Vyas, Rushi J. "An embedded, wireless-energy-harvesting platform (E-WEHP) for powering sensors using existing, ambient, wireless signals present in the air." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/52291.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this research is to develop an embedded, wireless, energy-harvesting prototype (E-WEHP) that can power on and sustain embedded sensing functions using the power present in ambient wireless signals in urban areas. This research is part of a bigger effort towards greening RF circuits and applications in order to reduce their pollution foot-print. Pollution due to modern electronics is primarily caused by non-biodegradable packaging waste and batteries that form a big part of most electronics. Electronic waste can especially be a nuisance in RFID and wireless sensors that are mass-produced and widely-used in consumer items, buildings, industries, agriculture and transportation. The first part of this research effort addresses the issue of minimizing electronic packaging waste by characterizing and using biodegradable substrates such as Paper and Perfluoropolymer (PFA) as a dielectric material in RF circuits. Towards this goal, the first of its kind active wireless sensor modules made of biodegradable paper substrate using a clean and novel inkjet-printing technology is developed and successfully operated in the 900 MHz free ISM band. The second and third part of this research effort addresses the issue of battery waste by investigating the use of ambient solar and wireless radiation for powering RF and embedded electronics for wireless localization and sensing applications without the use of batteries. The second part of this work presents a unique solar-powered tag called SOLTAG that combines solar cells along with an RFID-type powering mechanism to implement a very low-cost, battery-less, semi-passive wireless-tag but with a much longer range than passive EPC-Gen2 RFID tags. A GPS-like, low-cost, vehicle-tracking system based on a received-signal-strength-indication method using SOLTAGs in vehicles and a wireless network of Mica-motes is successfully developed and tested with accuracy down to 1.62 meters The third and main part of this research work presents a novel embedded-wireless-energy-harvesting-prototype (E-WEHP) that can successfully power-on and sustain sensing and M2M peripherals in a 16-bit microcontroller using the power present in ambient, wireless, Digital-TV signals without the use of batteries. This work involves an in-depth characterization of OFDM signals used in Digital-TV broadcasts in Tokyo and Atlanta along with the design and development of the E-WEHP hardware and firmware that exploits the multi-carrier nature of such TV signals for powering itself at a range of over 6 km from the TV broadcast sources. This work opens up the possibility of pervasively powering sensor motes for applications such as environmental sensing, smart homes, structural health monitoring, security and internet of things without the environmental and logistical cost of periodic battery replacement and disposal.

Abstract:
The work presented in this thesis aims at easing the evaluation process of smartcards embedded software. On one hand, we set up a software environment dedicated to analyze the implementation resistance of cryptographic to power analysis attacks. This environment must be seen as a tool that facilitates a real attack by giving a way to find information leakages in an implementation. On the other hand, we focused on analyzing program written in AVR assembly language in order to check whether they are vulnerable to timing attacks. To achieve this goal we have developed a tool that makes possible the description of a path in the control flow of the program thanks to regular expressions. Those regular expressions will be interpreted by our tool in order to give the exact execution timing (expressed in clock cycles). Finally, we studied how to ease the global comprehension of a program written in C language in order to check whether security policies are well implemented. First, we provide graphical navigation assisants that helps to understand the progam being analyzed by giving information on variables and procedures. Then, we provide a way to check the security policies through the use of requests expressed with the CTL logic. This approach does not need prior modelisation of the program

Abstract:
This thesis aims to answer a number of basic questions about microcontroller development: • What’s the potential for writing more efficient program code and is it worth the effort? How could it be done? Could the presumed trade-off between code space and development time be overcome? • Which microcontroller hardware architecture should you choose? • Which IDE (development ecosystem) should you choose? This is an investigation of the above, using separate sets of incremental code changes (improvements) to a simple serial port communication test program. Two generations of Atmel 8-bit AVR microcontrollers (ATmega and ATxmega) and two conceptually different IDEs (BASCOM-AVR and Atmel Studio 6.1) are chosen for the comparison. The benefits of producing smaller and/or faster code is the ability to use smaller (cheaper) devices and reduce power consumption. A number of techniques for manual program optimization are used and presented, showing that it’s the developer skills and the IDE driver library concept and quality that mainly affect code quality and development time, rather than high code quality and low development time being mutually exclusive. The investigation shows that the complexity costs incurred by using memory-wise bigger and more powerful devices with more features and peripheral module instances are surprisingly big. This is mostly seen in the IV table space (many and advanced peripherals), ISR prologue and epilogue (memory size above 64k words), and program code size (configuration and initialization of peripherals). The 8-bit AVR limitation of having only three memory pointers is found to have consequences for the programming model, making it important to avoid keeping several concurrent memory pointers, so that the compiler doesn’t have to move register data around. This means that the ATxmega probably can’t reap the full benefit of its uniform peripheral module memory layout and the ensuing struct-based addressing model. The test results show that a mixed addressing model should be used for 8-bit AVR ATxmega, in which “static” (absolute) addressing is better at one (serial port) instance, at three or more the “structs and pointers” addressing is preferable, and at two it’s a draw. This fact is not dependent on the three pointer limitation, but is likely to be strengthened by it. As a mixed addressing model is necessary for efficient programming, it is clear that the driver library must reflect this, either via alternative implementations or by specifying “interfaces” that the (custom) driver must implement if abstraction to higher-level application code is desired. A GUI-based tool for driver code generation based on developer input is therefore suggested. The translation from peripheral instance number to base address so far used by BASCOM-AVR for ATxmega is expensive, which resulted in a suggestion for a HW-based look-up table that would generally reduce both code size and clock cycle count and possibly enable a common accessing model for ATmega, ATxmega, and ARM. In the IDE evaluation, both alternatives were very appreciated. BASCOM-AVR is found to be a fine productivityenhancement tool due to its large number of built-in commands for the most commonly used peripherals. Atmel Studio 6.1 suffers greatly in this area from its ill-favored ASF driver library. For developers familiar with the AVRs, the powerful avrgcc optimizing compiler and integrated debugger still make it worthwhile adapting application note code and datasheet information, at a significant development time penalty compared to BASCOM-AVR. Regarding ATmega vs. ATxmega, it was decided that both have its place, due to differences in feature sets and number of peripheral instances. ATxmega seems more competitively priced compared to ATmega, but incurs a complexity cost in terms of code size and clock cycles. When it’s a draw, ATmega should be chosen.

Abstract:
Απώτερος σκοπός του εγχειρήματος αυτού είναι η χρήση του συστήματος από φοιτητές στο πλαίσιο των μαθημάτων μικροϋπολογιστών και συγκεκριμένα να διευκολύνει την ανάπτυξη δικτυακών εφαρμογών με μικροελεγκτές.<br>At this diploma thesis a real-time network protocol was designed and implemented in order to interconnect a group of microcontrollers. Based at this protocol, a network bootloader was developed for AVR microcontrollers and a desktop application for the interface of the user with the network was developed. Ultimate goal of this work is to be used from students of microcomputer courses and specifically to facilitate the development of network applications with microcontrollers.

Abstract:
This thesis is based on the design and production of teaching kits with expansion modules which are based on the Atmel AVR microcontroller. Kit consists of a plate containing processes and basic power modules directly on the board and expansion modules "SIMAČ". "SIMAČ" modules are virtual elements that simulate the real elements and they are commonly used in industrial automation. Because of their cost they are integrated in extension kit as programmable modules. It also contains basic theoretical information about working with ATMEL AVR microcontrollers. Expansion modules with module development board and disc which will be loaded all the schemes, programs and technical documentation for individual districts will be attached to the thesis.
