Full textThis thesis tries to explain the problem of the great confrontations between the traditional native Indians who was spoiled of their lands known as the « Pacha Mama » like the forgotten of the « Ivy Imaraa » and the big landowners.These native Aymaras, Quechuas and Tupis Guaranis worked as a pressure group in order to obtain the property of lands first as a social class then as an ethnic group. In their will to be recognised politically and economically they rise up during the natives movements against landowners of national lands and multinational companies. That’s why they organised themselves in pressure groups to get the access to land as well as the whole natural resources.At the beginning we will see the historical research about all the shortages that indigenous highlands and lowlands of Bolivia suffered, threatening their survival.Then we are going to look at the pre-colonial, colonial and especially republic evolution where took place the struggle for power and for the appropriation of lands and the wealth they contain and that can produce internationals wars like the war of Chaco for the oil. To these wars were added civil wars for the conquest and possession of mines such as the ones opposing the tin barons like Patiño, Hochschild and Aramayo.Therefore, we assist to the born and evolution of liberal governments and political party which craving for power. Besides that, the thesis attempts to demonstrate the problem aroused the coca leaf in the seventies because of the drug trade and the strong position of the US in Bolivian internal policy.Then we will address the problem of economic financing in which there are some autonomous territories because of the unequal distribution of wealth of some departments and regions.Thereafter we will focus in the important role exercised by women in the political, economic and social life, especially in the struggle for land and in the process of gender equality.Finally, we will demonstrate that despite the populist and nativist government of Evo Morales, the problem of land distribution has not yet found an adequate solution

Full textThe central concept of this work is Aymaraness as an intellectual construction about Aymara Indians of Bolivia. Of particular interest are those intellectuals involved in fomenting the construction of Aymara identity. This work develops a cultural history of intellectuals involved in fomenting the construction of Aymara identity, with the purpose of understanding their motivations. Fundamental to this research is the demystification of Aymaraness at several levels. First studying the rhetoric of Bolivian identity and the central role Aymara Indians play in their discourse of Bolivian identity. Second, understanding the role of researchers who use Aymaraness as their raw research material, and exploring some of their theories to understand how these constructions acquire legitimization. Third, identifying and understanding some Bolivian activist scholars who use their own identity as a material fact of Aymaraness

Full textLa presente tesis tematiza un fenómeno de reciente data, aparentemente contemporáneo, como lo es la emergencia de procesos de reivindicación de lo indígena, o etnogénesis , que experimentan las comunidades aymaras del norte de Chile en las últimas tres décadas del siglo XX. Su enfoque, sin embargo, es netamente histórico pues, siguiendo a Julio Aróstegui , considera como eje central de la investigación la observación temporal de las comunidades aymaras, esto es, la observación del cambio de estas comunidades. Para dar cuenta de esta temporalidad en lo que podemos denominar como subcultura aymara chilena , debemos ser capaces de entender que el acontecimiento histórico que la investigación considera: la etnogénesis, y todos los acontecimientos que podemos conceptuar como históricos, “.. pueden ser descritos, pero no pueden ser explicados por sí mismos sino echando mano de relaciones que son externas a ellos. Full textTwo populations belonging to the two main Native linguistic groups of Bolivia, Aymaras and Quechuas, have been analysed for different genetic markers in order to provide relevant information about their genetic relationships and demographic processes. This work comprises three parts: the study of i) autosomal markers (Alu insertions), ii) uniparental markers, both mtDNA and Y-chromosome, and iii) a region including the APOE/C1/C4/C2 gene cluster that code for apolipoproteins that can have epidemiological implications. In the first part, thirty-two polymorphic Alu insertions (18 autosomal and 14 from the X chromosome) were studied. The main objective was to determine from genetic data whether the expansion of the Quechua language into Bolivia could be associated with demographic (Inca migration of Quechua-speakers from Peru into Bolivia) or cultural (language imposition by the Inca Empire) processes. Our results indicated that the two Bolivian samples showed a high genetic similarity for both sets of markers and were clearly differentiated from the two Peruvian Quechua samples available in the literature. Additionally, our data were compared with the available literature to determine the genetic and linguistic structure, and East-West differentiation in South America. The close genetic relationship between the two Bolivian samples and their differentiation from the Quechua-speakers from Peru suggested that the Quechua language expansion in Bolivia took place without any important demographic contribution. The second part, mtDNA and Y-chromosome uniparental markers were studied to evaluate sex-speci?c differences and give new insights into the demographic processes of the Andean region. In that case, the two Bolivian samples showed more genetic differences for the mtDNA than for the Y-chromosome. For the mtDNA, 81% of Aymaras and 61% of Quechuas presented haplogroup B2. Native American Y-chromosomes were found in 97% of Aymaras (89% hg Q1a3a and 11% hgQ1a3*) and 78% of Quechuas (100% hg Q1a3a). Our data revealed high diversity values in the two populations, in agreement with other Andean studies. The comparisons with the available literature for both sets of markers indicated that the central Andean area is relatively homogeneous. For mtDNA, the Aymaras seemed to have been more isolated throughout time, maintaining their genetic characteristics, while the Quechuas have been more permeable to the incorporation of female foreigners and Peruvian influences. On the other hand, male mobility would have been widespread across the Andean region according to the homogeneity found in the area. Particular genetic characteristics presented by both samples support a past common origin of the Altiplano populations in the ancient Aymara territory, with independent, although related histories, with Peruvian (Quechuas) populations. The study of the autosomal region of 108kb, including the APOE/C1/C4/C2 gene cluster and the flanking region in which twenty five polymorphisms (10 STRs and 15 SNPs) were analysed to give new insights into the evolutionary history of this genomic region in Andean populations. In general, diversity in Bolivians was low, with nine out of 15 SNPs and seven out of 10 STRs being practically monomorphic. Part of this reduced diversity could be attributed to selection since the APOE/C1/C4/C2 region presented a high degree of conservation compared to the flanking genes in both Bolivians and Europeans, which may be due to its physiological importance. Also, the lower genetic diversity in Bolivians compared to Europeans for some markers could be attributed to their different demographic histories

Resumo: Há uma presença e protagonismo crescente das mulheres indígenas na América Latina nas lutas e reivindicações relacionadas com diversas problemáticas sociais. No entanto, pouco se tem de produção escrita na qual essas mulheres manifestem, com voz própria, o que para elas significou ou significa sua participação nessas lutas . Neste sentido, o presente estudo centra-se na produção de pensamentos, perspectivas, reivindicações e lutas das mulheres mayas da Guatemala e aymara da Bolívia, na época atual. Os seus seus interesses e reivindicações de prioridade com base em suas experiências e na interpretação que elas têm de suas próprias realidades, são examinados Os dois eixos temáticos principais são os direitos individuais das mulheres e direitos culturais coletivas. Ambos tipos de direitos estão interligados no caso das mulheres indígenas, devido a sua condição de gênero, bem como por sua identidade étnica, mas como se demonstra no estudo, o trenzado de relações de poder abrange outros tipos de relacionamentos (de classe ou geracional, por exemplo) que podem produzir conflitos de interesse para as mulheres indígenas e os conflitos com seus colegas do mesmo grupo étnico. Para o movimento feminista atual, é preciso compreender em que sentido o gênero e a diversidade cultural afeta o pleno exercício da cidadania para as mulheres indígenas. O seja, não se analisa a situação das mulheres indígenas frente à cultura dominante (mestiça ou não indígena), mas sim, sua condição de atoras sociais dentro dos movimentos que lutam para fazer valer os seus direitos como mulheres indígenas, em seus respectivos entornos
Abstract: There exists a growing presence of and role for Latin American indigenous woman in the struggles and affirmations related to diverse social issues. However, there is limited written production in which said women manifest themselves, through their own voice, expressing what their participation in these struggles implies or signifies for them. This study focuses on the creation of thoughts, perspectives, claims and struggles by Mayan women from Guatemala and Aymaras from Boliva, in present times. Their prioritized interests and demands are examined based upon their experiences and the interpretation that they have of their own realities. The two main themes are individual rights and collective cultural rights. These both types of rights are intertwined in the case of indigenous women because of their gender and ethnic identities. Furthermore, as is demonstrated in this study, the intertwine of relations of power encompass other types of relationships (class and generational, for example), that can lead to the production of conflicts of interest for indigenous women and also conflicts with peers of the same ethnic group. For today¿s feminist movement, it is necessary to understand in what sense gender and cultural diversity affects the full exercise of citizenship for these indigenous women. In other words, this does not mean analysis of the situation of these women from the point of view of the dominant culture (landino/mestizo) but rather their status as social actors within movements of social change to make validate their rights as indigenous women in their respective environments

Full textAccording to the most recent researches, the post-independence has been one of the darkest period in the history of the Bolivian Indian communities. During the decade of 1880 the Bolivian state apply an economic program that aims to the dislocation of the ayllu's traditional organisation and territory. The "rural masses" of the Aymara highlands make their return on the political scene in response to that liberal aggression against communal land tenure, especially in the provinces of Omasuyos and Pacajes. The Aymaras Apoderados are stemmed from the communal political structures which confers them their legitimacy and their political and juridical power of representation. They carry out a strenuous struggle in defence of their collective territorial rights and lead a fight that wave between the legal forms of a systematic resort to the sense of justice and paternalist protection of the State, and some violent uprisings which are not the mere expression of the "Indian rage" but the result of a large and complex process of resistance and political assertion against the overwhelming power of the hacendado class. Most of the leaders are killed during the Federal War, but the Indian question came back on the national scale towards 1914. A new network is reorganised, and throughout the rediscovery of the colonial titles the cacical tradition is reinvented. Within a dynamic and sometimes contradictory bargaining, the political apprenticeship of the Caciques-Apoderados is tightly connected to the emergence of the Bautista Saavedra's Republican Party. While the main objective is still the access to the land based on the renegotiation of the "colonial pact", this initial claim become more and more integrated into a wider global vision of the Bolivian Nation which elitist and excluding model is profoundly questioned

Full textHow are the borders redefined by the “territorialities” which cross them? Which actors use these cross-border territorialities? What room is left to the state, when the local authorities living on the border refer to an indigenous culture, which preexisted to the nation, to (re)build a territory? The recent dynamics of the Aymara cross-border co-operation between Chile, Peru and Bolivia question the political and territorial reconfigurations which affect a fundamental state institution: the border. This doctoral thesis analyzes the cross-border public policies led by Aymaras rural mayors, according to a long-term approach of the construction of the Chilean state. By comprehending the state through its political, social and territorial peripheries, we study the networks of actors who take part in the transformations of the governance of the territory. The permanence of political and administrative actions on the border on one hand, the uses of inherited institutional roles on the other, show that beyond its alleged weakening, the state is paradoxically strengthened, through a complex securitization process of a diplomatically disputed cross-border area

Full textEn Bolivie, l’élection du président autochtone Evo Morales en 2005 et la réforme constitutionnelle de 2009, intégrant le concept ancestral du vivir bien ont fait couler beaucoup d’encre ces dernières années. Alors que la plupart des ouvrages se penchent principalement sur l’apport théorique du vivir bien, ce mémoire cherche à enrichir la compréhension de ce concept dans sa dimension pratique et locale. Ce mémoire porte plus particulièrement sur l’expérience urbaine des autochtones, principalement des Aymaras, et des non-autochtones dans leur quête du bien-vivre à La Paz et à El Alto, en Bolivie. L’analyse se penche principalement sur la négociation des identités en mettant en lumière les différentes dimensions, tant politiques, économiques, sociales, culturelles qu’artistiques, du quotidien des autochtones, mais aussi des non-autochtones. In Bolivia, the election of indigenous president Evo Morales in 2005 and the constitutional reform of 2009, incorporating the ancestral concept of living well have been the subject of much attention in recent years. While most books primarily focus on the theoretical contribution of the living well concept, this thesis seeks to enrich the understanding of its practical and local dimensions. This thesis examines the urban experience of Indigenous people, mainly Aymaras, and non-Indigenous people in their pursuit of living well in La Paz and El Alto, in Bolivia. The analysis focuses on the negotiation of identities by highlighting the different dimensions, both political, economic, social, cultural and artistic, of the everyday lives of Indigenous people, but also of non-Indigenous people. This thesis more specifically explores the affirmation strategies put forward to feel good, including the creation of networks, the preservation of ritual practices and the participation in various cultural and artistic activities including the entrada folclórica universitaria, a university festival in which students partake. -- Keywords: Aymaras, living well, identity, authenticity, urban anthropology, fiesta, dance,culture, La Paz, El Alto, Bolivia.
En Bolivia, la elección del presidente indígena Evo Morales en 2005 y la reformaconstitucional de 2009, que incorpora el concepto ancestral del vivir bien, han sido objeto de mucha atención en los últimos años. Si bien la mayoría de los libros se enfocan en la contribución teórica del vivir bien, esta tesis busca enriquecer la comprensión de este concepto en su dimensión práctica y local. Esta tesis se centra en la experiencia urbana de los indígenas, principalmente los Aymaras y de los no indígenas en su búsqueda del vivir bien en La Paz y El Alto, en Bolivia. El análisis se enfoca en la negociación de identidades, destacando las diferentes dimensiones, tanto políticas, económicas, sociales, culturales y artísticas, de la vida cotidiana de los indígenas, como también de los no indígenas. Full textIn Bolivia, the great celebration of Jesús del Gran Poder, mobilizes every year the entire city of La Paz. The morenada, main dance of this ritual, stages characters with black faces, wearing heavy, opulent and disproportionate costumes. These ostentatious body-objects are moved by the dancers, creating an intricate aesthetic of wealth and abundance. The morenada is performed by an urban population of artisans and traders of rural Aymara background. They painstakingly build the socio-economic success that allows them to establish themselves in town. Based upon an ethnography of the morenada dancers’ bodily practices, during the preparation and realization of their performance, this work intends to show that dance can be a powerfull tool for understanding how individual positions and collective identities are constantly reshaping. Indeed, in the space of morenada, economic, bodily and devotional beliefs and practices, interact to transform each other. At a broader scale, this work questions the way bodily and social dynamics contribute to invent a specific relationship to prosperity: dance is not only the expression of urban success, but its measure and condition
