Abstract:
In order to reach international climate goals, global carbon emissions must be halved by 2030. In flight-intensive organisations, where air travel makes up a significant portion of the organisation’s total annual carbon emissions, there is therefore often an ambition to reduce employee flight travel. The research project FLIGHT at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) explores tools that are designed to help organisations reduce their flight-related carbon emissions. On behalf of FLIGHT, students at KTH have developed a tool called FlightViz, which combines and visualises information about travels by flight, made by KTH employees. This study aims to investigate how FlightViz can be developed further, in order to be useful to a larger group of users, other than the originally intended user base - the researchers in the FLIGHT project. The research question asked is what features should be included and what design changes should be implemented in order to make FlightViz useful for a wider group of users at KTH. Research interviews with sustainability strategists at KTH Sustainability Office and with employees from different schools at KTH were conducted, with the aim of identifying user needs and creating a basis for answering the research question. The results of the study indicated that a number of features and design alterations are desirable in order to make FlightViz usable for a broader user base. Visualising personalised data per annual workforce, per year and in relation to various averages was found to be of high importance in the further development of FlightViz. Whether the data should be anonymous or not, was a question with a less obvious answer. Nevertheless, anonymity was an important topic in the study.

Quan, Chuanwen. "Integrated Modeling of Air Traffic, Aviation Weather, and Communication Systems." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27629.

Abstract:
Aviation suffers many delays due to the lack of timely air traffic flow management. These delays are also caused by the uncertainty weather information; and the lack of efficient dissemination of weather products to pilots. It is clear that better models are needed to quantify air traffic flow in three flight regions - en-route, in the terminal, and on the ground, to determine aviation weather information requirements at each region, and to quantify their bandwidth requirements. Furthermore, the results from those models can be used to select alternative future aviation communication systems. In this research, the 'ITHINK' and 'MATLAB' software packages have been used to develop a lumped Air Traffic Flow Model (ATFM) and an Aviation Weather Information and Bandwidth Requirements Model (AWINBRM). The ATFM model is used to quantify the volume of air traffic in each phase of flight in three flight regions. This model can be used to study navigation, surveillance, and communication requirements. The AWINBRM model is used to study aviation weather information requirements in different flight phases of flight. Existing and potential communication systems used for transmitting aviation weather information are explored in this research. Finally, a usable and practical computer model - Aircraft Impacted and Detour Model (AIDM) around an aviation weather system is developed. This model is used to compare the costs between detoured flights around a weather system and delayed flights at the airports. The purpose of this research is to study air traffic flow and aviation weather information and bandwidth requirements through modeling. The ultimate goal of the models described here is to serve as a living laboratory where policies can be tried before implementing them into the real system. Moreover, these computer models can evolve dynamically through time allowing decision makers to exercise policies at various points in time to quantify results with ease. This research would be a first integrated model for combing air traffic flow and aviation weather requirements and determining the quantity of aviation weather information between pilot and ground service centers. This research would be a guideline for aviation industry to build an efficient and timely aviation weather information transmission system with minimum budget. Consequently, this research will reduce aviation delays and improve aviation safety.

Abstract:

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A lack of English proficiency and failure to use standard phraseology played a role in two of the world’s largest aviation disasters in South Germany and Tenerife, respectively. As a result, the crucial role of effective pilot-ATC (air traffic controller) communication came under scrutiny and measures were put in place to ensure that aviation safety is not jeopardised by language-related problems. For example, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) implemented English language proficiency standards and testing. The study reported in this thesis investigated the use of Aviation English and standard phraseology, which is used in radiotelephony communication by the operational aviation community. Aviation English consists of a range of operationally-relevant language functions and dialogue management, e.g. orders, requests, and offers to act; a blend of formulaic standard phraseology and plain or everyday speech if and when a non-routine situation occurs. Data on pilots’ and ATCs’ perceptions of the role of language in air traffic communication, their perspectives on English as lingua franca in aviation, and English language proficiency standards and testing were collected by means of a questionnaire. The respondents included full-time professional pilots (domestic and international flights), part-time professional pilots and pilots who fly for leisure, and ATCs in Air Traffic Navigation Service units that handle domestic and/or international flights. Recordings of on-site air traffic communication from two airport towers were obtained and were used to study the use of Aviation English and standard phraseology in pilot-ATC communication in South Africa. The results indicated that the majority of pilots and ATCs believe that language-related problems can cause fatal accidents and serious incidents. Pilots and ATCs in South Africa do experience threatening and potentially hazardous situations as a result of communication problems, however, they are confident that communication problems are resolved quickly and successfully in order to avoid accidents. The analysis of the voice recordings correlated with the pilots’ and ATCs’ perceptions that in spite of communication problems (languagerelated and non-language-related) occurring in South African airspace, pilots and ATCs have strategies in place to resolve them effectively and they are also able to use plain English to negotiate understanding and meaning. The majority of the respondents indicated that they agree that English should be used as the lingua franca in aviation around the world and they regard the English language proficiency of South African pilots and ATCs as satisfactory. The majority support ICAO’s English language proficiency standards and testing. The recordings presented a small percentage of transmissions with read-back/hear-back errors, but a substantial number of instances of radio distortions and background noise which interfered with the intelligibility of the transmissions, correlated with the results of the questionnaire. A small percentage of transmissions contained deviations from Aviation English and standard phraseology and/or the use of plain English. The researcher is of the opinion that this initial investigation into Aviation English serves to indicate some avenues for fruitful linguistic investigations into Aviation English and pilot-ATC communication in South Africa.

Abstract:
As the state of the climate becomes increasingly severe, a multitude of goals are being formed in order to tackle the problem. At KTH Royal Institute of Technology, goals to lower emissions from work related air travel have been set. The next step in order to realize these goals would be to implement measures and tools to promote behavioural changes within the university. In this paper, the questions of “How can an installation be used to visualize flight data?” and “How can such an installation be designed in order to provoke reflection and discussion?” are explored through the method of Research through Design. The design was based on earlier research on how design elements of HCI can be effective in evoking certain emotions in the user. The outcome was a prototype of a visual carbon emission budget tool that would display, if developed further, in real time the extent of the average emissions from air travel per employee in a certain department at KTH and how that figure corresponds with the emission goals of the university. Interviewees that saw the tool in its developing stages stated that it evoked reflection and discussion, and that it had potential in sparking discussion on the flight habits within KTH departments if it would be used in a real environment in the future.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the legal problems arising from the introduction of satellite based communication, navigation and surveillance systems for civil aviation. The technical innovations are asking for an international institutional implementation, which has not yet started.
After a brief look at the technical aspects of the new systems (Chapter II), existing institutional arrangements of international satellite systems, air-navigation infrastructure and air traffic control are outlined (Chapter III). A legal analysis presents the obstacles and alternatives future institutional arrangements will be confronted with, and leads to a definition of the institutional problem (Chapter IV).
The core of the thesis is a proposal for regional intergovernmental organizations, which coordinate the operation of aeronautical satellite communications and air traffic control as an intermediary between the States and service providers (Chapter V). Among other problems financing, user charges, and liability are discussed. Legal problems of navigation systems are discussed on the base of the emerging global systems (Chapter VI).

Crew communication and crew resource management are readily recognized as critical to safety of flight. With the inclusion of a greater number of female pilots in a traditionally male crew environment, it is imperative to investigate how gender characteristics impact crew communication. This study was a meta-review of existing literature. There have been a number of studies that examined differences in masculine versus feminine communication characteristics in general.

Abstract:
Structural change in organisations is stressful for staff and the managers who must implement it. Most change programs use employee communication techniques to support change directions set by senior executive decision makers-dominant coalitions. This research used a single case study to explain the context and management discourses of a major re-structure of an Australian Federal Government agency, the former Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), during the early 1990s. A content analysis examined the use of keywords in management discourses that argued the need for change. The keywords represented the two major change discourses: micro-economic reform and aviation safety regulation. A critical discourse analysis investigated the dominant coalition's discourse strategies to justify change. Content and process communication theories, and the role of framing in organisational change, were used to explain how employees may have reacted to change directions. The research found that change directions were framed as an economic imperative that clashed with a traditional organisational culture that emphasised the primacy of aviation safety. It found that mixed messages by the two principal members of the dominant coalition who drove change exacerbated the clash. The results suggest a need for further analysis of management discourses used to inform employees about structural change, especially in organisations that have legislative responsibilities. Further analysis of change messages framed by dominant coalitions could lead to a deeper understanding ofhow they affect employees and the change process.

Abstract:
In today’s globalized world, air travel is one of the fastest growing markets. Millions of aircrafts take off and then touch down all around the world each day. This well-synchronized symphony, however, is much more complex than it seems, and communication – language - plays a crucial role during a plane’s journey. Misunderstandings and miscommunications can have disastrous effects, so the adoption of a standard phraseology to be used during flight is a means to overcome language barriers, avoid ambiguous expressions and guarantee a safe and effective operation of an aircraft. Little is known about the interaction that goes on between pilots and air traffic controllers (ATCOs), and even though the language of aviation is English, cockpit communication can be hard to understand for people who are not familiar with this specific language. The scope of this thesis is to examine the origins of this uncommon language, the characteristics and peculiarities of air communication and to shed a little light on this mystery called Aviation English.

Casto, Kristen Lee. "An Examination of Headset, Hearing Sensitivity, Flight Workload, and Communication Signal Quality on Black Hawk Helicopter Simulator Pilot Performance." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/28664.

Full text
Abstract:
Among the many occupational hazards to which Army rotary-wing aviators are exposed is intense noise generated from the aircraft. The potential for permanent hearing loss and difficulty communicating in helicopter noise is well known; an appropriate way to evaluate a hearing-impaired pilotâ s safety risk due to hearing loss is not as well known. Previous research has studied communication ability in helicopter cockpit noise under different headsets, but there are not conclusive data on the combined effects of degraded speech intelligibility due to noise and flight workload under the headset technology currently available to Army helicopter pilots. In particular, there is a scarcity of information on pilots with hearing loss. Currently, Army Aeromedical standards stipulate audiometric threshold criteria for rated helicopter pilots to ensure their safe flying. If the standard is not met, a flight waiver for hearing is generally granted if the pilot demonstrates good (at least 84%) binaural word recognition ability in a quiet environment. A research study was conducted to evaluate Army helicopter pilot performance with regard to flight workload, communication signal quality, headset configuration, and pilot hearing ability. Objectives of the study included the ability to refine current Army audiometric hearing waiver criteria, and to yield data on which to base flight and headset selection recommendations for pilots. In general, it was believed that flight performance and ratings of situation awareness (SA) would decrease as flight workload increased and communication signal quality decreased, and that assistive communication devices coupled with headsets would afford improved flight performance over their passive counterpart. It was also hypothesized that normal-hearing pilots would perform better than hearing-impaired pilots would. Twenty Army helicopter pilots (one group of 10 pilots without a hearing waiver and one group of 10 pilots with a hearing waiver) participated in this study. The pilots flew three flights in a Black Hawk flight simulator, each with a different headset configuration and with varying flight workload levels and varying air traffic control (ATC) communication signal quality. Objective flight performance parameters of heading, altitude, and airspeed deviation and ATC command readbacks were measured. Additionally, measurements were taken on subjective measures of workload, SA, and headset comfort/speech intelligibility. Experimental results partially supported the research hypotheses. Results indicated that flight performance and ratings of SA were negatively affected by increased flight workload and decreased communication signal quality for both groups of pilots. Results also showed that a passive headset/passive earplug combination use by the hearing-impaired group of pilots led to degradation of certain flight performance parameters and lower ratings of SA than the headsets equipped with assistive communication technology; however, the same headset effect was not seen with the group of normal-hearing pilots. This study yielded results that support a conclusion that factors other than hearing thresholds and word recognition ability in a quiet environment should be considered when evaluating Army helicopter pilots flight safety with regard to hearing sensitivity. Rather, the synergistic effects of flight workload and communication signal quality with individual hearing levels should be considered when making continued flight recommendations and headset choice recommendations. Results also support a recommendation requiring hearing-impaired pilots to use assistive communication technology and not be permitted to fly with passive headset devices. Further research should include a functional hearing assessment in which pilot hearing requirements are determined and individual hearing abilities are compared to the requirements.

Abstract:
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was one of the best models of aeronautical exploitation in Africa during colonization and over a couple of decades after independence to the extent of being congratulated by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Today, in contrast, this huge central African country (DRC) is the bad student in world civil aviation in terms of security and the worst in terms of air accidents and disasters since the sector was liberalized in 1978. The consequence is that ORC has been blacklisted by the European Union since 2005. In the collective memory and the media, DRC is associated with crashes and air disasters so that every lime there is a plane crash anywhere in the world, reference is made to ORC. This research questions the issue of communication within organizations. New paradigms of air accidents are questioned with the aim of their prevention upstream in air transport. The main research question is about communication in civil aeronautics. As a matter of tact, even though registered occurrences in ORC have been attributed either to human error or to technology, or to the environment, or sometimes to the combination of these three factors, results of this study conducted in a genealogic-process, socio-anthropological and macro aeronautical technically-systemic approach indicate that the avalanche of air accidents and disasters in ORC is due to "autistic communication", that is, "the normalization of the abnormal, dysfunction, deviances and infringement of standards", thus 'the abnormal standardized" or through communication that proceeds by discrepancies to standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in a highly regulated and standardized field. The study depicts the evolution of Congolese civil aeronautics since its colonial origins until the present, it immerses itself in the organizations or structures of its "security sector", and outlines the types of communications, interactions, relations and interrelations that occur in there including paradoxical, ambiguous, confusing, incompatible, absurd communications, non-communications, communicational blindness or denial of communication, dialog of the deaf, transpersonal defense communication, silence as waffle. Finally, the research analyzes air accidents and disasters that occurred in DRC between 1990 and 2011 without leniency to demonstrate this and suggests a systemic theory of civil aeronautics security sector as "a brake" to autistic communicational practices in civil aviation

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to establish a nation-wide cost-benefit framework for aviation projection appraisal. This framework is built upon Transportation System Analysis Model developed at Virginia Tech Air Transportation System Model (TSAM). Both supply and demand characteristics and their inter-dependence are investigated. It attempts to solve the absence of supply constraints in aviation demand forecast in the literature. In addition, external costs in term of noise and emission are also considered. A national environmental impact analysis introduced by new generation small aircraft system is conducted. Two case studies are discussed to illustrate the framework. The first one is based on the GPS Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) Lower Landing Minima capability. It represents a nation-wide cost-benefit analysis with examination of both supply and demand. System-wide benefit of accessibility improvement and infrastructure cost are scrutinized at the same time. A prioritized set of candidate airports for this technology is provided as a result. The second study focuses on New York area. Benefits brought by DataComm technology are evaluated by multi-iteration simulations. DataComm is projected to reduce entry point intrail and final approach separation. The improvements are modeled at individual airport and New York airspace. Consumer surplus is estimated based on demand and delay relationship using TSAM.

Abstract:
GNSS is used nowadays in various fields for navigation and positioning including safety -of-life applications. Among these applications is civil aviation that requires a very high quality of service for the most demanding phases of flight in terms of integrity, accuracy, availability and continuity. To meet these requirements any source of potential service degradations has to be accounted for. One such example is GNSS signal distortions due to the satellite payload which can manifest in two ways: nominal distortions that are generated by healthy satellites due to payload imperfections and nonnominal distortions that are triggered by a satellite payload failure. The thesis first looks at the nominal distortions through GPS L1 C/A and Galileo E1C signals. Different types of observations are used based on correlation or chip domain visualization, and using high-gain and omnidirectional antennas. After the observation of nominal distortions, the dissertation investigates the non-nominal distortions due to the payload failure. Supported by the groundwork performed by civil aviation on signal distortion for the GPS L1 C/A signal, this dissertation aims at proposing new distortions models associated to the new GPS and Galileo signals that will be used by civil aviation after 2020. In particular, new TMs for new signals (GPS L5, Galileo E5a and Galileo E1C) are proposed. Finally, in this dissertation is built an appropriate monitor, referred to as SQM that is able to detect any distortion from the proposed TMs (for new signals) that could lead to a position integrity failure. Regarding GPS L1 C/A signal monitoring, such SQM is today implemented in GNSS augmentation systems including GBAS and SBAS. The current monitors are based on the analysis of the correlation function.

The purpose of this research was to introduce a Transformational Communications Architecture for the Unit Operations Center (UOC); Common Aviation Command and Control System (CAC2S); and Command and Control On-the- Move Network, Digital Over-the-Horizon Relay (CoNDOR). The methodology used was to conduct Field Tests with government contractors and private vendors in order to demonstrate the capabilities of each wireless technology researched. These wireless technologies, Free Space Optics (FSO), Microwave, 802.16, 802.11b over SecNet-11, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM), Broadband Satellite, INMARSAT, and Iridium, all have the potential of being implemented in the transformational communications architecture for intra-nodal and inter-nodal links for UOC and CAC2S, as well as the CoNDOR communications architecture. The ultimate goal of this research was to introduce different technologies that offer more flexibility, mobility, and capability at the tactical level giving the Marine Corps the tactical wireless edge. Throughout this research, the focus revolved around testing equipment and network configurations in an IP network. Special consideration was given to wireless issues for the UOC, CAC2S, and CoNDOR, which could improve line-of-sight, beyond line-of-sight, and over-the-horizon communications for each program. These new technologies will transform communications in the United States Marine Corps for the 21st century.

Nowadays the basis of agreements about air traffic between Ukraine and other countries are bilateral air service agreements (ASA). Aviation communication between Ukraine and EU is regulated on the basis of bilateral air service agreements (ASA) with all member states and Horizontal Agreement with the European Commission on certain aspects of air services. The last one has been developed by European Commission as model agreement that liberalizes air services between the EU and third countries, called „horizontal“. The EU also provides setting up open aviation areas (so called “open skies”) with key partners to further liberalise сertain markets on the bilateral basis by European Common Aviation Area (ECAA) agreement between the EU and third countries.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the French Army Light Aviation (ALAT) has been concerned with the process of digitalization of the battlefield. In the meantime, only very few scholars had addressed this issue although the consequences of such studies could lead to a paradigm shift in the aerocombat. This Ph. D. Thesis aims to outline a series of new outcomes in terms of evolutions of the Information System understood from the perspective of emerging uses developed by the ALAT pilots dealing with Helicopter Mission Planning. This research studies the emerging uses apprehended as “bricolages” in Ciborra’s sense and in the socio materiality theoretical framework. However, the operationalization of the results is subject to the epistemological framework of critical realism, on the one hand, and to the implementation of new methods in terms of experience feedbacks (Lessons Learned), on the other hand

Technological advances and research are pushing the application of unmanned vehicles in exciting directions. This thesis emphasis is on cost estimation for a new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with swarm applications. The new swarm UAV theoretical can be designed to emulate the current unmanned aerial system (UAS) mission, and expand upon the communication relay mission. Small UASs have a line-of-sight capability limitation that leaves room for improvement. The UAVs organic to the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) are the primary focus for this analysis because organic USMC UAVs are habitually small UAVs. The analysis will determine a rough cost estimation range for a future AV with new technology. Based on the adaptation of networking topologies and research, the communication relay mission is a feasible capability to Peruse in future swarm UAVs. The analysis suggests that a swarm UAV is comparable in cost to legacy UAVs currently in service in the USMC.

Abstract:
Abstract Military aviation is characterised by challenging working environments. Even though flying is a heavily visual task, much of the most important information is expressed aurally, via radio. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of radio communication in military aviation environments, the effect of workload on radio communication, as well as the functionality of a new hearing protection system. Flight simulator (F/A-18 Hornet simulator) and heart rate analysis were used to analyse the effect of an increased workload on radio communication. In addition to this, two survey studies were conducted, the first to investigate the prevalence and nature of radio communication problems in military aviation environments, and the second for evaluating the functionality of a new hearing protection solution (moulded communication ear plugs, m-CEPs) for military pilots. In the flight simulator, pilots’ heart rate reflected the level of mental workload. Changes in radio communication were observed during a high workload: The total amount of communication, as well as informing and requesting messages increased. A decrease in acknowledgements was observed. This reflects a change in the team communication tactics during information-loaded flight phases. In survey studies, radio speech communication problems occurred during 14% of the flight time. The most prevalent problems included multiple speakers and overlapping speech on the radio frequency band, missing acknowledgments, and high background noise, especially during helicopter operations. During their career, 18% of the respondents had encountered a potentially dangerous event caused by radio communication problems. The pilots reported a high motivation to use enhanced hearing protection systems. m-CEPs were shown to be a promising tool for improving hearing protection and radio communication: they were considered to be better than the previous hearing protectors, and the pilots reported that they improve the experienced speech intelligibility. However, discomfort and technical problems remain a problem. In the challenging hearing conditions of military aviation, the high quality of radio communication and hearing protection remain important. In the future, radio communication training should be improved and focused on team communication training. The technical development of hearing protection devices should be continued to assure the best possible comfort and technical reliability
Tiivistelmä Sotilaslentäjä työskentelee fyysisesti, psyykkisesti ja kognitiivisesti hyvin haastavassa monitehtäväympäristössä. Radiopuheviestinnän onnistuminen on lentoturvallisuuden ja tehtävätehokkuuden kannalta olennaista, sillä merkittävä osa turvallisuuden kannalta kriittisestä informaatiosta välitetään puheella radioteitse. Tämän väitöstutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää radiopuheviestinnän ongelmien esiintymistä ja luonnetta, kuormituksen vaikutusta radiopuheviestintään sekä uuden kuulonsuojausjärjestelmän toimivuutta sotilaslentäjän työssä. Tutkimus toteutettiin lentosimulaattorissa sekä kahdella kyselytutkimuksella. F/A-18 Hornet -simulaattorissa tutkittiin sykeanalyysin avulla lentotehtävän psyykkisen kuormituksen vaikutusta radiopuheviestintään. Kyselytutkimuksilla selvitettiin radiopuheviestintäongelmien yleisyyttä ja luonnetta sekä uuteen kuulonsuojausjärjestelmään (yksilöllisesti valettu kommunikaatiokuulosuojain) liittyviä tekijöitä. Sykeanalyysi osoittautui käyttökelpoiseksi psyykkisen kuormituksen arviontiin simulaattorissa.

The design and life cycle cost of commercially available data communication networks for the Federal Aviation Administration’s Weather Message Switching Center Replacement (WMSCR) were analyzed. Only existing commercial networks large enough to handle the WMSCR traffic load were considered. The recommendation is to proceed into a full and open competitive government procurement. In a competitive environment, this type of procurement will allow the government to receive the lowest possible life cycle cost. A description of the existing system, the end-state system, the interim network design, the commercial networks analyzed, and their associated life cycle costs are included.

Abstract:

Introduction. The academic building №8 holds a special place in the campus of the National Aviation University (NAU). The sixteen-storied building was constructed in the years of 1973-1976, and now it is a dominant building block and a kind of urban business card of the institution. Formulation of the problem. Organization of communications in public buildings is an integral part of the three-dimensional planning structure design. Comfort of the stay and moving, operational safety, building management, and ensuring a rapid and efficient evacuation in emergencies depend on the communications amount, location, capacity, and design decisions. The object of study is the three-dimensional structure of the academic building №8-a, NAU. The subject of the study is the organization of horizontal and vertical communications. The research was performed in December 2019 during a typological analysis of the building under the guidance of the faculty of the Department of Urban Planning of the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Design.

Abstract:
In spring 2019 the flight debate suddenly got a lot of attention in Sweden. Influencers and companies were starting to become the centre of attention for the critic regarding climate change due to excessive flying. One reason behind this was the appearance of an Instagram account called ”Aningslösa Influencers”. This paper explores how a selection of Swedish newspapers (Aftonbladet, Expressen, Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet) frames the Instagram account. This paper also aims to find out what other topics has gotten attention in the debate. A selection of 20 articles are studied from 1 January 2019 to 31 March 2019 using a content analysis. The theoretical frameworks for the study includes Framing, News values and Social-Norms Theory. The result shows that the majority of the articles presented a balanced reporting of the Instagram account Aningslösa Influencers. If positive or negative reporting were presented, it was presented in the same extent. The result also shows that the topics that got the most attention was influencers, air shame, guilt and shame, the readers responsibility, public opinion, and the threat due to flying.

Abstract:
Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) is a significant feature of the contemporary world and it is a particular challenge to the armed forces of many states which are involved is such conflict, or are likely to become so. This thesis is not concerned with how such difficult conflict situations arise. Rather it is concerned with how, from the point of view of the state, they may be contained and ultimately brought to a satisfactory resolution. The work is thus concerned with the practicalities of ending LIC. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to establish a framework of doctrinal and military principles applicable to the prevention and resolution of LIC. The principles of this thesis are based in numerous historical examples of LIC and six in depth case studies. These distilled principles are analysed in two central chapters, and are then applied in two latter defence force chapters so as to ensure there practicality and resilience. Numerous defence academics and military practitioners have been consulted in the production of this thesis; their contribution has further reinforced the functionality of the principles examined in this research. The research illustrates the criticality of a holistic approach to LIC. The function of this approach is to guarantee the stability of the sovereign state, by unifying civil, police, intelligence and military services. The effectiveness of the military elements must also be ensured, as military force is central to the suppression of LIC. As a worldwide usage language, English has become a standard language in the Aviation industry. Relevant practitioners must improve their English skills, especially pertaining to professional knowledge and the capability in radio communication. Local airlines in Taiwan are recruiting employees by screening potential staff of their English for general purposes (EGP) before offering pilot training. However, pilot training is more focused on Aviation professional skills, rules, and terminology in radio communication, English for specific purposes (ESP) than on English communication skills in general situations. Thus, this study aims to investigate the English communication needs of formal pilots, pre-training pilots, and in-training pilots by conducting analysis to locate which English communication skills are required in different phases, establishing more feasible strategies for the English preparation strategy of participants so they can perform better job-related functions in the future. The study is divided into two main parts: background survey, and interviews. First, a background questionnaire survey which contained questions about participants’ information, English proficiency level, and their experiences in the preparation for being a pilot was conducted to understand the current situation of each participant in different phases. Qualitative inquiry was utilized to interview two pre-training pilots, two in-training pilots, and two formal pilots in the first interview and two in-training pilots, one in-training pilot, and two formal pilots in the second interview to understand different demands in English communication. The study shows that the general English ability of Taiwanese pilots must equivalent to the level at the middle-high level in all aspects; listening and reading comprehensions are especially important among them. Other language factors that can possibly influence Aviation communication include a speaker's accent, regardless of the pilot's English proficiency. In addition, the English proficiency of Taiwanese pilots does not need to be as fluent as that of native speakers, and it would not affect the performance in Aviation radio. Apart from general English ability and the TOEIC test score, pre-training pilots are advised to prepare Aviation knowledge, so that the learning can be more efficient after they become in-training pilots and formal pilots. These results of the study could provide a better English preparation strategy for pre-training pilots and in-training pilots, as well as enhance their performance in Aviation communication.

The demands for air transportation keep growing steadily and issues of flight safety are the most important. Human factors are the main reasons for air incidents and accidents, of which pilot-controller communication error is one of the noticeable issues. Most studies addressed this issue with international statistical data, not personal experiences of pilots and controllers in Taiwan. From the subjective results of a questionnaire survey, this study first examined which factor may lead to which communication errors, and next found out which communication error may cause specific aviation occurrences. Third, comparing different results between pilots and controllers and finally this study provided practical implications and suggestions. By Exploratory Factor Analysis, this study extracted five factors, including workload, linguistic factors, pilot anticipation, similar call sign, and frequency change. Besides, this study found two communication errors as readback and hearback error and no pilot readback, and two main aviation occurrences, including runway incursion and altitude/heading deviation. From pilots’ viewpoints, the significant factors comprised workload, pilot anticipation, and frequency change, whereas controllers think those are linguistic factors, pilot anticipation and similar call sign. Furthermore, this study found the different relations between communication errors and aviation occurrences based on pilots and controllers’ opinion. All results suggest pilots and controllers, airlines and government focus on the factors and improve to avoid communication errors and aviation occurrences.

This study mainly investigated the issues of Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) and some incidents on aviation. Thus, the study was divided into two experiments. The first experiment was to investigate the effects of communication mediums, flight phases, and the roles in the cockpit on pilots’ situation awareness and the second one was to discuss the effects of whether some incidents occurred or not on pilot’s situation awareness. In this study, SAGAT and SART were used to evaluate pilot’s situation awareness on each experiment respectively. The results for the first experiment showed that flight phases had significant influence on pilot’s situation awareness, and a significant interaction between the flight phases and the communication mediums was found. In addition, the results for the second experiment showed that incidents had the significant influence on pilot’s situation awareness.

As the development of Taiwan’s integrated marketing communications industry, the advertiser used to choose the broadcasting agency by “pitching.” This intangibly increases the operational cost of the communication agency. The rise of China causes the outsourcing of Taiwan’s businesses which make it more difficult for the integrated marketing communications industry to run business. After the signing of “the Air Transportation Agreement between the Two Shores” on November 4th, 2008 by the representatives from Taiwan and China, it was the first step opening the business in China investing in Taiwan. Also, it creates a new business opportunity for Taiwan and brings new customers to the integrated marketing communications industry. This research plans to use the study of the relational marketing in integrated marketing communications industry-use the airlines that serves the Taiwanese business funded by China capital as the example- as the reference for communication agency in the future operation in the China-capital-funded businesses. This research adapted case study and in-depth interview to discuss the relationship between the airlines funded by China capital and integrated marketing communications industry. The results were concluded as follow. I. the allocation of the airlines funded by China capital in Taiwan’s airlines market was to establish the images of “communicating Taiwan and China” and “localized operation.” II. The marketing direction and the demand of the airlines funded by China capital in Taiwan’s airlines market was to directly stimulate the sales and establish business image. These were achieved through united promotion with the travel agencies, marketing promotion for the business and often-travel passengers, Internet marketing, and the participation of the charity activities. III. The airlines funded by China capital held positive and affirmative points of view toward the transmission of individual services to broadcasting agencies; especially the professional and creativities areas were highly evaluated. IV. The relationship between the airlines funded by China capital and broadcasting agencies was currently in the socially connection relation. Both parties hope to become long-term partners and further to bond structurally through mutual efforts. V. Restricted by the airways limitation of both shores and the scale of Taiwan’s airlines market, the airlines funded by China capital does not lean for comprehensive marketing. They only input marketing resources when the airway, the airway locations, or the flights are changed.

(7022243), Nicoletta Fala. "Data-Driven Safety Feedback as Part of Debrief for General Aviation Pilots." Thesis, 2019.

Find full text
Abstract:

General Aviation (GA) is the foundation of most flying activities and the training ground for civilian pilots, both recreational and professional. However, the safety record for GA is lacking compared to that of commercial aviation. Approximately 75% of accidents each year involve personnel factors, that is, even if the pilot was not the cause of the accident, they could have done something to either prevent it or improve the outcome.

In this research, I aim to improve GA safety through safety-driven post-flight debrief that encourages pilots to consider the risk in their flights and identify behavioral changes that could make their flying safer. Providing pilots with a debrief tool that they can use with or without a flight instructor requires that we know both what to communicate, and how to communicate it. Risk communication heuristics and biases have not been researched in the context of aviation and flight training and we therefore do not know how pilots understand or respond to debrief.

To achieve the goals of this work, I used a three-step process: (1) identify events that may put the safe outcome of a flight at risk, (2) detect those events in flight data, and (3) inform the pilot in a way that helps them improve in their future flights. I use a state-based representation of historical aviation accidents to define a list of events or behaviors that need to be communicated to the pilots, in the form of states and triggers. I use flight data to retrospectively detect these behaviors upon completion of the flight, by mapping parameters or combinations of parameters that can be calculated and tracked in the flight data to the hazardous states and triggers defined. To present these events to pilots, I created a prototype interactive debrief tool with risk information that I use in a survey to evaluate the effectiveness of feedback in different representation formats. Specifically, I evaluate the impact of three factors: representation method (graphical and numerical), parameter type (safety and performance parameters), and framing language (risk-centric and safety-centric).

I disseminated the survey via aviation mailing lists, type groups, flying clubs, and flight training providers, end received 268 responses. The survey analysis showed that the feedback representation does affect its effectiveness in terms of risk perception, but not when it comes to pilots’ motivation to change. The lessons learnt from this survey can be used in creating additional surveys that delve further into risk communication biases and our understanding of how pilots perceive risk and feedback.

This paper deals with the understanding of the role of networked social technologies in the management of crisis communication in aviation sector organizations. The crisis, understood as an adverse situation that affects the normal functioning of the organization, poses as a threats to the safety and integrity of the company and its stakeholders, which can result in human, financial and reputational losses. With the application of new network technologies in an organizational context, new and complex problems arise, but also opportunities that affect the entire communication management process in crisis situations. Since the aviation sector is a very specific area of study, composed of several dependent organizations that cohabit with each other, new social technologies can act as potential crisis scatters, but also as tools for managing and deterring the effects of crises. It is therefore necessary to understand how social technologies are used in a crisis situation and to see if they are understood as a threat or as an opportunity. With regard to the management of communication in a crisis context, it is intended to understand if there is a communication strategy for crisis management in airline companies; Whether social technologies are integrated into crisis communication and whether there is a policy of monitoring and monitoring social technologies aimed at minimizing the effects and repercussions of the crisis on the reputation and image of the organization. This work leis in the field of communication studies in organizations, in particular crisis communication, and uses methodological approaches for the characteristic of the content analysis and case study. Thus, the work integrates a descriptive study with the use of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, whose object is studied by the organizations of the air sector, namely aviation companies, aerodrome operators, air navigation companies, handlers and the regulatory authority of the sector in Portugal. The main objective of this work is to produce an explanatory model of the role and functions of networked social technologies in the context of the crisis management process. In particular, it is intended that this model has applicability to the aeronautical community, in concrete organizational contexts.

Abstract:
Every year, tens of thousands of patients in North America die from preventable errors. Incident learning can decrease this number, but is not currently reaching its full potential in health care. The goal of this research was to propose strategies to effectively report and learn from incidents to drive quality improvement. A detailed literature review, focus groups, in-depth interviews, and thematic analysis were used to identify potential process improvement strategies from aviation and nuclear power and assess these strategies for feasibility and desirability in health care. This work was guided by World Health Organization recommendations and Rasmussen’s risk management framework. An extensive list of strategies to address existing shortcomings was ultimately proposed for consideration in health care. These strategies can serve as guidelines to proactively improve incident learning processes. This should help create more effective systems and in turn, improve patient safety.
