This article analyzes aspects of the distribution of West Flemish verbs in terms of Kayne's (1994) antisymmetry approach. The distribution of the auxiliary in the Infinitivus pro Participio (IPP) construction provides evidence for three functional heads in the lower middle field: Neg, T, and F2. The word order in the IPP construction is derived by head movement of the auxiliary and XP-movement of the IPP complement. The IPP complement moves to [Spec, FP2] to check its formal features; the finite auxiliary moves either to F2 or to a higher functional head, T or Neg; the nonfinite auxiliary rema

Abstract:
English-speaking preschoolers occasionally produce negative questions with a ‘doubled’ auxiliary (e.g. Why did you didn’t know?). These 2AuxQs apparently involve a failure to raise [NEG n’t] to C (cf. Why didn’t you know?). I analyze 2AuxQs as the product of two independent errors: a planning error (raising T-to-C without raising Neg-to-T first) and an allomorphy error (overgeneralization of ‑n’t). The planning error results from lack of practice: serial head-movement is relatively uncommon in English, and true Neg-to-T-to-C may be rarer than appearances suggest. In e.g. Why don’t we play, ok?

We generalize the process of lemmatization of verbs to their compound tenses. Usually, lemmatization is limited on verbs conjugated by means of suffixes; tense auxiliaries and modal verbs (e.g. I have left, I am leaving, I could leave) are ignored. We have constructed a set of 83 finite-state grammars which parse auxiliary verbs and thus recognizes the ‘head verb’, that is, the lemma. We generalize the notion of auxiliary verb to verbs with sentential complements which have transformed constructions (e.g. I want to go) that can be parsed in exactly the same way as tense auxiliaries or modal ve

ABSTRACT A clump moving through the intracluster medium of a galaxy cluster can drive a bow shock trailed by a bullet-like core. In some cases, such as in the prototypical Bullet cluster, X-rays show a gas bullet with a protruding head and pronounced shoulders. We point out that these features, while difficult to explain without dark matter (DM), naturally arise as the head of the slowed-down gas is gravitationally pulled forward toward its unhindered DM counterpart. X-ray imaging thus provides a unique, robust probe of the offset, collisionless DM, even without gravitational lensing or other

Uyghur grammars and linguistic works have traditionally described the -ip morpheme as a suffix that derives adverbs from verbs (Tömür 2003, Tohti 2012). This paper uses structural diagnostics involving passive morphology, single negation and NPI licensing to argue that -ip is a functional head with multiple syntactically distinct roles in different structures. The distinct properties of these structures, according to the types of verbs that are linked by -ip, provide evidence against a uniform derivational process of adverb formation. In some case -ip allows for adjunction of a TP-sized consti

Abstract Head-final languages are not expected to display verbal prefixes. However, in Tigrinya—a consistent SOV Ethio-Semitic language—the “relative marker” is a prefix that precedes the subordinate verb. Taking an antisymmetric and LCA approach to head-finality, I challenge the idea that what have been traditionally called prefixes in head-final languages have an intrinsic “prefixal morphological property”. Instead, I argue that prefixes are elements that are subject to specific syntactic constraints that result in them appearing in front of verbs. I therefore propose a new syntactic analysi

In this work, a solution for a continuous driver gaze zone estimation system in real-world driving situations is proposed, combining multi-zone ICP-based head pose tracking and appearance-based gaze estimation. Urban image semantic segmentation faces challenges including the coexistence of multi-scale objects, blurred semantic relationships between complex structures, and dynamic occlusion interference. Existing methods often struggle to balance global contextual understanding of large scenes and fine-grained details of small objects due to insufficient granularity in multi-scale feature extraction and rigid fusion strategies. To address these issues, this paper proposes an Adaptive Multi-scale Feature Fusion Network (AMFFNet). The network primarily consists of four modules: a Multi-scale Feature Ext
