Abstract Narratology seems to offer an analytical tool capable of shedding light on the way in which al-Ḫaṭīb al-Baġdādī (d. 463/1071) chooses and arranges the vast reserve of ḫabars to compose the biographies that give life to his Taʾrīḫ Baġdād. Following Gerard Genette’s notion of narrative instance, we can observe that in the biographies collected by al-Ḫaṭīb always lies a creative tension that guides the author in the choice and juxtaposition of every single ḫabar relating to the biographee, capable of visualizing the peculiar space in which every character moves, and bringing out a singul

Through the case study approach, we argue that ekphrasis serves as a stylistic device in biographies and helps shape the reader’s perception of the subject. Published in different decades of the 20th century, the four biographies of the Duchess illustrate historical move of the biography from novelization towards factual narrative. Reviews of Joan of Arc books often rightly begin by asking whether there is the need for yet another book on Joan of Arc. In the case of biographies, one is tempted to answer, no. The known facts have not changed over 600 years, and new angles from which her life can be approached do not emerge as often as do new biographies. Oddly, however, the kind of detailed comparative study of Joan’s afterlife in England through four centuries, which Gail Orgelfinger has accomplished in this vigorous new book, still needs to be done for French chronicles (no less) and much of her French afterlife.

Abstract:
Abstract This study analyzes selected Persian ghazals attributed to Najm al-Dīn Masʿūd Sāvajī (d. ca. 1493), who, at the behest of Āq Quyūnlū Sultan Yaʿqūb b. Ūzūn Ḥasan (r. 1478–90), held paramount administrative positions in the White Sheep confederate empire. The analysis departs from existing scholarship on premodern Persian ghazal—the tendency of which is to regard the poetic form as nonreflective of its author and its times—and considers these ghazals as sources of historical information. The study thus determines the extent to which the selected lyrics of Najm al-Dīn affirm information

Micro-enterprises and self-employed individuals have been hit particularly hard by the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, but few studies have tackled the issue. This paper is based on four in-depth case studies of self-employed people from different sectors who have been greatly affected by measures taken to control the pandemic. By capturing shifts in the perception of institutional and economic pressures, as well as precarity after the outbreak of COVID-19, we gained profound insight into crisis management among entrepreneurs working in niche or marginalized fields of business.
