Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper in information literacy assessment is to explore how library training can promote electronic resource usage. Increasing the usage of electronic resources is an issue of concern for many libraries all over the world. Several studies stress the importance of information literacy and instruction to increase the usage. Design/methodology/approach The present article presents the results of implementing training programmes to increase the use of the e-library. Findings Training sessions increase the usage of library e-resources significantly; however, the effect seems to be short-lived and training sessions alone may not increase the overall long-term usage. Originality/value The present paper presents a study of training sessions as means to increase awareness and usage of library e-resources. Implications for the planning of training are discussed.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop and validate a scale involving the factors affecting usage of e-resources. Design/methodology/approach The present study identifies five factors affecting the usage of e-resources: training modes, awareness, influencers, utilitarian benefits, and experiential and hedonic benefits. To generate measurement items, two focus group discussions were carried out which resulted in 20 items. To empirically ensure reliability and validity of scale, data were collected from 347 postgraduate students actively using e-resources. To test reliability of scale, internal consistency reliability and construct reliability were examined. The construct validity of scale (which includes convergent validity and discriminant validity) was verified through confirmatory factor analysis using structure equation modeling. Findings Findings of the study present a statistically reliable and valid scale consisting of five factors and 18 items. Originality/value The present study is one of the distinctive studies on introducing a scale employing factors affecting usage of e-resources.

Abstract:
Information technology (IT) has thrown a new challenge to the libraries. The technology has shown a great impact on the services of the libraries. Libraries use IT for better services and satisfying diverse user needs. Libraries have transformed into digital and virtual libraries where books, journals, and magazines have changed into e-books, e-journals, and e-zines. This has increased the global dissemination of information. Electronic resources (e-resources) are easily accessible in the remote areas. The e-resources solve storage problems and control the flood of information. Print sources are being digitized. There is a great need to study the use of e-resources and investigate the factors that are a hindrance to their use. The present study is an attempt to examine the usage of electronic resources at IIT Delhi. The study confirmed that respondents were aware of the e-resources and various types of e-resources, e-database, and e-journals. The study recommended the improvement in the access facilities with high internet speed and subscription to more e-resources.

Machado, Guilherme Medeiros.

Abstract:
University campus are environments composed of resources and people who use them. One of the main resources used by a campus community are learning objects. Such objects are abundantly even scattered in the environment or concentrated in one location. However the abundance of such objects makes a person feel cognitively tired when having to analyze various objects and select just a few of them. This cognitive fatigue eventually leads the person to choose a set of learning objects that do not meet their needs and interests in the best possible way. Computing has evolved from large mainframe to small computers scattered in an environment. Today it is possible the existence of pervasive environments where computational resources are always present and acting in a manner invisible to the user. Such environments make it possible to monitor user activities, providing contextual information that can be used to help select the best resources (e.g. learning objects, restaurants, classrooms) to a particular person. The location is a contextual information of great importance in the selection of such resources. Such information can be easily obtained through the GPS signal from a mobile device and used with the user’s interests to recommend the nearby resources that best attend his needs and interests. In this context, this work describes an approach to recommend physical or virtual learning objects that are related to buildings near the user’s current location. To accomplish such a task we described a recommender system that uses the location information, obtained through the user's mobile device, combined with information from the user’s profile, learning objects related to buildings and technological information from the device to instantiate an ontological context model. Once the model is instantiated we used semantic rules, written in the form of antecedent and consequent, to make a match between the user’s interests and the knowledge domain of the learning object in order filter the user’s nearby objects. With such recommended objects, the system presents them in an adaptive interface that shows both the object and the user location. To validate the presented approach we developed a case study where the recommendation semantic rules are executed on the developed ontological model. The income generated by such rules is a set of pairs (user, recommended learning object) and proves the validity of the approach.

Abstract:
Singapore and the river basins of Piracicaba, Capivari and Jundiaí rivers (PCJ), Brazil, have populations of about 5.5 million people, high rates of urbanization and industrialization and critical situations in terms of water availability. The objective of this research is to investigate and to compare water management, governance and usage in the main island of Singapore and the PCJ river basins, based on data collected by field work, bibliographic and documentary research and semi-structured interviews with citizens, professionals and researchers from both countries. In Singapore, there were 52 interviews in total, 33 citizens, 5 professionals, 6 researchers and 8 Brazilians. In the PCJ river basins, 45 interviews were conducted, 27 citizens, 8 professionals, 7 researchers and 3 Singaporeans. Similarities were perceived in the domestic water usage of both contexts, as the emphasis on its economic value, easy and convenient access. There is evidence of a low influence of cultural differences of different ethnic groups in the level of water consumption, which tends to be more influenced by socioeconomic conditions, domestic infrastructure, lifestyles and family and individual habits. In the PCJ river basins, there is a strong presence of a culture of abundance. The comparison of the two cases is remarkable. On the one hand, a centralized and nonparticipative management style that generated good results in a relatively short period of time, and, on the other hand, a decentralized and participative management style which is highly evaluated in the national context, but it also has a number of shortcomings, faults and weaknesses. The case study reinforces the idea that adversities can be turned into advantages, such as in Singapore, and environmentally favorable conditions can be turned into disadvantages, such as in the PCJ Basins. It was evident that the main factor contributing to the success of the water management in Singapore was the government. Lee Kuan Yew is mentioned as the mentor of Singapore\'s overall development policies, including water management. He sought to reconcile economic development and environmental protection, to clean up all the rivers of the island and to promote the use of alternative sources of water to increase water autonomy in the country. However, the authoritarian government and its measures are questionable from a democratic point of view. Despite the PCJ river basins are among the most advanced in Brazil in terms of implementation of the Law 9433/97, its management has not generated all the expected economic, social and environmental benefits and there are still governance gaps that hamper the effective implementation of an effective water management. It is necessary to overcome the vision of water as an abundant and unlimited resource, the contradiction between environmental protection and economic growth, the current political structure, corruption problems, lack of political will, shortcomings in urban development and the shortage of adequate infrastructure.

Abstract:
The growing concern about the environmental questions nowadays, can be understood as a nebulousness tendency, a result of a very rich expression of meaning and more convenient to us, who live without the historical distance, because it makes less definite under a future perspective, such expression is identified as globalization. Globalization conducts to a propagandist nature, towards preservation and not the conservation of the bio-geo-physics of the environment, that refers specially in this work about the water in rivers. The propagandist nature of the environmental questions, make us believe that most of the environment impacts in a flow of water, are due to water usage and mainly when this usage is navigation. The dispute of the environmental impact, due to the usage of water to navigation, is not a exhausted subject when talking only about the Hydric Resources Management, it is beyond, it has its origin at the River Basin and is discussed at the River Basin Management. In this theses it will be possible to notice that among the several means of transportation, the fluvial shipping is the less impactant because even the mean is natural and not anthropogenic like in other means. The necessity of hydrographic basin can be understood in some situations as a part of a Environmental Impacts Mitigation Program, not only in the river but in the river basin, that by the no consideration or because it does not exist a director plan, they suffered a disordered occupation, resulting in several environmental impacts. The chapters presented here are all interconnected, because we understand that only the simultaneous study will allow us to get the decrease of impacts at the river basin, as well as the decrease the environmental impact when performing the hydrographic basin.

Water is an essential component of the environment and part of life, one of the most important natural resources. Your monitoring by physical-chemical analysis provides grant ace environmental protection policies and decision-making regarding environmental management actions. Thus, due to the paucity of data related to continuous monitoring water quality in the lower São Francisco this work aimed to evaluate the water quality and social aspects related to the use of water resources in the basin of the São Francisco river and its tributaries Jacaré rivers and Betume and promote environmental education through awareness activities and awareness of the environmental problems experienced in this region. For physical-chemical analysis of water we used a Ecokit measuring water quality which evaluates the concentrations of the variables measured by the Colorimetric method. Limnological parameters analyzed in this study were pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, phosphate and turbidity. To analyze the perception was applied one after interview questionnaire composed of 16 questions of which eight were open six closed and two semi-open. What outreach activities were offered lectures and training with Ecokit. The results of water quality indicate that a significant amount of the parameters analyzed in the rivers was outside the limit set by CONAMA resolution 357/2005 interfering with the quality of its waters. For this study, most of the points analyzed are located close to areas of sewage releases, in view of this, it is observed that the external environment is contributing to the reduction of water quality of these water bodies. For environmental awareness, the results indicate that the individuals interviewed have full awareness that comes from being and environmental problems which are faced by the São Francisco river and the need to implement a continuous monitoring of the water quality of the river. It was noted that awareness activities further contributed to the understanding of the relationship of these respondents with water.

Abstract:
Given the controversial discussions about the proposed changes to the Brazilian Forest Code (CFB) and the harmful consequences that they can bring to the future of humanity and the planet, it was thought to observe the environmental ethics would be taken into account before these proposals change, since it arose from the need to discuss ethics with regard to the environment, based on the concern and the ecological sensitivity in response to a mentality predatory nature. The Brazilian Forest Code is one of the strictest in the world. Emerged as an initiative for environmental protection, is now the target of many controversies occasioned by the Proposed Substitute Bill No. 1876/99, by Deputy Aldo Rebelo. Given the environmental crisis caused by the spread of globalization and population growth as well as growing consumerism, it is necessary to examine these proposals within view of the recent Environmental Ethics, which has as its object of study the sustainable relationship between man and the environment . The issues addressed in this work required a reflective ethical approach and the use of benchmarks, which would support the theoretical basis needed for research, enabling the formation of critical thinking and a possible awareness of the need for preservation and wise use of natural resources.

Abstract:
The main objective of the present study is to understand how residents, local workers and users from a urban water basin landscape are aware of the water that surrounds them. The study area comprises the water collection basin Barragem Mãe D'água, located in the Metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil (RMPA), in the limits of the cities of Porto Alegre and Viamão, RS, Brazil. Our study also aims at attempting to determine whether those people are aware of the fact that the water they use in their homes, in different daily activities, is the same that runs in the water flows close to their houses. Our hypothesis is that the awareness level as to environmental issues, such as local landscape, water, and water cycles, are affected by culture, socioeconomic conditions and education level. The study is based on data from the IQA (Water Quality Index) from three different years (1990/91, 2002 and 2007), when water was collected to have its quality assessed in three different points of the basin. In parallel, we carried out a study about the urbanization process in the area, through Remote Sensing Imaging and photographs of sampling points, dwellings and infra-structure. Focus was given to environmental conditions such as that of water flows. In order to understand and determine the people's awareness level as to the urban landscape and water present in the area, a questionnaire was created and applied following the semi-structured interview model from Social Sciences. After such data were collected, processed and analyzed, we tested the hypothesis that culture, socioeconomic conditions and education level affect people's awareness, interfering or mitigating their critical point of view as to environmental issues, as those associated to water in the landscape. Results of the present study will be spatialized over a map that comprises the interviewee's preferred landscapes, impacts and intervention plans. The main goal is to qualify the urban space, particularly those areas where water is present.

This study was conducted between November 2011 and January 2012 and deals with the environmental perception of residents, fishermen, tourists and workers linked to tourism services in the city of Baía da Traição-PB; considering anthropocentric, ecocentric and apathy issues, related to different usages (and motivations) of reef environment, saving water and garbage disposal. Adopts perspectives linked to themes as management, development versus environmental preservation and education. Also describes the socioeconomic profile of each class. The main objective is to meet environmental perception of social actors involved and get grant for construction of a shared sustainable management plan. For this to realize, we interviewed 967 people randomly and 50.6% of them was male and 49.4% was female, during the high season (November 2011 to January 2012). The results show that the most representative class of individuals have between 21 and 30 years, with schooling corresponding to the high school and monthly income around 1 minimum wage. In all categories, most respondents said the coastal reefs from the city are important because they carry protection from high tides, but agree with tourism access to the environment. Residents and workers attend the reef environment for reasons such as sports and contemplation. In general, respondents think that environmental management should be a responsibility of all those who use the environment; declared conserve water in their household activities because they think it s better to future generations, but do not separate the waste produced at home mainly because there is no selective collection in where they live. Do not agree that tourism development is more important than the preservation of the environment, and almost unanimously consider environmental education as an important tool for environmental preservation and improving the quality of people s life. Residents and workers established an ecocentric relationship with the environment as fishermen and tourists are anthropocentric. The information obtained in this study provides indicatives that enable adoption of Public Policies, based on the construction of an environmental management plan which considers environmental resources usage in a sustainable manner and quality of life.

Abstract:
During the 21st century, electronic resources have become an important component in every sector of society and the academic sector is no exception. Academic libraries worldwide have adopted the technologies involved in electronic resources, with some replacing their traditional collections with e-resources, which are more accessible by users. This study was conducted at the University of South Africa (Unisa) and was aimed at investigating the levels of awareness and usage of e-resources by third-year students in the School of Arts. The study used the descriptive survey study design, which is quantitative in approach. The target population comprised of 5 377 third-year students enrolled in the seven departments in the School of Arts and a proportional sample of 360 students was drawn from the population by using stratified random sampling. Library staff was also included in the study, in order to determine students’ usage patterns of e-resources and to establish initiatives available at the Unisa Library to increase awareness and use of e-resources. Online questionnaires distributed via Survey Monkey were used as the data collection instrument. The study established that the Unisa Library subscribes to a wide range of e-resources and has a number of initiatives in place to encourage the awareness and usage of these resources. However, 50, 3% of the student respondents were unaware of the availability of Unisa e-resources. The study also established that the majority of students use e-resources for study and research and that, although they have basic information and communication technologies (ICTs) skills, the majority of students lack advanced information search and retrieval skills, which are required to utilise e-resources properly. The four main barriers that prevent students from accessing and using e-resources were the cost of access to the internet, unavailability of relevant literature for studies, lack of time to do online searches and preference for information freely available on the internet. To encourage increased awareness and use of e-resources, the study recommend the development of an e-resources marketing strategy, the introduction of an information literacy module for all first-year students, the provision of infrastructure and technologies for access, development of specialised library assistance services, balancing of the electronic library collections across different subjects, tutors including more e-resources references in study guides and tutorial letters and hiring of more library staff. The study concludes that the Unisa Library has a wide variety of electronic library resources and services needed in academic institutions, but awareness and usage of the resources is quite low, due to several factors highlighted in the study. Therefore, the Library should step forward and ensure that the resources are fully utilised by following the recommendations suggested in the study.

Verschoor, Arie Stefan. "A new view on innovation : researching the usage of competitor´s resources to increase the likelihood of adoption in the electric vehicle industry." Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.14/25411.

Full text
Abstract:
The car industry is facing a lot of changes, especially when it comes to electric vehicles. Although the majority of consumers is aware of electric vehicles, personal transportation by electric vehicles is only 0.2%. Due to the nature of barriers such as global infrastructure, global exposure and variety of models it is extremely difficult for companies to single-handedly overcome these barriers. Therefore, this thesis proposes a new strategy to overcome such barriers. Once an innovation leader innovates to fast and offers products that are not being accepted due to the current market conditions, using the resources of other competitors could be an effective way to evolve the market into a state where the likelihood of consumer adoption is increased. By using an empirical study, this thesis aims to explore the impact of increased global infrastructure, increased average range and increased exposure in order to enhance the likelihood of electric vehicle adoption. These measures are all directly related to an increase in market engagement by competitors. The results of the study show that all consequences of increased market engagement by competitors lead to a higher likelihood to adopt. The effect of an innovation leader sharing knowledge could indeed have a positive effect on the available market.

Abstract:
Literary education and language education are connected by a relationship of mutual exchange. On the one hand, without the mastery of appropriate language skills it is impossible to grasp the complexity of literary works. On the other, improving language competence is one of the multiple aims of literary education. Moreover, considering the current multicultural dimension of the Italian school system, teaching literature from an intercultural perspective provides an opportunity to foster the development of relational skills while discussing the meaning of the works. In this scenario, we explore the state of the art of literary education and the teaching of literature in Italy and we consider their implications with language education, intercultural education, and intercultural communication. Furthermore, we present both a model of literary and intercultural communicative competence and a hermeneutic and relational method, also aimed at improving language acquisition and promoting intercultural awareness. In our view, literary and intercultural communicative competence makes it possible to communicate effectively in events where the language is spoken in order to understand literary texts, to identify the original meanings, to discuss their significance from the students’ current perspective, and to formulate critical judgements. The aim of the volume is to offer content and methodological resources for the teaching of literature that can impact positively on the development of language and relational skills. Thus, we draw up some guidelines aimed at increasing students’ motivation for studying the works, fostering their active participation and allowing literature to preserve its educational function.

Abstract:
Significant developmental changes in adolescence typically lead to increased risky behavior, including substance use. Survey data indicated that adolescent alcohol and drug use has declined in recent years, with the exception of marijuana use, which has remained consistent, and e-cigarette use, which is on the rise. This chapter provides a summary of prevalence rates, trends, and maladaptive consequences of adolescent substance use. Etiological models of adolescent substance use are discussed, including dual-process and biopsychosocial models. Current literature on evidence-based screening, comprehensive assessment, and treatment is also reviewed. Despite the recent advances made regarding our ability to screen, assess, diagnose, and treat adolescent substance use, a significant treatment gap persists, which has significant individual and public health impacts. This chapter therefore concludes with a call for research that aims to increase patient awareness of effective treatment via strategies such as technology-delivered assessment and intervention and usage of direct-to-consumer marketing.

Abstract:
The internet has emerged as an important medium for terrorists. Two key trends can be discerned from cyberterrorism: the democratization of communications driven by user generated content on the internet, and modern terrorists’ growing awareness of the internet’s potential for their purposes. The internet has become a favorite tool of the terrorists because of the many advantages it provides, such as easy access; little or no regulation, censorship, or other forms of government control; potentially huge audiences spread throughout the world; anonymity of communication; fast flow of information; interactivity; inexpensive development and maintenance of a Web presence; a multimedia environment; and the ability to influence coverage in the traditional mass media. These advantages make the network of computer-mediated communication ideal for terrorists-as-communicators. Terrorist groups of all sizes maintain their own websites to spread propaganda, raise funds and launder money, recruit and train members, communicate and conspire, plan and launch attacks. They also rely on e-mail, chatrooms, e-groups, forums, virtual message boards, and resources like YouTube, Facebook, and Google Earth. Fighting online terrorism raises the issue of countermeasures and their cost. The virtual war between terrorists and counterterrorism forces and agencies is certainly a vital, dynamic, and ferocious one. It is imperative that we become better informed about the uses to which terrorists put the internet and better able to monitor their activities. Second, we must defend our societies better against terrorism without undermining the very qualities and values that make our societies worth defending.

City waterways are a valuable part of our cultural heritage. Over the years the usage has changed from business to pleasure. Regent’s Canal, cutting across north central London since 1820, has a rich social and industrial history. Much of this history has been and is being captured via photographs. Many of these are being lost due to limited museum resources and disparate collections. This paper reports on phase one of a fifteen-month exploratory research project. The research aims to explore ways of aiding image capture, selection, storage and retrieval. We hope to link with researchers elsewhere, especially in Italy.

AbstractThe Human Brain Project (HBP) (https://humanbrainproject.eu/) is a large-scale flagship project funded by the European Commission with the goal of establishing a research infrastructure for brain science. This research infrastructure is currently being realised and will be called EBRAINS (https://ebrains.eu/). The wide ranging EBRAINS services for the brain research communities require diverse access, processing and storage capabilities. As a result, it will strongly rely on e-infrastructure services. The HBP led to the creation of Fenix (https://fenix-ri.eu/), a collaboration of five European supercomputing centres, who are providing a set of federated e-infrastructure services to EBRAINS. The Fenix architecture has been designed to uniquely address the need for a wide spectrum of services, from high performance computing (HPC) to on-demand cloud technologies to identity and access federation, for facilitating ease of access and usage of distributed e-infrastructure resources. In this article we describe the underlying concepts for an audience of computational science end-users and developers of domain-specific applications, workflows and platforms services. To exemplify the use of Fenix, we will discuss selected use cases demonstrating how brain researchers can use the offered infrastructure services and describe how access to these resources can be obtained.

Abstract:
How can we reduce economic violence? Can financial literacy and education enhance economic wellbeing? The present paper reports the results of a research conducted by ALTIS – Università Cattolica and Global Thinking Foundation for the evaluation of changes, improvements and consequences produced by the educational course in financial literacy ‘Donne al quadrato’, provided by the Foundation among the policies against economic violence implementation. In this study, impacts’ measurement refers to conceptual framework of financial wellbeing, a composite notion constructed of objective and subjective dimensions related to people’s financial behaviour. The expression ‘Financial Wellbeing’ highlights how economic issues are inextricably bound to individual and social wellness. Helping people enhancing their own financial wellbeing – in a broad sense – should then be the very first purpose of economic education activity. In the present research, financial wellbeing has been measured by the implementation of a synthetic index, based on studies of World Bank and University of Bristol. The index is intended to measure people’s self-sufficiency and independence about their financial situation, resources and capabilities. The indicator takes into account both micro and macro features, being the first ones specific of the sample analysed and latter territorial context variables employed for the removal of the macroeconomic changes affecting the entire population from the specific changes proceeding from the training. The trial, involving different Italian regions, has been fulfilled by the administration of a tailoredmade survey pre and post the “Donne al Quadrato” course, during academic year 2019/2020, in order to register the change occurred in the respondents’ perception of their knowledge, behaviour, personality and aptitudes. The results of the experimentation demonstrated that financial education could engender the modification not only of knowledge but also of awareness and proficiency in financial behaviours, as well as the increase of course participants’ financial wellbeing.

Abstract:
The contribution of ophthalmologists is inevitable for visually challenged patient care and to eradicate unnecessary blindness in this society. Other than the academic focus of the medical students, the importance of continuing medical education (CME) for doctors in all disciplines, including ophthalmology, is a well-known factor to enhance their day-to-day clinical practices. The role of electronic and online resources in academic curriculum of medicine and CME is acceptable and inexorable among the user community worldwide. In the last several years, many research studies have focused on how people use electronic resources or on their feelings about electronic and online resources in various fields. In this study, the researcher analyzed the electronic resources usage among the ophthalmologists which indirectly supports their day-to-day clinical practices and serves the society against blindness. The results of the study show that the respondents have an average level of e-resources usage skills, particularly on awareness about many available e-resources.

Abstract:
The penetration of the Internet and opportunities involving information and communication technologies (ICTs) have occurred at an escalating rate within the private sector. This has caused governments and public sector organisations around the globe to become aware of their potential and consequently utilise them; thereby triggering investments in e-services (Choudrie et al., 2004a). However, the e-services offered by governments are much more than simple automation. E-services are meant to dramatically improve all areas of government activities: from democratic participation using online voting to improving the efficiency of citizen interactions with the government by providing online government services (Barc & Cordella 2004).Other countries around the globe are undertaking various e-government measures. Similar to them, the United Kingdom (UK) government is also undertaking steps that ensure it is progressing in accordance with these countries. For this purpose, the introduction and experiences of utilising a number of government services that are offered electronically via the ‘Government Gateway’ in the UK is pertinent. These e-government services include council tax bills and accounts, housing benefits, child benefit claims, carer’s allowance, jobs online, state pension forecasts, self assessment of tax and tax credits, landweb direct, and the national blood services (Government Gateway, 2004). This is in contrast to the traditional method, whereby access to government services was undertaken by the citizens visiting ‘physical, brick foundation’ locations. Therefore this novel phenomenon offers a great amount of convenience and ease for citizens’ use (Government Gateway, 2004). However, it is not known whether the citizens of the UK are aware of such services. Further, questions are still emerging concerning whether the citizens are actually adopting the newly offered services. Therefore the initial aim of this chapter is to examine citizens’ awareness and adoption of e-government initiatives, specifically the Government Gateway in the United Kingdom. Since these services have been recently introduced, an investigation is needed to study if the demographic characteristics and home Internet access are affecting the awareness and adoption of these services. Therefore the second aim of this chapter is to examine the affect of the citizens’ demographic characteristics and home Internet access on the awareness and adoption of e-government services. To fulfill these aims, this study undertook an empirical examination of the awareness and adoption of the Government Gateway amongst UK citizens. This research offers a contribution to various stakeholders including the government agencies who could require a distinction to be drawn between the adopters and non-adopters of e-government services. That is, from the results of this research the government agencies could better understand in a simpler and detailed manner, the problem of low adoption. This could allow the formulation of a strategy that promotes awareness and diffusion. The chapter begins with a brief discussion of research undertaken on the citizens’ adoption of e-government services and a brief overview of the Government Gateway and its purpose. The findings are then presented and discussed. Finally, a conclusion to the research is provided. It is important to mention that the research methodology for this chapter is already presented and discussed in previous chapters. Therefore, this chapter does not include research methodology and only presents empirical data in the form of tables.

Abstract:
This chapter aims to discuss the potential of digital libraries to offer unparalleled resources for supporting open distance e-learning (ODeL). This chapter addresses and discusses such features as what is meant by ODeL and how it can be supported by the library and the functionality of the digital library, and how ODeL resources are included and organised in the digital library environment. The chapter explores the advantages of digital libraries for ODeL and the types of learning that can be supported by digital libraries. There is surely an interest in the usage of electronic resources for teaching, learning, and research, but this appears to be matched by a lack of awareness of how best to assimilate these resources into ODeL. The chapter provides valuable insight into the role and influence of digital libraries and e-resources on ODeL.

Abstract:
Operating under duty-cycle mode allows wireless sensor networks to prolong their lifetime. However, this working pattern, with the temporary unavailability of nodes, brings challenges to the network design, mainly for a fundamental service like flooding. The challenging task is to authorize sensors to adopt a duty-cycle mode without inflicting any negative impact on the network performances. Context-awareness offers to sensors the ability to adapt their functional behavior according to many contexts in order to cope with network dynamics. In this context, the authors propose an Enhanced-Efficient Context-Aware Multi-hop Broadcast (E-ECAB) protocol, which relies on multi contextual information to optimize resources usage and satisfy the application requirements in a duty-cycled environment. The authors proved that only one transmission is required to achieve the broadcast operation in almost all situations. Simulation results show that E-ECAB achieves a significant improvement compared to previous work in terms of throughput and end-to-end delay without sacrificing energy efficiency.

Abstract:
Energy is an effective economic power which can provide people with their basic necessities such as health, education, accommodation and protection. Increasing energy efficiency depends on development of the ability of energy sources with the combination of minimum posible cost, minimum risk and environment friendly facilities. Small and Medium Sized Entrerprises (SME) those can reflect this productivity of environment friendly energy to their production can be the cornerstone of social and economic development which is the determining economic factor in the countries’ social and economic development process. It is obvious that one of the main inputs of economic and social development is energy and providing it by using alternative sources is one of the most important parameters of sustainable development. Intense usage of fossil fuels causes a dependent condition in which SME’s cannot afford their energy demands totally by their own resources. As a result of an awareness research about alternative energy sources that will increase SME’s competitive capacity and sectoral tendency towards green energy sources, it is seen that consciousness of alternative energy and trends towards renewable energy resources are not strong enough. It is also identified that their level of awareness about how much their efficiency might be affected as a result of using new energy resources is rather low. Shortly in the frame of Vision 2023, recognising the main alternative energy resources of Turkey, it aims to identify the effects of tendency of SME’s towards alternative energy resources on their productivity.

Abstract:
[This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2019 issue of the Interdisciplinary Journal of E-Skills and Lifelong Learning, Volume 15.] Aim/Purpose: Following the widespread use of social networking applications (SNAs) by children, adolescents, and young adults, this paper sought to examine the usage habits, sharing, and dangers involved from the perspective of the children, adolescents, and young adults. The research question was: What are the usage habits, sharing, drawbacks, and dangers of using SNAs from the perspective of children, adolescents, and young adults? Background: Safety has become a major issue and relates to a range of activities including online privacy, cyberbullying, exposure to violent content, exposure to content that foments exclusion and hatred, contact with strangers online, and coarse language. The present study examined the use of social networking applications (SNAs) by children, adolescents, and young adults, from their point of view. Methodology: This is a mixed-method study; 551participants from Israel completed questionnaires, and 110 respondents were also interviewed. Contribution: The study sought to examine from their point of view (a) characteristics of SNA usage; (b) the e-safety of SNA; (c) gender differences between age groups; (d) habits of use; (e) hazards and solutions; and (f) sharing with parents and parental control. Findings: Most respondents stated that cyberbullying (such as shaming) happens mainly between members of the group and it is not carried out by strangers. The study found that children’s awareness of the connection between failures of communication in the SNAs and quarrels and disputes was lower than that of adolescents and young adults. It was found that more children than adolescents and young adults believe that monitoring and external control can prevent the dangers inherent in SNAs, and that the awareness of personal responsibility increases with age. The SNAs have intensified the phenomenon of shaming, but the phenomenon is accurately documented in SNAs, unlike in face-to-face communication. Therefore, today more than ever, it is possible and necessary to deal with shaming, both in face-to-face and in SNA communication. Recommendations for Practitioners: Efforts should be made to resolve the issue of shaming among members of the group and to explain the importance of preserving human dignity and privacy. The Internet in general and SNAs in particular are an integral part of children’s and adolescents’ life environment, so it can be said that the SNAs are part of the problem because they augment shaming. But they can also be part of the solution, because interactions are accurately documented, unlike in face-to-face communication, where it is more difficult to examine events, to remember exactly what has been said, to point out cause and effect, etc. Therefore, more than ever before, today it is possible and necessary to deal with shaming both in face-to-face and in the SNA communication, because from the point of view of youngsters, this is their natural environment, which includes smart phones, SNAs, etc. Recommendations for Researchers: The study recommends incorporating in future studies individual case studies and allowing participants to express how they perceive complex e-Safety situa-tions in the use of social networking apps. Impact on Society: Today more than ever, it is possible and necessary to deal with shaming, both in face-to-face and in SNA communication. Future Research: The study was unable to find significant differences between age groups. Fur-ther research may shed light on the subject.

Abstract:
Traditionally, water is used in thermal power plant for heat rejection processes such as in the steam condenser for use in a Rankine cycle. Typically, research has shown that approximately 2 litres of water are required to generate 1 kWh of electricity on a wet-cooling system; which on a bigger scale could translated to more than 11000000 m3 per year of make-up water for a 600 MWe coal-fired plant. The ever-increasing cost of water resources as well as the water resource scarcity have paved a path to dry-cooling systems which alternatively provide a significant cooling potential. However, dry-cooling systems performance are generally driven by the atmospheric conditions which at time do not meet the desired cooling temperatures resulting in significant drop in their performance. Recent developments in cooling technology suggest that hybrid systems (dry-wet) be used to insure good and manageable performances while maintaining the cost of operation at admissible range. In light of the recent draught experienced in South Africa, attention was drawn to evaluation of deluged systems performance as well as water consumption to increase the public awareness in the field. In this study, a deluged bundle was used to experimentally determine the cooling performance characteristic as well as water consumption for performance management. The above is then considered on a bigger scale to in order to open floor for further discussion on future strategies in term of the South African policy on water usage.

Abstract:
Increasing amount of CO2 emissions and global warming is one of the hottest topics of world’s agenda. At the same time there exists a public awareness about this important chapter. A lot of researcher proved that in order to live in a sustainable world, necessary regulations should be done and CO2 emissions should be reduced immediately. For this study our aim is to decompose the CO2 emissions of the world’s new super powers, China and India, over 1980-2010. In order to see the accelerating and decelerating factors for CO2 emissions, the Refined Laspeyres Index used as a method. Consistent data gathered from the official web sites of the World Bank and United Nations. Five main sectors, agriculture, manufacturing, construction, transportation and other services are used. Four different impacts, scale effect, composition effect, energy intensity effect and carbon intensity effect have been discussed to see the increasing or decreasing factors of CO2 emissions. The results were interesting. The dominant impacts were the scale effect and energy intensity effect. The minor impacts were composition effect and carbon intensity effect. Fuel switching, efficient energy use and increasing usage of renewable resources are efficient tools to reduce the emissions.

Brophy, Kenny, and Alison Sheridan, eds. Neolithic Scotland: ScARF Panel Report. Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, June 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.9750/scarf.06.2012.196.

Full text
Abstract:
The main recommendations of the Panel report can be summarised as follows: The Overall Picture: more needs to be understood about the process of acculturation of indigenous communities; about the Atlantic, Breton strand of Neolithisation; about the ‘how and why’ of the spread of Grooved Ware use and its associated practices and traditions; and about reactions to Continental Beaker novelties which appeared from the 25th century. The Detailed Picture: Our understanding of developments in different parts of Scotland is very uneven, with Shetland and the north-west mainland being in particular need of targeted research. Also, here and elsewhere in Scotland, the chronology of developments needs to be clarified, especially as regards developments in the Hebrides. Lifeways and Lifestyles: Research needs to be directed towards filling the substantial gaps in our understanding of: i) subsistence strategies; ii) landscape use (including issues of population size and distribution); iii) environmental change and its consequences – and in particular issues of sea level rise, peat formation and woodland regeneration; and iv) the nature and organisation of the places where people lived; and to track changes over time in all of these. Material Culture and Use of Resources: In addition to fine-tuning our characterisation of material culture and resource use (and its changes over the course of the Neolithic), we need to apply a wider range of analytical approaches in order to discover more about manufacture and use. Some basic questions still need to be addressed (e.g. the chronology of felsite use in Shetland; what kind of pottery was in use, c 3000–2500, in areas where Grooved Ware was not used, etc.) and are outlined in the relevant section of the document. Our knowledge of organic artefacts is very limited, so research in waterlogged contexts is desirable. Identity, Society, Belief Systems: Basic questions about the organisation of society need to be addressed: are we dealing with communities that started out as egalitarian, but (in some regions) became socially differentiated? Can we identify acculturated indigenous people? How much mobility, and what kind of mobility, was there at different times during the Neolithic? And our chronology of certain monument types and key sites (including the Ring of Brodgar, despite its recent excavation) requires to be clarified, especially since we now know that certain types of monument (including Clava cairns) were not built during the Neolithic. The way in which certain types of site (e.g. large palisaded enclosures) were used remains to be clarified. Research and methodological issues: There is still much ignorance of the results of past and current research, so more effective means of dissemination are required. Basic inventory information (e.g. the Scottish Human Remains Database) needs to be compiled, and Canmore and museum database information needs to be updated and expanded – and, where not already available online, placed online, preferably with a Scottish Neolithic e-hub that directs the enquirer to all the available sources of information. The Historic Scotland on-line radiocarbon date inventory needs to be resurrected and kept up to date. Under-used resources, including the rich aerial photography archive in the NMRS, need to have their potential fully exploited. Multi-disciplinary, collaborative research (and the application of GIS modelling to spatial data in order to process the results) is vital if we are to escape from the current ‘silo’ approach and address key research questions from a range of perspectives; and awareness of relevant research outside Scotland is essential if we are to avoid reinventing the wheel. Our perspective needs to encompass multi-scale approaches, so that ScARF Neolithic Panel Report iv developments within Scotland can be understood at a local, regional and wider level. Most importantly, the right questions need to be framed, and the right research strategies need to be developed, in order to extract the maximum amount of information about the Scottish Neolithic.
