Full textPersonal transportation has a large and increasing impact on people, society, and the environment globally. Computational energy-use simulation is becoming a key tool for automotive research and development in designing efficient, sustainable, and consumer acceptable personal transportation systems. Historically, research in personal transportation system design has not been held to the same standards as other scientific fields in that classical experimental design concepts have not been followed in practice. Instead, transportation researchers have built their analyses around available automotive simulation tools, but conventional automotive simulation tools are not well-equipped to answer system-level questions regarding transportation system design, environmental impacts, and policy analysis.
The proposed work in this dissertation aims to provide a means for applying more relevant simulation and analysis tools to these system-level research questions. First, I describe the objectives and requirements of vehicle energy-use simulation and design research, and the tools that have been used to execute this research. Next this dissertation develops a toolset for constructing system-level design studies with structured investigations and defensible hypothesis testing. The roles of experimental design, optimization, concept of operations, decision support, and uncertainty are defined for the application of automotive energy simulation and system design studies.
The results of this work are a suite of computational design and analysis tools that can serve to hold automotive research to the same standard as other scientific fields while providing the tools necessary to complete defensible and objective design studies.

In the automobile manufacturing industry, vehicle production is an assembly-line process. Automobile companies typically sequence vehicle production based on workload balancing factors, with little consideration of vehicle colors. The resulting sequence usually has a small average paint block size. Because automobile manufacturers use expensive and sometimes pollutant chemicals to clean out old paint at each color change, they would like to increase the size of the paint blocks, while maintaining the original workload-balanced vehicle sequence. To achieve this goal, Ford and other automobile manufacturers are considering automated vehicle storage and retrieval systems that would allow them to perturb the original sequence around the vehicle painting station, creating larger paint blocks and then restoring the original sequence after painting. To evaluate these systems, it is necessary to develop a method for re sequencing cars and for calculating the resulting savings in paint cleanings. The problem of resequencing can be cast as a traveling salesman problem with time windows. For a real-life sequence size of 750 cars and windows of 75 slots per car in either direction, direct modeling using the strongest known ... formulation yields an integer program with up to 200,000 constraints and 14,000,000 variables. Reduced formulations. We exploit special problem structure to solve the LP relaxation of this problem quickly using Lagrangean relaxation. We prove and use an order-within-color property to construct an enumerative formulation, and use a greedy approach to bound the LP optimum. We decompose the problem and solve smaller enumerative formulations sequentially to generate a heuristic solution that empirically is within 2.5% of optimality. Because our heuristic and bounding procedure runs in a total of one minute, an automobile manufacturer could use the process to adjust the resequencing process in real time to compensate for vehicles that have been delayed in the original sequence due to production defects or other disruptions. We also establish worst-case bounds ranging from 2.5 to 6 for another related heuristic.

"Decision making in inter‐corporate projects : A qualitative and quantitative study of project workers in automobile research and pre‐ development projects in Japan and Germany." Full textThis thesis is dealing with the integration of Japanese and German project workers in automobile inter‐corporate research/pre‐development projects. The focus is on better understanding the respective decision making process. As cultural differences play a big role in the way that people behave an extra focus was put on investigating this. The methods chosen for this study were quantitative research in the form of a questionnaire and qualitative research in the form of an interview series.
For the quantitative research, literature in the cross‐cultural field was studied and from different cultural dimensions suggested by various authors, a synthesis was derived. This was then used as the base for a questionnaire. The data both enabled a quantitative research study and supported the qualitative study. A number of questions with a more straightforward approach to decision making in projects were also a part of the questionnaire. The data was processed using the statistical software SPSS and the results were analyzed using factor analysis and ANOVA.
The factor analysis of the quantitative data had only one factor which had a significant difference between the German and the Japanese sample. The dimension was called individuality reward and describes to which degree a society reward competent group behavior versus competent individual behavior. The German sample showed a strong tendency towards favoring competent individual behavior whereas the Japanese sample leaned towards favoring competent group behavior.
The questionnaire questions directly linked to decision making showed no significant differences between the samples showing that individual attitudes within the German and Japanese sample varies more than the cultural differences between the two groups. This shows that you cannot expect a Japanese or German person to act in a certain way in a certain decision making situation just judging on their cultural background.
In order to get a deep understanding of the decision making process a qualitative series of interviews were conducted. All interviews with Japanese and other people on location in Japan were conducted in‐person at different locations around the Tokyo area. Interviews with people situated in Europe were made over the phone. The interviews were recorded and later transcribed and interpreted to gain a thorough understanding of the decision making process.
From the qualitative material several differences in how German and Japanese people work and make decisions were found. More time is put into sharing information and getting consensus before a decision in Japan than in Germany were discussions and arguing in meetings are more tolerated. The reason for this behavior in Japan is to not lose face and as well as making it possible to make a decision fast once brought up in a meeting. Germans remain more flexible to revisions after a decision has been made because of the shorter preparation phase.
There is big overlap of members between different inter‐corporate research projects in the automobile industry. Japanese project members tends to be older than their German counterparts which makes them more stable as younger people might disappear from a project as they move up the corporate ladder. In Japan there is a greater emphasis put into after‐work activities compared to Germany where it is seen as beneficial but not as often used as a way to gain a personal relationship.
The thesis concludes that by relatively small measures common decision making between Japanese and German project workers can become smooth and with few misunderstandings. Introductions to respective cultures as well as keeping an open mindset and non assertive attitude should help avoid some of the worst case scenarios. A kick‐off in the beginning of a project in order to build a personal relationship and trust would surely help the project come off to a good start. Setting common goals for the project and confirming data with people involved in a decision process will facilitate common consensus decision making. Also confirming decisions as simply as paraphrasing what has been said or by informal one‐on‐one discussions in a break or after a meeting can keep misunderstandings due to the language barrier to a minimum.

Full textThe Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking System (PAEB) can utilize on-board sensors to detect pedestrians and take safety related actions. However, PAEB system only benefits the individual vehicle and the pedestrians detected by its PAEB. Additionally, due to the range limitations of PAEB sensors and speed limitations of sensory data processing, PAEB system often cannot detect or do not have sufficient time to respond to a potential crash with pedestrians. For further improving pedestrian safety, we proposed the idea for integrating the complimentary capabilities of V2V and PAEB (V2V-PAEB), which allows the vehicles to share the information of pedestrians detected by PAEB system in the V2V network. So a V2V-PAEB enabled vehicle uses not only its on-board sensors of the PAEB system, but also the received V2V messages from other vehicles to detect potential collisions with pedestrians and make better safety related decisions. In this thesis, we discussed the architecture and the information processing stages of the V2V-PAEB system. In addition, a comprehensive Matlab/Simulink based simulation model of the V2V-PAEB system is also developed in PreScan simulation environment. The simulation result shows that this simulation model works properly and the V2V-PAEB system can improve pedestrian safety significantly.
Ramesh, Keerthanaa. "MODELING AND SIMULATION OF AN AUTOMATED PARALLEL PARKING SYSTEM USING HYBRID PETRI NETS." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/9746.
Full textIn recent years, there have been a lot of technology innovations to automate the day to day processes done by every person. These days the automobile manufacturers introduce new features in their cars, in order to improve customer experience, like Adaptive cruise control, Parallel park assist, etc. The objective of this thesis is to model an automated parallel parking system and to simulate the system behavior, by taking into account the high level events which happen when a car is parallel parked. The tool used in this thesis to model and simulate the system is Hybrid Petri net (HPN), which is versatile to model the real life systems. Chapter 1 deals with a brief introduction of the related work in Hybrid Petri net modeling of real life systems, automatic parallel parking systems and how the concept for modeling the parallel parking system was developed. Chapter 2 deals with the general introduction about Discrete, Continuous and Hybrid Petri nets and their dynamics which are essential for understanding this thesis. Chapter 3 deals with the development of the model and the various stages in the model development. Errors encountered in each stage is briefly discussed and the improvements are discussed in the next stage of development. This chapter concludes with the final integrated model and operation of the model. Chapter 4 deals with the discussion of results obtained when the model is tested in MATLAB and SIMHPN (which is a Matlab embedded simulation program). The results are compared, the system behavior is observed and the purpose of the thesis is justified. In Chapter 5, a conclusion is provided to summarize the entire thesis.

Full textThere is a strong urge for advanced diagnosis method, especially in high power battery packs and high energy density cell design applications, such as electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid electric vehicle segment, due to safety concerns. Accurate and robust diagnosis methods are required in order to optimize battery charge utilization and improve EV range. Battery faults cause significant model parameter variation affecting battery internal states and output. This work is focused on developing diagnosis method to reliably detect various faults inside lithium-ion cell using electrochemical model based observer and fuzzy logic algorithm, which is implementable in real-time. The internal states and outputs from battery plant model were compared against those from the electrochemical model based observer to generate the residuals. These residuals and states were further used in a fuzzy logic based residual evaluation algorithm in order to detect the battery faults. Simulation results show that the proposed methodology is able to detect various fault types including overcharge, over-discharge and aged battery quickly and reliably, thus providing an effective and accurate way of diagnosing li-ion battery faults.
