Full textThis thesis aims to investigate the cultural sector (cultural industries and alive spectacle) in France and in Quebec, in order to show in what the various institutionalists economic theories are likely to account for the diversity of the forms of enterprises. Our analysis relates more precisely to the "social economy" (associations, co-operatives, mutual insurance companies). We use various statistical methods (instrumental variables and "matching" based on propensity score with data from national surveys (INSEE, France & Ministère de la Culture du Québec); textual data analysis with data from business and activities reports). We established three stylized facts with a general validity (relation between implication and cultural consumption ; specific place of the social economy on certain activities ; plurality of the motivations of the stakeholders). The various institutionalisms (rational choice institutionalism, conventionalist institutionalism and historical institutionalism) were then confronted with these facts. We highlight the need for an articulation of these different theoretical frameworks

Full textSupply management (SM) in the agricultural sector creates a relatively stabilized environment for producers since this type of market regulation sets an equilibrium between agricultural supply and demand at the National level (National Level), SM determines the price received in production based on production costs and import control. Economists identify investment as a very important factor for economic growth, productivity, and market efficiency. For a long time, the relationship between SM and investment has generated a debate among experts. However, to our knowledge,no scientific analysis has specifically emphasized this relationship in recent years. This study aims to make tangible contributions to this debate by analyzing the relationship between the sectors under SM (milk, egg, chicken), the sectors that are not under SM (pork, beef, grains, and oilseeds) and investment. To achieve this, a mixed research approach has been adopted based on the exploitation of secondary data and the collection of primary data through an online survey of management and funding advisors. The results of the study showed that producers under supply management would make higher investments and in a wide range of assets than producers who are not. They would invest in "offensive" investments such as technology, land purchase, construction of buildings, modernization of equipment, machinery, and new equipment. On the other hand, producers without supply management invest in “defensive” investments such as replacement investments and investments to comply with existing standards. Other results obtained from the survey of advisors show that factors associated with the economic environment which influences agricultural investments in descending order are income stability, price stability, investment opportunities, asset availability and profit margin. Producers under SM would therefore operate in an environment that stabilizes prices and incomes, which would generate a higher profit marginand boosts investment. It equally offers guarantees to financial institutions and increases there payment capacity of the operation. These results allow us to suggest that the economic environment (with or without SM) in whicha gricultural holdings operate influences their types of investments.

Full textThis thesis investigates investment in human capital in Canada including the contribution of financial assistance to students, the profitability of investment in postsecondary education and the income redistribution. It is divided in five chapters. The first chapter presents a chronological survey of microeconomics studies on investment in human capital. It also summarizes Canadian studies on investment in education and highlights the main limitations of these studies, particularly in terms of how they disregard the heterogeneity of grant and tax system among Canadian provinces and the sharing of benefits and costs of investment in education in Canada. The second chapter presents the methodology of measurement of returns to education and gains from investment in education. It describes data used the results of the econometric regressions. Finally, the chapter presents SIMAID, a calculator of financial assistance to students developed for the purpose of this dissertation with the aim to estimate the amount of grant to which each student is entitled to according his/her personal and family characteristics. In its first section, the third chapter reports social, private and public returns to education and shows that returns vary across provinces, fields of study, gender and cohort of birth year and decline with respect to the level of education. In its second section, the chapter shows a positive impact of financial assistance on returns to a B.A. degree of 24.3% and 9.5% in Quebec and Ontario respectively. Finally, the chapter indicates that a substitution of Quebec’s grant system with Ontario’ssystem decreases private returns to a B.A. degree by -11.9% while a change of Quebec’s tax for Ontario’s system raises private returns to a B.A. degree by +4.5%. The combined effect of both a change of grant and tax systems on private returns to a B.A. is a 7.4% decline. The fourth chapter provides a detailed title-by-title accounting decomposition of social, private and public gains from investment in education. The social gain from an investment in a B.A. degree is $738,384 dollars in Quebec and $685,437 in Ontario. This gain varies from one field of study to another, with the lowest level in the humanities and the highest level in engineering studies. The chapter shows that the sharing of benefits from investment in education between individuals and government regarding the sharing of costs is more equitable in Ontario than in Quebec. Indeed, an individual who invests in education in Quebec supports 51.6% of the total costs of investment and earns 64.8% of the social gain while the same individuals will support 62.9% of social costs and earn 62.2% of social gain if he/she invest in education in Ontario. Finally, the fifth chapter reports on and analyzes the redistributive effects of taxes and transfers due to investment in education. It also investigates whether or not the financial assistance to students program is actually in favour of the poorest individuals. The argument from which a grant is provided to poor individual is overturned when analyzing the distribution of permanent income. Indeed, we find that 79% of grant beneficiaries are in the richest quintile (Q5) of permanent incomes. The chapter also shows that investment in education positively impacts the redistributive effect in 2006, 2001 and 1996 and negatively in 1991 and 2011. The impact is also observable on the components of the redistributive effects. However, its sensitivity to the discount rate varies with respect to the index used in the analysis.

Full textThe character more global of the world economy cannot ignore that it depends on economic health of cities and territories. Their economic development implies the existence, inside the local industries, of special ones, called here "jacobian", whose caracteristics and behavior with their environment make them appear as the very heart of the local economy : frequent in many industrial districts namely, they are at the origin of their dynamism a study conducted in Montreal (Canada) puts in evidence that the special behavior of the jacobian enterprises with the local environment may be due to the "local reinvestment" of those firms; the report defines that concept and gives, through a short exercise of modelization, the description of its effects on the local environment. Consequently, it is possible to think about a new definition of the public policies regarding the local economic development, in order to maximize their efficiency
