Abstract:

`Aziz Nasafi is among the most important Islamic mystics of the medieval period. His achievement was to integrate various ideas, including those of Ibn `Arabi and Najm al-Din Kubrä into a coherent whole, providing Persian speaking Sufis with an introduction to the speculative and practical dimensions of Sufism. This thesis is an attempt to present Nasafi's main teachings. After introducing his life, times and works, the second chapter focuses upon ontology. This is the spine of Nasafi's treatises and it is based upon the Sufi interpretation of God's incomparability and similarity (tanzih wa tashbih) and His infinite self-disclosure which occurs within a form processed by the imagination. The second chapter investigates the different forms of knowledge available to Sufis, which includes sense perception, reason and mystical knowledge. Nasafi's presentation depicts all three in a hierarchical structure with Sufi knowledge at the pinnacle. Having discussed the theoretical nature of Sufism, chapter four deals with the practical element of Sufism and how it is able to contribute to felicity in this life. Having followed the Sufi path, it is possible that a wayfarer may experience unity with God. This is examined in chapter five, and Nasafi's description is compared with that of other Sufis in an attempt to show his "orthodox" position within Sufism. It is also argued that modern models of mystical experience do not fit Nasafi's depiction of tashbih-tanzih, and that one also needs to re-think the idea of perennial philosophy. Finally, the perfection of man is considered through examining the relationship between Prophecy and Friendship of God. Sufis interpreted Friendship as the interior element of Prophecy and were able to offer new insights to Islamic doctrine.

This dissertation examines the interdisciplinarity field from reading the researches of geographer Aziz Ab Sáber and from phisical and agronomist engeneer Eneas Salati, with the purpose of linking Knowledge and Nature in their researches. The integrative perspective is present in both scientific legacy and seems to be what earned them significant discoveries about South-American Continent. The idea of interdisciplinary science building is essential to the analysis of contemporary thems, such as climate changes and the rapid and severe impacts of environmental degradation on the ecosystems balance and on the society. The knowledge about Nature of the scientisdt-explores who roamed the Americas is recovered in this study due to its importance of the institutionalization process of Modern Science. But also due to its participation on the Brazilian Geography building. This study is based on the ability of the pioneers in proposing universal laws from the observation of Earth s diversity, realizing a precise point of view in this endeavor, which emanates a particular conjunction of multiple knowledges. Interdisciplinary practice is seen as critical for the advancement of science today. Esta dissertação analisa o campo da interdisciplinaridade a partir da leitura das pesquisas do geógrafo Aziz Ab Sáber e do físico e engenheiro agrônomo Eneas Salati, procurando relacionar Conhecimento e Natureza em suas pesquisas. A perspectiva integradora está presente em ambos os legados científicos, e parece ser o que lhes rendeu as significantes descobertas sobre o continente sul-americano. A ideia de construção interdisciplinar em ciência é fundamental para a análise de temas contemporâneos, tais como as mudanças climáticas e os rápidos e severos impactos da degradação ambiental sobre o equilíbrio dos ecossistemas e para as sociedades. O conhecimento sobre a natureza dos cientistas-exploradores que percorreram as Américas é recuperado neste estudo pela importância no processo de institucionalização da Ciência Moderna. Mas igualmente por participar da construção da Geografia brasileira. Comment et avec quels moyens le roi Abdel-Aziz a-t-il réalisé la réunification de la péninsule arabique ? Son aventure se situe entre les deux guerres mondiales, après l'exclusion des ottomans du proche et Moyen-Orient et la partition de la région au profit des deux puissances mondiales de l'époque, France et Grande-Bretagne. Ibn Saoud réussit à chasser les ottomans, conquit Hail, Al Hidjaz, annexe Al Hasa. Istanbul reconnait le sultanat d’ibn Saoud sur Nedjd et ses dépendances. A la veille de la première guerre mondiale, la Grande-Bretagne pressa ibn Saoud de s'aligner sur ses positions. Il refusa, adopta une attitude de neutralité. A la veille de la deuxième guerre mondiale, il établit des relations amicales avec les Etats-Unis. Avec la découverte du pétrole dans la péninsule, les États-Unis devinrent les premiers soutiens d’ibn Saoud. Les relations entre les deux pays provoquèrent la colère des anglais : elles sonnèrent le glas de leur influence dans la région. Le caractère légendaire et la pensée wahhabite d’ibn Saoud lui permirent de soumettre les tribus rebelles. Ibn Saoud créa le mouvement des al ikhwan. Dès la fin de 1913 il se trouva à la tête d'une armée fidèle et nationaliste. Les conquêtes territoriales se multiplièrent. A la fin de la deuxième guerre mondiale, plusieurs conventions et traites délimitèrent les frontières du royaume avec les pays voisins. Des contestations relatives aux frontières persistent de nos jours après la réunification, ibn Saoud nomma son royaume : royaume d’Arabie saoudite
How and with what means did king Abdel-Aziz succeeded in the reunification of the Arab peninsula? His impact on the history of the region takes between the two world wars. A period the ottomans were excluded from the near and middle east and the region was dominated by two powers of that era, France and Great Britain. Ibn Saoud succeeded in driving out the ottomans, conquered hail, al Hidjaz, annexes al Hasa. Istanbul recognized the sultanate of the ibn Saoud in Nedjd and the surrounding areas. Just prior to the First World War, Great Britain pressured ibn Saoud to support in political position. He refused, adopting instead, a neutral position. Right before the Second World War, he established friendly relations with the United States. With the discovery of oil in the peninsula, the united states become the first supporters of ibn saoud. The relationship between the two countries gave rise to anger of the English as they no longer held a strategic position in the area. The legendary personality and "Wahhabi" way of thinking enabled ibn Saoud to dominate the rebel tribes. Ibn Saoud created the al ikhwan movement. At the end of 1913 he found himself at the head of a faithful and nationalist army. The territorial conquest grows in number. At the end of the Second World War, many conventions and treaties limited the borders between the kingdom and the neighbor countries. However, protests regarding these borders persist even today. After reunification, ibn Saoud gave to his kingdom the name Saudi Arabia

Abstract:

Dans le cadre du califat Umayyade nous avons étudié le règne de Umar II. Pour essayer de tracer une esquisse de son système politique qui consista essentiellement à tempérer toutes les tendances anti-umayyade au sein de l'état. Pour ce qui est de sa politique extérieure parallèlement au mouvement des conquêtes, il adopta un autre procédé pour la propagande de l'islam : la correspondance entre lui et l'empereur byzantin Léon III, entre lui et les souverains de l'Inde et du Sind. Pour ce qui est de l'administration il réorganisa la répartition des provinces et nomma de nouveaux gouverneurs et employés qui furent sujets à un contrôle sévère bien que la plupart d'entre eux soient des faqihs et des muhaddiths. Il instaura aussi de nouveaux (diwan) bureaux. Dans le domaine fiscale il interdit la perception de la capitation des nouveaux convertis à l'islam et interdit aussi la vente ou la concession des terres soumises à l'impôt foncier. Il était pour l'idée selon laquelle l'imam jouit d'un plein pouvoir sur le statut des terres soumises à l'impôt foncier (kharadj). Il faut souligner que la politique de Umar II était en quelques sortes une poursuite plus radicale de celle de son prédécesseur Suleyman qui a préparé l'avènement de son cousin Umar II à l'aide du faqih de la cour radja'b. Haywa. L'aspect fondamental de la personalite de "umar ii est que ce souverain Umayyade était un faqih et muhaddith (savant et transmetteur du hadith) médinois qui nous a laissé sans doute le premier musnad (recueil de hadith classifié selon les transmetteurs) qu'il rédigea officiellement
It is within the context of the Umayyad califate that one has endeavored to study the reign of this sovereign. In order to lay out an outline of his rule it is essential that we study his internal policy. In this particular field he managed to suppress all anti-Umayyad tendencies which were prevalent under the Damascus regime. With regard to his foreign policy he was in favor of the conquest and though his correspondence. With the byzantine emperor Leo III and the sovereigns of India and Sind. He also stands for propaganda of Islam. As for the administration of the sovereign he reorganized the reallocation of the provinces to some extent and he also appointed new governors and created new offices (diwan). As for as his tax system was concerned, he abolished the poll-tax collection from those who had been newly converted to Islam. Thus he prohibited the sale and concession of the land which was subjected to the land tax. One must emphasize that the political system of Umar was in same ways a radical continuation of his predecessor Suleiman who together with the court's faqihradja" b. Haywa contrived the succession of Umar II. The basic feature of his personality was that he was in every respect a medinian faih and muhaddith. Abstract:

The objective of the study is to apply Markov chain analysis to analyze student flow through King Abdul Aziz University (KAU) in Saudi Arabia, and to predict important metrics such as graduation and dropout rates. This objective arises from examination of the policies of KAU University. We begin with background information detailing the subject of study, then move into a general outline of stochastic processes. We then use these methods to construct a specific matrix of transition probabilities with data from the university student population. Finally, we discuss the calculation of the possibilities of transition between each level of study and the average time a student takes to complete each stage. The study uses Markov chains with these outcomes to analyze student retention data from the Department of Mathematics at KAU. From this analysis, the study will provide university policy recommendations that can be generalized to examine other universities.

Abstract:

Mothers’ socialization has been shown to impact prosocial tendencies in children. Discussions during joint book reading may provide a context to observe mothers’ strategies for evoking emotions. More specifically, mother-child talk about emotions, cognitive states, and inductive reasoning may enhance children’s perspective taking about characters experiencing diversity. However, mothers may differ in their amount and type of talk if the characters in the story are from an in-group or out-group. While not all mothers may engage in these strategies during book reading, evoking sympathy in children has been shown to predict children’s prosocial attitudes and behaviors toward others in need. The goal of this study was to explore mothers’ discourse strategies during a joint book reading task with first and second graders. Moreover, this study aimed to test whether reading and discussing a story about an in-group or out-group member differed and whether certain differences increased donating behavior and prosocial attitudes and from pre- to post-tests. In the main results, children’s donations did not significantly increase from pre-test to post-test as hypothesized nor did donations differ between the in-group or out-group story condition. However, children’s prosocial attitudes toward both in-group and out-group children improved equally from pre-test to post-test. Also as hypothesized, maternal discourse differed between story conditions. More specifically, there was an interaction between child gender and story condition where mothers with daughters used more emotion talk and cognitive state talk when discussing out-group members than did mothers with sons. Exploratory analyses revealed that mothers who used more emotion talk and inductive reasoning had children with lower prosocial attitudes when averaged across time of measurement toward both the in-group and out-group. Alternatively, children’s trait sympathy predicted higher average donations and prosocial attitudes. Finally, children’s civic identity scores predicted children’s average prosocial attitudes and maternal discourse variables (i.e., emotion words, cognitive state words, and number of inductive sequences). Future research should continue to investigate the relationship between children’s civic identity and maternal discourse, as this was the first study to explore the two. In conclusion, inducing sympathy in children may be an effective strategy for fostering more favorable attitudes toward other people in need regardless of their group identification. Additionally, individual child characteristics may predict children’s inclination to help others in need; however, aspects of mothers discourse may hinder such prosocial tendencies with children if they induce personal distress.

Abstract:

The present study investigates the composing processes and strategies in the written composition of final-year Saudi male students majoring in English at King Abdul-Aziz University. The aim of this investigation is to identify and analyse the writing processes of those students in order to understand some of the reasons behind their poor written output. It also aims to investigate the way skilled and less-skilled students compose their English writing, to classify the differences in the use of strategies between the two groups, and to study the impact of using strategies on the written product. Moreover, the thesis tries to gain a deeper understanding of the sub-processes of writing, such as planning, structuring, reviewing, and revising. To this end, data was collected that included written samples, a writing strategy questionnaire (WSQ), and think-aloud protocols (TAP). The findings of the data analysis indicate first that the students have problems at the sentential and intersentential levels. Second, the findings show that the students are conscious of writing strategies, so they are expected to plan, translate and edit their writing. Third, the findings of the WSQ reveal that students do not report what they actually do. Fourth, the results of the analysis of the TAPs show that the students used mainly meta-cognitive, cognitive, and affective strategies. However, only skilled students planned their writing globally or locally, and both skilled and less-skilled students were involved in the cognitive process.

The purpose of this study was to investigate concerns regarding the adoption of online teaching as expressed by faculty and instructors in six departments in the College of Arts and Humanities at King Abdulaziz University. Additionally, it investigated faculty professional development needs in adopting online teaching. The data in this study were obtained from 147 faculty members (response rate 63.9%). A non-experimental, cross-sectional survey design was used, incorporating the Stages of Concern Questionnaire. The data were analyzed using quantitative measures (descriptive data analysis and inferential analysis). This study utilized the Concerns Based Adoption Model as its theoretical framework. King Abdulaziz University faculty Stages of Concerns findings showed a mean score percentile of 87% of them as Unconcerned. The Informational stage showed a mean score percentile of 72%, and the Personal stage was the third highest with a mean score percentile of 70%. Refocusing, Collaboration, and Management were the fourth, fifth, and sixth highest stages of concern. The Consequence stage was the lowest stage of concern. The Stages of Concern Questionnaire had concerns that were generally aligned to nonusers or users who sometimes implement parts of online teaching. The data analysis regarding the participants’ personal characteristics indicated that their concerns in adopting online teaching were not influenced by their age, country of graduation, or years of teaching experience. A statistically significant difference was found in the participant concerns in adopting online teaching by gender, p<.05. The significance differences were found in stage one (Informational) (p<.05), stage two (Personal) (p<.01), and stage six (Refocusing) (p<.001). Likewise, the data analysis regarding the participants’ contextual characteristics indicated that their concerns in adopting online teaching were not influenced by their department or academic rank. A statistically significant difference was found in the participants’ concerns in adopting online teaching based on administrative support, p<.05. The significances were found in stages zero (Unconcerned) (p<.05) and three (Management) (p<.01). The data analysis regarding the technographic characteristics also indicated a statistically significant influence of participants' prior instructional technology use and technology-related professional development on their use of technology in teaching. The significance values were .000, .006, .009, and .030. The study concludes with recommendations for King Abdulaziz University regarding faculty adoption of online teaching and recommendations for future studies focused on professional development programs and the adoption of online teaching in King Abdulaziz University as well as in other Saudi universities.

Abstract:

This study investigates the use of Language Alternation (LA) between Arabic and English by the employees of King Abdul Aziz Specialist Hospital (KASH) from a socio-cultural perspective in order to explore the motivation behind LA practices in this multilingual medical workplace. There were 75 participants including doctors, nurses, and administrative employees. Most of the participants are Saudis, however some of them are nationals of other Arab countries and others are nonArab, in both cases having different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Data for this qualitative study were collected through observations, recording of naturally occurring interactions, and individual semi-structured interviews. The duration of the recorded material is nearly 35 hours. Using a combination of Interactional Sociolinguistics (Gumperz 1982), Politeness Theory (Brown & Levinson, 1987 and Scollon, et al., 2012), and Accommodation Theory (Giles & Powesland, 1975; Giles, 1973; Giles et al., 1987 and Giles, et al., 1991) as a theoretical framework, the findings from the data were grouped in themes and analysed in order to find out the reasons for and functions of LA. The results of the analysis indicate that the use of LA among the employees of KASH was generated by two major types of factors: institutional factors, due to which participants appeared to switch from one language to another because of conditions and/or constraints arising from the institutional setting, and cultural factors, which appeared to result in participants alternating between Arabic and English due to certain cultural beliefs and norms delineating cultural differences and overcoming cultural issues arising from the use of a foreign language. The major findings of this study include that LA is used to resolve communication difficulties, to facilitate effective communication using particular technical concepts and expressions, to negotiate power, hierarchy and personal relationships, to avoid using certain Arabic terms that are regarded as sensitive by some listeners, and to preserve the meaning of certain terms and expressions by using them in one particular language rather than the other, especially those regarded as formulaic chunks with specific cultural significance. The study concludes with research implications, implications for medical authorities and educators, and recommendations for future research.

Abstract:

Langue optionnelle, intervenant seulement au niveau de l'université, le français n'attire que peu d'étudiants en Arabie Saoudite, et ses modalités d'enseignement transmissives ne suscitent guère la motivation. Cherchant comment améliorer son enseignement, comment enseigner autrement cette langue, comment initier une pratique vivante de la langue et obtenir des apprentissages durables, nous nous sommes orientée vers la pédagogie du projet. Nous avons ainsi, dans la section féminine de français de l'Université Roi Abdul Aziz, pu tester la faisabilité d'une introduction de cette méthodologie, et mettre à l'épreuve son efficacité dans le cadre d'un projet de promotion de la cuisine du Moyen-Orient. Cette expérimentation a eu lieu au cours du deuxième semestre de l'année 2010-2011 avec douze étudiantes de niveau A2. Inscrit dans une perspective actionnelle, ce projet supposait la réalisation d'un certain nombre de tâches, et intégrait les TIC. Il s'agissait en effet de produire un livret électronique de cuisine et de le diffuser sur des sites culinaires francophones. À l'aune des résultats de cette étude de cas, force est de reconnaître que l'introduction de la pédagogie du projet se heurte, dans ce contexte particulier, à certaines limites (des obstacles dus aux représentations, au contexte socioculturel, au fait qu'il s'agisse pour les apprenantes comme pour l'enseignante d'une expérience inédite, et surtout au manque de temps). Mais, il s'avère également que les étudiantes ont su s'approprier cette nouvelle pédagogie, saisir cette occasion de concrétiser leurs apprentissages, de travailler en équipe, d'apprendre en agissant et de réinvestir leurs compétences non langagières.
