Abstract:
The word "baal" means "husband", and the plural form is "baoola". The wife is likewise called "baal" or "baala". "Baal" is a Semitic noun for a Canaanite god or a god's son and husband to goddess "baala" or "Asheera" or "Ishtaroot". He was known as the god Hood who was a god of fields and cattle fertility. In sum, worshipping "baal" was common among the peoples of the East in the old time; that is why, we find he had different names. The reason was that each nation used a name that was known among its people. Any of his names would often start with "baal" and end with the name of that land or city. Alternatively, it would start with something attached to it, such as "baalfaghoor" or "Beelzebub". "Baal" had many priests who used to cheat people with their magic and sorcery which they relate to their god.

Abstract:
Due to it being a subject of a judicial copyright dispute, Frank Castorf’s staging of Brecht’s Baal raises the question about what needs to be protected: copyright or theatre practice. Castorf’s stagings are known for their text montages and various shifts in space and time, which is what he did again in his latest performance, where he combined Brecht’s Baal with Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, concentrating a number of female figures into one and moving the action to theVietnam War. After the premiere, Brecht’s heiress, Barbara Brecht-Schall, procured an injunctionprohibiting the piece. This was her last public act: she died a few months later.

Abstract:
Woody Allen has long been seen as a definitive voice in American Jewish humor because of his films, but his short fiction has been largely ignored. An analysis of his fiction can, however, yield strong indications that while Allen himself may be an atheist, his prose owes a great debt to his religious upbringing and his ongoing religious literacy. This essay take a closer look at one particular story to note the ways in which Allen encounters religion in his fiction and uses his knowledge of Jewish scriptural forms to enhance the reader's experience of his satire. In this story, consisting of his parodies of the Hassidic tales of Eastern Europe, is he the Baal Sham Tov; the Master of the Good Fake.

Abstract:
The rationale for the seminar was primarily that there are links between language testing and assessment on one hand and applied linguistics on the other which could be mutually beneficial, but are not necessarily perceived as such. Secondly, it was suggested that research in language assessment and applied linguistics have been perceived as distinct, with the roles of language testing and assessment in applied linguistics relatively unexplored, an artificial divide that Bachman & Cohen (1998), for example, argue should be bridged (see also Bachman & Palmer 1996; Shohamy 2001). An additional motivation for proposing this conference was to build on the growing presence of assessment and testing concerns within applied linguistics, not merely to address issues of visibility but, importantly, to contribute to a research agenda between different research communities within our (wider) applied linguistics community. To this end, we asked our keynote speakers and those who submitted abstracts to focus explicitly on reciprocity between the fields.

Pistorius, Hendrik Gerhardus. "Psalm 104 en die Godsdienstradisies van Aten en Baal." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/53069.

Full text
Abstract:
Psalm 104 paints a picture of Yahweh dressed in the royal robes of both Aten and Baal. The variety of references to Ancient Near Eastern gods points to a rich and complicated history of the origins of Psalm 104, Israel and Israelite theology. The origins of Psalm 104 in all likelyhood include oral traditions, cultic contexts and years of redactional rearrangement and rewriting. Akhenaten used a centralised cult and monolatrism to achieve political stability in Egypt. Years later Hammurabi used Marduk as chief deity in Babylonia to centralise power and create political and religious stability in his kingdom. It is within this Ancient Near Eastern tradition of using religion and one specific deity to achieve political stability that Psalm 104 finds its origins and cultic context. The early Israelite monarchy finds itself amidst uncertain political circumstances. The early kings used a centralised monarchy and monolatrism to achieve economic and political stability. The early Israelite government also used other Egyptian influences including governing methods, policies and the use of Egyptian scribes. The monarchy used cultic personal to communicate politically sanctioned theology and contact between cultic personal and Egyptian scribes intertwined with a Canaanite heritage has a cosmopolitan and culturally diverse Psalm 104 at its end. The psalm is used as a war liturgy, with Chaoskampf-motifs to legitimise the Israelite king s military action and kingship. This is done by ritual re-enactment on cultic level connecting Yahweh s mythic action to that of the king s present conflict.

Bujanda, Viloria Sharif Pablo Enrique. "Yahvé le baal d’Israël ? Figures vétérotestamentaires et extrabibliques de Dieu." Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SORUL048.

Full text
Abstract:
Putting the accent on the extrabiblical images of God, this research explores some often neglected aspects of the process which lead to the formation of a particular identity for the Only and all mighty God of the “abrahamic” monotheisms. For the Egyptians, all baalim were sethian manifestations. Seth, a very ancient god, became one of the sometimes forgotten Yahwe’s extrabiblical images. We have explored its different aspects following its evolution and ties with semitic populations, and in general with those of the Levantine coast. On the other chronological extreme of a very long historical period, during the reign of the last non-christian Roman Emperor, Julian the 2nd, we looked for another very complex extrabiblical image. It is is in fact, not one but many philosophical approaches to the ida of a superior divine entity. The second chapter studies God’s images inside the Hebrew Bible. These images are related and they complete the extrabiblica ones. In the biblical text we find strong tacs of an ancient local pantheon leaded by Yahweh/El and his paredra. We find in the biblical texts dynamics of assimilation, association, substitution, equivalence, fussion and rejection of divine attributs from this “family of gods” to the Only God

Doyle, Rebecca. "Faces of the gods : Baal, Asherah and Molek and studies of the Hebrew Scriptures." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1996. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/5979/.

Full text
Abstract:
The religion of ancient cultures has been captured in stone, clay, ink, gold and ivory. Huge wall reliefs down to tiny golden earrings or amulets have presented us with the faces of the gods. And which god is which, and what god did what, and who worshipped whom are questions that have fuelled the fires of many a scholar's imagination. As scholars have attempted the task of describing their chosen area, they have painted pictures for us. Unfortunately, in doing this they have often created portraits that are no more than pastiches. "The baal" of the Hebrew scriptures is described with the characteristics of Baal of Ugarit. "The molek" of II Kings and Jeremiah is accused of being a chthonic deity by virtue of association with gods of the underworld in Babylon, Mari and Ugarit. "Lady Asherah of the Sea" is cut down by the pens of those who equate her with the wooden thing burnt upon the altar by Gideon. This thesis presents isolated portraits of three deities, baal, asherah, and molek, from three different venues. The first chapter discusses "baal"; Baal at Ugarit, Baal from the iconographic/epigraphic material and thirdly, "the baal" from the Jeremiah- deuteronomistic texts. The second chapter presents "asherah" in similar fashion. The third chapter addresses the question "who is molek? " in three sections; firstly, MLK from the iconographic/epigraphic material, secondly, "molek" from the Hebrew scriptures and thirdly, a discussion of how the scholars engage with the evidence. The final chapter of this thesis compares and contrasts the different pictures that are presented by the different venues of each of these deities, drawing attention to the perils of mixing these venues in order to produce composite pictures. This thesis argues that methodologically it is sounder to be left with minimal portraits of the faces of these gods from the venues studied intra-textually, than to make vast assumptions about cultural diffusion and uniformity for which there is no evidence.

Clausen, Jay, Samuel Beal, Thomas Georgian, Kevin Gardner, Thomas Douglas, and Ashley Mossell. Effects of milling on the metals analysis of soil samples containing metallic residues. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41241.

Full text
Abstract:
Metallic residues are distributed heterogeneously onto small-arms range soils from projectile fragmentation upon impact with a target or berm backstop. Incremental Sampling Methodology (ISM) can address the spatially heterogeneous contamination of surface soils on small-arms ranges, but representative kilogram-sized ISM subsamples are affected by the range of metallic residue particle sizes in the sample. This study compares the precision and concentrations of metals in a small-arms range soil sample processed by a puck mill, ring and puck mill, ball mill, and mortar and pestle prior to analysis. The ball mill, puck mill, and puck and ring mill produced acceptable relative standard deviations of less than 15% for the anthropogenic metals of interest (Lead (Pb), Antimony (Sb), Copper (Cu), and Zinc (Zn)), with the ball mill exhibiting the greatest precision for Pb, Cu, and Zn. Precision by mortar and pestle, without milling, was considerably higher (40% to >100%) for anthropogenic metals. Media anthropogenic metal concentrations varied by more than 40% between milling methods, with the greatest concentrations produced by the puck mill, followed by the puck and ring mill and then the ball mill. Metal concentrations were also dependent on milling time, with concentrations stabilizing for the puck mill by 300 s but still increasing for the ball mill over 20 h. Differences in metal concentrations were not directly related to the surface area of the milled sample. Overall, the tested milling methods were successful in producing reproducible data for soils containing metallic residues. However, the effects of milling type and time on concentrations require consideration in environmental investigations.
