Ollakka, I. (Ilkka). "CERN library Thin Client System modernization." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2013. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201305131249.

Abstract:
The goal of this Master’s thesis is to modernize the CERN library public terminal system. With modernization the aim was set to minimize the administrative burden on library staff from the new system. Modernization focuses on replacing the currently used Linux based thin client system that suffers from hardware ageing with a system that resides in the CERN-IT operated private cloud. Another aspect in modernization was to utilize the provided network infrastructure more to simplify system complexity and the amount of remote components that require library staff maintenance and administration. The new system differentiates from a traditional LTSP-system by dividing every thin client into a different virtual machine. By distributing every thin client in our own virtual host, we can distribute resource allocation, like CPU-time and physical memory, between different physical hosts. The system also contains monitoring features that informs administrative problems that have been noted. Monitoring decreases the time required for dealing with system maintenance. Linux-based thin client remote connection efficiencies are compared using UI-latency and bandwidth efficiency as metrics. A plain X11 connection is measured against an NX-connection and an SSH-tunneled X11 connection. Results show NX bandwidth efficiency that comes from utilizing an extra caching layer. Measurements for overall latency and bandwidth usage are presented
Tässä diplomityössä modernisoidaan CERN:n kirjaston käytössä olevat asiakaspäätteet. Modernisoinnin tarkoituksena on vähentää asiakaspäätteistä mahdollisesti aiheutuvaa ylläpitokuormaa kirjaston henkilökuntaa kohtaan. Pääsuunta modernisaatiossa on rakentaa uusi asiakaspäätejärjestelmä vanhan LTSP järjestelmän tilalle, joka kärsii palvelinraudan vanhenemisesta, hyödyntäen CERN-IT:n operoimaa sisäistä pilvipalvelua sekä jo olemassa olevaa verkkoinfrastruktuuria. Rakennettu järjestelmä poikkeaa perinteisestä LTSP-järjestelmästä määrittelemällä jokaiselle päätteelle erillisen virtuaalikoneen johon kytkeytyä. Erillisillä virtuaalikoneilla saadaan käyttäjien varaamia resursseja kuten CPU-aikaa ja fyysistä muistia hajautettua useammalle fyysiselle palvelimelle. Järjestelmä sisältää myös proaktiivisen monitoroinnin joka ilmoittaa havaituista ongelmista ylläpitovastuussa olevia henkilöitä eikä näin vaadi järjestelmän aktiivista tarkkailua ylläpitovastuussa olevilta henkilöiltä. Linux-pohjaisten tyhmien päätteiden etäyhteys-protokollien tehokkuutta vertaillaan käyttämällä käyttöliittymän latenssia ja kaistankulutusta mittareina. Normaalia X11 yhteyttä verrataan yleisesti käytettyyn SSH-tunneloituun X11 yhteyteen sekä NX-yhteyteen. Tulokset osoittavat NX-yhteyden ylimääräisen välimuistin tehostavan kaistankäyttöä. Abstract:
Thesis (M. Tech.) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2007
With technology advancing, more and more people turn to the World Wide Web to conduct business. This may include buying and selling on the Web, advertising and monitoring of business activities. There is a big need for software and systems that enable remote monitoring and controlling of business activities. The Mechatronics Research Group of the Faculty of Engineering, Information and Communication Technology at the Central University of Technology, Free State, has identified a similar need. This research group has created an Automated Manufacturing System around which research topics revolve. They want to monitor this Automated Manufacturing System from remote locations like their offices or, if possible, from home. The Remote Information Management (RIM) System was developed, using the Rapid Application Development (RAD) Methodology. The reasons why this methodology was used, is because it is the best to use in a changing environment, when the system needs to be developed very quickly and when most of the data is already available. This is a good description of the Automated Manufacturing System’s environment. The RAD methodology consists of four stages: Requirements Planning, User Design, Rapid Construction and Transition. Project Management is used throughout these stages to ensure that the project goes according to plan. Development of the RIM system went through all four stages and project management was applied. The final system consisted of a Web Page with Web Camera views of the Automated Manufacturing System. The application that was developed using National Instruments LabVIEW, Microsoft Visual C++, and Microsoft Excel, is embedded in this Web Page. This application is called a Virtual Instrument (VI). The VI shows real-time data from the Automated Manufacturing System. Control over the VI can be granted and will allow the remote user to create reports on how many different products was produced and system downtimes. A system like the RIM System has advantages in the business world. It can enable telecommuting and will allow employees and managers to monitor (and even control) manufacturing systems, or any system connected to a PLC, from remote locations.

Abstract:

Public and private organizations face the challenges of protecting their networks from cyber-attacks, while reducing the amount of time and money spent on Information Technology. Organizations can reduce their expenditures by reusing server, switch and router hardware, but they must use reliable and efficient methods of sanitizing these devices before they can be redeployed. The sanitization process removes proprietary, sensitive or classified data, as well as persistent malware from a device prior to reuse. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory has developed an automated, rapid, and secure method for sanitizing servers, switches and routers. This sanitization method was implemented and tested on several different types of network devices during the Cyber Measurement & Analysis Center project, which was funded under Phases I and II of the DARPA National Cyber Range program. The performance of the automated sanitization system was excellent with an order of magnitude reduction in the time required to sanitize servers, routers and switches, and a significant improvement in the effectiveness of the sanitization process through the addition of persistent malware removal.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the possibility to automate testing of PCBs with a sensor system.  This PCB testing is today done manually by placing PCBs in a test fixture that determines its condition. This test requires an operator to wait for the test to complete and then place the PCB in the correct section. If this process can be automated time could be saved and the risk of mishandling PCBs could be reduced. A sensors system is made that consists of an Arduino with micro switches, hall effect sensors, a scanner and a LiDAR. The sensor system is designed to achieve a set of requirements that is needed for automation. The sensor system is meant to communicate with a robot that moves the PCBs within a test environment. This test environment is also designed in this project. For the system to communicate with a robot a program is made to inform the robot about placement of PCBs within the test environment. The final system is able to achieve the requirements set for automation but further investigation is needed to make this into a fully scaled automated system.

Abstract:
This thesis describes WebDoc, an automated system that classifies Web documents according to the Library of Congress classification system. This work is an extension of an early version of the system that successfully generated indexes for journal articles. The unique features of Web documents, as well as how they will affect the design of a classification system, are discussed. We argue that full-text analysis of Web documents is inevitable, and contextual information must be used to assist the classification. The architecture of the WebDoc system is presented. We performed experiments on it with and without the assistance of contextual information. The results show that contextual information improved the system?s performance significantly.

Abstract:
Library automation in Ghana began barely 13 years ago with the University of Ghana Balme Library being the first to start automation in 2003. Library automation is attained by means of a specific type of information system, an integrated library system (ILS). Given that modern academic libraries rely heavily on their ILS to meet user needs, the success of the ILS is vital. In 1999 Farajpahlou published a set of 26 criteria to assess the success of ILS in university libraries that was subsequently validated in both developing and developed countries (Iran and Australia). In this case study of the University of Ghana Library System (UGLS) Farajpahlou‟s original set of criteria was assessed for applicability and used to assess the success of the UGLS by surveying 28 randomly selected library managers, IT specialists and selected paraprofessionals who work with the UGLS ILS. The study showed that, in the opinion of these respondents, the UGLS ILS conclusively satisfies 13 out of the 16 criteria accepted by the research respondents out of the 26 criteria that constitute the Farajpahlou (1999, 2002) success criteria. This outcome suggests that the UGLS ILS may not be conclusively deemed to be successful. Furthermore, the study also suggests that, although Farajpahlou‟s success criteria can serve as a basis for the assessment of ILS success in academic libraries, some criteria may need to be altered or removed and additional criteria added to make it a more robust set of criteria to assess ILS success globally. This research contributes to studies that seek to assess the success of library automation in academic libraries in Ghana and also contribute to the development of potentially suitable success assessment criteria, which may be of value to both researchers and practitioners. Abstract:
In spite of hard real-time embedded systems often being seemingly simple, modern embedded system designs often incorporate features such as multiple processors and complex inter-processor communication. In situations where safety is critical, such as in for instance many automotive applications, great demand is put on developers to prove correctness. The ForSyDe research project aims to remedy this problem by providing a design philosophy based on the theory of models of computation which aims to formally ensure predictability and correctness by design. A system designed with the ForSyDe design methodology consists of a well defined system model which can be refined by design transformations until it is mappable onto an application specific predictable hardware template. This thesis evaluates one such hardware template called the predictable System-on-a-Programmable-Chip. This hardware template was developed during the work on a masters thesis by Marcus Mikulcak [7] in 2013. The evaluation was done by creating many simple dual processor systems using the automated design flow provided by PSOPC. Using these systems, the time to communicate data between the processors was measured and compared against the claims made in [7]. The results presented in this thesis suggests that the current implementation of the PSOPC platform is not yet mature enough for production use. Data collected from many different configurations show that many of the generated systems exhibit unacceptable anomalies. Some systems would not start at all, and some systems could not communicate the data properly. Although this thesis does not propose solutions to the problems found herein, it serves to show that further work on the PSOPC platform is necessary before it can be incorporated into the larger context of the ForSyDe platform. However, it is the author’s genuine hope that the reader will gain appreciation for PSOPC as an idea, and that this work can instil interest into further working on perfecting it, so that it can serve as a part of ForSyDe in the future.

Gasson, Susan. "Co-operative information system design : how multi-domain information system design takes place in UK organisations." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1997. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/4240/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis focussed on the need to understand the nature of design processes in innovative, multi-domain, organisational information systems design. A cross-disciplinary, interpretive investigation of organisational IS design was based upon multiple literatures: information system development and methodologies, human-computer interaction, situated action, social psychology, psychology of programming, computer-supported co-operative work, computer science, design 'rationale' and organisational behaviour. Three studies were performed: 1. A case study of a user-centred design project, employing grounded theory analysis. 2. A postal survey of IS development approaches in large UK companies. 3. A longitudinal field study, involving participant observation over a period of 18 months in a cross-domain design team, employing ethnography, discourse analysis and hermeneutics. The main contributions of this research were to provide rich insights into the interior nature of IS design activity, situated in the context of the organisation (a perspective which is largely missing from the literature); to provide conceptual models to explain the management of meaning in design, and design framing activity; to produce a social action model of organisational information system development which may form the basis for communicating the situated nature of design in teaching; and to suggest elements of a process model of design activity in multi-domain, organisational information system development. The implications of the research findings for IS managers and developers are also considered a significant contribution to practice. Detailed findings from these studies relate to: I. Disparities between the technology-centred view of organisational IS development found in the literature and the business and organisation-based approaches reported in the survey. 2. The role of pre-existing 'investment in form' in shaping the meaning of design processes and outcomes for other team members and its implications for the management of expertise and for achieving double-loop leaming. 3. The detailed processes by which design is framed at individual and group levels of analysis. These findings indicated a mismatch between "top down" models of organisational IS design and observed design "abstraction" processes, which were grounded in concrete analogies and local exemplars; this finding has significant implications for organisational design approaches, such as Business Process Redesign. 4. The distributed nature of group design, which has implications for achieving a 'common vision' of the design and for the division of labour in design groups. Intersubjectivity with respect to process objectives may be more critical to design success than intersubjectivity with respect to the products of design. - 5. The political nature of design activity: it was concluded that an effective design process must manage conflict between the exploration of organisational possibilities and influential, external stakeholders' expectations of efficiency benefits. 6. Design suffers from legitimacy problems related to the investigation of a "grey area" between explicit system design goals and boundary and emergent definitions of design goals and target system boundaries; this issue needs to be managed both internally to the design-team and externally, in respect of stakeholders and influential decision-makers. It is argued that the situated nature of design requires the teaching of design skills to be achieved through simulated design contexts, rather than the communication of abstract models. It is also suggested that the findings of this thesis have implications for knowledge management and organisational innovation. If organisational problem-investigation processes are seen as involving distributed knowledge, then the focus of organisational learning and innovation shifts from sharing organisational knowledge to accessing distributed organisational knowledge which is emergent and incomplete.

Abstract:
Standardized information and mathematicalmodels, which model the characteristics of the power generationand power transmission systems, are requirements for futuredevelopment and maintenance of different applications tooperate the electrical grid. Available databases such as Nordpoolprovides large amounts of data for power supply and demand [1].The typical misconception with open availability of data is thatexisting power system software tools can interact and process thisdata. Difficulties occur mainly because of two reasons. The firston is the amount of data produced. When the topology of theelectrical grid changes e.g. when a switch opens or closes, the flowof electrical power changes. This event produce changes ingeneration, transmission and distribution of the energy anddifferent data sets are produced. The second problem is therepresentation of information [2]. There are a limited number ofsoftware tools that can analyze this data, but each software toolrequires a specific data format structure to run. Dealing withthese difficulties requires an effective way to transform theprovided data representation into new data structures that canbe used in different execution platforms. This project aims tocreate a generic Model-to-Text (M2T) transformation capable oftransforming standardized power system information modelsinto input files executable by the Power System Analysis Tool(PSAT). During this project, a working M2T transformation wasnever achieved. However, missing functionality in someprograms connected to sub processes resulted in unexpectedproblems. This led to a new task of updating the informationmodel interpreter PyCIM. This task is partially completed andcan load basic power system information models.

Abstract:
Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) is a computer system for analysing, and monitoring data, as well as, controlling a plant in industries such as power grids, oil, gas refining, and water control. SCADA belongs to the category of critical systems that are needed to maintain the infrastructure of cities and households. Therefore, the security aspect of such a system has a significant role. The early SCADA systems were designed with the operation as the primary concern rather than security since they were a monolithic networked system without external access. However, the systems evolved, and SCADA systems were embedded with web technologies for users to monitor the data externally. These changes improved the efficiency of monitoring and productivity; however, this caused a problem of potential cyber-attacks to a SCADA system. One such example was Ukraine’s power grid blackout in 2015. Therefore, it is beneficial for the security of a SCADA system to create a threat modeling technique that can understand the critical components of SCADA, discover potential threats, and propose possible mitigation strategies. One issue when creating a threat model is the significant difference of SCADA from traditional Operational Technology (OT) systems. Another significant issue is that SCADA is a highly customisable system, and each SCADA instance can have different components. Therefore, for this work, we implemented a threat modeling language scadaLang, which is specific to the domain of a SCADA system. We started by defining the major assets of a SCADA system, attackers, entry surfaces, and built attacks and defense strategies. Then we developed a threat modeling domain-specific language scadaLang that can create a threat model for a particular instance of SCADA taking the differences in components and connections into account. As a result, we achieved a threat modeling language for SCADA, ensured the reliability of the results by peer-reviewing of an engineer familiar with the domain of the problem, and proposed a Turing test to ensure the validity of the result of scadaLang as the future development of the project.

A state-of-the-art management information system which would allow a Type Command to efficiently control assigned assets by thorough integration of the many currently distinct mangement systems is critical in this era of rapid technological growth, data overabundance, and expanding naval commitments. A significant problem with the current development of such a system is its inherent large size and a requirement to use an unproven methodology, Information Engineering (IE). This thesis analyzes the modernization of the Type Commander Headquarters Automated Information System, THAIS, identifies problems related to the effort and discusses the use of IE on a major redesign project.

Abstract:
Resource sharing is considered to be one of the most important pillars of library service, because no single library can meet all the needs of its users. Libraries have always cooperated to meet the increasing demands of users by sharing their resources. In the past few decades, the need to establish library consortia emerged more strongly as libraries began to take advantage of technology to improve access to information and service delivery. There has been a notable increase in the formation of library consortia on the African continent. South Africa has taken the lead both in the amount of established consortia and the number of member libraries within them. This development accompanied the implementation of common library systems in consortia, where a single system is adopted by all member libraries. In the Southern African region, the library system called INNOPAC/Millennium Pac has already been adopted by consortia and libraries in Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. The recently-established Lesotho Library Consortium (LELICO) also recognized the need for a comprehensive investigation to identify a common system that will effectively meet the needs of its member libraries. The purpose of this study was to analyze the successes and limitations of the INNOPAC library system operating in consortia and libraries in the Southern African region, in order to assess its suitability for LELICO. The study focused on two South African consortia (The Gauteng and Environs Library Consortium – GAELIC, and The Free State Library and Information Consortium - FRELICO), two university libraries (Namibia and Zimbabwe) and one agricultural college library (Botswana) in the Southern African region that use the system. A special emphasis was the criteria of assessment that would apply to a small, multi-type consortium in a developing country like Lesotho. Data was collected through a literature search, questionnaires, interviews, site visits, and analysis of policy and institutional documents. The target groups of the study were the library managers, system managers, and library professionals of selected GAELIC and FRELICO libraries, and the system managers of the three selected libraries in the region. The study found that the INNOPAC library system is performing satisfactorily in the chosen consortia and libraries, and that it has a positive impact on them. It performed to a high standard in all the key areas, and this may be attributed to keeping abreast of the latest developments in the library world, and offering a range of services that meet the needs of libraries. The study found further that the INNOPAC library system contributed towards increased productivity, improved customer services, and better decision making in the two consortia. However, direct access to members’ holdings was restricted by a decentralized server model adopted by these consortia. This and other lessons shaped a proposal for the implementation and management of the INNOPAC library system in LELICO. A proposed model recommends a central server as a more cost-effective management solution. The model also explains the mode of operation by member libraries and the coordinated structures that would implement and manage the INNOPAC library system, adapted to the specific requirements of a small, multi-type consortium in a developing country like Lesotho. Given its successful performance in consortia and libraries across Southern African countries, the study recommends further research into the advantages and challenges of INNOPAC for wider regional library cooperation.

Gregory, Peggy. "Crossing boundaries : patients' experiences of using a diabetes eHealth system." Thesis, University of Central Lancashire, 2012. http://clok.uclan.ac.uk/6582/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with exploring patients’ experiences of using a diabetes eHealth system. The context of the study is the growth of interest in eHealth systems that focus on patient needs, alongside increasing home computer use and the rising incidence of chronic diseases, such as diabetes. I aim in this thesis to make a novel contribution to knowledge about how eHealth technology is experienced by patients with diabetes. The study takes the form of a qualitative enquiry into the use of a diabetes eHealth system by a group of patients and their healthcare practitioners at a primary care general practice in Northern England. Using symbolic interactionism as a methodological perspective and taking elements from grounded theory the study produces a theoretical framework based on a thematic analysis of participants’ descriptions of their experiences of using the eHealth system. A diabetes eHealth system was designed and built for the study, and 38 patients were recruited from a single GP practice using purposive sampling. Participants used the system for six months and were interviewed at the beginning, middle and end of the study period. Issues of surveillance, automation, endorsement and interaction influenced use and experiences of the system. Results from the study indicate that participants use and perceive the eHealth system as part of their diabetes management experience. My thesis is that the eHealth system is a boundary structure through which boundary objects, such as electronically formatted blood glucose readings, are created and shared across different social worlds. The eHealth system crosses the boundary between two spheres of an individual’s diabetes management experience, the personal sphere of self-management, and the external sphere of seeking and receiving support from medical experts and others with diabetes. The co-location of these two spheres exposes participants to scrutiny but also opens up new possibilities for collaboration and learning.

Full text
Abstract:
Classification of the agricultural fields using remote sensing images is one of the most popular methods used for crop mapping. Most recent classification techniques are based on per-field approach that works as assigning a crop label for each field. Commonly, the spatial vector data is used for the boundaries of the fields for applying the classification within them. However, crop variation within the fields is a very common problem. In this case, the existing field boundaries may be insufficient for performing the field-based classification and therefore, image segmentation is needed to be employed to detect these homogeneous segments within the fields. This study proposed a field-based approach to segment the crop fields in an image within the integrated environment of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing. In this method, each field is processed separately and the segments within each field are detected. First, an edge detection is applied to the images, and the detected edges are vectorized to generate the straight line segments. Next, these line segments are correlated with the existing field boundaries using the perceptual grouping techniques to form the closed regions in the image. The closed regions represent the segments each of which contain a distinct crop type. To implement the proposed methodology, a software was developed. The implementation was carried out using the 10 meter spatial resolution SPOT 5 and the 20 meter spatial resolution SPOT 4 satellite images covering a part of Karacabey Plain, Turkey. The evaluations of the obtained results are presented using different band combinations of the images.

Abstract:
More and more complex semi-automated systems are being developed, aiding human operators to collect and analyze data and information and even to recommend decisions and act upon these. The goal of such development is often to support the operators make better decisions faster, while at the same time decrease their workload. However, these promises are not always fulfilled and several incidents have highlighted the fact that the introduction of automated technologies might instead increase the need for human involvement andexpertise in the tasks carried out. The significance of communicating information regarding an automated system's performance and to explain its strengths and limitations to its operators is strongly highlighted within the system transparencyand operator-centered automation literature. However, it is not common that feedback containing system qualifiers is incorporated into the primary displays of the automated system, obscuring its transparency. In this thesis, we deal with the investigation of the effects of explaining and visualizing system reasoning and performance parameters in different domains on the operators' trust, workload and performance. Different proof-of-concept prototypes have been designed with transparency characteristics in mind, and quantitative and qualitative evaluations together with operators of these systems have been carried out. Our results show that the effects of automation transparency can positively influence the performance and trust calibration of operators of complex systems, yet possibly at the costs of higher workload and longer decision-making times. Further, this thesis provides recommendations for designers and developers of automated systems in terms of general design concepts and guidelines for developing transparent automated systems for the future.

Abstract:
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD
The use of Information Systems (ISs) has been widely accepted and proven to increase the service quality in many organizations. Academic libraries have embraced the use of ISs and have implemented them to perform different activities. The efficient utilization and management of ISs in libraries will help libraries to derive maximum benefit from adopted ISs. The research used the DeLone and McLean (2003) IS success theory to determine the impact of IS management on the quality of the IS, the use of the IS and the benefits gained. The researcher used nine (30%) of the thirty university libraries which are members of the consortium of academic and research libraries in Ghana (CARLIGH) - an association of libraries that help with the IS and electronic resource use of member libraries. A mixed method approach with questionnaires, interviews combined with content analysis of the university websites was used to gather data. Findings indicated that academic libraries in Ghana are making use of some ISs including; ILS, DAM, social media, websites, among others, amidst a number of challenges. The research also revealed that the management of ISs affects the quality thereof. Quality of ISs affects use, and use affects the benefits gained from use. The researcher proposed an IS management standard guideline which Ghanaian academic libraries could adopt for using and managing ISs to enhance efficiency and better service delivery.

Lopes, Roseane Regina Velho. "A model and prototype for a community-related information retrieval system for public libraries in Brazil." Thesis, City University London, 1995. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/7546/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research was aimed towards the planning, design and evaluation of an experimental prototype for the systematic organisation, access and retrieval of community information and local studies, henceforth defined jointly as community-related information, for public libraries in Brazil. Community-related information services were identified as areas of modern public librarianship still to be developed in that country. To raise relevant theoretical issues that could be discussed in practice, applied prototyping was chosen as the core methodology for this project. The model proposed was built upon a software especially designed by Unesco for library applications available in Brazil called CDS/ISIS - Computerised Documentation System/Integrated Set of Information Systems. The resulting Automated Library and Community-Related Information System (ALTS) was designed based on a theoretical framework which suggested 1) information repackaging of community-related information concerns represented as A-Z listings with corresponding definitions aimed at encouraging public librarians to create their own community-related information systems; 2) a reference function implicit in the self-defining element of information repackaging and by referring the user to wider library resources to complement a community-related information query, thus encouraging the use of wider library resources, and 3) a referral function to direct users to resources external to the library capable of helping him/her with a community-related information concern and to encourage the inhouse creation of local resources files. This conceptual and practical framework was aimed at encouraging indigenous resources-building and a degree of autonomy for Brazilian public libraries to define and create their own community-related information systems based on their perceptions of community needs. ALTS prototype was made of six menu-driven modules or databases (CITYOR, AZHEAL, AZJOBS, AZLAW, LOCAL and LIBRY), related to one another in content and structure, accessed by a top menu via one-key options. Prototype specifications, database maps, data entry, master file maintenance, information retrieval services and user interfaces were described and illustrated with examples. System evaluation was carried out in Brazil in two selected public libraries which agreed to participate in the evaluation exercise. Evaluation consisted of individual interviews on perception of concepts, self-administered questionnaires on system use and implementation and data collection of real users' queries in Brazil to check whether ALTS could respond to present community-related information needs. Finally, the prototype was reviewed and discussed in the light of trends and developments for community-related information supply worldwide, validity of applied prototyping as the core methodology for this project and the setup of a national infrastructure for community-related information supply based on this research findings. Conclusions and recommendations were also drawn to encourage the development of community-related information activities in Brazil and further implementation of CDS/ISIS.

Abstract:
Today, the web is constantly growing, expanding global information space and more and more data is being processed and sourced online. The amount of electronically accessible and available online information is overwhelming. Increasingly, recommendation systems, which engage in some form of automated personalisation, are hugely prevalent on the web and have been extensively studied in the research literature. Several issues still remain unsolved including high sparsity situation and cold starts (how to recommend content to users who have had little or no prior interaction with the system). Recent work has demonstrated a potential solution in the form of cross-domain user modeling. This thesis will explore the design, implementation and testing of a cross-domain approach using social media data to model rich and effective user preferences and provide empirical evidence of the effectiveness of the approach based on direct real-world user feedback, deconstructing a cross-system news recommendation service where user models are generated via social media data. This will be accomplished by identifying the availability of a source domain from which to draw resources for recommendations and the availability of user profiles that capture a wide range of user interests from different domains. This thesis also demonstrates the viability of generating user models from social media data and evidences that the automated cross-domain approach can be superior to explicit filtering using self-declared preferences and can be further augmented when placing the user with the ability to maintain control over such models. The reasons for these results are qualitatively examined in order to understand why such effects occur, indicating that different models are capturing widely different areas within a user's preference space.

Abstract:

Today, automated software testing has been implemented successfully in many systems, however there does still exist relatively unexplored areas as how automated testing can be implemented in a real-time embedded system. This problem has been the foundation for the work in this master thesis, to investigate the possibility to implement an automated software testing process for the testing of an embedded real-time system at IVU Traffic Technologies AG in Aachen, Germany.

The system that has been the test object is the on board system i.box.

This report contains the result of a literature study in order to present the foundation behind the solution to the problem of the thesis. Questions answered in the study are: when to automate, how to automate and which traps should one avoid when implementing an automated software testing process in an embedded system.

The process of automating the manual process has contained steps as constructing test cases for automated testing, analysing whether an existing tool should be used or a unique test system needs to be developed. The analysis, based on the requirements on the test system, the literature study and an investigation of available test tools, lead to the development of a new test tool. Due to limited devlopement time and characterstics of the i.box, the new tool was built based on post execution evaluation. The tool was therefore divided into two parts, a part that executed the test and a part that evaluated the result. By implementing an automated test tool it has been proved that it is possible to automate the test process at system test level in the i.box.

Abstract:
Existing research has focused on the financial challenges affecting public libraries and how to improve library efficiency and funding. However, it is unknown how financial diversification could improve the economic fortunes of public libraries. The purpose of this study was to illuminate the unique structural, legal, and operational dynamics associated with adopting a financial diversification strategy in the Clayton County Library System (CCLS), Georgia, and to explore what would support or hinder the implementation of such a strategy. Using modern portfolio theory, the research explored how the CCLS could diversify its funding sources. A qualitative single-case study was conducted to gather information from a sample of library personnel: 2 library directors, 7 assistant directors, 6 branch managers, and 3 grant writers. Budget documents and meeting minutes over a 3-year period were also reviewed. The data were analyzed using a content analysis method, and were coded inductively. Interview data were triangulated with the results of a review of budget documents, meeting minutes, and related literature. Study findings revealed that financial diversification was an effective strategy for the participants in this study, but such diversification would be complex for the broader CCLS because of stakeholders' concerns about CCLS's organizational characteristics, legal frameworks, and management attitudes. The study findings may be used as a basis for further empirical investigations on adoption of financial diversification plans in public libraries. Positive social change is expected to result from this study because it provides useful data to policymakers, library administrators, and other stakeholders seeking ways to sustain public library funding.
