Full textThis thesis aims to investigate the cultural sector (cultural industries and alive spectacle) in France and in Quebec, in order to show in what the various institutionalists economic theories are likely to account for the diversity of the forms of enterprises. Our analysis relates more precisely to the "social economy" (associations, co-operatives, mutual insurance companies). We use various statistical methods (instrumental variables and "matching" based on propensity score with data from national surveys (INSEE, France & Ministère de la Culture du Québec); textual data analysis with data from business and activities reports). We established three stylized facts with a general validity (relation between implication and cultural consumption ; specific place of the social economy on certain activities ; plurality of the motivations of the stakeholders). The various institutionalisms (rational choice institutionalism, conventionalist institutionalism and historical institutionalism) were then confronted with these facts. We highlight the need for an articulation of these different theoretical frameworks

Full textSupply management (SM) in the agricultural sector creates a relatively stabilized environment for producers since this type of market regulation sets an equilibrium between agricultural supply and demand at the National level (National Level), SM determines the price received in production based on production costs and import control. Economists identify investment as a very important factor for economic growth, productivity, and market efficiency. For a long time, the relationship between SM and investment has generated a debate among experts. However, to our knowledge,no scientific analysis has specifically emphasized this relationship in recent years. This study aims to make tangible contributions to this debate by analyzing the relationship between the sectors under SM (milk, egg, chicken), the sectors that are not under SM (pork, beef, grains, and oilseeds) and investment. To achieve this, a mixed research approach has been adopted based on the exploitation of secondary data and the collection of primary data through an online survey of management and funding advisors. The results of the study showed that producers under supply management would make higher investments and in a wide range of assets than producers who are not. They would invest in "offensive" investments such as technology, land purchase, construction of buildings, modernization of equipment, machinery, and new equipment. On the other hand, producers without supply management invest in “defensive” investments such as replacement investments and investments to comply with existing standards. Other results obtained from the survey of advisors show that factors associated with the economic environment which influences agricultural investments in descending order are income stability, price stability, investment opportunities, asset availability and profit margin. Producers under SM would therefore operate in an environment that stabilizes prices and incomes, which would generate a higher profit marginand boosts investment. It equally offers guarantees to financial institutions and increases there payment capacity of the operation. These results allow us to suggest that the economic environment (with or without SM) in whicha gricultural holdings operate influences their types of investments.

Full textThis thesis investigates investment in human capital in Canada including the contribution of financial assistance to students, the profitability of investment in postsecondary education and the income redistribution. It is divided in five chapters. The first chapter presents a chronological survey of microeconomics studies on investment in human capital. It also summarizes Canadian studies on investment in education and highlights the main limitations of these studies, particularly in terms of how they disregard the heterogeneity of grant and tax system among Canadian provinces and the sharing of benefits and costs of investment in education in Canada. The second chapter presents the methodology of measurement of returns to education and gains from investment in education. It describes data used the results of the econometric regressions. Finally, the chapter presents SIMAID, a calculator of financial assistance to students developed for the purpose of this dissertation with the aim to estimate the amount of grant to which each student is entitled to according his/her personal and family characteristics. In its first section, the third chapter reports social, private and public returns to education and shows that returns vary across provinces, fields of study, gender and cohort of birth year and decline with respect to the level of education. In its second section, the chapter shows a positive impact of financial assistance on returns to a B.A. degree of 24.3% and 9.5% in Quebec and Ontario respectively. Finally, the chapter indicates that a substitution of Quebec’s grant system with Ontario’ssystem decreases private returns to a B.A. degree by -11.9% while a change of Quebec’s tax for Ontario’s system raises private returns to a B.A. degree by +4.5%. The combined effect of both a change of grant and tax systems on private returns to a B.A. is a 7.4% decline. The fourth chapter provides a detailed title-by-title accounting decomposition of social, private and public gains from investment in education. The social gain from an investment in a B.A. degree is $738,384 dollars in Quebec and $685,437 in Ontario. This gain varies from one field of study to another, with the lowest level in the humanities and the highest level in engineering studies. The chapter shows that the sharing of benefits from investment in education between individuals and government regarding the sharing of costs is more equitable in Ontario than in Quebec. Indeed, an individual who invests in education in Quebec supports 51.6% of the total costs of investment and earns 64.8% of the social gain while the same individuals will support 62.9% of social costs and earn 62.2% of social gain if he/she invest in education in Ontario. Finally, the fifth chapter reports on and analyzes the redistributive effects of taxes and transfers due to investment in education. It also investigates whether or not the financial assistance to students program is actually in favour of the poorest individuals. The argument from which a grant is provided to poor individual is overturned when analyzing the distribution of permanent income. Indeed, we find that 79% of grant beneficiaries are in the richest quintile (Q5) of permanent incomes. The chapter also shows that investment in education positively impacts the redistributive effect in 2006, 2001 and 1996 and negatively in 1991 and 2011. The impact is also observable on the components of the redistributive effects. However, its sensitivity to the discount rate varies with respect to the index used in the analysis.

Full textThe character more global of the world economy cannot ignore that it depends on economic health of cities and territories. Their economic development implies the existence, inside the local industries, of special ones, called here "jacobian", whose caracteristics and behavior with their environment make them appear as the very heart of the local economy : frequent in many industrial districts namely, they are at the origin of their dynamism a study conducted in Montreal (Canada) puts in evidence that the special behavior of the jacobian enterprises with the local environment may be due to the "local reinvestment" of those firms; the report defines that concept and gives, through a short exercise of modelization, the description of its effects on the local environment. Consequently, it is possible to think about a new definition of the public policies regarding the local economic development, in order to maximize their efficiency

Full textConstraints, increasing product quality or improving brand image are reasons that can justify why a firm, or a group of firms would adopt norms. In this master thesis, many studies about normalization are summarized to lay grounds for a theoretical model. The model shows that processors can produce higher value-added goods with higher a quality input (product innovation), for which consumers are willing to pay more. Our analysis shows that a small processor can mitigate market competition with a bigger processor that can decrease its unit cost (process innovation). Our results show that when the small processor chooses his quality independently from his competitor, the latter doesn’t reduce his costs aggressively. When both firms innovate, their profits increase. In the second part of this thesis, two questionnaires are constructed to assess the consumers’ willingness to pay for an increased quality milk. The two surveys allow us to treat a hypothetic type of milk having either a private or a public-good characteristic. Respondents in each survey signal strong animal welfare preferences, as the additional attribute for this type of milk is the access for cows to pastures.

Full textThe dissertation examines two complementary aspects of regional tourism development. First, it explores the delimitation of the territory, and then the identification and validation of the elements which make up the regional tourism system and its operation. A lack of conceptual and structural models adapted to the challenges faced by regional tourism development is the basis for this research. These shortcomings are present in conceptual, structural and instrumental aspects of tourism. Hence, the purpose of the study is to develop an operational and validated model of regional tourism. Quebec is used as the ground of investigation and validation. The main theoretical contribution of this study is to provide an integrated and validated model of the regional tourism system

Full textChanges in demand are of public interest because of their effect on consumer health and the profitability of the industry. While the Canadian population ages, we observe a consistent downward trend in per capita milk consumption. This study investigates differences in the behav-iour of different profiles of Canadian households in terms of their purchases of dairy products. A two–stage econometric procedure was implemented on subsamples of a dataset pooling three food expenditure surveys. In the first stage, the probability of purchase is estimated to account for the relatively high frequency of zero purchases for some of the ten goods. In the second stage, a demand system allowing for quadratic expenditure effects is estimated. The findings indicate that demand elasticities tend to be higher for households headed by a person between 35 and 64 years old and when household size increases. Relative to other goods, low-fat milk has a higher probability of purchase and its demand is price and expenditure elastic. Generally, price and income elasticity patterns across goods are quite robust across household profiles differing in terms of the age of the head, size, and income. Full textRecent trade agreements or trade talks have put the Canadian dairy supply management on the spotlight, and its pertinence has been questioned. To better understand the perception of Canadian economists on the subject, 18 in-depth interviews have been realised, followed by a survey sent to 2,200 economists in Canada. Results indicate that 51% of the economists in the sample are not favorable to supply management while 43% are. Three types of economists have been identified among the ones not in favor, while two types were identified among the ones favorable. Finally, the probability of being in favor in supply management is related to the level of agricultural economic heterodoxy, the attitude toward “other” functions of agriculture, applied knowledge of the Canadian dairy sector, as measured by our survey, and level of experience.

Full textA strong demand, together with high local production costs, made Japan become the world’s biggest importer of swine meat. For Denmark, Canada and the USA, three important exporters, the state of the competition on this attractive but strongly competitive market of export is of the highest importance. Thus, it turns out essential for them to be able to estimate their competitiveness. In this paper, the method proposed by Goldberg and Knetter (1999), based on the measure of the residual demand elasticity, is implemented. The time series analysis is emphasized, with the development and use of a bootstrap unit root test. Estimation results bring finally to light the imperfect competition characterizing the Japanese market of swine meat.

Full textThis study is conducted to identify the factors which contribute to excess iodine in bulk milk tanks on Canadian dairy farms. Previous studies showed important variability in iodine content in milk in Canada (Borucki Castro et al., 2012, 2010). To prevent iodine excess in milk, Health Canada suggested an interim upper limit on milk iodine concentration of 500µg/liter. In this study, a questionnaire in both French and English was sent to 3,180 dairy farmers from four provinces from Canada and an ordered logistic model was then fitted. Results indicate that the farm management practices as well as dairy producers’ attitudes contribute to iodine excess in bulk milk tanks on Canadian dairy farms. These results are interesting for the designing of adequate programs to reduce the iodine residue variability in milk in the framework of the ongoing project «Understanding and Controlling Variability in Bulk Milk Iodine in Canada».

Full textThis thesis aims to improve our understanding of the hedonic pricing model and its application on real estate property data to investigate and estimate the impact of an environmental event/externality/disamenity of flood on residential property value. Since real estate data is spatially distributed over time, temporal and spatial ‘fixes’ are required in our econometric modelling. The paper builds on the classic hedonic pricing model. A spatiotemporal difference-in-differences (STDID) approach is adopted to investigate the effect of a flood event occurring in 1998 on housing price in Laval city in Canada between 1995-2007. Results suggest that relying on flood zones to investigate the effect of flood on housing price is not an accurate method. This conclusion suggests that most of the heterogeneity in the results found in the literature mainly comes from a bad identification of the houses really flooded. Thus, the usual empirical investigation of flood effects on real estate value measures the impact of flood risk (or risk perception) and not the real effect of flood. Implications of research for future work include the importance of use of a better delimitation of actual houses flooded for the empirical investigation of flood effect on housing price.

Full textPending the possible implementation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), the protocol of which was signed at the autumn 2015, we have analyzed its economic impacts using a partial equilibrium model on the supply-managed Canadian dairy sector. The issue was addressed in terms of tariff liberalization with a minimum access increase per tariff line. Using the short-term scenarios (no adjustments) and long-term scenarios (reduction of the national marketing quota), we analyzed the implications of the TPP for the welfare of the various actors in the sector, inputs and outputs and the quantities offered and consumed. The results show a decrease in the domestic price and the quantity offered of the input as well as a net increase in general short-term and long-term welfare of 0.3% and 0.7%, respectively. -- Keywords: dairy sector, tariff liberalization, minimum access, supply management, Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP).

Full textThe Canadian pulp and paper sector has played a major socio-economic role in the last two centuries. In addition to the advantage of their geographical position, P&P companies have accumulated proven experience in the forest industry, including the treatment of wood biomass. Over the last three decades, these entities have faced difficult environmental constraints, compounded by a chronic market crisis. This latest crisis has had unprecedented social consequences leading to a crisis of sustainability. Over the last decade, the green energy industry has become a basic component of the energy transition strategies for developed countries. Biomass has always been at the heart of such a strategy for Canada. For the P&P, this orientation is an opportunity to solve the growing environmental and economic crisis of the sector. Decision-makers need a road map to transform P&P's factories into an Integrated Forest Biorefinery (IFBR). The choice of technologies, the sizing of production capacity and the choice of bioenergy investment are major concerns for decision-makers. However, assessing the sustainability of this transformation remains a major challenge. Our contribution is focused on developing decision support approaches and tools to support an effective, robust and sustainable transformation of Canada's P&P industry. The objective is to assess the sustainability of the IFBR integration and to present a new business model to decision-makers, which can strengthen their ability to negotiate a favorable incentive policy for bioenergy investments within the framework of the public-private partnership. To achieve this goal, our methodology combines decision support tools, mathematical optimization models, along with financial and economic analysis. Our first contribution proposes the design and application of a sustainability evaluation method integrating the life cycle approach and the optimization of the value creation network as part of a multi-objective mathematical model. The proposed model provides a roadmap for sustainable bioenergy investments, minimizing GHG emissions and maximizing the financial value of the biorefinery over a long-term planning horizon while ensuring optimal management of the incubator activity. In the second contribution, we present a sensitivity analysis of the proposed mathematical model according to well selected scenarios, with the development of a framework for communicating the model to the decision-makers. The purpose of this analysis is to assess the robustness of the model, to communicate to stakeholders the implications of investment choices in bioenergy production in an uncertain environment, and to identify opportunities for improving the effectiveness of the proposed model. In the third contribution, we propose an in-depth tax analysis using accelerated depreciation methods applied to investments in bioenergy. This analysis deals with the impact of the types of depreciations on the choice of bioenergy investment and on sustainability. Our goal is to provide decision makers with a set of decision support tools while strengthening their power to negotiate a tax policy favorable to bioenergy investment. In this part, it was highlighted that the choice of the investment coupled with the choice of its depreciation way offers the investor a more complete visibility on the practical consequences of the investment in the bioenergetics field with respect to prevalent tax legislation. This reinforces the public-private partnership and determines the level of public interventionism needed for the success of the expected transformation of the P&P sector. The social impact analysis and stochastic programming approaches for the robust study were not addressed by this work, they were presented as research perspectives.

Full textWhether resulting from a private or public initiative, art museums have developed through the support of philanthropy (creation, funding the museums’ activities, development of museum collections). In recent years, philanthropy has become an increasingly popular practice in the museum sector, sometimes with the hope of reaching a level comparable to the American philanthropic practice. As a result, the French legislator undertook to support philanthropy by implementing tax incentives. These measures had an important effect as philanthropy for the benefit of art museums developed massively. However, the legal framework for philanthropy remains generally incomplete and its role in encouraging gifts underestimated. This observation has a particular resonance in the context of art museums, where the deficiencies in the legal framework for philanthropy have a significant influence on the conduct of museum activities. This observation is even a matter of urgency in view of the current context in which the legitimacy of tax incentive schemes is being discussed. Consequently, this work focuses on the legal qualification of philanthropic acts for the benefit of art museums in order to determine what complementary legal levers could be put in place to establish an attractive and sustainable legal framework. This approach is enriched by the legal comparison with the United States and Québec, as the former is the reference model for philanthropy for art museums, and the latter allows for a dialogue between civil law and common law traditions. More broadly, this work highlights the challenges related to the development of philanthropy for the benefit of art museums. It also pays particular attention to the power of private will in view of its growing influence on the conduct of activities in the public interest

In recent decades, the accounting field has largely embraced the ideals of the market economy. Competitiveness, branding, performance evaluation − the common use of these terms in the field attests the acceptance and diffusion of ideas and practices specific to a logic that tends to be more and more a market one. Thus, the accounting field, for which professional values such as serving the public or academic values such as inventiveness were once its center of gravity, is now “governed” by objectives of competitiveness prevailing in the global economy. Much has been written about the reasons explaining the introduction and spread of the market logic into the accounting field. However, the subsequent repercussions, to some extent, remain obscure. This thesis, consisting of three articles, seeks to better understand the dissemination mechanisms and the ramifications of this market logic in three spheres of the accounting field: the professional institutes, accounting firms and academia. The first article brings to the fore certain ramifications of the accounting profession’s commercial shift that have been overlooked thus far. Through an analysis of the promotional brochures produced by the Ordre des comptables agréés du Québec (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Québec), this study explores the relative cultural shift from professionalism to commercialism in the accounting profession, focusing on accountancy’s cultural representations as depicted in these brochures. The second article examines the introduction and consolidation of marketing expertise and the underlying market logic in Canadian accounting firms and the impact on firms’ practices. The third article focuses on the academic evaluation process in an era where research is increasingly perceived as a market. This last paper attempts to provide a better understanding of the development processes of the most influential journal rankings in business and accounting and their use in academia to assess scientific outputs’ quality.

Full textThis thesis is an exploration to operationalize the concept of Sustainable Forest Management, overcoming the prospects offered by the concept of Sustained Yield. In this context, the approach is not to calculate the evolution of production volumes of wood to ensure a constant flow, but to define by the diversity of stakeholders, the consistency in the development of multiple forest activities. This approach requires an associated lighting expert knowledge but also knowledge from actors in forestry and governance stakeholders to understand the effects of such developments in the area. The reality on the ground shows that the concern of forest stakeholders goes beyond the preservation of wood volumes. Thus, forest sustainability encompasses other non-timber and non-monetary values and uses. An evaluation of these other values cannot be achieved without the creation of a participatory process whose aim is to build preferences by the actors themselves. Thus, Sustainable Forest Management becomes a social choice problem to identify acceptable forms of development by local actors. This research will strive to highlight the societal preferences on the pilot territory of Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean by a deliberative approach and multimedia tools of mediation of knowledge
