Abstract:
The human gut microbiome is a complex ecosystem with hundreds of species interacting with each other and the host. One function of the microbiome is to break down undigested nutrients into smaller nutrients, sometimes available for uptake by the host. The digestion of such macromolecules can involve several species where one feeds on another’s byproducts, forming a large cross-feeding network. The method of digital evolution can be of great aid in studying such complex ecosystems by creating models of the studied system. In this study, the digital evolution software Avida was used to study the effects of perturbations in the system on byproduct cross-feeding chain length. Intense perturbations were found to shorten the chain lengths in general whereas weaker perturbations had either a small or no effect. When perturbations ceased, most byproduct chains displayed recovery to lengths similar to the preperturbation lengths. This indicates that byproduct chain lengths may be kept short by common ecological mechanisms alone, explaining why very long chains are rarely observed while still theoretically possible.

Abstract:
The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program is designed to provide resources and strategies to enable underrepresented minority students to attend four-year colleges. Research indicates that the success of the students enrolled in AVID depends on the strict adherence to the AVID components. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the principal and administratorâ s understanding of, commitment to and involvement in AVID accounted for the difference in student achievement between a successful school and one that is not. AVID is a program with demonstrated results, however it is costly. Building principals have to be willing to use a teaching position to staff the AVID coordinator/teacher position, and school districts have to employ tutors for the twice-weekly tutorial sessions. In these difficult fiscal times, districts are looking for places to make adjustments. AVIDâ s demonstrated effectiveness for students in an individual building, as well as district-wide, will be the key to keeping AVID from falling subject to budget cuts. Some of AVIDâ s 11 essentials are instructionally based, such as Cornell Notes and WICR, which directly impact what occurs within the walls of the classroom. Others are more leadership-based, such as staffing and policies for student selection. Yet a third set consists of things which are not actually essentials or may be less tangible, but still have a great impact on AVID, such as the perception of AVID students by peers, the perception of AVID students by the school community in general, and the understanding and oversight of the program within the building. This study focused on the essentials that are leadership based as well as those which are less tangible. It is essential to know what factors in a school make AVID implementation meet with the greatest success. A comparative case study methodology was used. The study used Grade Point Averages to determine two focus schools, and then interviews with principals and AVID administrators was conducted and analyzed. This study demonstrated that the key person in any site is the administrator who directly oversees the program. This individual must be thoroughly trained in all aspects of AVID so that program essentials can by implemented according to AVID guidelines and decisions regarding student success are based on accurate information. Assessment of program implementation is a multi-level process. In order to get an accurate picture of a program implemented in multiple schools, it is essential to first be sure that implementation is uniform within a specific building. Schools that have more than one teacher implementing a program must be monitored to be sure that there is a uniform practice within the building. Those involved with program oversight need to start there, especially if grades are being used as a basis of comparison.

Abstract:
With the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act, schools and school districts have come under increased pressure to demonstrate student proficiency and success at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Each state is required to use standardized test data as evidence of student proficiency. The data is collected by each state and reported to the federal government to demonstrate progress. In Florida, the exam used to record proficiency is the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). At all three levels, the FCAT is administered annually and the results are used to create school grades ranging from A-F. Florida high schools fall in the lowest 10% in the nation for graduation rates, graduating less than 60% of high school students. The pressure created by these high stakes tests have led to a growth in Florida secondary schools implementing the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. AVID seeks to offer a rigorous curriculum with additional support to underserved students. However, some literature demonstrates that schools with AVID improve the success of not only AVID students, but the overall population as well. This is commonly referred to as the "AVIDization" of a school. This study used an independent t-test to compare middle schools in eleven Florida county school districts with AVID to non-AVID schools in the 2007-2008 school year in six main areas; a) FCAT Math scores, b) FCAT Reading scores, C) overall FCAT scores, d) frequency of disciplinary incidences, e) attendance rates, and f) overall FCAT scores with controlled data. In this study, 85 middle schools had AVID and 179 middle schools were non-AVID. In comparing AVID to non-AVID students in the six areas, the t-test demonstrated that schools with the AVID program did not outperform non-AVID schools in the three FCAT tested areas. Also, the data shows that AVID schools were more likely to have higher reported rates of disciplinary incidences then non-AVID schools.

Abstract:

A great amount of research has shown the importance of the teacher-student relationship, especially as it relates to students’ academic, and social and emotional outcomes. Pianta (1999) explains that the relationship between children, teachers, and non-parental adults have a significant role in the students’ development of competencies, their social and emotional wellbeing, and their willingness to participate in school regularly. Ellerbrock, Abbas, DiCicco, Denmon, Sabella, and Hart (2015) also agree that through meaningful relationships grounded in genuine care, educators nurture a responsive classroom environment that can help set the foundation for student success. This study examines the relationship between Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) students in grades 11 and 12 and their AVID teachers. Participants of the study were from five local high schools in one school district. Data was collected from students surveyed on their relationship with their AVID teachers of whom they have had over their AVID career. Measurements such as using a Likert scale survey and focus group interviews were used to determine the influence the participants’ AVID teacher(s) had on the participants’ academics, social and emotional growth, and a willingness to attend school regularly. Results of the measuring tools reveal a strong correlation between the relationship of the AVID teacher and the impact it has on the participant, especially the positive influence in academics and social and emotional outcomes.

Abstract:
The focus of this study was to examine the relationship of student participation in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program and student academic performance. More specifically, this study was conducted to determine if there was a mean difference in student performance on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) in mathematics, reading, and writing between students who participated in the AVID program during their first two years of high school and students who had similar demographics (e.g., ethnicity, gender, and economic status) but did not participate in the AVID program for 2007-2009. The population for this study consisted of students from six high schools with certified AVID programs during the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years in two central Florida school districts. Students participating in the AVID program were matched with non-AVID participants for each school site by ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, and tenth grade mathematics or English course. The results of this study did not indicate statistically significant differences in the FCAT mathematics and reading developmental scale score gains between the AVID and non-AVID students. However, the non-AVID students performed significantly higher on the tenth grade writing component of the FCAT. Participation in the AVID program produced no statistically significant findings for the factors of gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status for FCAT mathematics, reading, or writing. The findings indicated that AVID and non-AVID students could not be differentiated by FCAT performance measures in the mathematics and reading domains.

Abstract:
Thesis (MMus)-- Stellenbosch University, 2013.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is ironic that with so much interest in singing as a career, the possiblities for trained singers are getting less and less, especially in South Africa. With reality programmes such as Idols and Superstars, the popular music world is overflowed with singers with little, if any, voice training. Then there are also singers who try to establish themselves as crossover artists and perform opera arias on stages such as the KKNK Classic Pops and Die Burger’s Afri-Klassiek concerts accompanied by South Africa’s foremost symphony and philharmonic orchestras. But what about the classical singer who cross over into other genres of singing and like some local and international artists have proved to us, musicals could be a genre to explore. This study explore the possiblity of this type of crossover from classical singing to musical singing. By listening to sound recordings and using a series of musical volumes, songs were identified that the classical singer could sing without harming his or her voice technique. One of the success stories of this type of crossover is the Capetonian soprano, Aviva Pelham. In 1972 Pelham established herself as an opera singer in Cape Town and then confused the classical world with her appearance as Eliza Doolittle in 1978. After that she had a successful career on both classical and musical stages. During her career of nearly 40 years as performing artist, Pelham appeared in 28 different opera roles, 11 different operetta roles and 10 musical roles. Aviva Pelham’s achievements were laureated with a Cape Nederburg Opera Prize, four FNB Vita Awards and in 2000 an Arts, Culture and Heritage Award from the Western Cape Minister for Environment and Culture

Abstract:
This thesis, based on extensive fieldwork (from 1978 to 1985) at La Nava de San Miguel, a village in the province of Avila in central Spain, attempts to demonstrate six main points: 1. That the continued vitality of the village as a community is based on the economic factors of possession of large summer and autumn pastures near the village, transhumance to winter pastures over the mountains in Extremadura, the cattle market at nearby El Barco de Avila, and virtual self-subsistance, all of which enable the villagers to maintain themselves as cattle raisers; and to the strength of: a) the village ideal of co-operation embodied in the use of the common known as the 'Sierra de Socios', the transhumant groups and the systems organized by the 'torno'; and b) the village ideal of mutual assistance shown at hay-making, pig-killing, and other aspects of daily life in the village. 2. That all co-operative institutions inside the village are organized by the principle of the 'torno', by which rights and obligations to these co-operative institutions rotate cyclically ('like a wheel which turns endlessly') and the village itself is conceived of by its inhabitants as essentially having no beginning and no end. 3. That the co-operative institution outside the village (the transhumant group which goes to the winter pastures in Extremadura) is not organized by the 'torno', since the villagers are members of the transhumant groups as individuals, free to change from one group to another, and decisions made by these groups are not controlled by the village as a community. 4. That the villagers conceptually divide the village and the surrounding territory into the 'realm of the men' (apart from the bar, outside the village) and the 'realm of the women' (inside the village). 5. That the people of La Nava conceptualize the world as consisting essentially of two parts: the complementary halves of themselves (their village and their region) and the land across the mountains to the south of them, Extremadura. The villagers radically contrast their village - regarded as cold, dark, and lacking in fertility - with the warmth, sun, and fertility of Extremadura. 6. That unlike affairs in the village organized to ensure continuity and equity by the principle of the 'torno' and following a movement of rotation, all relations with Extremadura are considered to move up and down in a lineal direction to ensure fertility and life when these are lacking in the village. The thesis consists of four chapters: Chapter I looks at the physical situation, climatic conditions, historical background, and other introductory information; Chapter II examines the socioeconomic institutions of the village - the 'Sierra de Socios', the systems of 'tornos' for herding the goats, irrigating the fields, etc.; Chapter III deals with the annual cycle of transhumance to and from Extremadura; and Chapter IV examines the 'world-view' of the villagers of La Nava - especially the symbolic aspects of this - and, in particular, the perception they have of their own identity in relation to Extremadura.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine teachers? perceptions of the use of AVID in the math classroom in regards to future implementation of AVID in mathematics. To fully examine these perceptions, teachers identified the perceived benefits and drawbacks of AVID as well as the AVID WICOR strategies. This was done in two phases. The first phase was a survey that gathered basic demographic information as well as information that pertained to their initial thoughts on the use of the AVID WICOR strategies. From the survey data, five participants were chosen to be interviewed in phase two of the study to explore their perceptions further. The results from this phase were analyzed and coded to help further identify commonalities amongst interviewees. The data showed that all of the AVID WICOR strategies aligned with effective math teaching practices and offered benefits to students and student achievement if implemented.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is launched from the general understanding that History is a dialectical process comprised by the contributions of multiple actors, all of which interact in a contentious give-and-take. Keeping in mind this precept, ,I look at the novel La carga, by contemporary Equatoguinean author Juan Tomas Avila Laurel, as an alternative source of history, and assess that history as he has constructed it. This entails not only a detailed exploration of the world he creates within the novel, but a look at the intertextual bonds he establishes with such nineteenth-century writers as Manuel Iradier and Jose Marti. My analysis begins with the general notion that in Avila's granting of textual agency to natural elements one can begin to see the first inklings of a challenge to typical Eurocentric historiography. In the first major, section I look at what for all intents and purposes has been deemed the colonial dialectic, or the greater social dynamic that maintained colonial hegemony, as it is presented in the vignettes of 1940 Equatorial Guinea that we see in La carga. In the next section, I look at what Avila does with some of the discursive tenets of Spanish imperialism, especially those associated with the monolithic conception of Africa and Europe. And finally, I look at the way that relations between spatiality—mainly the geographic classifications inherent in colonial discourses—and subjectivity give way to Avila's commentary on modern-day Equatorial Guinea. I try to close with some speculation on the strategic formation of which Avila and La carga may form part, beginning with a look at his prefacio and concluding with a questioning of where the attitudes outlined in the prefacio may place him on the grand scale of African discourses of resistance.

Abstract:
Educational Administration
Ed.D.
This qualitative case study examined the Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) program in a high-achieving, suburban high school using the foundation of social capital theory. The researcher investigated how students' participation in AVID, specifically their relationships with their AVID teacher and other AVID students, affected their behaviors and achievement in high school along with their plans for attending a post-secondary institution. Five years ago, Bill Gates called America's high schools "obsolete," and, more recently, he testified before the Congress that "every student in America should graduate from high school ready for college, career, and life. "Every child," Gates stated, "no exceptions" (Alliance for Excellent Education, 2007). This notion of preparing every child in America and overcoming their demographics, family backgrounds, and economic hardships is continuing to burden America's public high schools. In this era of accountability, high schools are faced with the monumental undertaking of graduating all of its students and preparing them for post-secondary success while at the same time meeting the requirements set forth by the federal mandate No Child Left Behind (NCLB. To achieve both of these lofty goals, high schools must provide all of its students, especially those who are labeled at-risk, with an appropriate and rigorous instructional program coupled with effective safety nets and interventions designed to provide students with the support they need to be successful academically. Many schools, even those that are high-achieving and positioned in affluent, suburban communities, have pockets of students who are in need of additional support from the school setting in order to succeed. Nationwide, high schools are implementing various programs and intervention systems to enhance student achievement, improve graduation rates, and increase college enrollment. One program that has received recent attention and documented success in numerous high schools is the Advancement via Individual Determination program or AVID. AVID was created especially for students who have historically failed in the educational system by providing them with a core of academically challenging courses and a comprehensive support system at school. The primary data source for this qualitative study was semi-structured interviews with 12th grade AVID students. Additionally, the researcher observed the students on multiple occasions in their AVID class. These interviews and observations provided an in-depth look of the AVID program and how it has influenced the students' educational experiences during high school. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to gather the perspective of the AVID program through the lens of the students who were part of the program. The goal was to investigate the AVID program with a focus on the students' acquisition of social capital in the school setting from adults and their peers. Recently, social capital is receiving educational policy attention relating to how it can be a collective resource that can facilitate the academic success of students in schools. This study analyzed the AVID program and the possibility of utilizing the ideas associated with social capital to improve educational outcomes in a high school setting. The qualitative nature of the study contributed to the body of literature about the AVID program by providing data directly from the students' perspectives and experiences. This case study was intended to provide insight to other school districts that are similar in makeup to the one that was studied. The outcome of this study, regarding the implementation of the AVID program in a high, achieving, suburban high school, can provide similar schools with information about a possible intervention program to improve the educational success of at-risk students who have historically failed in the school setting.

The present work defends the thesis that the different moradas of the book of the Interior Castle of Teresa of Ávila, can visualize different phases of development human and spiritual (or different degrees of love), in which a person finds himself. And at the same time, these phases can be nominated. The thesis proposes a Teresian mystic as an alternative for understanding the love of God by the person and the consequent response to this love, experienced and lived in its intensity. The development of the phases marks the way to maturity in love that deepens the transcendence of self in service to our brothers and sisters, to society in general, generating conversion and transformation of it, the announcement and the continuity of the values proposed by Jesus Christ.

Abstract:

Often considered the gateway to the middle class in the United States, community colleges are struggling to find ways to support all students in career planning and preparation. Unfortunately, increasing numbers of first generation students who enter community colleges through the door of open access, place into developmental education (remedial) courses and must satisfactorily complete this often-rigid sequence before beginning college level classes. For many first-generation, under-prepared, underresourced students, this is a frustrating and often insurmountable barrier, causing many students to abort their postsecondary training.

Creating intentional conditions and instructional strategies that support student learning is essential in increasing the number of first-generation, under-prepared and under-resourced students who enter and complete postsecondary training and degrees. Advancement via Individual Determination Higher Education (AVID HE) is one identified holistic support strategy showing positive trends in supporting this student population on one community college campus.

This study used a mixed methods approach which included both a statistical analysis of a treatment group in a combined reading/writing course called WR91 Mt Hood Community College AVID HE Learning Communities and two stand-alone reading/writing courses called RD90/WR90 courses, along with a case study qualitative methodology to investigate how AVID HE supports pre-college developmental education students to develop sufficient social capital to transition from non-credit (pre-college) to credited courses and programs.

Abstract:
The thesis argues that a Wittgensteinian approach to the 'mystical' writings of a 'mystical theologian' such as Teresa of Avila reveals that rather than exhibiting an ontological mysticism these writings are better understood as enacting what are termed 'mystical strategies' or 'performative discourse'. The notion that both Wittgenstein and Teresa employ what are termed 'therapeutic or transformational strategies' to effect change in their readers is central to its argument. In this respect the thesis concludes that their writing is fundamentally transformational in character.

South, Margaret. "The mystic fire of Teresa of Avila: A comparative study of mysticism and the Kundalini phenomenon." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/6197.

Full text
Abstract:
The sanskrit term Kundalini refers in traditional yogic texts to both a mechanism and a transformative energy in the human body which can be activated spontaneously, or through spiritual disciplines and practices. The awakening of Kundalini is described in the esoteric treatises of India such as the Tantras, as the activation of a spiritual or cosmic energy at the base of the spine which moves upward through the chakras to the head where the union of Siva and Sakti takes place. The objective of this study is to find parallels to the Kundalini experience in a Christian mystical context. Unlike most Western Christian mystical traditions, the Kundalini model acknowledges the psycho-physiological phenomena associated with mystical experience. This dissertation argues that if there is a biological basis for the yogi's transformative experience, Teresa of Avila and other Christian mystics may well have undergone a similar psycho-physiological process. Part I is a cross-cultural study of Kundalini-like phenomena, and includes personal accounts of spiritually awakening experiences. Part I also includes the findings of a questionnaire study conducted by the author in Ottawa, Canada, during 1997--98. Fifty questionnaires were distributed and 70 percent were returned. Twenty-four self-reports of mystical and Kundalini-like experiences are presented in Chapter 6 of this thesis. The findings indicate that mystical experiences are often associated with Kundalini-type experiences, and that Kundalini phenomena is relatively common among people who are engaged in spiritual disciplines and practices. These research findings are important as an increasing number of people in Western society are experiencing Kundalini rising, and its associated phenomena. Part II focuses on the mystical experiences of Teresa of Avila (1515--1582), a Spanish mystic and saint of the Roman Catholic Church. The Kundalini model is used to analyze St. Teresa's writings to investigate whether there is evidence that the activation of a Kundalini-like mechanism may have been involved in some of her mystical experiences. Two types of experiences were selected for analysis: "the flight of the spirit," and the "rapture" experience. The primary sources for this analysis were the following four works: Life, Spiritual Relations, Way of Perfection, and the Interior Castle, all found in The Complete Works of St. Teresa of Jesus, translated by E. Allison Peers. This comparative study of mysticism leads to a reinterpretation, according to the Kundalini yoga model, of some of the unusual phenomena experienced by St. Teresa, such as fire and heat, wounding sensations, and sensations and noises in the head, as well as physical and health problems. The Kundalini model links mystical experience with the sublimation of sexual energy, therefore, the role of sexual energy, and the relationship between sexual orgasm and mystical experience is examined. The findings of this study confirm that Kundalini is a mechanism experienced within diverse cultures and spiritual traditions. Furthermore, there is enough textual evidence in the works of Teresa of Avila to conclude that some of her experiences were associated with the awakening of Kundalini. The conclusions of this study suggest that if the Kundalini model can be applied in analyzing this saint's experiences, then it can also be used to analyze the experiences of other Christian saints and mystics.

Ramos, Jennifer. "A Qualitative Study on Effective Strategies for Building Positive Relationships in the AVID Classroom." Thesis, Brandman University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10017597.

Full text
Abstract:

Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine, understand, and describe the effective strategies secondary AVID teachers in Region 3 of California employ to build positive relationships with students.

Methodology: This qualitative study focused on how AVID teachers build positive relationships with their students, and data were collected through one-on-one interviews and classroom observations. The researcher interviewed eight AVID teachers, who were recommended by the regional AVID coordinator as having strong relational skills with students. From those teachers interviewed, the researcher conducted observations of four AVID teachers to gain a better understanding of the strategies they used to build positive relationships with students. Using both of these data collection instruments allowed the researcher to discover common patterns and themes regarding the effective strategies secondary AVID teachers use to build positive relationships with their students.

Findings: Based on the perceptions of AVID teachers, the implementation of AVID curriculum to support student success, establishing clear academic and behavioral expectations for students, showing a genuine interest in students, nurturing characteristics of the teacher, teacher involvement, and the impact of AVID program characteristics were findings from this study.

Conclusions: Three conclusions can be drawn from this study regarding the strategies AVID teachers use to build positive relationships with their students. First, teachers need to use a relevant curriculum that engages students. Second, teachers who show a genuine interest in students are able to connect to students in a meaningful way. Lastly, teachers need to exhibit characteristics that nurture their students.

Recommendations: Further research is advised. A study could be conducted on teacher preparation programs and their effectiveness in preparing teachers to build positive teacher–student relationships. Another study could examine the impact positive teacher–student relationships have on teachers and students. A study could examine gender imbalance with teachers, specific to the AVID program. A future study could look at the differences in building positive teacher–student relationships between male and female teachers. Another study could examine the implications AVID program characteristics have in relationship building. And lastly, one could replicate this study using non-AVID teachers as the population.

Rivera, Deanne. "Analyzing factors that AVID students perceive important in making financial decisions about paying for college." Scholarly Commons, 2011. https://scholarlycommons.pacific.edu/uop_etds/100.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to analyze factors AVID students perceive as important in making financial decisions about paying for college. This study analyzed the factors college-bound students perceive as important in making decisions about paying for college. Trends in higher education include the rising cost of attendance, longer degree completion time, and the lagging purchasing power of federal grant funding. Existing data has delivered student perceptions regarding college access, affordability, and retention. The researcher framed the study using the human investment capital model. This model is grounded in the basic theory that education is an investment that will provide greater social and financial mobility in the future. The human capital theory coupled with benefits of a college education help guide the research and collects data that capture factors students perceive as important about making financial decisions regarding paying for college. From the data, it was evident that AVID students were seeking to maximize their higher education opportunities. Many students applied to as many as seven colleges while examining tradeoffs of college costs, the impact of financial aid offers, and ways to reduce the total costs. The factors students perceived as important in making financial decisions about paying for college could be put into three categories; tradeoffs, offered financial aid, and reducing the total cost. Students reported that the total cost of education was more important than peer and family approval of their school, academic reputation, and time to degree. However, the location of the school and the social and networking opportunities were more important than the total costs of the school. Conclusions from the study are students would rather attend a school that has less prestige and take longer to earn their degree if the total cost was aligned accordingly. Yet, the location and the networking and social experiences were not worth sacrificing for the students. Students were not willing to attend an institution with a less desirable location or fewer social opportunities even if the costs were minimal. The data say that an important factor for AVID students is the amount of financial aid they will receive.

Abstract:
This study was designed to explore perceptions and lived experiences of avid adolescent male readers, in order to better understand their development as readers. This study explored: (1) how previous reading experiences influence the development of the avid adolescent male reader and (2) how the reading habits and preferences of avid adolescent male readers are socially constructed. Rosenblatt's (1978) Transactional Theory of Literary Work forms the theoretical framework of this study. Rosenblatt (1978) argued that as readers engage with texts, they bring an individual schema to these literary transactions. This prior knowledge and experience are the lens through which the individual reader understands the content of the text. Even when reading the same text, readers respond to the text in individual ways, based on their individual schema. Through the use of a naturalistic inquiry design, data was generated through a series of interviews with the participants. Data analysis was qualitative and iterative, triangulated with multiple interviews, interview mapping, thematic tables, dialogic memos, and researcher field notes. Data analysis led to a better understanding of the development of the avid adolescent male reader, including: (a) the role of family culture on reading identity, (b) peer group influence on reading habits of avid adolescent male readers, and (c) transactional responses of avid adolescent male readers both in and out of educational settings. Data generated during interviews illuminated the complex, individuated and interwoven nature of the elements present in the development of the avid adolescent male reader. Finally, this study gives insight into how understanding the development of these readers may provide teachers with instructional strategies and reading opportunities that support all developing readers.

Abstract:
Chemistry
Ph.D.
The water solubility of transition metals constrain their use in the bioinorganic chemistry of organisms. Iron(III) is one of the most sought-after metals by organisms; however, it has poor solubility in water at physiological pH. Prior to the great oxidation event (GOE) 2.4 billion years ago, iron was more bioavailable in the 2+ oxidation state. This higher water solubility sustained a greater supply of iron to organisms that required it. Since the GOE and the oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III), organisms have been evolving methods to sequester iron from the environment. One method to obtain iron is through the use of low molecular weight molecules called siderophores which solubilize Fe(III) from their environment through chelation. The strongest siderophore to date is enterobactin (ent) which forms a Fe-ent complex with an association constant of 1049. While iron is utilized by most organisms, titanium is also a bioactive metal. Titanium is second to iron in abundance of transition metals in the Earth’s crust and is becoming increasingly relevant in medicine, technology, and commercial goods. Titanium(IV) (the most common oxidation state of titanium) also has a larger charge to size ratio than Fe(III) and may outcompete iron for binding. The already high abundance and increasing usage of titanium in the developed world leads to possible undocumented interactions between titanium and siderophores. In an attempt to address the natural selection of the chemical elements during bioinorganic evolution, the solution interactions of Ti(III), Ti(IV), Fe(II), and Zn(II) with sulfide in a solution mimicking the sulfidic early ocean were explored. Anaerobic metal solutions were added to solutions with ocean-mimicking salts, acetic acid buffer, and increasing concentrations of sodium sulfide. After equilibration, the soluble metal ion concentrations were measured using ICP-OES. Catechol ligands are important bioinorganic chelators. The synthesis and crystallization of the disodium, dilithium, and diammonium salts of the model catechol ligand 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-benzenedisulfonate (tiron) are described. The dilithium and diammonium salts were synthesized from the disodium tiron salt by cation metathesis. The crystals were obtained by solvent evaporation in either alcohols or water. Crystal structures were acquired, solved, and analyzed revealing inter- and intramolecular interactions in the dication tiron crystal structures. The synthesis of the siderophore enterobactin (ent) was improved upon from published methods to increase purity. Following the synthesis of ent, spectrophotometric techniques were used to analyze Ti-ent complex stability. Spectrophotometric titrations were carried out from p[H] 2-12 revealed that the fully catecholate bound [Ti(ent)]2- complex was the only species in the p[H] range 2-9. Above a p[H] value of 9 the trilactone backbone apparently hydrolyzed. This result indicates that protons cannot outcompete Ti(IV) binding at low p[H] and hydroxide cannot outcompete ent for binding to Ti(IV) at high p[H]. Using various Ti(IV)-ligand complexes, the log b110 for Ti-ent was probed at pH 6. The complex [Ti(DFOB)]+ (log b110 = 38.1) with 1,000 fold excess desferrioxamine B (DFOB) was unable to compete with ent and every addition of ent lead to the formation of [Ti(ent)]2- yielding a lower limit log b110 of 52.9. The catecholate ligand tiron was used in a 4,000:1 ratio of tiron:Ti(IV) forming [Ti(tiron)3]8- (log b130 = 57.6) to attempt to compete with ent. This yielded a lower limit log b110 for [Ti(ent)]2- of 61.2. Kinetic studies of titanium sequestration from titanium containing species was also investigated. Using Ti(IV) complexes such as [Ti(DFOB)]+, [Ti(citrate)3]8-, and the titanium complex of human serum transferrin (Ti2HsTf) as the Ti(IV) source, the rate of titanium sequestration by ent was probed. Taken together, these findings indicate that ent is a strong binder of Ti(IV); however, it binds relatively slowly. Strong binding ligands are able to coordinate and dissolve metal ions from the surface of metal oxides. Titanium mostly exists in the solid oxide form in the Earth’s crust, thus solubilization of these oxides may be important for Ti(IV) incorporation into an organism. To determine the effects of ent in solution at a TiO2 interface, 50 mM ent was added to a series of suspensions of TiO2 at pH 5 ± 0.5 with different loadings for 176 h. The [Ti]max for all anatase trials averaged to be approximately 20 – 25 mM indicating 40 – 50% ent efficacy for TiO2 dissolution. This value was compared to previously reported TiO2 dissolution by 2 mM DFOB at pH 2 as well as dissolution of 50 mM and 150 mM DFOB and tiron, respectively, at pH 5 ± 0.5. Surface interactions between ent and anatase were probed using ATR-IR. One extension of this work related to the avid Fe(III) ligand deferasirox (DSX). DSX is an orally administered chelator for Fe(III) overload. A Ti(IV)-DSX complex may be useful as an anticancer drug. The solution chemistry of DSX with Ti(IV) was characterized utilizing spectrophotometric and mass spectrometric techniques. A series of titrations with Ti(IV) and DSX from pH 6.7-11.2 revealed two distinct species. Additions of [Ti(HDSX)(DSX)]- to bovine serum albumin (BSA) indicated that the [Ti(HDSX)(DSX)]- complex binds to BSA. This transfer is possibly an important step in the efficacy of Ti(IV) anticancer drugs and may relate to the possible mechanism for Ti(IV) delivery into cancerous cells.

Abstract:
Low income and under-represented minority students face multiple kinds of barriers that limit their access to higher education. In the interest of increasing access to college, pre-college bridge programs exist throughout the United States to serve students from low socio-economic status families. This study examines teaching by women in the Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) program. AVID is a middle school and high school intervention program that helps middle-achieving low income and under-represented minority students with college access. Critical Portraiture methodology is used to examine the ways that female AVID teachers teach students more than just academic skills that increase access to higher education: the framing of student success, the negotiation and justification of upholding the myth of meritocracy in the classroom, the internalization of parental roles with students, and the navigation of race.
