this paper, we propose an automated calibration system for an eye-tracked autostereoscopic display (ETAD). Instead of calibrating each device sequentially and individually, our method calibrates all parameters of the devices at the same time in a fixed environment. To achieve this, we first identify and classify all parameters by establishing a physical model of the ETAD and describe a rendering method based on a viewer’s eye position. Then, we propose a calibration method that estimates all parameters at the same time using two images. To automate the proposed method, we use a calibration module of our own design. Consequently, the calibration process is performed by analyzing two images captured by onboard camera of the ETAD and the external camera of the calibration module. For validation, we conducted two types of experiments, one with simulation for quantitative evaluation, and the other with a real prototype ETAD device for qualitative assessment. Experimental results demonstrate the crosstalk of the ETAD was improved to 8.32%. The visual quality was also improved to 30.44% in the peak-signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and 40.14% in the structural similarity (SSIM) indexes when the proposed calibration method is applied. The whole calibration process was carried out within 1.5 s without any external manipulation.

Abstract:
Abstract The first Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast, Version 3–epidemic-type aftershock sequence (UCERF3-ETAS) aftershock simulations were running on a high-performance computing cluster within 33 min of the 4 July 2019 M 6.4 Searles Valley earthquake. UCERF3-ETAS, an extension of the third Uniform California Earthquake Rupture Forecast (UCERF3), is the first comprehensive, fault-based, epidemic-type aftershock sequence (ETAS) model. It produces ensembles of synthetic aftershock sequences both on and off explicitly modeled UCERF3 faults to answer a key question repeatedly asked during the Ridgecrest sequence: What are the chances that the earthquake that just occurred will turn out to be the foreshock of an even bigger event? As the sequence unfolded—including one such larger event, the 5 July 2019 M 7.1 Ridgecrest earthquake almost 34 hr later—we updated the model with observed aftershocks, finite-rupture estimates, sequence-specific parameters, and alternative UCERF3-ETAS variants. Although configuring and running UCERF3-ETAS at the time of the earthquake was not fully automated, considerable effort had been focused in 2018 on improving model documentation and ease of use with a public GitHub repository, command line tools, and flexible configuration files. These efforts allowed us to quickly respond and efficiently configure new simulations as the sequence evolved. Here, we discuss lessons learned during the Ridgecrest sequence, including sensitivities of fault triggering probabilities to poorly constrained finite-rupture estimates and model assumptions, as well as implications for UCERF3-ETAS operationalization.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Results of a 19 m3 demonstration plant studies are summarized. The plant is located at Sturgeon Falls at a NSSC mill and hardboard plant owned by MacMillan Bloedel. The mill discharges 6300 m3/day of waste effluent containing 50 tonnes of BOD and 127 tonnes of COD. Lab scale testing (1983) and an 18 month 1.4 m3 reactor volume pilot plant study (1985) were completed confirming treatability of the wastewater and suitability of the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) technology among others to successfully treat the mill wastewater. Discharged effluent contains spent sulphite liquor and primary clarifier effluent. As required, the 1.4 m3 Biopaq System successfully achieved BOD reductions in excess of 75 percent at loadings greater than 10 kg COD/m3.d. As a consequence of this and because of economic considerations, the Biopaq System of Paques-Lavalin was selected for on site demonstration during a 12 months period. This period started in spring 1986. Erection of a full-scale plant is planned to take place in 1988. The purpose of the on site demonstration study is to confirm wastewater treatability, optimize design loading rates and confirm granular sludge growth. To achieve the objectives and simulate full-scale operating conditions the MacMillan Bloedel pilot plant has been automated and is controlled via a microprocessor incorporating a customized software program. Start-up performance results and operation at incremental loadings under steady state conditions are presented together with the experience gained during extreme variations in mill effluent quality and flow. Preliminary study results from the first 10 months disclose that a BOD removal efficiency of 80 percent or better is achieved at weekly average loadings of 15 kg COD/m3.d, and the process offers strong resilience to daily swings in wastewater quality. The results also show a net accumulation of granular sludge. The practical application of this technology from a mill operating perspective is discussed, and the layout for a full-scale installation with projected capital and operating costs is provided. Most of the contents of this paper was presented at the Tappi 1987 Environmental Conference (Prong etal, 1987). This paper presents the latest results.

Abstract:
<p>Mathematical models possible to simulate are of great importance in order to make successful projects in the aircraft manufacturing industry. An aircraft fuel system is very complex, containing pipes, tanks, orifices, valves and pumps. The principal of this thesis is using the tool Easy5, which no longer is considered reliable enough in terms of development and support. This thesis tries to evaluate the Modelica language as a possible alternative to Easy5. To make this evaluation, the components concerned in the fuel library in Easy5 are implemented to the Modelica language. Small hydraulic systems are built up in Dymola, and verified against Easy5 through simulation with high accuracy.</p><p>A model of the fuel system of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is built from the implemented Modelica components to examine how Dymola manage a large model. The simulation made in Dymola was considerably more time efficient than the one made in Easy5, in the range of minutes instead of hours. Thus, much time can be saved if Dymola is used instead of Easy5.</p><p>Finally, the components in the fuel library handle a two phase flow of fuel and air. Modeling a two phase flow is not trivial and discontinuous mass flow and pressure values are also implemented and discussed.</p><br><p>För att driva framgångsrika projekt inom flygindustrin är det av stor vikt att ha matematiska modeller som kan simuleras.

This report deals with a degree project done at Goodtech Solutions AB in Karlstad. The degree project is a conclusion to the Bachelor of Science program in mechanical engineering at Karlstad University. The aim of the project was to develop a new type of solution for a framework for a bulk handling line to make production more efficient and thus increase the profitability of the product. The product development process was based on the method for the project and by following the different phases step-by-step, a number of concepts could be developed. From these, a final concept selection could be made and then create a CAD model with strength calculations as a basis. The new design solves the previous problems with a robust frame and simplified design and complete access to maintenance points. The framework is designed with regard to the inner dimensions of an ISO container and is also dimensioned for both black steel and stainless steel, which has resulted in an increased flexibility of the product.

<p>A modern fighter aircraft is exposed to very different flight conditions and must despite that perform infallibly in every single situation. Several variables like center of gravity, speed, altitude and weight vary during a standard mission flight or</p><p>between flights. For the aircraft to be able to perform effectively, superior manoeuvrability is vital. Hence it is of great importance that the flight control system is capable to cope with these different variations.</p><p>In the 1960s professor Isaac Horowitz presented the method Quantitative feedback theory (QFT) which is a method whose aim is to manage system variations. The method can be useful in the construction of the control system for a fighter aircraft. QFT is a frequency based method whose main objective is to shape the</p><p>open loop gain in a Nicholschart to meet the required closed loop demands. A prefilter is then applied to achieve correct reference tracking.</p><p>This thesis is divided into two parts, where the first part presents the method QFT for both the SISO-systems and for the MIMO-systems. For the MIMOsystems several design techniques are presented, the chapter also includes a method on the implementation of state feedback. Furthermore statements of how nonlinear and unstable systems are handled with the QFT is included.</p><p>The second part of the thesis presents the design of a control system for an unstable fighter aircraft. The design is constructed for the SISO longitudinal dynamics as well as for the MIMO lateral dynamics, where the design must be robust against variations in speed, altitude and center of gravity.</p><p>The flight control system that is implemented meets almost all requirements and gives good preformance and this is achieved with only a few regulators. Proposals of possible solutions to those requirements note yet reached are discusssed.</p>

Abstract:

Abstract:
Properly approached, molecular sequence data is a rich source of knowledge capable of teaching us much about the structure, function, and evolution of biological macromolecules. To effectively realize this potential, however, some understanding of the process of and theoretical basis for sequence comparison is needed as well as a variety of practical tools to access and manipulate the data. The volume of molecular sequence data has long since surpassed human information processing capacity for even simple tasks such as searching for related sequences, and with the ever increasing rate at which new sequences are being produced, the need for computer-assisted analysis becomes more and more acute. Automated tools can extend human capabilities by orders of magnitude in both speed and accuracy. The educated application of these automated tools is an essential part of modern molecular biology research. This chapter considers the theory and practice of analyzing sequence similarity as it applies to database searching and sequence alignment. Five major areas will be examined. First, we describe the use of dot matrix plots to elucidate the structures and features relating a sequence pair. Secondly, we discuss optimal pairwise alignment of sequences using dynamic programming algorithms. Thirdly, we examine fast, approximate techniques for detecting local similarities. Fourthly, the uses of and techniques for multiple sequence alignment are described. Finally, the statistical significance of sequence similarity is considered. In the analysis of molecular sequences, the terms similarity andhomology are often used without a clear understanding of their distinct implications. Similarity is a descriptive term which only implies that two sequences, by some criterion, resemble each other and carries no suggestion as to their origins or ancestry. Homology refers specifically to similarity due to descent from a common ancestor (Patterson, 1988;Reeck etal., 1987). On the basis of similarity relationships among a group of sequences, it may be possible to infer homology, but outside of an explicit laboratory model system, descent from a common ancestor remains hypothetical. There are philosophical issues in the inference of homology as well as practical ones. In classical morphology, conjunction (the occurrence of two traits in a single individual) is considered evidence that they are not homologous (Patterson, 1982).
