Full textNowadays, the vehicles are equipped with various driver assistance systems. However, some problems may arise when using them. Considering the user's real need and personal style from the design stage should reduce the occurrence of these problems. The proposed method of design and evaluation of advanced driver assistance systems aims at providing some solutions to the problems mentioned above. Its main points are the contextual analysis of the driving task, the definition of the Human-Machine cooperation modes, and the use of a driver model. This method was applied in an incremental way to the design of an auto-adaptive longitudinal-direction driver-assistance system by means of three experimental studies carried out using a driving simulator: without driving assistance system, with a conventional driving assistance system and with an auto-adaptive one. The method, including in each stage driving performance and interviews analyses, enabled on the one hand to define the auto-adaptability criteria and on the other hand to design and assess an auto-adaptive system

Full textThis thesis investigates the use and performance of augmented perception (Cooperative Systems) for assessment of raod risk. We provide a discussion on intervehicular communications (IVC) limitations and performance model built to incorporate them, created from empirical data collected on the tracks. Our results are more pessimistic than existing literature, suggesting IVC limitations have been underestimated. Then, we develop a CS/Augmented perception simulation architecture. This architecture is used to obtain news results on the safety benefits of a cooperative safety application. At the first, we confirm earlier results in terms of crashes numbers decrease, but raise doubts on benefits in etrms of crashes' severity. Then, augmented and single-vehicule perceptions are compared in a reference driving scenarion for risk assessment. Our results show that augmented perception performance, although this might be valid only for our specific scenario. Eventually, we propose a new approach using augmented perception to identify road risk through a surrogate: near-miss events

Full textWith the apparition of thin-section computed tomography (CT), the availability of high-resolution near isotropic data made possible the evaluation of obstructive airway diseases along any orientation throughout the data. Thin-sections CT allow for a more specific and clinically relevant definition of the bronchial pathological changes, permitting an easier monitoring of disease extent and severity. Consequently, CT scoring systems were soon established for global assessment of airway diseases, with a global score assigned from patients' thin section CT images, and based on the presence of airway abnormalities such as peribronchial thickening, bronchiectasis, mucus foci etc. However, the clinical evaluation of airways is typically limited to radiologist's subjective visual inspection only: systematic evaluation of the airways to take advantage of high-resolution data has not proved practical without automation. The main goal of this thesis resides in developing fast and reliable algorithms to automatically locate and assess the severity and extent of airway abnormalities and, therefore, provide a significant aid to diagnosis. This involves steps such as bronchial tree extraction, airway quantitative analyses and definition of parameters for airway scoring. These approaches were tested and validated on phantom data as well as a wide variety of human airway data. Airway quantitative analyses were furthermore verified against manual measurements from independent operators to validate their accuracy and demonstrate their clinical usefulness. Lastly, global airway scores, computed from local airway observations, are compared to those of radiologists. The set of tools developed in this thesis are regrouped to provide a clinically useful application that evaluates se verity and extent of obstructive airway diseases
