Abstract:
This paper investigates the use of multi-modal cueing through full-body haptic feedback to enhance pilot-vehicle system (PVS) performance, reduce mental workload (MWL), and increase situational awareness (SA) in both good and degraded visual environments (GVE/DVE). Piloted simulations were conducted using an H-60-like flight dynamics model in a virtual reality (VR) motion-based simulator, evaluating two ADS-33-like mission task elements (MTEs) – precision hover and slalom – under visual-only and combined visual and haptic feedback conditions in both GVE and DVE. In this work the heat transfer and pressure drop experimental results obtained in a two step finned tube bank with conical fins are presented. The tube bank had an equilateral triangle array composed of nine finned tubes with conical fins inclined 45 degrees in respect with the tube axis. The heat exchange external area of a single tube is approximately 0.07 m2. All necessary thermal parameters, inlet/outlet temperatures, mass flows, for the heat balance in the tube bank were determined for different air velocities, Re = 3400–18400, and one constant thermal charge provided by a hot water flow

The Archimedes wind turbine boasts an innovative blade design with the potential of harvesting energy from wind with much more efficiency. The blade design utilizes both lift and drag forces, and boasts several other advantages over conventional horizontal axis and vertical axis wind turbines, which implies higher power production efficiency and a possibility of being used in urban areas with attendant low wind speed regimes for small scale power generation, being more portable. However, there exists a dearth of experimental reports on the Archimedes wind turbine besides CFD simulations, to ob

Photopumped and recombination X-ray laser schemes are under investigation at Physics International, on the DNA/PITHON 3 TW facility. For the sodium-neon resonant photopumped scheme, DNA/PITHON is used to implode a sodium-bearing plasma, the pump, and a secondary capacitor bank is used to drive a neon gas puff Z-pinch, the lasant. The characterization of the pinched sodium plasma is reported in this paper, as are pump power measurements, which showed 65 GW in the Na X 1s2-1s2p 1P line. In earlier experiments, neon gas was imploded onto sodium-fluoride coated targets, on-axis, but insufficient s

This study investigated the biodynamic responses of the seated body to two-axis vibration applied along the fore-aft and vertical directions in the 0.5 to 20 Hz range, independently and simultaneously, using 9 adult male subjects. The measurements were performed with the subjects seated with and without the hands and back supports under two different magnitudes of vibration. The apparent mass responses distributed over the seat pan and the back support are determined in order to better understand the dynamic interactions of the body with the back support under single as well as dual-axis vibra

This short pedagogical movie illustrates an effect in nuclear physics called backbending which was first observed in the study of the rotational behavior of rapidly rotating rare-earth nuclei in Stockholm, Sweden in 1971. The video contains a mechanical analog utilizing rare-earth magnets and rotating gyroscopes on a turntable along with some historic spectra and papers associated with this landmark discovery together with its explanation in terms of the Coriolis induced uncoupling and rotational alignment of a specific pair of particles occupying high-j intruder orbitals. Thus backbending rep

Statistical distributions of urban noise levels are influenced by many complex phenomena, including spatial and temporal variations in the source level, multisource mixtures, propagation losses, and random fading from multipath reflections. This article provides a broad perspective on the varying impacts of these phenomena. Distributions incorporating random fading and averaging (e.g., gamma and noncentral Erlang) tend to be negatively skewed on logarithmic (decibel) axes but can be positively skewed if the fading process is strongly modulated by source power variations (e.g., compound gamma).
