Full textIn order to accelerate product flow, reduce inventory levels and make economies in transportation, companies in almost all industries have set up cross-dock centres. These centres are an intermediate point of consolidation in a supply chain. Car manufacturers Renault and Nissan rely on an international network of crossdock platforms to link suppliers of OEM parts with overseas production plants. In a framework of an academic-industrial partnership between the LIMOS laboratory and Renault, this thesis focuses on the activity planning and scheduling at these crossdock centres.Field studies conducted at Renault and Nissan allowed us to identify the characteristics, constraints and cost drivers of crossdock platforms, as well as to target our review of the literature. Based on this, we propose a sequential optimization approach, comprising two integer linear programming models, implemented in CPLEX and tested on industrial data of two Renault platforms. Numerical experiments’ results obtained on the first model (planning) showed a significant improvement in cost, compared to the Renault method. In light of this results, an industrial implementation was made, with such convincing results. The second model (scheduling) proved to be relevant for medium-sized instances. The proposed approach fits to the current configuration of AILN Renault and we consider that it is adaptable to other industries

Full textThe constant evolution of oil prices and the more and more stringent automotive emission standards force the original engine manufacturers to search for innovative solutions in order to reduce oil consumption. As an important part of the energy contained in the primary carrier (the fuel) is lost to the ambient through heat, it seems convenient to recover a part of this thermal energy and to turn it into fuel consumption reduction. Thermodynamic bottoming cycle such as the Rankine cycle could be used to meet this objective. Its popular use throughout the world for electricity generation makes it a natural candidate for on-board implementation in vehicles. However, a certain number of hurdles are still present before the system can be efficiently applied to heavy-duty trucks. In the last thirty years, numerous studies heave been carried out to evaluate the real potential of that kind of system on a vehicle but nothing has yet been commercialized. The heat sources to recover from, the constraints relative to the on-board application and the long and frequent transient behavior of the vehicle mean both the system architecture and its control strategy need to be optimized. The system optimization leads to a choice in terms of working fluid, heat sources and sinks, and components sizing in order to maximize power recovery and hence the fuel saving. The control plays a major role by using the capability of such a system to ensure an efficient and safe operation and limiting the interactions with the other vehicle sub-systems. In this thesis, a system design methodology is introduced to optimize the system architecture using complete model-based vehicle simulation. The constraints relative to the mobile application are taken into consideration to evaluate the potential of such a system. Modelbased control strategies for on controlled variable, namely the superheat level, are developed. Constrained by the implementation platform, different control frameworks ranging from PID to model predictive controllers or observer based controllers are developed to fit into a normal automotive electronic control unit. Most of these novel strategies were experimentally validated on a test rig developed during the thesis

Full textDriving a truck is a complex professional activity that takes place in a dynamic and constant changing environment. It needs a specific learning and it is set in a strict regulated framework including French labour code (Code du travail) as road regulation. Strong spatio-temporal pressure should be added to those characteristics. These constraints entail to drivers the use of operative strategies to achieve the main objective of their activity: respect of delivery time in optimal conditions of safety, security and productivity. This thesis deals with the contribution of cognitive psychology to the design of driving assistance systems for trucks. Works are intended to integrate, from the design of new systems, the demands of human cognitive functioning in real situation and the needs and expectations of drivers so that adapted and usable technological solutions could be proposed to them.Applied part shows two major dimensions of truck driving activity: productivity through the issue of the eco-driving assistance (“Conduite Economique Assistée, ADEME- RENAULT TRUCKS” project) and safety through the issue of the assistance to detection and protection of vulnerable road users (“VIVRE2, ANR-PREDIT05-LUTB” project). From a scientific point of view, the thesis ends with a proposal of a model of human functioning in finalized activities, of which is added an adapted model of the truck driving activity. The analysis performed in real environment enhance knowledge, on the one hand, on the applied driving strategies to the eco-driving of a truck in extra-urban environment and, on the other hand, on the components of the activity of drivers doing deliveries in urban environment. Moreover, works performed in VIVRE2 project allowed to specify representations and risky behaviours of vulnerable users with relation to trucks in town. From an applicative and ergonomic point of view, works on driving dynamic simulator allowed the evaluation of an innovative man-machine interface which could be adapted to eco-driving and the proposal as well as the evaluation of assistance systems to guarantee safety of vulnerable users during low speed manoeuvres in urban environment

Full textThe increasing complexity of engine cooling systems results in added interactions and disturbances to the performance. Besides, non-propulsion loads (fan, water pump…) draw a significant percentage of the engine’s power thus lowering the vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Recent studies have shown that by controlling components the efficiency can be improved by adjusting fan speed according to cooling needs, coolant flow, and oil flow. Currently, the Volvo group in order to optimize the performance of their truck’s cooling systems had installed new thermal management components. However, problems were found while testing control strategies and a better understanding of the interaction between components is required to prevent this from happening again. In this work, the bond graph approach has been applied for the study of the cooling system of a Heavy duty vehicle and has enabled subsystem interactions to be identified. Based on a simplified model issued from the bond graph, several control strategies have been built. These controllers are based on different control approaches: model predictive control, flatness control, model free control and model free control with reduced order model. These controllers were implemented in a simulation platform in the Matlab/Simulink environment. Results of the implementation of the new advanced control strategies are given. Fuel economy gains ranged between 0.5 and 0.9 %. A structural analysis of the current architecture is also proposed aiming at the optimization of the system. Given the insights from the analysis, an assessment of new concepts for the cooling system architecture is proposed

Full textIn the economic and social development of any country, an effective road transportation system is an important factor However, it also consumes a large proportion of the total infrastructure costs, while the costs borne by the road user for vehicle operation and depreciation arc even greater. A policy must therefore be adopted in which total community costs for any road link Of network are minimized. To do this meaningfully, alternatives must be developed and compared and the trade-offs between them carefully assessed. This, in turn, requires the ability to quantify the different cost functions for the desired period of analysis. [No abstract provided. Information taken from introduction]

The trunk lid panel is always a challenge to the production engineer due to the lack of design criteria in the formability estimation that leads to prolongation of lead time in contour modeling. In the present study, a complete finite element simulation model was constructed to analyze the formability of a trunk lid, the simulation parameters being used to examine an existing empirical formula the might be helpful in contour design. PAM_STAMP, a finite-element-method software, is the major tool used in this study. The forming mechanism and production conditions were confirmed in the beginning. Then, the contour design limit analysis and experiential design criteria examination were performed with the use of the above results. The parameters required in the software such as material flow stress, friction coefficient and the forming-limit-diagram, the fracture estimation of the simulation results, were obtained from experiments. In addition, draw-bead design on blank-holder is also very important to addendum-blank arrangement in a stamping process. In order to save the simulation time spending with correct results but without element piercing, the effective and actual draw-bead model simulation results are compared to obtain the optimum modeling method. The effective draw-bead model is found to be operative to obtain the object mentioned above. The result of the study on effective draw-bead was then used in the examination of the panel contour design.
