Abstract:
The Azure Kinect, the successor of Kinect v1 and Kinect v2, is a depth sensor. In this paper we evaluate the skeleton tracking abilities of the new sensor, namely accuracy and precision (repeatability). Firstly, we state the technical features of all three sensors, since we want to put the new Azure Kinect in the context of its previous versions. Then, we present the experimental results of general accuracy and precision obtained by measuring a plate mounted to a robotic manipulator end effector which was moved along the depth axis of each sensor and compare them. In the second experiment, we mounted a human-sized figurine to the end effector and placed it in the same positions as the test plate. Positions were located 400 mm from each other. In each position, we measured relative accuracy and precision (repeatability) of the detected figurine body joints. We compared the results and concluded that the Azure Kinect surpasses its discontinued predecessors, both in accuracy and precision. It is a suitable sensor for human–robot interaction, body-motion analysis, and other gesture-based applications. Our analysis serves as a pilot study for future HMI (human–machine interaction) designs and applications using the new Kinect Azure and puts it in the context of its successful predecessors.

In this paper we perform brief data analysis and comparison of all Kinect versions with focus on precision (repeatability) and various aspects of noise of these three sensors. Then we thoroughly evaluate the new Azure Kinect; namely its warm-up time, precision (and sources of its variability), accuracy (thoroughly, using a robotic arm), reflectivity (using 18 different materials), and the multipath and flying pixel phenomenon. Furthermore, we validate its performance in both indoor and outdoor environments, including direct and indirect sun conditions. We conclude with a discussion on its improvements in the context of the evolution of the Kinect sensor. It was shown that it is crucial to choose well designed experiments to measure accuracy, since the RGB and depth camera are not aligned. Our measurements confirm the officially stated values, namely standard deviation ≤17 mm, and distance error <11 mm in up to 3.5 meters distance from the sensor in all four supported modes. The device, however, has to be warmed up for at least 40–50 min to give stable results. Due to the time-of-flight technology, the Azure Kinect cannot be reliably used in direct sunlight. Therefore, it is convenient mostly for indoor applications.

Abstract:
A tool for human pose estimation and quantification using consumer-level equipment is a long-pursued objective. Many studies have employed the Microsoft Kinect v2 depth camera but with recent release of the new Kinect Azure a revision is required. This work researches the specific case of estimating the range of motion in five upper limb exercises using four different pose estimation methods. These exercises were recorded with the Kinect Azure camera and assessed with the OptiTrack motion tracking system as baseline. The statistical analysis consisted of evaluation of intra-rater reliability with intra-class correlation, the Pearson correlation coefficient and Bland–Altman statistical procedure. The modified version of the OpenPose algorithm with the post-processing algorithm PoseFix had excellent reliability with most intra-class correlations being over 0.75. The Azure body tracking algorithm had intermediate results. The results obtained justify clinicians employing these methods, as quick and low-cost simple tools, to assess upper limb angles.

Abstract:
Eight depth cameras varying in operational principle (stereoscopy: ZED, ZED2, OAK-D; IR active stereoscopy: Real Sense D435; time of flight (ToF): Real Sense L515, Kinect v2, Blaze 101, Azure Kinect) were compared in context of use for in-orchard fruit localization and sizing. For this application, a specification on bias-corrected root mean square error of 20 mm for a camera-to-fruit distance of 2 m and operation under sunlit field conditions was set. The ToF cameras achieved the measurement specification, with a recommendation for use of Blaze 101 or Azure Kinect made in terms of operation in sunlight and in orchard conditions. For a camera-to-fruit distance of 1.5 m in sunlight, the Azure Kinect measurement achieved an RMSE of 6 mm, a bias of 17 mm, an SD of 2 mm and a fill rate of 100% for depth values of a central 50 × 50 pixels group. To enable inter-study comparisons, it is recommended that future assessments of depth cameras for this application should include estimation of a bias-corrected RMSE and estimation of bias on estimated camera-to-fruit distances at 50 cm intervals to 3 m, under both artificial light and sunlight, with characterization of image distortion and estimation of fill rate.

Abstract:
Gait analysis is an important tool for the early detection of neurological diseases and for the assessment of risk of falling in elderly people. The availability of low-cost camera hardware on the market today and recent advances in Machine Learning enable a wide range of clinical and health-related applications, such as patient monitoring or exercise recognition at home. In this study, we evaluated the motion tracking performance of the latest generation of the Microsoft Kinect camera, Azure Kinect, compared to its predecessor Kinect v2 in terms of treadmill walking using a gold standard Vicon multi-camera motion capturing system and the 39 marker Plug-in Gait model. Five young and healthy subjects walked on a treadmill at three different velocities while data were recorded simultaneously with all three camera systems. An easy-to-administer camera calibration method developed here was used to spatially align the 3D skeleton data from both Kinect cameras and the Vicon system. With this calibration, the spatial agreement of joint positions between the two Kinect cameras and the reference system was evaluated. In addition, we compared the accuracy of certain spatio-temporal gait parameters, i.e., step length, step time, step width, and stride time calculated from the Kinect data, with the gold standard system. Our results showed that the improved hardware and the motion tracking algorithm of the Azure Kinect camera led to a significantly higher accuracy of the spatial gait parameters than the predecessor Kinect v2, while no significant differences were found between the temporal parameters. Furthermore, we explain in detail how this experimental setup could be used to continuously monitor the progress during gait rehabilitation in older people.

The use of human gesturing to interact with devices such as computers or smartphones has presented several problems. This form of interaction relies on gesture interaction technology such as Leap Motion from Leap Motion, Inc, which enables humans to use hand gestures to interact with a computer. The technology has excellent hand detection performance, and even allows simple games to be played using gestures. Another example is the contactless use of a smartphone to take a photograph by simply folding and opening the palm. Research on interaction with other devices via hand gestures is in progress. Similarly, studies on the creation of a hologram display from objects that actually exist are also underway. We propose a hand gesture recognition system that can control the Tabletop holographic display based on an actual object. The depth image obtained using the latest Time-of-Flight based depth camera Azure Kinect is used to obtain information about the hand and hand joints by using the deep-learning model CrossInfoNet. Using this information, we developed a real time system that defines and recognizes gestures indicating left, right, up, and down basic rotation, and zoom in, zoom out, and continuous rotation to the left and right.

Abstract:
(1) Dynamic knee valgus is a predisposing factor for anterior cruciate ligament rupture and osteoarthritis. The single-leg squat (SLS) test is a widely used movement pattern test in clinical practice that helps to assess the risk of lower-limb injury. We aimed to quantify the SLS test using a marker-less optical system. (2) Kinect validity and accuracy during SLS were established by marker-based OptiTrack and MVN Xsens motion capture systems. Then, 22 individuals with moderate knee symptoms during sports activities (Tegner > 4, Lysholm > 60) performed SLS, and this was recorded and analyzed with a Kinect Azure camera and the Dynaknee software. (3) An optical sensor coupled to an artificial-intelligence-based joint recognition algorithm gave a comparable result to traditional marker-based motion capture devices. The dynamic valgus sign quantified by the Q-angle at the lowest point of the squat is highly dependent on squat depth, which severely limits its comparability among subjects. In contrast, the medio-lateral shift of the knee midpoint at a fixed squat depth, expressed in the percentage of lower limb length, is more suitable to quantify dynamic valgus and compare values among individual patients. (4) The current study identified a new and reliable way of evaluating dynamic valgus of the knee joint by measuring the medial shift of the knee-over-foot at a standardized squat depth. Using a marker-less optical system widens the possibilities of evaluating lower limb functional instabilities for medical professionals.

Requirement for rehabilitation from injuries is a major requirement for several victims of injury and trauma in recent days. Several mechanisms for patient engagement such as videogames and so on are developed for therapy and mental simulation. In this paper, a Virtual Reality (VR) gaming system is developed integrating electromyography (EMG) signals and integrating motion capture. Yei-3 space sensors or Azure Kinect, Myo armband and Saitek’s rudder foot pedal provides the inputs to the motion capture system. The user input is measured in terms of bicep or muscle efforts. A HTC Vive VR headset is used that is synchronised with the sensors for the videogame sequence controls. The system is tested on 15 subjects and provided 96% accurate control results.

Abstract:
The three-dimensional reconstruction method using RGB-D camera has a good balance in hardware cost and point cloud quality. However, due to the limitation of inherent structure and imaging principle, the acquired point cloud has problems such as a lot of noise and difficult registration. This paper proposes a 3D reconstruction method using Azure Kinect to solve these inherent problems. Shoot color images, depth images and near-infrared images of the target from six perspectives by Azure Kinect sensor with black background. Multiply the binarization result of the 8-bit infrared image with the RGB-D image alignment result provided by Microsoft corporation, which can remove ghosting and most of the background noise. A neighborhood extreme filtering method is proposed to filter out the abrupt points in the depth image, by which the floating noise point and most of the outlier noise will be removed before generating the point cloud, and then using the pass-through filter eliminate rest of the outlier noise. An improved method based on the classic iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm is presented to merge multiple-views point clouds. By continuously reducing both the size of the down-sampling grid and the distance threshold between the corresponding points, the point clouds of each view are continuously registered three times, until get the integral color point cloud. Many experiments on rapeseed plants show that the success rate of cloud registration is 92.5% and the point cloud accuracy obtained by this method is 0.789 mm, the time consuming of a integral scanning is 302 s, and with a good color restoration. Compared with a laser scanner, the proposed method has considerable reconstruction accuracy and a significantly ahead of the reconstruction speed, but the hardware cost is much lower when building a automatic scanning system. This research shows a low-cost, high-precision 3D reconstruction technology, which has the potential to be widely used for non-destructive measurement of rapeseed and other crops phenotype.

Abstract:
RGB-D cameras have been commercialized, and many applications using them have been proposed. In this paper, we propose a robust registration method of multiple RGB-D cameras. We use a human body tracking system provided by Azure Kinect SDK to estimate a coarse global registration between cameras. As this coarse global registration has some error, we refine it using feature matching. However, the matched feature pairs include mismatches, hindering good performance. Therefore, we propose a registration refinement procedure that removes these mismatches and uses the global registration. In an experiment, the ratio of inliers among the matched features is greater than 95% for all tested feature matchers. Thus, we experimentally confirm that mismatches can be eliminated via the proposed method even in difficult situations and that a more precise global registration of RGB-D cameras can be obtained.

This paper presents a personalized clothing customization system using Augmented Reality (AR) technology. The goal of this paper is creating a more interactive and immersive experience for tailor designer by bridging physical personalized clothing customization and digital resources. This system can make the traditional clothing customization process more convenient and efficient and has strong interaction and experience. At the same time, it reduces the time cost, labor cost and material cost of sample making in the traditional clothing customization process. This paper discusses the feasibility of the system, introduces the system development, testing, and application environment, the overall system design scheme and system workflow, and details the specific functions of each module. It also introduces the system detection methods and observation indicators. The system uses technologies such as augmented reality (AR) technology, Azure Kinect somatosensory technology, and OpenGL 3D rendering, combined with the functional advantages of the somatosensory virtual fitting system, focusing on the improvement and role of AR technology in the clothing customization process, effectively improving user satisfaction with clothing customization and saves production time and costs.

Sheep body segmentation robot can improve production hygiene, product quality, and cutting accuracy, which is a huge change for traditional manual segmentation. With reference to the New Zealand sheep body segmentation specification, a vision system for Cartesian coordinate robot cutting half-sheep was developed and tested. The workflow of the vision system was designed and the image acquisition device with an Azure Kinect sensor was developed. Furthermore, a LabVIEW software with the image processing algorithm was then integrated with the RGBD image acquisition device in order to construct an automatic vision system. Based on Deeplab v3+ networks, an image processing system for locating ribs and spine was employed. Taking advantage of the location characteristics of ribs and spine in the split half-sheep, a calculation method of cutting line based on the key points is designed to determine five cutting curves. The seven key points are located by convex points of ribs and spine and the root of hind leg. Using the conversion relation between depth image and the space coordinates, the 3D coordinates of the curves were computed. Finally, the kinematics equation of the rectangular coordinate robot arm is established, and the 3D coordinates of the curves are converted into the corresponding motion parameters of the robot arm. The experimental results indicated that the automatic vision system had a success rate of 98.4% in the cutting curves location, 4.2 s time consumption per half-sheep, and approximately 1.3 mm location error. The positioning accuracy and speed of the vision system can meet the requirements of the sheep cutting production line. The vision system shows that there is potential to automate even the most challenging processing operations currently carried out manually by human operators.

Background:Telemedicine can be performed using a conventional videophone or web conferencing system. Then, joint lesions can only be observed and inferred from two-dimensional images, and it is difficult to perform accurate joint assessments, which is essential for the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).Objectives:To develop the next-generation online telemedicine system utilizing mixed reality for RA.Methods:We have developed a system that can assess joints accurately in three-dimensions images in real-time, using Azure Kinect DK (depth sensor)/ HoloLens 2 (headset), which are mixed reality technologies, and Teams (online interview/chat) provided by Microsoft. Furthermore, by applying artificial intelligence (AI), we plan to implement additionally to this system 1) a function to quickly catch and automatically evaluate the patient’s anxiety and changes in facial expressions at the time of examination, 2) a function to record dialogue with the patient in chronological order, 3) a function to support the detection of swollen joints, and 4) function to automatically analyze the questionnaire.Results:This system remotely connects a rheumatologist in the Nagasaki University Hospital (Nagasaki City, urban area) and a patient with RA and a non- rheumatologist in the Goto Central Hospital (Goto Island, rural area). A three-dimensional hologram of the patient’s hand projected in front of a rheumatologist. Using this system, we are able to evaluate joints more accurately than using a conventional videophone or web conferencing system.Conclusion:It is expected that this system will enable remote medical care specializing in rheumatology, which is standardized at a high level even in areas without rheumatologists such as remote islands and remote areas. This system remotely connects Nagasaki City and Goto Island, but due to the performance of the system, it is not limited to these areas and it is possible to connect rheumatologists to any area that can be connected to the network. Abstract:
This paper presents a personalized clothing customization system using Augmented Reality (AR) technology. The goal of this paper is creating a more interactive and immersive experience for tailor designer by bridging physical personalized clothing customization and digital resources. This system can make the traditional clothing customization process more convenient and efficient and has strong interaction and experience. At the same time, it reduces the time cost, labor cost and material cost of sample making in the traditional clothing customization process. This paper discusses the feasibility of the system, introduces the system development, testing, and application environment, the overall system design scheme and system workflow, and details the specific functions of each module. It also introduces the system detection methods and observation indicators. The system uses technologies such as augmented reality (AR) technology, Azure Kinect somatosensory technology, and OpenGL 3D rendering, combined with the functional advantages of the somatosensory virtual fitting system, focusing on the improvement and role of AR technology in the clothing customization process, effectively improving user satisfaction with clothing customization and saves production time and costs.
