Abstract:
This thesis aims to discuss the anxiety and defense mechanism of three main characters of the superhero movies, namely, Marvel’s The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The three main characters discussed have the capabilities to save the world. Yet, despite their capabilities as superheroes, they have their own weaknesses, just like human beings. In my analysis, I investigate the weaknesses of the main characters, namely, Captain America, Ironman, and Thor. Using Cramer’s concept of anxiety and defense mechanism (1991, 2009, 2016), I find that their weaknesses triggers anxiety. In return, t

This article will examine the potential reasons for this, whilst establishing ideological parity between the films.

Engaging communication of complex scientific concepts with the general public requires more than simplification. Compelling, relevant, and timely points of linkage between scientific concepts and the experiences and interests of the general public are needed. Pop-culture icons such as superheroes can represent excellent opportunities for exploring scientific concepts in a mental “landscape” that is comfortable and familiar. Abstract Unlike most poems of the Augustan age, Ovid’s Fasti is unusually fond of recording Roman defeats and moments of national humiliation. From the complete thrashing of the Fabii in the battle of the Cremera to Crassus’ disaster at Carrhae, Ovid’s poetic calendar offers an intriguing, ‘alternative’, view of Roman history. This chapter offers a fresh consideration of these and other related episodes, and argues that the recurrence to humiliation and revenge in the Fasti amounts to a persistent attempt by Ovid to assert that the need to avenge humiliation is hardwired into Rome’s DNA.
