The main purpose of this study is to examine the double identity in Begag’s le Gone du Chaâba. Taken between two completely different cultures, the beur writer exploited the language to translate and transmit this duality. Le Gone du Chaâba is a 1986 novel by Azouz Begag, a French-born author of Algerian parentage, who offers an autobiographical glimpse of his childhood in and around Lyon. Set in the 1960’s, the novel presents Azouz navigating his experience between the slum where his family lives and the various French schools he attends. The text traces the issues of children of immigrants who essentially live between four language varieties: a cherished, formal Arabic, a version of Arabic or Berber spoken at home (rarely studied in written form), a “proper” French learned in school, and slang French spoken with friends. This study will explore the language issues as they appear in Begag’s le Gone du Chaâba, where they contribute to the process of identity formation for the child Azouz. In this novel the narrator presents himself as the voice of an individual who negotiates a place in an environment in the course of creation.

Cette analyse nous a permis de mettre en lumière l'existence de deux discours. Le premier est lié à la masse dominante, les franco-français, et traduit une méconnaissance du sujet, les franco-maghrébins ; on prête à l'autre une mentalité, voire des traits physiques qui l'éloignent ou qui l'excluent de la " norme européenne ". Ces " Beurs " deviennent le produit d'un transfert de l'inquiétude environnante liée à la crise économique, politique et sociale. Le deuxième est la légalisation de l'existence des Beurs par eux-mêmes. Masqués, souvent, par le rire et par un faux détachement, ces Beurs tentent de s'affirmer comme citoyens français à part entière en soulignant leurs différences culturelles et en démontrant qu'en aucun cas, ces différences sont contraires aux valeurs de la République Française. C'est un discours pacifiste empreint de valeurs universelles<br>This analysis has allowed us to shed light on the existence of two existence of two discourses. The first, which is linked to the dominant social group, the "French French", reveals on ignorance of the "French Maghrebis". The latter are perceived as possessing a certain mentality, or even physical characteristics, which distance or exclude them from the "European norm". This concept of the "Beurs" is a discursive construct linked to the contemporary economic, political and social crises. The second is the discourse by which the "Beurs" attempt to legitimize their own existence, often masking this goal behind humour and apparent detachment. Their aim is to assert their identity as full French citizens by underscoring their cultural differences and showing that such differences are in no way contrary to the values of the French Republic. Theirs is an essentially pacifist discourse, marked by universal values

Cette thèse, située dans le contexte post-Colonial au Japon, s’articule autour d’un concept crée par Yang Seog-Il, écrivain contemporain zainichi : le « corps asiatique ». Après avoir circonscrit le champ d’analyse couvert par ce terme, notre étude formule la problématique suivante : par quels moyens ce « corps asiatique » s’affronte, dans la littérature de Yang -Dite zainichi-, au dépassement de l’ère coloniale et post-Coloniale au Japon ? Au cours de cette étude, nous recourrons à l’intertexte de la littérature maghrébine d’expression française (de Azouz Begag en particulier) lu comme dans un miroir. La première partie cartographie les contextes socio-Historiques de ces deux populations diasporiques, formées de décolonisés -Zainichi au Japon et Français issus de l’immigration maghrébine en France- apparues au siècle dernier, ainsi que le processus de formation des catégories littéraires associées à ces populations. Ensuite, nous entrons dans la profondeur du corpus, en abordant la manifestation de la subjectivité des (ex-) colonisés en tant que corps asiatique, à l’aide de l’épistémologie de Mikhaïl Bakhtine. La troisième partie enfin, est consacrée à une nouvelle lecture de ces œuvres, en établissant un lien entre le thème littéraire du parricide et le « corps asiatique ». Fils du Japon post-Colonial, Yang Seog-Il désire éliminer et dépasser un père tant filial que symbolique. Cependant, sa tentative de dépassement qui se veut passer par la féminisation de ce « corps asiatique » nous invite à effectuer une ultime lecture sous l’angle de la critique féministe post-Coloniale, pour en dévoiler les restes de rapports de domination<br>In the context of post-Colonial Japan this dissertation attaches itself to explore the concept of a contemporary writer, a so-Called Zainichi: Yang Seog-Il’s “Asiatic body”. Having defined the field of interpretations covered by this term, our central question will be: in Yang Seog-Il’s literature how is the “Asiatic body” engaged in a process of overcoming this colonial and post-Colonial era? While reading Yang’s works, we shall use as an intertext and a mirror, some literary cases of contemporary francophone North African descendant writers (especially Azouz Begag’s texts). The first part shall map the socio-Historical context of these two diasporic populations (the Decolonized Zainichi in Japan and the Descendant from North African immigrants in France), that appeared in the last century, and in the same time, the birth of their so-Called post-Colonial literature. In the second part, we intend to make an in-Depth interpretation of our corpus, in taking up the manifestation of subjectivity of the (ex) colonized as the “Asiatic body”, using the Mikhaïl Bakhtine’s epistemology. The third part at last is devoted to a new reading of the literary works we are interested in: by establishing a link between the parricide as a literary theme and the “Asiatic body”, the wish of the son of post-Colonial Japan, Yang Seog-Il, to eliminate the father appears to renegotiate symbolical aspects that must be analysed. Hence, the feminization of the “Asiatic body” undertaken by Yang has to be read under the light of a feminist post-Colonial criticism that might uncover new themes of domination

A l'intersection de la littérature comparée, des études de genre et des études postcoloniales, cette thèse vise à étudier le renouveau du Bildungsroman chez trois auteurs français contemporains : Azouz Begag, Farida Belghoul et Leïla Sebbar. Ce travail s'intéresse aux modalités des tensions sociales dont les protagonistes font l'expérience pendant leurs interactions avec la société dominante. Nous nous efforçons de comprendre comment ces trois auteurs déplacent les conventions du genre littéraire du Bildungsroman traditionnel pour négocier les obstacles sociaux qu’ils rencontrent et pour ménager des espaces limitrophes vivables dans et au-delà des espaces imposés par la société. La première partie de notre travail s'attache à reconsidérer les voies d'analyse traditionnelles de la « littérature beur », corpus dont font partie les romans des trois auteurs. La deuxième partie explore la façon dont ces textes renouvellent le genre du Bildungsroman notamment en problématisant l’expérience des jeunes personnages principaux de parents immigrés algériens dans la société française. L'acte de nommer et la dichotomie école-famille constituent les voies d'entrée principales dans l'analyse des romans. La troisième partie se focalise sur les stratégies textuelles et narratives par lesquelles les trois auteurs mettent en scène l'inscription des corps vus comme étrangers dans les espaces publics de la Métropole et par lesquelles ils proposent de nouvelles narrations pour inscrire l’expérience postcoloniale des jeunes protagonistes dans l’écriture. L'ironie, la subversion du regard et l'appropriation des espaces transitoires et limitrophes se trouvent ainsi au centre de notre analyse<br>At the intersection of comparative literature, gender studies and postcolonial studies, this dissertation aims to study the renewal of the Bildungsroman in the novels of three contemporary French authors: Azouz Begag, Farida Belghoul and Leïla Sebbar. This work focuses on how the novels of the three writers express the social tensions the young protagonists are subjected to during their interactions with the dominant society. We strive to analyze how the conventions of the literary genre of the traditional Bildungsroman shift subtly in order to inscribe the social barriers in the textual body of literature and to propose border zones in place of the dominant society as living spaces. The first part of our work seeks to reconsider the traditional avenues of the analysis of littérature beur, the corpus of which the three authors belong to. The second part tackles the renewal of the genre of the Bildungsroman in these texts by in particular problematizing the presence of these young protagonists of Algerian immigrant descent in the French society. The act of naming and the dichotomy of school and family constitute the main entry point in the analysis of the novels. The third part concentrates on the textual and narrative strategies by which the three authors realize the inscription of bodies seen as foreign in the public spaces of the Métropole and by which they propose new narratives to set in writing the postcolonial experience of the young protagonists. The irony, the subversive gaze and the appropriation of transitory and border zones lie at the center of our analysis

Ce corpus de 116 titres est composé d’albums fictionnels et documentaires, de bandes dessinées, de roman, de nouvelles, de livres CD, de pièce de théâtre. La première partie est consacrée à l’étude de ce corpus, de ses auteurs, de ses thématiques, et en particulier celles du voyage et de l’exil. Le concept de migrance est construit à partir de ses liens avec la résilience et la reliance. La deuxième partie vise à interroger l’état d’enfance, à la fois de façon historique et poétique, jusque dans ces innovations iconographiques. Le sujet de cette thèse est l'étude de l'espace dans le roman frontalier, ayant comme exemple trois romans qui appartiennent à la littérature de l'immigration de trois pays : la littérature beure en France, la littérature immigrante d'origine hai͏̈tienne au Canada et la littérature chicana aux États-Unis. Nous avons étudié Le Gone du Chaâba d'Azouz Begag, Comment faire l'amour avec un nègre sans se fatiguer de Dany Laferrière et Peregrinos de Aztlán de Miguel Méndez. Le thème de ces romans est la migration et la rencontre entre deux cultures ainsi que le difficile processus d'assimilation/intégration des personnages à l'espace étranger. D'un façon générale, nous introduisions la notion de frontière et de zones de contact, où la littérature frontalière surgit. Ensuite, l'espace est étudié à un niveau général comme l'espace d'arrivée des étrangers et aussi l'espace d'origine de ceux-ci. C'est dans l'espace d'arrivée où se produit la rencontre entre les étrangers et les autochtones, montrés comme représentations collectives. Nous analysons l'organisation spatiale des romans, d'abord à partir de la notion d'espace extérieur et d'espace intérieur, ainsi que la fenêtre et la porte comme des éléments médiateurs entre les deux espaces. D'après cette première structure de l'espace, nous trouvons trois niveaux spatiaux : l'espace privé, l'espace collectif et l'espace public. D'autres espaces s'ouvrent : l'espace onirique, l'espace illusoire et celui construit par l'imagination des personnages à travers l'écriture. Un autre espace apparaît comme résultat de l'imaginaire collectif, c'est l'espace stéréotypé qui est une image déformée des lieux que les personnages ne connaissent pas. Les rapports entre deux cultures, dans un espace qui devient par ces biais un espace frontalier, sont repris à la fin de la thèse, à partir de la notion de frontière développée par Michel Butor, ce qui permet de rassembler tous les éléments remarqués dans notre travail<br>The topic of this dissertation is the study of space in the novel of the border and it is based upon three novels which belong to the literature of immigration of three countries : the beur literature in France, the literature of immigration of haitian origin in Canada and the chicana literature in the United States. We have studied Le Gone du Chaâba written by Azouz Begag, Comment faire l'amour avec un nègre sans se fatiguer by Dany Laferrière, and Peregrinos de Aztlán by Miguel Méndez. The topic of these novels is migration and the encounter between two cultures ; it is also about the difficult process of assimilation/integration of characters within the foreign space. First, we present the notion of the border and of the contact zones where the literature of the border springs out. Then the space under scrutiny is studied as the general space where foreigners arrive as much as the space of origin for them. It is within this space of arrival that the encounter between foreigners and nationals occurs, and is shown as collective representation. We analyse the organization of space in the novels, starting first from the notions of inner and outer space, then focusing on the window and the door as mediating elements between two spaces. From this first structure of space, we have found out three levels of space : the space of the private, the collective space and the public space. Other spaces open up : the oniric space, the illusory space and the one built by the characters' imagination through writing. Another space appears as the result of the collective imaginary world, this stereotypical space which is a distorted image of places that characters do not recognize. The relationships between two cultures in a space that becomes space of the border are called back at the end of my thesis and rely on the notion of border developed by Michel Butor which allows to gather all the elements pointed out in our research

Cette these a pour point de depart a la fois une observation relative a l'evolution de l'usage ironique dans le texte maghrebin, durant une periode conflictuelle pour le maghreb, celle des annees quatre-vingts, et une double question : en quoi l'ironie peutelle temoigner de ce conflit, et pourquoi ce choix nouveau ? afin de raisonner cela, les objectifs suivants ont ete arretes : degager, en ce qui concerne l'ironie, ses modes de transmission, ses mecanismes ainsi que ses fonctions, dans le cadre d'une communication auteur lecteur. Ainsi, la premiere partie de ce travail definit operationnellement l'ironie, presente le corpus et elabore un canevas de lecture. Puis, l'analyse suit deux perspectives : la semiologie, avec la lecture des epitextes, et la narratologie, avec la lecture des extraits suivant les modes du narrateur, du personnage et de la situation. Les conclusions montrent que l'origine de l'ironie est conflictuelle, et que ses fonctions, quant a elles, sont generalement destinees a l'exteriorisation ou et a la contestation, pour deboucher sur une finalite heuristique. Cela constitue donc une reelle evolution dans le regard, l'ecriture et les rapports auteur lecteur, dans la litterature maghrebine d'expression francaise d'alors<br>As a starting point, this thesis bases on an observation related to the evolution of the use of irony in the literary text from the maghreb of the eighties, a difficult period. In order to reason this, the following objectives have been drawn : to derive, with regard to irony, its transmission modes, its mechanisms as well as its functions, as part of an author reader communication. Thus, the first part of this work defines irony, operationally, presents the corpus and elaborates a reading frame. Then, the analysis follows two perspectives : that of semiology, with the reading of the epitexts, and that of narratology, with the reading of the extracts, according to the narrator, the character and the situation modes. The conclusions show that irony has a conflicting origin, and that its functions are generally meant for the exteriorization and or anti-establishment, to lead to a heuristic aim. It constitutes, therefore, a real evolution in the glance, the writing and the author reader relations, in the french written literature from the maghreb of that time

Die vorliegende wissenschaftliche Arbeit befasst sich mit der Rezeption der algerischen französischsprachigen Literatur im deutschsprachigen literarischen Feld, bzw. im Verlagsgebiet, in der deutschsprachigen Öffentlichkeit und in der romanistischen Literaturwissenschaft. Ziel der Arbeit ist, den paratextuellen Diskurs zu untersuchen, der die literarischen Texte algerischer französischsprachiger Autoren in einen neuen sprachlichen und literarischen Kontext transferiert und dabei die Rolle der verschiedenen Akteure des literarischen Feldes (Verleger, Übersetzer, Literaturkritiker und Literaturwissenschaftler) im kulturellen Transfer und im interkulturellen Dialog aufzuzeigen. Diese Arbeit will einen Beitrag dazu leisten, den interkulturellen Austausch und den Dialog zwischen Algerien und dem deutschsprachigen Raum aufzuzeigen. Die zentrale Fragestellung richtet sich auf die Art des Interesses an der algerischen französischsprachigen Literatur, einer Literatur aus der arabisch-islamischen Welt, im deutschsprachigen Raum: Wie und in welchem Kontext werden literarische Werke algerischer Autoren im deutschsprachigen literarischen Feld rezipiert? Warum wird von wem was wie selektiert, veröffentlicht und rezipiert? Im Zentrum der Darstellung steht der Rezipient und seine Wahrnehmungsweise, seine Lesemotivation und seine Produktionsbedingungen. Es lässt sich anhand dieser Rezeptionsforschung herausstellen, dass die Rezeptionssituation der algerischen französischsprachigen Literatur im deutschsprachigen literarischen Feld nicht allgemein beurteilt werden kann. Es lassen sich Unterschiede in den Rezeptionsmodi dieser Literatur bei den einzelnen Rezipienten innerhalb derselben literarischen Vermittlungsinstanz erkennen. Allgemein betrachtet lässt sich sagen, dass es um eine mangelhafte Präsenz der algerischen französischsprachigen Literatur im deutschsprachigen literarischen Feld handelt. Es ist eher die Rede von der Rezeption der bekanntesten Autoren, die jedoch auf dem persönlichen Interesse einzelner Rezipienten beruht. In den meisten Fällen lässt sich die Wahrnehmungsweise dieser Literatur als eine faktuale Rezeption beurteilen: Die politisch-historischen Ereignisse (algerischer Befreiungskrieg: 1954-1962, Bürgerkrieg: 1990er, arabische Revolution 2011), und die soziokulturelle Situation bzw. die Situation der Frau im Islam scheinen wesentliche Faktoren zu sein, die die Rezeption dieser Literatur fördern und zu einer „reduktionistischen“ Lektüre dieser Literatur führen. Die Beschäftigung mit dieser Literatur hängt mit verschiedenen Faktoren zusammen, die den Rezeptionsprozess beeinflussen. Einerseits ist die fehlende Anwesenheit dieser Literatur auf dem deutschsprachigen „Buchmarkt“ mit dem geringen Kenntnisstand über die Herkunftskultur der Autoren begründet, was letztendlich auf die Frage der literarischen Sozialisation zurückzuführen ist. Andererseits spielen die Verhältnisse des „Buchmarktes“, wo das Zentralanliegen der Verlage die Bedürfnisse des potentiellen Lesers darstellen, neben den spezifischen literarischen Bedingtheiten für die Rezeption (z.B. Vorerfahrung mit literarischen Texten französischsprachiger Autoren maghrebinischer Herkunft) einen wesentlichen Einfluss auf die Lektüre und die Vermittlungsart dieser Literatur. In der romanistischen Literaturwissenschaft lässt sich anhand der in dieser Arbeit dargestellten wissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen zum Werk Assia Djebars und Maïssa Beys eine neue Tendenz in der Wahrnehmung dieser Literatur feststellen. Untersuchungen zu nicht thematischen Aspekten in der algerischen französischsprachigen Literatur wurden vorgenommen, in denen ein kritischer Blick in die bisher herrschenden Leseart literarischer Texte algerischer Autoren entworfen wird. Dabei ist es als kritisch zu betrachten, dass die literarischen Texte französischer Sprache von Autoren maghrebinischer Herkunft im Kontext eines weiten Feldes von „problematischen“ Begriffen wie die der „Postkolonial“, „Hybridität“, „Littérature beur“ besprochen werden, was zum Schluss zu der Frage führt: Sind diese Begriffe brauchbare Konzepte für die Analyse literarischer Texte, die durch Interkulturalität geprägt sind, wie die literarischen Texte algerischer französischsprachiger Autoren?

This chapter examines two opposing viewpoints regarding minority authorship in France in the mid-1980s in the context of the aftermath of the Marche des Beurs period. In his interviews for his quasi-autobiographical novels Le gone du Chaâba (1986) and Béni ou le paradis privé (1988) Azouz Begag strongly promoted his special expertise as a representative of the beur population. He readily volunteered to educated his interviewers and viewers about life in France’s North African immigrant communities and rarely discussed his books in detail. Farida Belghoul, on the other hand, argued forcefully for an exclusively artistic reading of her novel Georgette! (1986). She attacked journalists who imposed an ethnic frame on her work and criticized other authors of North African descent of writing too simplistically. In the end Belghoul’s commentary did not attract television journalists and she only appeared on a few highly specialized radio shows. Begag’s arguments therefore reached a much wider audience and played a stronger role in contributing to how novels by authors from the beur population were read in the mid- to late-1980s.
