Our system is built upon the basis of OSGi platform such that other family service modules can easily be ported and integrated with our system. In addition, our research developed a residents tracking system called COTS to characterize the situation of an entity on occupants in home environment. COTS can obtain contextual information from residents and help t

Database outsourcing is an emerging paradigm for data management in which data are stored in third-party servers. With the advance of cloud computing, database outsourcing has become popular and highly adopted. However, as a result, many technology challenges have arisen.<br>In this thesis, we study two problems with respect to the challenges, and propose solutions for each problem with the consideration of access patterns. The first problem is raised from theviewpoint of service providers. We study the problem of data allocation in scalable distributed database systems for achieving the high

The cost and space of server management can be reduced significantly if the physical resources are allocated wisely. The Xen Project is a well-know virtualization platform created by Keir Fraser and Ian Pratt. In this thesis, we shall target the physical resources allocation problem for xen virtualization systems. In particular, we are interested in dynamic CPU scheduling for virtual machines such that the perf

With the current proliferation of sensor equipped mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, location aware services are expanding beyond the mere efficiency and work related needs of users, evolving in order to incorporate fun, culture and the social life of users. Today people on the move have more and more connectivity and are expected to be able to communicate with their usual and familiar social networks. That means communications not only with their peers and colleagues, friends and family but also with unknown people that might share their interests, curiosities or hap

In addition, it should ensure appropriate responses to context change in the home environment. To achieve these objectives, this paper proposes a Context Aware Service Platform (CASP) with reasoning mechanism for providing a personalized smart home. This paper designs a rule-based template which defines the relation between environment context and service. Traditionally, disaster warning systems provide general information of disaster events and broadcast to all people. This simple approach adopts one-way communication model in which information is always transferred in a single direction from server-side to client-side. However, for better support of disaster warning and rescue, the system is supposed to leverage informative content by producing user-context dependent information. That means th

With the ever-growing popularity of GPS-enabled smartphones available on the market, we observe a promising trend of incorporating location awareness into smartphone applications (APP). In this thesis, we propose and implement a location-aware calendar reminder (LACR) APP based on the Android platform.
