Abstract:
Newspapers are often bundled and packet on pallets to secure transport. Packing thebundles on pallets are often done with an automatic palletizer. For reliable operation, the bundle needed to have a correct position and orientation on the infeed conveyor.Wrong orientation can happen when the bundle is pushed from conveyor to thepalletisers conveyor. The main to reasons is wrong timing that leads to rotation of thebundle and to high pushing force that leads to tumbled bundles. The goal of thisproject is to make a prototype of a system that automatically adapts the pressure andsignal when to push using two laser sensors. One sensor sends a digital signal if laserbreaks, the other measure distance, e.g. bundle hight. The software was developed onan Arduino Uno board, and two interface board was made for voltage levelconversions. The prototype system managed to change pressure for different bundlesizes and timed the pushing signal correctly.

Abstract:
In this thesis a method for selecting test cases for test automation is developed and evaluated. Existing methods from the literature has been reviewed and modified resulting in the proposed method, a decision tree containing 23 factors grouped into 8 decision points. The decision tree has been used and evaluated in an industrial setting. The economic benefits were calculated with return on investment and the organisational benefits were measured in a survey at a software producing company. The result was that automated tests, selected with the decision tree, provided economic benefits after 0.5 to 4 years, these tests were also found leading to 3 organisational benefits: less human effort when testing, reduction in cost and allowing for shorter release cycles.

Abstract:
In recent years, the automotive industry has been significantly affected by a number of challenges driven by globalisation, economic fluctuations, environmental awareness and rapid technological developments. As a consequence, product lifecycles are shortening and customer demands are becoming more diverse. To survive in such a business environment, manufacturers are striving to find a costeffective solution for fast and efficient development and reconfiguration of manufacturing systems to satisfy the needs of changing markets without losses in production. Production systems within automotive industry are vastly automated and heavily rely on PLC-based control systems. It has been established that one of the major obstacles in realising reconfigurable manufacturing systems is the fragmented engineering approach to implement control systems. Control engineering starts at a very late stage in the overall system engineering process and remains highly isolated from the mechanical design and build of the system. During this stage, control code is typically written manually in vendor-specific tools in a combination of IEC 61131-3 languages. Writing control code is a complex, time consuming and error-prone process.

This dissertation is a final documentation of the project whose goal is demonstrating manufacturability of soft lithography. Specifically, our target is creating micron scale patterns of resists on a 3 square inch, relatively large area in case of soft lithography, flexible substrate using microcontact printing in order to forming electronic circuit patterns for flexible displays. At first, the general principles and characteristics of soft lithography are reviewed in order to provide the snapshot of soft lithography technologies, and the key factors that affect the productivity and quality of microcontact printing are discussed because such factors should be understood in advanced to develop current lab-based microcontact printing science into plant manufacturing technology. We proposed a prototype for automated of microcontact printing process adopting a continuous reel-to-reel design, ideal for mass production, as well as printing-side-up design in order to minimize the distortion of relief features of PDMS stamp. The machine we created not only demonstrated the manufacturability of microcontact printing, our initial project goal, but also high scalability for mass production. The machine can print micron scale patterns on a 7 square inch plastic sheet, four times bigger than initial target area, at once.

Telecommunication systems, network servers, mainframes, and high-performance computers contain several printed circuit boards (PCBs) that are mounted in card-cage assemblies. Level-3 connectors, often called board-to-board connectors, transmit signals between the primary backplane PCB and the daughter card PCBs. These connectors are customized for each PCB by configuring modules along the length of the connector. Hence, the connector's assembly system must flexibly accommodate the connector configurations. Prior to this research, the assembly of daughter card connectors was a manual process. This thesis presents the conceptual design of an assembly cell, and thoroughly presents the selected concept, a flexible assembly system. In the flexible assembly system, the connector is fixtured on a pallet and transferred to assembly stations on a conveyor. The pallet must be precisely located at each station, to minimize the relative errors between the new component and the connector on the pallet. Kinematic couplings deterministically locate one rigid body with respect to another. Therefore, a pallet system was developed that uses split-groove kinematic couplings between the pallets and machines. Experiments demonstrated that the split-groove kinematic pallet was approximately O1X more repeatable than conventional pallet location methods. The design is evident in the fabrication and operation of the first automated machines for the connector assembly system. In automated machinery, kinematically coupled bodies are often subjected to ranges of disturbance forces. This thesis presents new methods for analyzing the static equilibrium, errors due to contact deformation, and contact stresses that result from disturbance forces. In addition, the manufacturing errors within individual pallets and machines combine to cause system-wide, variability in pallet location. Two methods are presented for estimating the system-wide variability in the position and orientation of the pallets.

Abstract:
This research explores the Automation Interface created by Beckhoff through introducinga compiler solution. Today machine builders have to be able to build machinesor plants in different sizes and provide many variations of the machine orplant types. Automatic code generation can be used in the aspect to reuse code thathas been tested and is configurable to match the desired functionality. Additionally, the use of a pre-existing API could potentially result in less engineering resourceswasted in developing automatic code generation. This thesis aims to evaluate theAutomation Interface (AI) tool created by Beckhoff. This is accomplished throughmeans of incorporating the API functions into a compiler solution. The solution isdesigned to export the information required through an XML-file to generate PLCapplications. The generated PLC-code will be in Structured Text. In order to createa functional PLC-application, the construction of software requirements and testcases are established. The solution is then validated by means of generating a dataloggerto illustrate the usage. The exploratory research revealed both the benefitsand cons of using AI to a compiler solution. The evaluation indicated that the AutomationInterface can reduce engineering effort to produce a compiler solution, butthe learning curve of understanding the underlying components that work with theAPI required a great deal of effort.

Abstract:
In this thesis, the aim was to create an automation platform for bridge design using knowledge-based engineering (KBE) concepts. More specifically, the focus was put on the ultimate limit state design of reinforced concrete bridge columns. Compared to other engineering industries like manufacturing, the construction in- dustry only has a limited degree of automation, even though technically feasible automation already exist. This thesis proposes an automation framework, which has been developed using the object-oriented programming (OOP) paradigm in python. The platform employs a general piece of geometric logic on which a section analysis module is based that can analyse the normal force and two bending moments around mutually orthogonal axes in a reinforced concrete section of a column. The geometric logic is constructed out of six OOP classes, that are able to define a reinforced concrete section, and out of a set of three more OOP classes, that define the material parameters. The section analysis tool is based on the computation of limit surfaces for reinforced concrete sections. From these limit surfaces, interaction diagrams have been derived by taking plane sections of the limit surface. The verification of the automation application has been done by comparing in- teraction diagrams from the literature with interaction diagrams produced by the automation application. The comparison showed that both results coincided, taking into account some simplifications. Additionally, the automation framework is thought to be suitable for fulfilling a data management role in the design process, which is worthwhile to further investigate upon. The automation application can be further improved by augmenting the existing analysis modules with modules for other reinforced concrete elements or other construction materials.

Zia, Muhammad Irfan, and Mora Felipe Cortés. "Automation of packing process." Thesis, University of Skövde, School of Technology and Society, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:his:diva-1251.

Abstract:

The design work that precedes the automation of a process is not an easy job. Each one of the variables and possible risks involved in process must be carefully considered before implement the final design as well the requirements in performance and cost. However automate a dangerous, inefficient or just uncomfortable task entails many benefits that make up for the long period of design process. A well automated line will benefit the production with quality, productivity and capacity among other profits. In this project the immediate objective is to automate the “SANDFLEX Hacksaw blades” packaging process in the plant that SNAEurope owns in Lidköping. Actually the packing is completely manual. One operator packs the blades into the boxes meanwhile one more operator loads and unloads the packing station with empty and full boxes respectively. The task is both, tiring and uncomfortable for the operators as well inefficient for the company since the production rate is limited.

Analyzing and observing carefully product and process, different theories and strategies to achieve the goal were developed. Three are the possible solutions to solve the problem, with different levels of automation and technologies. The robotic solution uses an articulated robot to perform all the tasks; the hybrid solution uses pneumatic devices to pack the blades and an articulated robot to support the station loading and unloading the boxes. Finally the pneumatic solution uses only pneumatic devices, which hold, open and close, push box and blades using airpower; a few sensors detect positions and states, since a PLC coordinates and controls all process. By means of discussing these solutions with the company’s engineers and workers, after a deep literature study and two test of performance, was it possible to select the most suitable solution to accomplish the packaging task. The pneumatic solution is cheap and simple, but at the same time robust and reliable. This design performs the packaging task efficiently and fast. And more important, the operator passes from pack manually the blades to monitor the process.

Abstract:
The research examines the difficulties relating to the construction of a computer model for the automation of the design and cost estimation practices in engineering. The research has been carried out in an industrial context and the work has included both theoretical and pragmatic issues relating to the modelling of expertise for the production of commercially useful software in the field of combustion system design. The difficulties relating to the capture of ill-defined knowledge and subjective human decision-making with 'traditional' programming languages is examined and a study undertaken regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques. A particular emphasis has been placed on decision-making under uncertainty. The work has resulted in the construction of a prototype expert system that can be used to produce design quotations relating to single burner gas-fired combustion systems. An important aspect of the decision-making characteristic of engineering design, and particularly for the cost estimating stages of a project, is the mannner in which engineers combine both cost and technical data in order to arrive at design solutions on the criterion 'value for money'. The formal mathematics of probability theory and confirmation theory provide tools for modelling expertise of this kind and the research has developed and examined two parallel systems. The first is based on the use of Bayes' theorem and the second makes use of ideas from both confirmation and fuzzy set theory. The general approach, developed within the research, of combining knowledge types relating to 'fitness for purpose' and 'cost' into ordinal measures of 'value' is fundamental to many areas of decision-making and has many applications. The research also addresses the use of rule-based methods for application domains where the knowledge is continually changing and the expertise of users is variable.

Memory compilers are useful in computer system design as they automate layout, netlists, and characterization of a memory. This thesis presents a multi-ported SRAM scheme for the open-source SRAM compiler OpenRAM. This multi-ported SRAM design has access ports configurable to read and write, write-only, or read-only and supports any number of ports in any combination. I designed layout automation for an array of these bit cells in a generic 45 nm process and fabricable 180nm SCMOS. I designed netlist automation for the entire memory system for any combination of ports. A functional test I've designed automates SPICE simulations on the top level netlist to verify any port configuration.

Abstract:
Delivering a fault-free software to the client requires exhaustive testing, which in today's ever-growing software systems, can be expensive and often impossible. Software fault prediction aims to improve software quality while reducing the testing effort by identifying fault-prone modules in the early stages of development process. However, software fault prediction activities are yet to be implemented in the daily work routine of practitioners as a result of a lack of automation of this process. This thesis presents an Eclipse plug-in as a fault prediction automation tool that can predict fault-prone modules using two prediction methods, Naive Bayes and Logistic Regression, while also reflecting on the performance of these prediction methods compared to each other. Evaluating the prediction methods on open source projects concluded that Logistic Regression performed better than Naive Bayes. As part of the prediction process, this thesis also reflects on the easiest metrics to automatically gather for fault prediction concluding that LOC, McCabe Complexity and CK suite metrics are the easiest to automatically gather.

Abstract:
Front loaders are used in many agricultural applications. They are used in daily tasks that are performed by operators. The operator uses multiple different front loader equipment carrying out tasks, which are more or less repetitive. A common thing between these tasks even though different equipment is used, is that the working cycle is similar. A working cycle consists of multiple sequences. One of them involves loader control for desired object handling. If that part of the working cycle could be automated it could reduce the workload and operator stress, which would increase an operator’s daily working capacity. The aim with the thesis is to research the possibility to automate a part of the front loader working cycle. The goal is to create a prototype that can be used to automate the loader control part of the working cycle. The prototype will be implemented on a front loader for testing of a working cycle. To achieve the aim and goal, work will include research about which sensor technology that is best suited for the prototype. It will also include tests to see if there is a difference in accuracy when using a cheap or an expensive sensor and if it is possible to automate a part of the front loader working cycle. A sensor analysis was made and the ultrasonic sensor technology was chosen for the prototype. One expensive prototype sensor and one cheap extra sensor for comparison testing were chosen. Software was written for the sensors and they were tested on a test bench. The prototype was implemented on a front loader for test of a working cycle. The prototype can measure distance and send the required commands based on that. This indicates that it is possible to automate a part of the front loader working cycle.

Abstract:
A review of automation, robotics and communications technology has established the need for the development of a communications infrastructure capable of supporting future underground hard rock mine automation systems. A series of underground experiments were undertaken at Copper Cliff North Mine to evaluate the design criteria and performance of several communications infrastructures. The work successfully demonstrated the capability of real-time operation of voice, data and stationary video communication as well as surface-to-underground tele-operation of a load-haul-dump machine. This was achieved with a communications system consisting of a broadband bus linked to leaky feeder coaxial cables by means of distributed antenna translators. The success of the trials permitted a strategy for mine automation to be devised. The economic benefits of mine automation were estimated by means of economic models developed for the mine. Projected benefits, evaluated in terms of mining cost reduction, throughput time and quality improvement, were concluded to be significant. As a result of the analysis, future research and development is concluded to be best targeted at improving ore grade, optimizing process productivity and maximizing machine utilization.

Abstract:

Building Automation System (BAS) was proposed to have the automatic centralized control of various appliances in the building such as heating, ventilating, air conditioning and other systems. Providing high security for the network layer in BAS was the major concern in recent times of studies. Researchers have been proposing different authentication protocols to stop the intruders from attacking the network, of which Time Efficient Stream Loss Authentication (TESLA) was the most secured protocol. Apart from its low computational and communicational overhead, there are few possible ways from which an intruder can attack a BAS network. Hence, to overcome this drawback we used a proposed algorithm in this paper, which uses the concept of Zero ? Knowledge Protocol (ZKP) in addition to TESLA for security. This combination of ZKP with time synchronization provides high authentication of packets in the network, thus making the network more secure and reliable. To test the security of the algorithm, we implement different wireless sensor network attacks such as sinkhole attack, and gray hole attack. Our proposed security algorithm is implemented by various WSN?s. We use Network Simulator 2 for simulation of the proposed algorithm. During the simulation, we observe detection of malicious nodes (intruders), thus proving the security of the proposed algorithm that in turn secures BAS.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to confirm a proof of concept on how to get a robot to pick up a plastic bag containing 3500 plastic caps, cut it open and pour the content, all within a restricted Clean room. The work was executed in an agile way with several ongoing iterative processes in parallel. In the present production line, refilling caps are done manually. For those working in the production line, this task entails heavy lifting and the concern of keeping an eye out for when to refill and how many caps there are in the production line all the time. The result is a working prototype of a robot tool, consisting of a combined clamp and vaccum bag gripper and a self standing linear unit with a blade mounted to it. When tested, this proved to be a functioning solution to the task in hand. The gripper is designed to be mounted on a six axis industrial robot and the blade is placed inside a robot cell. Simulations show that the task is easily done fast enough to supply 5 production lines, producing in full speed, with caps. Solely this unit will not contribute much to a production line if implemented in a factory, since it does not take material flow into consideration. It can merely be seen as a part of a bigger automation chain.

Rusu, Marius Florin. "Automation of railway switch and crossing inspection." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7348/.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years there has been an increase in railway usage which led to reduced time for rail maintenance. Railway switches and crossings (S&C) are an important asset and they typically account for 30% of the total budget spent on maintenance. The first part of this work researches the feasibility of automatically inspecting S&Cs in accordance with Network Rail inspection requirements and the likely necessary advancements. Current S&C inspection requirements, as well as current and developing inspection solutions, were analysed and categorised. This revealed the required technological advances and likely changes that the railway will have to adopt. The second part of the work researches the weakness of conventional S&C profile inspection practices used in industry. The work identified the main reasons that can lead to poor traditional inspection of the S&C profile, developed a novel, automatic method to carry out the profile measurements which eliminated human error and identified possible improvements in the area of S&C profile inspection. During this research, an inspection trolley was prototyped, field trials were carried out, and good results were obtained.

Pooley, Michael. "Computer automation of land evaluation procedures." Thesis, Aston University, 1989. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/14294/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was concerned with the computer automation of land evaluation. This is a broad subject with many issues to be resolved, so the study concentrated on three key problems: knowledge based programming; the integration of spatial information from remote sensing and other sources; and the inclusion of socio-economic information into the land evaluation analysis. Land evaluation and land use planning were considered in the context of overseas projects in the developing world. Knowledge based systems were found to provide significant advantages over conventional programming techniques for some aspects of the land evaluation process. Declarative languages, in particular Prolog, were ideally suited to integration of social information which changes with every situation. Rule-based expert system shells were also found to be suitable for this role, including knowledge acquisition at the interview stage. All the expert system shells examined suffered from very limited constraints to problem size, but new products now overcome this. Inductive expert system shells were useful as a guide to knowledge gaps and possible relationships, but the number of examples required was unrealistic for typical land use planning situations. The accuracy of classified satellite imagery was significantly enhanced by integrating spatial information on soil distribution for Thailand data. Estimates of the rice producing area were substantially improved (30% change in area) by the addition of soil information. Image processing work on Mozambique showed that satellite remote sensing was a useful tool in stratifying vegetation cover at provincial level to identify key development areas, but its full utility could not be realised on typical planning projects, without treatment as part of a complete spatial information system.

Abstract:

Home automation systems of today tend to be external solutions to an existing product that enable rather complex and expensive communications equipment to be attached to existing products. This is because it would not be economically defendable to implement the communications hardware internally in the products, due to a high increase of the cost for the product. This thesis tries to solve this problem by introducing a low-cost product-embedded solution for home automation. By using the Elvin protocol together with low-cost communication solutions, such as the RS232 protocol and Open/Closed circuits, communications could be embedded into products and device interaction could be implemented without increasing the cost of already existing products too much. Furthermore this thesis will discuss an implementation of an Elvin router that will act as a bridge between RS232, Open/Closed circuits and the Ethernet network that contains an Elvin server.

Abstract:
The present work is concerned with the advancement of the knowledge of structural optimization in engineering design while focusing on efficient and easy to use ways of setting-up the required automated processes as well as the problems arising from it. Three industry examples are considered. In the first example a software tool that serves as a hands-on decision guidance for many occurring design situations for structured wall PE pipes is developed. In order to avoid licensing fees only public domain software or in-house code are used. It offers the efficient and automated simulation of the ringstiffness test as well as the most common pipe installation scenarios. In addition, an optimization feature is implemented for the design of optimum pipe profiles with regards to the ringstiffness test. In the second example a framework for the optimum design of carbon fibre mountain bike frames is developed. An extensively parameterized and automated simulation model is created that allows for varying tube shapes, paths and laminate ply thicknesses as well as joint locations. For improved efficiency a decomposition approach has been employed that decomposes the original optimization problem into a size optimization sub problem and a shape optimization top level problem. The former is solved by the built-in optimization tool in OptiStruct and the latter by means of surrogate based optimization where each experiment in the DoE is a full size optimization. The third example is concerned with the optimum design of a blade for a novel vertical axis wind turbine. A design approach similar to those with horizontal axes is chosen. The altered design requirements are accounted for by creating a parameterized simulation model and performing size optimization runs for 32 models with different material settings and shear web locations where the model creation process has been automated.

Abstract:
Some companies have managed to gain an advantage in today’s increasingly competitive market by utilizing product configuration software. However, many companies in the industrial manufacturing industry offer systems of configurable products and wish to be able to configure the products both individually and together as a system. The project described in this thesis was carried out at Tacton Systems, a provider of sales and product configuration software. This project aims to contribute to the literature knowledge on system configuration by researching, through literature study and interviews, what types of systems companies want to be able to configure, and what relationships or interfaces are needed between the configurable modules forming the system. The result was that it is possible to look at each system in levels of abstraction. When looking at whole systems, the system structures can be split into two types, i.e., linear systems and central systems. Parameters need to be communicated between the modules in the system. The module interfaces defined in the Tactonmodel could carry enough information to establish the necessary relationships between the modules and thus make different parameter types irrelevant. Furthermore, this project investigates different aspects of how Computer AidedDesign (CAD) models for system configuration in Solid Works need to be structured to work in a robust way for design automation. Different functions were tried on a relatively simple model as a proof of concept. The main result is that the most robust way to do the mates between the configurable components is to assign them to reference geometry that is built into templates. This project focused on investigating the possibility for system configuration in the design automation environment, but it is necessary for Tacton to look at the future development in a holistic view.

This research examines the process and challenges associated with the addition of an autonomous transfer robot to a manufacturing line for AvCarb Material Solutions for use in production of pyrolytic graphite. Development of the system included the design and fabrication of an end-effector, selection of a SCA RA robotic arm, and incorporation of a vision system. The arm and the end-effector were tested to see if material would shift during transfer. The entire system was tested for repeatability and transfer time. The results of the test indicted that the transfer system would successfully meet specifications with high process capability given by a Cpk of 1.47.

Many in vivo neuroscience techniques are limited in terms of scale and suffer from inconsistencies because of the reliance on human operators for critical tasks. Ideally, automation would yield repeatable and reliable experimental procedures. Precision engineering would also allow us to perform more complex experiments by allowing us to take novel approaches to existing problems. Two such tasks that would see great improvement through automation and scalability are accessibility to the brain as well as neuronal activity imaging. In this thesis, I will describe the development of two novel tools that increase the precision, repeatability, and scale of in vivo neural experimentation. The first tool is a robot that automatically performs craniotomies in mice and other mammals by sending an electrical signal through a drill and measuring the voltage drop across the animal. A well-characterized increase in conductance occurs after skull breakthrough due to the lower impedance of the meninges compared to the bone of the skull. This robot allows us access to the brain without damaging the tissue, a critical step in many neuroscience experiments. The second tool is a new type of microscope that can capture high resolution three-dimensional volumes at the speed of the camera frame rate, with isotropic resolution. This microscope is novel in that it uses two orthogonal views of the sample to create a higher resolution image than is possible with just a single view. Increased resolution will potentially allow us to record neuronal activity that we would otherwise miss because of the inability to distinguish two nearby neurons.

Abstract:

Wireless broadcast communication systems are continuously facing many threats in terms of various security attacks on the network. Broadcast communication has well known advantages in large scale networks such as building automation system, home automation and more. The need for verification and authentication in the broadcast communication had motivated us to develop a unique security algorithm for a robust authentication mechanism. This project proposes a unique methodology that combines the advantage of the gradient based routing and cryptography in a network. For implementation of the proposed algorithm, an example of building automation has been used. Principles of TESLA protocol were considered, and modified to craft a novel approach that provides a highly secure broadcast authentication mechanism in the building automation system. Implementation and results produced during the development phase of the project affirms the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:
In the sequel of mobile game industry, testing is recognized as a key factor that can either boost or halt the game development. Indeed, the growth speed of mobile industry has led to decreasing quality in the apps and the employed testing tools. The wide spectrum of device hardware and software, so called fragmentation, makes it a lot slower to test the application on devices. Besides, there are more inherent technical issues to test games as compared to other mobile applications. The lack of efficient tools for testing robustness, quality and computational efficiency has been acknowledged by the game industry. This unmet need has motivated the work highlighted in this thesis which aims to explore easy and efficient approaches to generate test automation code for mobile games. First, to identify difficulties, challenges and good practices that mobile game developers face, a questionnaire-based analysis has been conducted and evaluated. Second, a new Android mobile game testing tool, called MAuto, has been developed and deployed. MAuto is developed to be compatible with Appium, open source test automation framework. MAuto is a tool that utilizes its user’s input to generate Appium test automation code which can be run on the same or any other Android device. The system consists of three elements: the user, the browser, and the mobile device. Once the user has launched MAuto, all the interaction between the user and the tool happens with the browser. During the rerun, MAuto utilizes AKAZE algorithm to recognize the location of the object and repeats the user input with Appium. Consequently, MAuto has been used in developing test automation code to play the tutorial scene of the mobile game Clash of Clans. MAuto is designed to be a friendly mobile test creator that, with minimal amendments, can be exported to other testing applications in alternative platforms, e.g. iOS. Nevertheless, the thesis also acknowledges the limitations in the image-recognition based test automation methods where the negative impact of change of configuration, lack of luminosity, and non-exhaustive list of models cannot be ignored. On the other hand, the thesis also reviews the existing tools and current practices in mobile game testing, providing a comparable analysis for both researchers and developer communities
Lisäksi peleissä on enemmän niille ominaisia teknisiä ongelmia verrattuna muihin mobiiliapplikaatioihin. MAutoa on käytetty esimerkiksi luomaan testiautomaatiokoodi, joka pelaa Clash of Clans -peliä.

As RFID technology proliferates within the industry, more added value applications employing RFID technology are being created. One main application is inventory tracking where RFID technology is used to create a visibility of goods flowing through the supply chain. This thesis discusses the high-level design considerations and implementation challenges of a mobile RFID system to aid inventory automation in an enclosed environment such as a warehouse. Multiple simulations, employing probabilistic-like algorithm for navigation decision, was also conducted to visualize the feasibility of the system. An autonomous vehicle carrying an RFID reader is also implemented to test hardware reliability and the feasibility of a grounded robot to perform inventory in a three dimensional space.

Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions (QWBS) provides communication equipment and services used to track trucking fleets and other capital assets via satellite. Order fulfillment and inventory management practices in QWBS were non-uniform and manually intensive. Buyers used their own intuition and rules-of-thumb to decide how many parts to order and how many parts should be held in stock to buffer against unexpected demand fluctuations. Non-uniform, manual inventory management practices resulted in higher inventory levels, lower customer service, and higher operational costs than can be achieved with uniform, formal management practices. This thesis describes the design and implementation of an automated inventory management system that optimizes inventory levels and alleviates manual effort. Benchmarking was used to show how a similar firm used inventory management techniques to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Quantitative analysis was used to develop an inventory management simulator that allowed alternative management strategies to be tested before implementing changes to the real system. Simulation results showed that QWBS inventories for fiscal year 2001 (FY01) could have been reduced by 40% had an automated inventory management policy been in place. In addition, automation would have reduced the manual effort of buyers by about 32%. Results from the simulator motivated the formation of the Automated Inventory Manager (AIM) project team. AIM is designed to automate order fulfillment and inventory management tasks and allow procurement's human resources to be redirected from low level transaction processing tasks to more value-added tasks. AIM is expected to liberate $700K in working capital and save approximately $240K per year in ongoing inventory and labor cost reductions, representing a 1-year ROI of 200%. However, AIM represents only the first step in a recommended cost reduction program to streamline the fulfillment of customer orders and reduce organizational redundancies.

Abstract:
Siemens Energy develops, manufactures, and provides service of products utilized for production of green energy. This thesis has been conducted at Siemens Energy in Finspång and the department of steam turbine design. A major part of the work at the department includes service and updates of operating steam turbines located all around the world. The tasks of updating and service are short and require quick answers as the plant is waiting to be started. In order to adapt to the rapid development time required, the department of steam turbine design has developed a CAD automation process for drawing production of steam turbine diaphragms. The automation process is developed in an older CAD system that the department long have relied on. This CAD software and thus the automation process will soon be retired and taken out of service since the company is switching to the modern CAD software NX. This thesis is aimed at investigating the current development process at the department and propose and develop a new CAD automation process in NX for steam turbine diaphragms. The work was initiated by performing an analysis of the current situation where the collection of data constituted a solid ground for the rest of the thesis. The data lay the basis for the creation of a design specification which later served as a starting point for both the search and development of solution proposals regarding CAD automation. During the concept generation, it became clear that the development process embodied the scope of concepts, a form of application programming interface to achieve design automation was considered evident. This implied a more area-focused concept generation leading up to multiple solution concepts. After the generated solutions had been sorted and ranked, the solution to proceed with was based on NX integrated tool Knowledge Fusion to achieve CAD automation in NX. The development of the automation process and associated models utilized theories such as the MOKA methodology, high level cad templates and on explicit reference modeling. Resulting in a CAD automation process with possibilities to deliver both CAD models and technical drawings within a timeframe that reduces development time. It was concluded that the developed CAD automation process and associated models assured quality and reliability of the CAD material produced. Furthermore, the developed solution fit in the existing diaphragm development process and showed potential to significantly reduce the development time of steam turbine diaphragms.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes an automated methodology for the design of complex multiple-mode hydromechanical transmissions. High fuel prices and strict emission regulations are today drivers of the development of new fuel-efficient drive transmissions for construction machinery. Hydromechanical transmissions have high energy efficiency and a wide torque/speed conversion range. They are today strong candidates to replace the fuel-thirsty torque converters conventionally used in heavy construction machines. The trend towards more complex transmission architectures increases the need for more sophisticated product development methods. Complex multiple-mode transmissions are difficult to design and prototype and can be realised in a great number of different architectures. This increases the need for reliable concept evaluation in early design stages. The design of the transmission is also strongly coupled to its energy consumption and for a fair comparison  between transmission concepts optimal designs are necessary. Design automation and optimisation with detailed simulation models can support the industrial engineer in the design task and increase the available knowledge early in the design process. The proposed methodology uses simulation-based optimisation to design the transmission for a specific vehicle application. Various aspects of the transmission’s characteristics may be targeted, although energy efficiency is in great focus in this work. To evaluate the energy efficiency, the transmission designs are simulated using backward-facing simulations with detailed power loss models. The methodology is applicable for designing the drive transmissions of construction machines and other mobile working vehicles such as agricultural machines, forest machines and mobile mining equipment.

Abstract:
Product development is continually becoming more challenging as global competition requires more efficient design methods. The reuse of company knowledge, specifically the design rationale that occurs during projects is essential to success. This thesis presents a method for integrating engineering and communication tools for purposes of automating the capture of communication-based design rationale. The method is based on four basic principles: to integrate, to make data retrievable, to minimize user interaction, and to store as much DR as possible. The core method consists of two primary operations, the first being to capture the design rationale, and the second being to provide for effective retrieval. An implementation of this method that uses NX as the engineering tool and Skype VoIP software as the communication tool was created for the purpose of testing integration as a means of DR capture. The implementation was evaluated using four separate tests, which focus on efficiency of capture and retrieval, cost analysis, and user satisfaction. These results show that the tool provides improvement in each of the tested categories. From this testing I conclude that integrating communication and engineering tools is an excellent way to capture communication-based design rationale. The tool presented is more efficient than traditional methods in the test cases and provides a user-friendly solution to DR capture. This tool also has various other important applications, such as global collaboration and expectation management. It also provides an excellent framework for upcoming multi-user CAx tools.
