Abstract:
The concept of justice came to be transformed in the medieval era in the Latin West, particularly between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, due to ongoing shifts in the political and institutional fields. Monarchies became institutionalized due to the influence of debates proposed by the University of Bologna generating the construction of a legal culture systematizing the concepts and criteria for the exercise of justice without abandoning the relationship between these theories and the social context to which it was destined. Municipal representatives came to play an increasingly important role in events such as the rise of the Joanine Dynasty in Portugal (1383-5) and their aspirations and worldview would be sought out as one of the currencies of exchange for the granting of support, reflected in the legislation and in the legal collections developed by descendants of John I of Avis, such as the Alfonsine Ordinations. This constituted a space in which private rights overlapped with the Common Law emanating from the royal court and which crystallized a tendency towards Portuguese legal singularity promoting the hierarchization of the sources of law available in Latin. This work is developed from historical criticism applied to documentary content, Las Siete Partidas del muy noble Rey Don Alfonso el Sabio, Livro das Leis e Posturas, and the Ordenações Afonsinas.

Abstract:

Legitimation Strategies of the Reign of King John I of Portugal (1385 - 1433) in the Narratives of Fernão Lopes and Gomes Zurara

The reign of King John I of Portugal (1385-1433) was marked by several aspects used in his government as strategies of political legitimation, and others that would later be reinforced in the chronological narratives with the same intention to give legitimacy to the newly enthroned dynasty. Among these strategies, we selected four that we believe were central to this process: the alliance with England through the Treaty of Windsor (1386); the marriage of the Portuguese monarch to the daughter of the Duke of Lencastre, Dona Filipa; the conquest of Ceuta in 1415 and the beginning of territorial expansion overseas; and the evocation of royal power through symbolic ceremonies of exaltation to royal authority, as the so-called "royal entrances". As a theoretical contribution, we start from studies on history and memory, the uses of the past in the construction and legitimation of political power, using as reference the works of Le Goff (2013), Pierre Nora (1993), P. Ricoeur (2007), P. Bourdieu (2010), Marcella L. Guimarães (2012) and Maria Helena Coelho (2008). From these references, we propose to analyze how the memories of the selected historical events are present in the narratives, especially in the Crónica de D. João I, by Fernão Lopes and in the Crónica da Tomada de Ceuta by Gomes Zurara, and how these elements were evoked as strategies to legitimize the House of Avis in the fifteen century.

"Spinal extradural arteriovenous fistulas: a clinical and radiological description of different types and their novel treatment with Onyx." Abstract:
Object Spinal extradural (epidural) arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are uncommon vascular lesions of the spine with arteriovenous shunting located primarily in the epidural venous plexus. Understanding the complex anatomical variations of these uncommon lesions is important for management. The authors describe the different types of spinal extradural AVFs and their endovascular management using Onyx. Methods Eight spinal extradural AVFs in 7 patients were studied using MR imaging, spinal angiography, and dynamic CT (DynaCT) between 2005 and 2009. Special consideration was given to the anatomy, pattern of venous drainage, and mass effect upon the nerve roots, spinal cord, and vertebrae. Results The neuroaxial location of the 8 spinal extradural AVFs was lumbosacral in 1 patient, lumbar in 4 patients, thoracic in 2 patients, and cervical in 1 patient. Spinal extradural AVFs were divided into 3 types. In Type A spinal extradural AVFs, arteriovenous shunting occurs in the epidural space and these types have an intradural draining vein causing venous hypertension and spinal cord edema with associated myelopathy or cauda equina syndrome. Type B1 malformations are confined to the epidural space with no intradural draining vein, causing compression of the spinal cord and/or nerve roots with myelopathy and/or radiculopathy. Type B2 malformations are also confined to the epidural space with no intradural draining vein and no mass effect, and are asymptomatic. There were 4 Type A spinal extradural AVFs, 3 Type B1s, and 1 Type B2. Onyx was used in all cases for embolization. Follow-up at 6–24 months showed that 4 patients experienced excellent recovery. Three patients with Type A spinal extradural AVFs attained good motor recovery but experienced persistent bladder and/or bowel problems. Conclusions The current description of the different types of spinal extradural AVFs can help in understanding their pathophysiology and guide management. DynaCT was found to be useful in understanding the complex anatomy of these lesions. Endovascular treatment with Onyx is a good alternative for spinal extradural AVF management.

Abstract:
Three-dimensional rotational digital subtraction (DS) angiography and DynaCT allow precise localization of intracranial arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) with fiducial markers that have helped in surgical planning. These techniques are particularly useful when the AVF is not evident on cross-sectional imaging. The authors demonstrate the utility of 3D DS angiography and DynaCT in the localization of intracranial AVFs in 3 cases. Their first case was a dural AVF with multiple arterial feeders from the left occipital artery that drained into the left transverse sinus. Blood flow to the left transverse sinus was first decreased by embolizing the branch arterial feeders with polyvinyl alcohol particles. Thereafter, 3D DS angiography enabled precise localization of the site for the bur hole creation with a fiducial to allow access for the transverse sinus in the second part of the procedure where definitive transvenous sinus embolization of the dural AVF with coils was performed. They also used 3D DS angiography and DynaCT with fiducials for precise localization of a superficial pial AVF (Case 2) and a tentorial AVF (Case 3) not visible on cross-sectional angiography. With the precise localization of the target lesion, the neurosurgeons were able to perform relatively small craniotomies, minimizing the cranial opening yet allowing the opening for full access to the lesion. By correlating 3D DS angiography/DynaCT with CT images, the neurosurgeon could use neuronavigation in cases of AVF not appreciated on cross-sectional imaging.

Abstract:
Abstract The article discusses the use of images from two Parisian books of hours on a Sinhalese ivory casket of the sixteenth century, which today is kept at the Museum für Asiatische Kunst in Berlin. Comparing the Berlin casket to a group of similar Sinhalese ivory boxes, the article argues for its being a gift of the declining Sinhalese dynasty of Kōṭṭe that was made for the Portuguese house of Aviz. Furthermore, the analysis of the alterations and recombination of the European models in this context allows a better understanding of the box as a product of cross-cultural negotiation. Merging both European and Sinhalese artistic traditions, the casket presents a creative expression of a Sinhalese-Christian identity that, while being in the process of forming itself, also addresses the contradictions between missionary promises of salvation and colonial violence.

Abstract:
Emperor Maximilian I spared no expense or eff ort to ensure that he would be remembered the way that he wanted to be remembered. Th roughout his reign he concentrated on his image, crafting it to suit his political and dynastic goals. He justifi ed his efforts by claiming that, “Whoever prepares no memorial for himself during his lifetime has none after his death, and that same person will be forgotten along with the sound of the bell that tolls his passing. And so the money I spend on my memorial is not lost; rather, to spare expense on my memorial is to suppress my future reputation. For what I do not produce toward my own memorial during my lifetime will not be celebrated after my death by you or anybody else.” A key aspect of the emperor's memorial was his patronage of and skill in astrology. The image of Maximilian as patron and student of astrology was one of his own making. In his autobiographical writings, Maximilian emphasized his efforts to learn and practice astrology. His personal secretary and adviser, Joseph Grünpeck, who worked on early draft s of the emperor's autobiography and wrote a biography of Maximilian, consistently portrayed the emperor as an avid and gift ed student of astrology. In the biography, which he dedicated to Emperor Charles V, Grünpeck recounted Maximilian's enjoyment in reading astrological and astronomical literature, especially Ptolemy. Not long after Maximilian died, Johannes Schöner praised the emperor for his efforts in astrology and numbered him among the most important patrons of astrology. Toward the end of the sixteenThcentury, Henry Ranzovius, in his history of great patrons of astrology, singled out Maximilian and labeled him a lover of the art.

Abstract:
Dobry doradca (Leal Conselheiro) to traktat dydaktyczny napisany przez króla Edwarda (port. Dom Duarte), władcę Portugalii z dynastii Avis (1391–1438).

The choice of the respective chronicles is due to the fact, that the two used the same object in his chronicles, King D. John's Avis dinasty, for this reason, the job uses the comparative analysis. Thus, different representations are within the same company, these are divided into social groups, according to the perpective of the investigated chronicler. Thus, the possible social representations will be studied, in order to find a consensus in the different groups formed in society, based on this, the work is an interdisciplinary reading with Social Psychology, each representation posses a core to be investigated and identified. The work also dialgue with the theory of interdependence between the individual and society Norbert Elias, as selected representations are linked to this interdependent relationship of individual/society. To build the objectives presented were studied, two medieval chronicles, which were aimed at memory production of Avis, they are: the Cr?nica de El-Rei D. Abstract:
This work aims at analyzing the Lopes trilogy of chronicles (1380? - 1460), namely the Chronicle of D. Pedro I, the Chronicle of D. Fernando and the Chronicle of D. João I, in order to understand the construction of images related to the exercise of royal power outlined by this chronicler. In addition to recording and organizing the history of his kingdom, Fernão Lopess project is to recover the memory of the Avis dynasty. The reading of the Lopes trilogy reveals the ways in which the chronicler chooses to enhance the creation of this model of dynasty, which serves as a mirror to his contemporary and future generations. We also understand that the representations of the \"state of king\" of each monarch presented in these narratives are essential to reveal how the chronicler perceives the different forms and ways of ruling the kingdom. These requirements or the lack of them justify and legitimize the royal power within the chroniclers prose. In this work, we propose to analyze the profiles of the three kings as built by the medieval chronicler Fernão Lopes in his three chronicles. We intend to analyze these chronicles as a whole, recognizing the meaning of each one as a contribution to the construction of the diachronic perspective in the chroniclers speech. In that way we attempt to identify the charge of intention in Lopess speech, which is built on images and symbols of power in each chapter of his chronicles.
