This thesis presents the first scholarly attempt to provide a systematic study—by way of rational reconstruction—of Avicenna’s philosophical analysis of knowledge. The analysis is centred on the well-known but ill-researched epistemic notions of apprehension (taṣawwur) and judgement (taṣdīq) that Avicenna consistently claims to be the necessary and sufficient conditions for anyone to be regarded as having knowledge. In this study I examine Avicenna's (d. 1037) theory of conditional propositions, (or "if, then" sentences, qaḍāyā šarṭiyya muttaṣila), and his system of repetitive and conjunctive syllogisms (qiyāsāt istiṯnāʾiyya, qiyāsāt iqtirāniyya). I show that Avicenna's theory of conditional propositions is conceived as a rejection of Alfarabi's "context theory"–based system of conditional propositions and conditional syllogisms (qaḍāyā šarṭiyya). This dissertation is a study of the intellectual history of Ṣadr al-Dīn Dashtakī (d. 903/1498) and Ghiyāath al-Dīn Dashtakī (d. 949/1542), two important Shirazi philosophers and Shi'i thinkers who lived in the late Timurid and early Safavid period. It argues that Avicennan philosophy was revived and provided with a new impetus at a time when it was under attack by Ash'ari thinkers belonging to the later tradition.
