Abstract:
The article examines the role of the prominent Ukrainian translator and researcher of Azerbaijani literature, Mykola Miroshnychenko, in the development of bilateral dialogue between our peoples in various spheres. The author considers the role of the individual as a key and unique resource for the development of relations between countries that have only restored their state independence after decades of Soviet occupation, the destruction of the mechanisms of creating a unique state, cultural, and diplomatic space peculiar to the Ukrainian and Azerbaijani peoples; who learn to build bilateral dialogue, establish cooperation in various sectors, including literature, culture, and journalism. The relevance of the article lies in the lack of research into the figure of Miroshnychenko as a Ukrainian translator, a researcher of Azerbaijani literature and its heritage in the context of the revival of the Ukrainian-Azerbaijani dialogue and the presence of certain crisis processes, such as a crisis of competence, quality of work and expertise of self-proclaimed researchers of cultural relations between our countries. The phenomenon of Ukrainian-Azerbaijani studies (in the context of which the figure of M. Miroshnychenko is considered) is characterized as a constant, long-lasting process, with its own traditions and values, the formation of which was made by the outstanding Mykola Gulak, Oleksandr Navrotskyi, Lev Lopatynskyi, Agatangel Krymskyi, Leonid Pervomaiskyi, Valery Marchenko , Pavlo Movchan, etc. The main achievements of Mykola Miroshnychenko as a Ukrainian translator of Azerbaijani literature are named: the development of Ukrainian Azerbaijani studies as a phenomenon in Ukrainian literature and science, the continuation of the traditions of the outstanding M. Gulak, A. Krymskyi, etc., the actualization of their achievements; systematization and research of large volumes of translation and scientific works, selection of high-quality and competent ones; development of dialogue between writers, literary experts, journalists of Ukraine and Azerbaijan; translation of dozens of Azerbaijani poets to Ukrainian, both classics and modern authors. The author emphasizes the reasons for the exceptional value and significance of Miroshnychenko's works: unlike many Ukrainian translators from Azerbaijani, Mykola Mykolovych perfectly mastered the Azerbaijani language (as well as Turkish, Old Turkish, Crimean Tatar) and constantly improved his knowledge of literature, culture, history, customs and traditions of Azerbaijanis, without which it is impossible to carry out a highly artistic translation of both modern literature and classics that wrote their texts under the influence of complex mystical and philosophical currents; the researcher devoted more than thirty years of his life to Azerbaijani studies, which culminated in the fundamental two-volume "Anthology of Azerbaijani Poetry", which was published in 2006 and to this day remains the main work that represents Azerbaijani literature in Ukrainian translations at a high artistic level. The article outlines a number of tasks that must be implemented in order to continue the work of M. Miroshnychenko and the qualitative development of literary relations between our countries: publication of manuscripts of translations from Azerbaijani that never saw the light of day during the translator's lifetime due to lack of funding; publication of author's poetry collections, in particular, a series of poems dedicated to Azerbaijan; development of dialogue platforms for discussion and analysis of the heritage of the poet, translator and researcher between specialists of Ukraine and Azerbaijan.

Abstract:
This article analyses the scandal that broke out in Azerbaijan after the publication of Stone Dreams, a novel by Azerbaijani writer Akram Aylisli. Stone Dreams depicted and condemned the persecution against the Armenian population in Baku and Sumgait in 1988-1990, as well as the early twentieth century massacre of the Armenian community in the writer’s home village, Aylis in Nakhichevan. Akram Aylisli touched on a taboo and in a context with weak civic and democratic institutions, the discussion of such traumatic events in Azerbaijan’s recent past proved unacceptable to both society and the ruling elite. This article reaches beyond contemporary debates, however, to cover earlier and less well-known works with Armenian-Azerbaijani themes such as Evgeniy Voyskunskiy’s novel Maiden Dreams, Seymur Baycan’s Gugark, Maria Martirosova’s Photos To Remember Me By and Levon Javakhian’s short story “Kirve”. These works are reviewed here in terms of how they address issues of conflict, reconciliation and responsibility. This article underscores the importance of literary works dealing with conflict, as they usually reach a much broader audience than academic books.

Abstract:
The essay focuses on the problems that hindered the ghazal genre from developing and how the poet kept the tradition alive in Azerbaijani literature at the start of the 20th century. We used Aliagha Vahid’s literary creativity for our project since he lived through this period in Azerbaijan, experienced all of its hardships, and demonstrated the genre’s potential by creating poetic imagery of the time in his ghazals. He is an Azerbaijani poet who is revered in the Turkic community as Fuzuli’s successor and is credited with saving the ghazal genre in Azerbaijani literature. Analyzing his lyrics provided excellent possibilities to examine the influential factors on all of the Azerbaijani literature at the time. In the study, his creation of new kinds of ghazals with social and political issues while retaining the characteristics of the traditional ghazal genre was investigated. With him, the genre in Azerbaijani literature underwent a new phase. The attempt to eradicate the ghazal from the Azerbaijani literature which has a history of centuries –long history did not succeed as a result of mostly Aliagha Vahid’s serious efforts. For this purpose, the poet’s historical milieu, the challenges of the repression, his satirical ghazals with a sociopolitical theme, the thematic details of his lyrics, and other issues have been involved in the investigation.

Abstract:
Summary After the restoration of state independence in Azerbaijan, within 20–25 years, a rich translation literature covering various types and genres of our national word art was created in English. At the same time, books and monographs, literary-critical and theoretical-scientific articles were written in English about Azerbaijani literature. Many of the publications in English were published in the USA, Great Britain and other foreign countries, and some of them were published in Baku. At that time, it was impossible to fully cover the translation literature created by translating from our mother tongue within the framework of one article. The translated works we reviewed show that our literary examples translated from our mother tongue into English have been successfully presented. However, each of the translations we talked about in the form of a summary deserves a wider analysis and study from the point of view of translation studies. The purpose of the article. It is a comprehensive study of the relations of Azerbaijani literature in the context of world literature. Methodology and methods used. The methodological basis of the article is based on historical-comparative, comparative-typological, analytical-critical methods of approach. In the context of Azerbaijani-Western scientific-aesthetic thought, as well as in the level of scientific-theoretical parallels of Azerbaijani-English relations in the medieval period and XIX– XX centuries, in 1991–2011, the translation of examples of modern Azerbaijani literature into English and the study of these works in English-language literary studies were dedicated. The main scientific innovation put forward. In the presented article, the author made innovations in the field of translation studies and scientific-theoretical aspects of the problems of studying Azerbaijani literature in the English-language literary studies of 1991–2011. Here, the materials have been filtered by literary and critical analysis, and the adequacy of the same theory of translation has been evaluated. The scientific novelty of the research was also developed by the analysis of the problems of studying Azerbaijani literature in Englishlanguage literary studies. The following result was obtained in the article: Summarizing our analysis and research on the subject, we come to the following conclusions. 1) There is a history of approximately four hundred years of translation of a number of examples of classical and modern Azerbaijani literature into English and studying them in English-language literary studies. 2) Many examples of Azerbaijani literature in different types and genres have been translated into English and published separately as books. So, a rich material has been created for the study and research of the translated literature of the mentioned period. 3) Classical Azerbaijani literature, at different stages of historical development, has more or less established relations with a number of Eastern and Western literatures through more translations. The research conducted on existing translations has led to further expansion of our relations. Classical masterpieces of Azerbaijani artistic thinking have been the focus of English literary thought for many centuries, and hundreds of our ancient historical manuscripts have become rare exhibits of individual libraries, scientific centers, and museums of Great Britain. There is no doubt that the works of our rich literary treasure – especially the works of Nizami, Nasimi, Fuzuli, Vagif, Akhundzade, Mirza Jalil, Sabir, Jabbarli, Vurgun, Anar, Elchin have created a high aesthetic appeal in English literary circles, have given impetus to the translation of their works into English and the study of their creativity in the international world.

1960-80s are the period of national-spiritual self-awareness and independence, modernism of Azerbaijani literature. The article analyzes the socio-historical, literary and cultural needs of characterizing this period as a new stage of Azerbaijani literature. After Stalin's exposure, as in other Soviet republics, the political and ideological environment in Azerbaijan softened, and a new spirit, form, and content changed in literature and art. The themes of repression and the South, in general, have become more relevant to other issues that serve national self-consciousness. Literature has moved from the subject of production and economy to the description and explanation of the inner world of man. The life of a simple and "little man" came to the fore.

Abstract:
The purpose of the research is to determine the issue of publishing and promoting the example of Ottoman literature in the Azerbaijani children's press at the beginning of the 20th century, to analyze the degree of relevance of the selected works and their role in the formation of children. Historical-comparative and typological methods were used in the article, and analysis-synthesis methods were used during the analysis of practical examples. Deductive and inductive methods were also used during the analysis of artistic material and the explanation of a number of scientific and theoretical ideas. In the period from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, Azerbaijan-Turkey literary relations, the attitude to the problems of Turkish literature in Azerbaijan's literary and cultural environment, both theoretically and factually, are quite broad and comprehensive. It is especially important to study the literary and cultural relations of the two peoples at all stages. In this article, the promotion and presentation of Turkish literature in the Azerbaijani press of the beginning of the 20th century is reflected, and the scientific novelty of the research is related to this. The main result obtained is that among the literary products published in the mentioned magazine, priority was given to works on national self-awareness, patriotism, freedom, nature, science, education, etc.

Abstract:
Cultural ties are primarily based on economic relations between Poland and Azerbaijan. These links, which date back to the fifteenth century, have always been in the ascending direction. The visits of Azerbaijani intellectuals to Poland in the 19th century, as well as the interest of Polish Orientalists to Azerbaijani literature and culture are indicative of this. The great epic “Koroglu”, created by the Azerbaijani people, was first published by Polish Orientalists and published as a book. In addition, at the beginning of the 20th century, the most magnificent architectural monuments in Baku were created by Polish architects. After Russia's occupation of Azerbaijan, a significant number of prominent intellectuals fled to Poland. The policy pursued by Azerbaijan in the cultural, economic and political spheres since the 1990s is a new milestone in the history of both Poland and Azerbaijan. All of this makes it clear that historical links are on the rise.

Abstract:
AbstractThe deterioration and scarcity of water resources have increasingly been at the heart of debates on regional security, with disputes over management and ownership of waterways leading both upstream and downstream countries to the brink of conflict. Such danger has emphasized the need for transboundary cooperation to ensure water security and regional governance. The present chapter focuses on a region where military security, economic viability, and national sentiment have overshadowed transboundary water management issues: Nagorno-Karabakh. As home to the headwaters of rivers, dams, and hydropower plants alike, the lands in and around Nagorno-Karabakh have played a vital role in providing water to an area that has been particularly afflicted by water scarcity. In the last three decades, this case has assumed significant importance in the literature on water conflicts because of the status of Nagorno-Karabakh as an upstream non-internationally recognized state whose control has been disputed by Armenia and Azerbaijan since the collapse of the Soviet Union. On 9 November 2020, the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a Russia-brokered agreement to end the military operations in Karabakh after 44 days of war. As evidenced by the reciprocal accusations of eco-terrorism and environmental sabotage, mutual distrust and deep politicization prevent the two sides from achieving successful transboundary management, which fosters instability in the region. The present chapter will assess and compare the main theories on water governance, exploring possible diplomatic outcomes between Armenia and Azerbaijan in convergence with the other regional states—Georgia, Russia, Turkey, and Iran—to foster successful cooperation over shared water resources.

This chapter provides background on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict as it unfolded in 1988-1994. Rather than a chronological narrative, the chapter tells the story of these events through the prism of four categories of explanation (structural vulnerabilities, transitional factors, leadership and culture). This situates the conflict against the backdrop of the Soviet collapse, equips the reader with basic facts, and distils the main findings of the existing literature on the conflict.

Abstract:
The success of organizations is evaluated by measuring performance. This chapter examines the financial performance of banks in Azerbaijan. The analysis was carried out using the SECA method, based on the information obtained from the official websites of 23 banks operating in Azerbaijan in 2022. The SECA method is a multiple-decision method in which performance evaluation and the weighting of the decision criteria are determined simultaneously. Indicators of liquidity, capital adequacy, and profitability are used as decision criteria. Despite the growing number of studies on performance measurement, there is still a gap in the application of multiple decision-making methods in the banking sector. This chapter is structured as follows: Initially, literature related to the banking sector in Azerbaijan and SECA analysis is presented. Subsequently, the methodology employed in the SECA method is elucidated. Following this, there is an examination of the financial performance of banks operating in Azerbaijan. Finally, the study's findings are assessed by drawing on relevant literature.

The fourth chapter is a discussion based on the total number of biographies, and the medieval as well as the contemporary literature available. It discusses professional, social, geographical, religious and economic aspects of the Jewish medical practitioners (mainly physicians); places of medical practice, the practitioners’ professional education, intellectual workshops (i.e. libraries), and their professional roles, mainly that of ‘Head of the Physicians’. It also deals with everyday life and activity of Jewish practitioners, moral aspects, fees and the ‘Geniza’ patients, as well as religious and inter-religious aspects of Jewish practitioners, the high-ranking positions Jewish practitioners held, conversion to Islam, and famous Jewish scholars, authors, poets and diplomats who were simultaneously practitioners. A few more insights are related to community affairs, socio-economic position of Jewish practitioners, their role in the leadership, their share in charity activities, and the inter-community posts they held. The last section of this chapter endorses aspects such as: Karaite and Samaritan practitioners and geographical aspects (Jewish practitioners in Andalusia, north Africa, Sicily, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Azerbaijan).

Abstract:
The paper evaluates Nurbahş Kuhistani and Silsile-i Evliya, who lived in the 15th century. In his work, Nurbahş Kuhistani deals with Azerbaijani sufis, in which he includes names and short biographies. It is given about other Sufis who lived in the same geography and time zone as Sayyid Nesimi. This information aims to understand how Sheikh Zahid and other Sufis emerged in a geography of knowledge. Identifying the names of many Sufis from Azerbaijan, drawing attention to the Sufis that exist in their life and culture environment will contribute to the understanding of the Sufi thought and cultural environment. Thus, the aim of this study is to determine the personalities of the Azerbaijani Sufis from a broader perspective. In this form, the declaration and its source are also important in terms of being the first work about the Sufis of Azerbaijan. The introduction of the book as a new literature on the history of Azerbaijani sufi points to another importance of the paper. Nurbahş Kuhistani (d. 869/1464), on the other hand, is a great Sufi, who carried out activities around the philosophy of Sufism. Nurbahş Kuhistani, whose sect called Nurbahşiyye, was spread in Khorasan and Azerbaijan and had many disciples. Nurbahş Kuhistani included 254 sufis in his Arabic work Silsile-i Evliya. While these sufis were recorded to the cities of Azerbaijan such as Tabrizi, Shirvani and Bakuyi, they also gave Sufi schools which they were famous with in the form of Halveti and Ardabil. Keywords: Sheikh Zahid, Nurbahş Kuhistani, Azerbaijan, Silsile-i Evliya.

Abstract:
The article analyses how transculturality manifests itself in a Russian-language novel the Sweet Salt of the Bosphorus by Azerbaijani writer Elchin Safarli. Despite the author’s allusions to the Constantinopolitan text of the 20th century Russian literature, a range of specifics prevents one from referring this novel to the Russian literary tradition. Due to the symbiosis of two mentalities in Safarli’s perception of the world, this literary piece incorporates the following transliterary features of writing: the author’s specific bilingual consciousness, which unlike monolingual, particularly the Russian one, states that human’s destiny is predetermined by one’s personal choice and actions, and the reconstruction of an Azerbaijani view of the world by means of the Russian language, which at the level of poetics manifests itself in that the gustatory and olfactory components of perception become dominant form of the autobiographical character’s sensory reactivity and are an important key to understanding the author’s position.

It is expected that these investments will make a serious contribution in solving the problems related to the balance of payments, in the realization of the investments that will enable the growth of the economies, in increasing the employment. The study will examine the size, development and effects of foreign capital in Azerbaijan economy. Azerbaijan, which is also known as transition economies, has gone from the Soviet Union in 1991 to regulating its economic structure from the beginning. At this point, they have undertaken various reforms to improve their inadequate investment capabilities and to attract foreign direct investment into the country. In this respect, they tried to have a share of this great pasty shared by the developed countries in the world. In this study, firstly foreign direct investments and economic effects will be examined. Then, general information about Azerbaijani economy will be given and the dimensions and effects of foreign direct investments in Azerbaijan will be revealed. After the literature review on the subject has been made, the relationship between economic growth and foreign direct investment in Azerbaijan will be empirically analyzed. The figures for Azerbaijan during the period 1995-2015 were obtained from the World Bank.

Abstract:
The study aims to determine the presence or absence of causality relationship between economic growth, employment, inflation, exchange rate, import, export in Turkey, and Azerbaijan. In the study, the two countries' annual frequency data from 1992-2018 were analyzed with the Granger causality test. According to the study, the employment rate of GDP growth appears to be the one-way Granger cause for Turkey. Also, it has been determined that the import and exchange rate is caused to the employment rate. It was observed that GDP growth and export were active on inflation and were Granger cause to inflation. It is determined that GDP growth in Azerbaijan is Granger cause to exchange rate and employment. It is also observed that the exchange rate affects inflation. According to the findings, GDP growth has an impact on the employment rate in both countries. While GDP growth is found to be active over inflation in Turkey, it is seen to be valid on the exchange rate in Azerbaijan. Research differs from similar studies in the literature in terms of variables used and countries. The findings of the research have some limitations. The data frequency used in the research starts in 1992, depending on Azerbaijan gaining its independence in 1991. The data used in the research are on an annual basis. Also, local/regional and global crisis effects have been ignored for both countries.

Abstract:
The article presents the information about a systematic review of parasitic worms – acanthocephalans of the domestic waterfowl. Based on our own and literature data, 12 acanthocephala species belonging to the 1 order, 1 family and 5 genera were identified in domestic ducks (Anas platyrhynchos dom.) and geese (Anser anser dom.). Three species of worms are found in domestic waterfowl in Azerbaijan. The acanthocephala Polymorphus magnus have been reported for the first time in Azerbaijan – Khachmaz region in both birds. Six species of acanthocephals parasitize only in anseriformes, and the remaining six species parasitize including other orders of birds (Ciconiiformes, Gruiformes, Galliformes, Podicipediformes, Gaviiformes, Falconiformes, Charadriiformes et al.) and even mammals (Rodentia, Carnivora). Of the registered acanthocephals, 3 species have a small area of distribution, and the remaining 9 species have a wide area. Each species is provided with the following data: scientific name, authority and year, synonyms, final, intermediate and auxiliary hosts, habitat in the bird body, collecting localities and geographic distribution, prevalence (PI) and intensity (II) of infection, literature sources. Keywords: geese, duck, acanthocephala, systematic review, area, hosts

Carter, Becky. Gender Inequalities in the Eastern Neighbourhood Region. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.062.

Abstract:
This rapid review examines evidence on the structural causes and drivers of gender inequalities in the Eastern Neighbourhood region and how these gender inequalities contribute to instability in the region. While the Eastern Neighbourhood region performs relatively well on gender equality compared with the rest of the world, women and girls continue to face systemic political and economic marginalisation and are vulnerable to gender-based violence. Research on Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Moldova identifies the key underlying cause to be a set of traditional patriarchal gender norms, intersecting with conservative religious identities and harmful customary practices. These norms do not operate in isolation: the literature highlights that gender inequalities are caused by the interplay of multiple factors (with women’s unequal economic resources having a critical effect), while overlapping disadvantages affect lived experiences of inequalities. Other key factors are the region’s protracted conflicts; legal reform gaps and implementation challenges; socio-economic factors (including the impact of COVID-19); and governance trends (systemic corruption, growing conservatism, and negative narratives influenced by regional geopolitics). Together these limit women and girls’ empowerment; men and boys are also affected negatively in different ways, while LGBT+ people have become a particular target for societal discrimination in the region. Global evidence – showing that more gender unequal societies correlate with increased instability – provides a frame of reference for the region’s persistent gender inequalities.
