Abstract:
This study focuses on Punjabi immigrants in Bradford who immigrated in the 1960s to meet a labour shortage. While this group had initially been almost entirely men who had planned on earning money and then returning to Pakistan relatively wealthy, changes in laws in the 1970s compelled them to bring their entire families to Britain. Changes in the local economy, and younger generations putting down roots in Bradford has left this group impoverished and unable to return to Pakistan, but many have been unable or unwilling to acculturate to British society. The first phase involved a quantitative face-to-face questionnaire survey (n=16). The original strategy suggested that spectrum being employed by licensed cognitive users should be strictly avoided in order to ensure no interference to the licensed users. Abstract:
The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor (AhR) and the Aryl Hydrocarbon Nuclear Translocator (ARNT) play a role in mediating transcriptional responses to environmental pollutants, including the highly toxic compound 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo -p-dioxin (TCDD) but also endogenous physiological ligands. More recent studies have also indicated that the AhR plays a role in the immune system notably in effector Th17 cells where it seems to be critical for the production of the IL-22 cytokine. It is known that AhR ligands such as dioxins can suppress CD8 T cell mediated antiviral immune responses but it is not

It is becoming evident that protein conformation and function are sensitive to the local environment. Structural models are often reported, out of technical necessity, in environments only partially related to the native environment of the protein of interest. This is a major challenge for structural biology of membrane proteins, which are predicted to be highly sensitive to their local environment. The structural plasticity of membrane-active alpha helical peptides and proteins is explored in native-like model membranes in this thesis. On the one hand, alpha helical antimicrobial peptides (AM

'Terroir' is a concept that is used in France, and increasingly elsewhere, to evoke character and quality in food and drink in relation to the place it comes from. In this thesis, I investigate how terroir has attained its present-day economic value and cultural resonance; how it is subject to multiple forms of articulation across France; and how it is put to use as part of the philosophies and practices of environmentally sustainable modes of production. I use cultural and historical modes of enquiry and I draw upon interviews, participant observation, discourse and archive analysis carried o

Abstract:
This thesis aims to broaden the scope of magical realism by examining contemporary fiction in Asia and Australasia, regions which have been largely neglected in critical discussion of the narrative mode. My research seeks to modify and expand our collective conception of magical realism through key texts that challenge not only how we read the narrative mode, but also our expectations of it. My analysis involves a dual intervention in the fields of postcolonial studies and world literature. I supplement existing scholarship of magical realism with new paradigms of critical thought, such as epi

This thesis consists of three self-contained chapters which study different topics in the economics of information and education. The first chapter studies what families can infer about schools' relative quality from rankings, when schools' performance depends not only on their quality but also on their student intake. I develop a dynamic framework in which each cohort of families has access to the most recent ranking, but can neither observe application choices nor the allocation of past students. I study a steady-state Bayesian-Nash equilibrium, and find that a performance-based ranking is m

For H=0, the InP samples were nonmetallic. At low temperatures, the conductivity is due to nearest neighbour hopping (NNH) which is followed by variable range hopping (VRH) at lower T as described by the first, and second terms in the expression. Ceria is well known for its unique properties in fast oxygen mobility and formation of oxygen vacancies which makes ceria an excellent catalyst support for metal nanoparticles. Promotional effect of ceria has been well established in a number of reactions including three-way catalyst and CO oxidation. These unique properties of ceria are dependent on the surface facets it exposes, where they can be enhanced by the exposure of high energy surfaces such as (100) and (110). The work presented in this thesis involves controlling the surface exposed by the ceria support by making them into cube and

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the patterns of language alternation in the Polish community in Lithuania, which can be described as an indigenous ethnic group that has been living on the territory of modern-day Lithuania since the fourteenth century (Potašenko 2007). Following two language ideologies, Russification during Soviet times and Lithuanisation post-independence, the Lithuanian Poles developed complex linguistic repertoires, consisting of the regional and standard variety of Polish, Russian and Lithuanian. One of the most significant consequences of the prolonged language c
