Abstract:
The interpretations of the war of 1835 and the identity of the Fingo that were presented by the English settlers, have remained the mainstays of all subsequent histories. They asserted that the war of 1835 was the fault purely of 'Kaffir' aggression, that it was controlled by Hintza, the paramount chief, and that the ensuing hostilities were justifiable colonial defence and punishment of the Africans. The arrival of the Fingo in the Colony, it was claimed, was unconnected with the war. It was alleged that the seventeen thousand Fingo brought into the Colony in May 1835 were all Natal refugees who had fled south from the devastations of Shaka and the 'mfecane', and who had then become oppressed by their Gca1eka hosts. Both of these 'histories' need to be inverted. The 'irruption' of December 1834 was not unprovoked Rharhabe aggression, but the final response to years of the advance of the Cape Colony. Large areas of Rharhabe land had been expropriated, and their cattle regularly raided. Their women and children had been seized and taken into the Colony as labourers. The attacks were carried out by only a section of the Rharhabe on specific areas in Albany. The damage caused, and stock taken, was vastly exaggerated by the colonists. The Cape Governor, D'Urban, and British troop reinforcements arrived in Albany in January, and the Rharhabe were invaded two months later. D'Urban later invaded the innocent Gcaleka, took cattle, wreaked havoc and killed Hintza after he refused to ally with the Colony. The Fingo made their appearance at this moment. They were not a homogenous group. There were four categories within the term: mission and refugee collaborators (who were given land at Peddie and had chiefs appointed), military auxiliaries, labourers, and later, destitute Rharhabe seeking employment in the Colony. Only a small minority of the total Fingo were from Natal. The majority of the Fingo appear to have been Rharhabe and Gcaleka women and children, captured by the troops during the war and distributed on farms in the eastern districts to ameliorate the chronic labour shortage. Thus, instead of the year 1835 being one of great loss for the eastern Cape, as claimed by the settler apologists, it was a catalyst to the economic development of the area. All Rharhabe land was seized, to be granted as settler farms. Well over sixty thousand Rharhabe and Gcaleka cattle were captured and distributed amongst the colonists. The security threat of the adjacent Rharhabe and the independent Gcaleka was removed. And a large colonial labour supply was ensured.

Abstract:
Video is a large part of today’s society where surveillance cameras represent the biggest source of big data, and real-time entertainment is the largest network traffic category. There is currently a large interest in analysing the contents of video where video analysis is mainly conducted by people. This increase in video has for instance made it difficult for professional editors to analyse movies and series in a scalable way, and alternative solutions are needed. The media technology company June, want to explore scalable alternatives for extracting metadata from video. With recent advances in Machine Learning and the rise of machine-learning-asa-service platforms, June wished more specifically to explore how these Machine Learning services can be utilised for extracting metadata from videos, and from it construct a summary regarding its contents. This work examined Machine Learning as an option for scalable video summarisation which resulted in developing and evaluating an application that utilised transcription, summarisation, and translation services to produce a text based summarisation of video. Furthermore to examine the services current state of affairs, multiple services from different providers were tested, evaluated and compared to each other. Lastly, in order to evaluate the summarisation services an evaluation model was developed. The test results showed that the translation services were the only service that produced good results. Transcription and summarisation performed poorly in the tests which renders the suggested solution of combining the three services for video summarisation as impractical.

Abstract:
In the light of the HIVAIDS pandemic in South Africa and its potential impact on learners, counselling is still the best available tool that can be used by the school management team to deal with the loss, pain, trauma and suffering experienced by the lear:ners. This study focuses on the role and functions of the school management team in managing the counselling of primary school learners affected by HIV/AIDS in Mount Ayliff District in the Eastern Cape, using a literature review and empirical· investigation. The former discusses the HIV/AIDS phenomenon, school policy on HIV/AIDS, HIV/AIDS counselling, and the role and functions of the school management team in managing school counselling services. Egan's model, known as the skilled helper model was used to provide an understanding of counselling services. A qualitative study investigated the views of a sample of management teams of three primary schools in Mount Ayliff District in the Eastern Cape. Sites and participants were selected by purposeful sampling. Data were collected by use of indepth interviews with two principals, two deputy principals, four heads of departments (HODs) and one senior teacher. All the interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed. Notes were also taken to supplement the audio-tapes. The data were later analysed. Essentially, findings illustrated that the school management team has a critical role in ensuring the provision of effective counselling services to those learners who are affected by HIV/AIDS. The data further reflected the importance of a school counsellor, an HIV/AIDS school policy and the Department of Education's intervention in training and empowering the management team in effectively managing the ravages of HIV/AIDS in schools.

Abstract:
New rare earth element (REE) data from all lithologies of the Insizwa lobe, Mount Ayliff Complex, are presented. On the basis of size and type of Eu anomaly, the geochemical subdivision of the complex as previously described is sustained and, additionally, the Top Gabbronorite of the Central Zone is shown to have formed from a magma that was compositionally distinct from other Central Zone magmas. The Basal Zone crystallized from magmas with large negative Eu anomalies probably acquired through crustal contamination. Previously recognized compositional heterogeneity in the contact rocks is also a feature of the REE. Overall, the Insizwa magmas had higher La/Sm ratios and, to a lesser extent, higher Gd/Yb ratios than Karoo basalts and appear to have no representatives in the basalt lava sequence of Lesotho.

Abstract:
This study is concerned with the physical and human causes of soil. erosion. Some quantitative information on the magnitude of soil erosion for different ecoregions in South Africa is available. However, such quantitative data is available only from a few sites. One objective of this thesis is to add to the existing data. Site specific data is provided for the two study areas in the Eastern Cape Province, namely, Chani area in Mt Frere and Brooks Nek area in Mt Ayliff. A comparison is made between the physical and chemical characteristics of the soils found in both study areas. The spatial and temporal extent of the erosion problem is also given. Another major objective is to evaluate the soil rehabilitation measures used at these two areas. An evaluation of the relevance and efficiency of the erosion control measures is made. (For gully erosion especially, the present study provides an evaluation of the suitability and effectiveness of the gully control mechanisms adopted.) Most importantly, a third objective of this study is to investigate the awareness and attitudes of the members of the communities affected by the erosion problem. Among the many different factors found to be important in the causal nexus that results >f in soil erosion, it has been found that many of the problems originate from social causes, like that of too large a population for the limited available resources. Added to this, factors like poor development programmes, bad agricultural practices, bad road management, have exacerbated the erosion problem. In other words, from research and interviews conducted in the study areas, erosion problems linked to recent political policies; to farming and to other practices were found to be associated, inter alia, with the shortage of land, unemployment, the lack of the necessary farming equipment, overgrazing and so on. To stress the point, the five important factors contributing to erosion were identified as an over exploitation of the land resource for basic needs, bad road management, floods, drought, and concentrated flow on furrows made by both on and off-road vehicles. We noted that another important feature of this thesis is to give an account of the psychological attitudes of individuals living near the areas affected by erosion, Respondents to interviews and to questionnaires generally agree that there has been a lot of change in their natural and man-made environments, especially in terms of gully development and vegetation reduction. However, there is a disturbing level of ignorance concerning the causes and consequences of erosion. When asked to estimate the date of gully initiation in Brooks Nek, for instance, none of the respondents could give even rough estimates or a specific incident leading to the current dominant erosion problem. The general attitude towards the problem in their midst was one of indifference. The general belief is that erosion is caused not by themselves but by natural phenomena. Further, most respondents thought it is someone else's (e.g. government's) responsibility to ameliorate the harmful consequences associated with land deterioration and soil loss. The data for this thesis have been obtained through surveying the landscape directly over a three-year period (1994-6), and by using aerial photographs for 1982 (Mt Frere site) and 1993 (Mt Ayliff site). Detailed analysis was undertaken of chemical and physical characteristics of soil at both sites. In addition, quantitative and qualitative surveys of people in the area were attempted; to ascertain their understanding and contribution to the problem. The implications, as shown from the results of this investigation, are that the soil erosion problem at both study areas are largely independent of soil characteristics. On the contrary, this study will show that human practices are the major initial causes for soil erosion in all the cases investigated. It was found that over the years, the land use practices in both sites have changed significantly. Factors accelerating the development of erosion forms at Brooks Nek, for instance, include the footpaths and stock trails. In contrast, artificial contouring and poor gabion layout are the major causes in Chani. However, it must be mentioned that it is not always easy to separate the effects of human from natural causes. Once the effects of human activities exceed the optimum limits of soil resistance and resilience, erosion starts. Then erosion acceleration will not necessarily be confined to the original cause(s). Natural storms and floods, or even drought will contribute in accelerating the erosion rates.

Albrechtsen, Bart Hunter. "A geochemical and field study of the Ingeli and Horseshoe lobes, Mount Ayliff Complex, South Africa, and its potential for magmatic suphide ores." Diss., 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/27184.

Abstract:
The Mount Ayliff Complex (MAC) is situated on the border between Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Eastern Cape provinces in the Republic of South Africa, approximately 90 km due west of Port Shepstone. The Complex forms part of the Karoo Igneous Province and includes five lobes (Ingeli, Insizwa, Tonti, Tabankulu, and Horseshoe) that are the remnants of a single continuous intrusive sheet that had an original extent of 18,000km2• The current outcrop is estimated at 800km2• The lobes all show extensive internal differentiation, from basal ultramafic cumulates to diorites and monzonites at the top, while most other intrusions in the Karoo Igneous Province cooled rapidly enough to produce relatively homogenous dolerites. Most work conducted on the Complex thus far has centered on the Insizwa lobe due to the presence of a Ni-sulphide occurrence near the base of the lobe at Waterfall Gorge. The setting of the ores has analogies to the Noril'sk-Talnakh deposits, which has raised considerable exploration interest on the Mount Ayliff Complex over the last century. The current study investigates the Ni-Cu sulphide potential of the Ingeli and Horseshoe lobes, which have been poorly studied in the past. To this effect, a stream sediment survey was conducted around the Ingeli lobe to try and detect potentially hidden magmatic sulphide ores. Further, the five lobes of the Complex have been compared in terms of lithology and lithogeochemistry. Analytical techniques used for the current study include: XRF, ICP-MS and electron microprobe. Stream sediment samples were analysed using XRF and ICP-OES. Olivines from the ultramafic cumulates of the Ingeli and Insizwa lobes are undepleted in Ni, whereas olivines from the Horseshoe and Tabankulu lobes are strongly depleted in Ni. This suggests that the rocks of the latter two lobes crystallized from parental magmas that interacted with a sulphide liquid and that the magmatic flow direction was from the north to the south. The data indicate that the ultramafic rocks of the Complex plot on or near control lines between olivine and Karoo dolerite indicating that the rocks are mixtures of cumulus olivine and trapped melt of Karoo dolerite composition. There appears to be a copper enrichment towards the top of the ultramafic package in the Ingeli lobe. This pattern corresponds to other studies conducted in the InsiZWa lobe and suggests that the two lobes had originally been connected. The lowermost cumulates of the Ingeli lobe contain an enhanced crustal component suggesting some in situ contamination. No significant sulphide enrichments were encountered in the Basal Zone rocks of the Ingeli lobe. However, the stream sediment data indicate localized PGE enrichment indicating the possible presence of a localized hidden sulphide occurrence of the type found at Waterfall Gorge. Small amounts of sulphides were found associated with the Basal Zone rocks in the Horseshoe lobe consistent with the trends of Ni-depletion of olivines. However, a lack of Co depletion in the ultramafic rocks of this lobe suggests that any sulphide segregation event that did take place was of a relatively small scale.

Abstract:
Since the introduction of Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) worldwide, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-related morbidity and mortality has reportedly improved for many People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). The treatment of HIV/AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) consists of taking a combination of three or more antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) known as Highly Active ART (HAART). Chronic administration of HAART can lead to various adverse events that include mitochondrial toxicity which not only impacts adherence to therapy, but also patient safety. Mitochondrial toxicity has been most commonly associated with stavudine (d4T). Mitochondrial toxicity may manifest as peripheral neuropathy, lactic acidosis/hyperlactatemia and lipoatrophy. The South African ART guidelines launched in 2004 uses d4T as part of the first line HAART regimen in the management of HIV/AIDS [National Department of Health (NDoH), 2004]. This is a retrospective study of 803 enrolled HAART-naïve adult patients initiated on a d4T-containing regimen between January 2006 and June 2009. The aim of the research was to quantitatively assess for the prevalence of mitochondrial toxicity as a result of d4T use in their individual regimens. A total of 120 (14.9%) of the study population (803) experienced peripheral neuropathy, with the majority reporting peripheral neuropathy within 6 months (median 5.9 months) after d4T initiation. Twelve patients on concurrent anti-TB drug treatment complained of increased severity of peripheral neuropathy with d4T use. The blood lactate level of 70 patients were reviewed, 18 (8.7%) of the study population had lactate levels > 2.2mmol/l. Fourteen patients (1.7%) of the study population experienced lipoatrophy. The mean duration before developing hyperlactatemia was 21.8 months (SD± 7.6) and 24.5 months (SD± 7.3) for lipoatrophy. An awareness of the early detection of symptoms associated with mitochondrial toxicity is useful to enable optimal clinical outcomes, and support adherence and compliance to therapy. In-service training of clinicians in pharmacovigilance protocols may also be improved. Since 2010, Tenofovir has been added to the first line regimen, and although d4t is no longer the first line ARV of choice, a large number of patients are still being maintained on a d4t-containing regimen. Finally, this research may be used in assessing the risk profile for patients being initiated on NRTI based regimens.

The aim of this study is to characterize plastid DNA sequence homologies within higher plant nuclear genomes. It is concluded that integrated within the tobacco nuclear genome are multiple copies of large (ie. in excess of 18 kbp), contigous fracts of plastid DNA. The presence of large tracts of plastid DNA in the tobacco nuclear genome contrasts the arrangement of such sequences in the nuclear genomes of other studied plant species.
