Abstract: For years, the human consciousness has challenged scientists from several areas of knowledge. In computer science, over the last decade, a significant growth in the number of studies about artificial consciousness has been observed. The architecture Baars-Franklin, developed by Stan Franklin, is a computational promising approach which is inspired by the Bernard Baars' global workspace theory. This work aims to discuss this technology and verify its advantages and disadvantages. Due to the intrinsic multidisciplinary characteristic of the study of artificial consciousness, first of all, the main general theories about consciousness are presented. After that, the most relevant studies about artificial consciousness are surveyed. Finally, the architecture Baars-Franklin is applied to control a virtual creature in an autonomous navigation problem. This dissertation brings some theoretical contributions, aggregating theories from other areas of knowledge, clarifying the architecture Baars-Franklin and showing a practical case study of the application of this model in order to build an autonomous agent.

This work has as its main goal a contrast of two renowned cognitive theories of consciousness, Bernard Baars’ (1988) Global Workspace Theory and Daniel Dennett’s (1991) Multiple Drafts. Although Dennett shows some appreciation to the Global Workspace Theory, his own Multiple Drafts Model does not seem very compatible with it. The specific goal of this work is to verify such compatibility by asking if the Global Workspace Theory suffers from Daniel Dennett´s criticism of the Cartesian Theater. The first chapter exposes Dennett´s perspective on the evolution of consciousness, in contrast to the view based on The Global Workspace Theory. The former understands that language and culture play a central role in the origin of consciousness; the latter understands consciousness has mainly a biological origin. In the second chapter, both theories of consciousness are exposed and reviewed. The third chapter focuses on a contrast of the two theories and some implications of the Cartesian Theater. Also, we noted that the concept of a Cartesian Theater is vague, and through a rigorous analysis, 10 requisites for a theory to evade the Cartesian Theater, following Dennett’s words, were identified. The Global Workspace Theory was shown to meet a few of these requisites. Finally, making use of Todd´s (2009) analyses, we concluded that Dennett´s main critics to some aspects of the Cartesian Theater are weak. So it follows that the criticism to the Cartesian Theater does not pose serious problems for the Global Workspace Theory

Abstract:
Ingeniero Civil Industrial

Abstract:
Bars, Chains, and Broken Things is a four-movement work for orchestra with a distinct social narrative: the American prison system. During my time working as a volunteer with the Pendleton Juvenile Correctional Facility, I came to know several young men and their stories. This piece serves as a loosely programmatic work chronicling the four most significant concepts which resonated with me. The individual movements are named and seek to musically represent these ideas: “Abandonment” - a common feeling among the incarcerated, “Imprisonment” - the effects and words of those feeling isolated, “Solace” - a state of calm acceptance, and “False Freedom” - a refutation of the belief that release from the prison system signifies the end of society’s punishment. It is my hope that this work serves as a musical contribution to awareness of the current issues faced in the American prison system.

Bhise, Vikrant Sudhakar. "Strength Degradation of Gfrp Bars." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35225.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary objective of this research was to examine the strength degradation of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bars at high temperature and alkalinity and determine if an Arrhenius type relationship can be used as a means of projecting life. The work done includes a thorough literature review, experiments and development of strength prediction models. The experimental work involves exposure of GFRP bars incased in cement mortar to lime-water solution at 30, 45 and 57°C. Overall 100 specimens were included in the experimental program. The tensile strength and modulus of elasticity retention after 180 days of exposure at 57°C was 57% and 82% respectively. The secondary objective was to determine the moisture absorption properties of GFRP bars. The moisture absorption data available is till 80 days from the immersion of the specimens in the tank. The collected data was used in the development of strength retention models. Two strength prediction models, Time Shift Method and Fickian Model for moisture absorption are formulated. Using the Fickian Model, strength is predicted for GFRP bars, if used in bridge decks in Roanoke, Virginia. The strength loss predicted was 45% after 50 years of exposure in real life environment. A linear relationship was observed when the moisture content and strength retention were plotted. The study estimates a strength loss higher than the ACI-440H recommended environmental degradation factor of 0.7 to calculate the design ultimate tensile strength.

Abstract:
Includes bibliographical references (p. 107-112).
The properties of soft, viscoelastic materials at high strain rates are important in furthering our understanding of their role during blast or impact events. Testing these soft or low impedance materials using metallic bars in a split Hopkinson pressure bar setup, poor signal to noise ratios and impedance mismatching occur. One solution is to use polymeric Hopkinson bars. In this dissertation, Polycarbonate, Polymethyl Methacrylate and Nylon are considered for use as Hopkinson bars. Conventional Hopkinson bar analysis cannot be used on the polymeric bars due to the viscoelastic nature of the bar material. As stress waves propagate along the length of the bars, viscoelastic effects result in dispersion and attenuation. The main topic of this dissertation is to account for this viscoelastic material effect.

Qazaz, Cazhaow S. "Bayesian error bars for regression." Thesis, Aston University, 1996. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/10599/.

Full text
Abstract:
Regression problems are concerned with predicting the values of one or more continuous quantities, given the values of a number of input variables. For virtually every application of regression, however, it is also important to have an indication of the uncertainty in the predictions. Such uncertainties are expressed in terms of the error bars, which specify the standard deviation of the distribution of predictions about the mean. Accurate estimate of error bars is of practical importance especially when safety and reliability is an issue. The Bayesian view of regression leads naturally to two contributions to the error bars. The first arises from the intrinsic noise on the target data, while the second comes from the uncertainty in the values of the model parameters which manifests itself in the finite width of the posterior distribution over the space of these parameters. The Hessian matrix which involves the second derivatives of the error function with respect to the weights is needed for implementing the Bayesian formalism in general and estimating the error bars in particular. A study of different methods for evaluating this matrix is given with special emphasis on the outer product approximation method. The contribution of the uncertainty in model parameters to the error bars is a finite data size effect, which becomes negligible as the number of data points in the training set increases. A study of this contribution is given in relation to the distribution of data in input space. It is shown that the addition of data points to the training set can only reduce the local magnitude of the error bars or leave it unchanged. Using the asymptotic limit of an infinite data set, it is shown that the error bars have an approximate relation to the density of data in input space.

Schuiling, Floris Jan. "Animate structures : the compositions and improvisations of the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2015. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/273767.

Full text
Abstract:
Founded in 1967, the Amsterdam-based improvising collective the Instant Composers Pool is one of the longest consistently performing groups in improvised music. This thesis forms an ethnography and musicological study of the ICP Orchestra, which originated when the "pool" developed a more coherent line-up around 1980. With a background in experimental music as well as free jazz, their performance practice differs in many respects from the practices of American forms of jazz. Whereas most accounts of improvisation emphasise orality and creative interaction in opposition to the performance of composed music, 'instant composition' defines improvisation precisely in terms of compositional thinking. Moreover, founding member and orchestra leader Misha Mengelberg composed a very diverse repertoire for the group which draws on styles from Duke Ellington to John Cage and uses various forms of compositional and notational techniques to explore the different improvisatory possibilities that they afford, thus blurring the distinction between improvisation and composition both in name and in practice. Apart from a detailed historical and ethnographic description of a group that is central to a genre that has been underrepresented in music-historical research, this thesis investigates the repertoire of the ICP and its use as an opportunity to reconsider the relation between musical text and performance. Drawing on my observations and interviews with the musicians, and connecting these to theories of material culture and science and technology studies, it develops a concept of compositions as animated and animating objects in performance, tools and materials that participate in the creative interactive process of improvised performance rather than textual representations of 'the music itself'. I substantiate this theory with detailed descriptions of ICP performances recorded during fieldwork. This contributes to a rethinking of musical notation and simultaneously brings new insights into improvisation as a creative practice.

Full text
Abstract:
Eight full-scale columns were constructed and tested under monotonic axial compression loading to investigate the influence of headed bars on the confinement of the concrete. One column represented a column with no transverse reinforcement and another column had poor detailing and little confinement. A third column contained seismic hoops and crossties, which represented current detailing practice for significant confinement. A fourth column test investigated the response with the seismic crossties replaced by headed bars. Finally, two column specimens were constructed and tested with all of the transverse reinforcement provided by headed bars. These six specimens enabled an assessment of the effectiveness of headed bars in confining the concrete. It was found that the use of headed bars improved the confinement of the columns.
Two additional specimens were constructed without any transverse reinforcement. These columns were later retrofitted, by drilling horizontal holes in the columns, adding special headed bars (one head fixed and one head threaded) and then filling the drilled holes with epoxy. These retrofitted specimens had two different spacings for the added headed bars. The improvement of the response with these added headed bars provided insight into the rehabilitation of older structures containing poorly detailed columns. All of the test specimens were instrumented to determine strain localization during failure and to monitor the strains in the longitudinal and transverse reinforcement.

Abstract:
In the Local Group of galaxies we can distinguish two categories of dwarf galaxies. The dIrr galaxies exhibit certain degree of discy rotation, whereas the dSph galaxies have spheroidal shapes. In the tidal stirring scenario initially disky dwarf galaxies are transformed into spheroids due to repeated interactions with the host galaxy. An intermediate stage of this process involves the formation of a tidally induced bar in the stellar disc of the dwarf. First, we study the orbital structure in an $N$-body simulation. We determined orbital frequencies and shapes of stars. Majority of the orbits (more than $80\%$) have boxy shapes, while only about $8\%$ belong to the classical family x$_1$. Then, we study impact of two parameters: the size of the orbit of the dwarf and the inclination of its disc. The most pronounced bar was created on the intermediate-sized orbit while increasing the inclination leads to weaker bars. During further pericenter passages the bars were weakened and shortened. Finally, we study the impact of the interstellar medium varying gas fraction. In all cases bars of similar length formed in the stellar component of the dwarfs. However, the gaseous component remained approximately axisymmetric. In the models with a lower gas fraction the bars were more pronounced and survived until the end of the simulations, while in the dwarfs with a higher gas fraction the bars were destroyed after the second or third pericenter passages

Caliskan, Kemal. "Automated Design Analysis Of Anti-roll Bars." Master's thesis, METU, 2003. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/4/1126309/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Vehicle anti-roll bars are suspension components used for limiting body roll angle. They have a direct effect on the handling characteristics of the vehicle. Design changes of anti-roll bars are quite common at various steps of vehicle production, and a design analysis must be performed for each change. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) can be effectively used in design analysis of anti-roll bars. However, due to high number of repeated design analyses, the analysis time and cost problems associated with the use of general FEA package programs may create considerable disadvantages in using these package programs for performing anti-roll bar design analysis. In this study, an automated design program is developed for performing design analysis of vehicle anti-roll bars. The program is composed of two parts, the user interface and the FEA macro. The FEA macro includes the codes for performing deformation, stress, fatigue, and modal analysis of anti-roll bars in ANSYS 7.0. The user interface, which is composed in Visual Basic 6.0, includes the forms for data input and result output procedures. By the developed software, the FEA of the anti-roll bars is simplified to simple data entry via user interface. The flow of the analysis is controlled by the program and the finite element analysis is performed by ANSYS at the background. The developed software can perform design analysis for a wide range of anti-roll bars: The bar centerline can have any 3D shape, the cross section can be solid or hollow circular, the end connections can be of pin or spherical joint type, the bushings can be mounted at any position on the bar with a user defined bushing length. The effects of anti-roll bar design parameters on final anti-roll bar properties are also evaluated by performing sample analyses with the automated design program developed in this study.

Abstract:

Pagliuso, Alessandro. "Molecular mechanism of BARS-dependent fission process." Thesis, Open University, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.594182.

Full text
Abstract:
Membrane fission is the cellular process by which organelles divide or release vesicles, and it is integral to cell functions such as membrane trafficking, organelle partitioning during mitosis, and mitochondrial dynamics. Membrane fission appears to rely on multiple mechanisms. Many fission events (typically, clathrin-dependent endocytosis) are driven by the large GTPase dynamin; others, instead, require C-terminal-binding-protein l -short form/brefeldin A (BFA) ADP-ribosylated substrate (CtBP1 -S/BARS; henceforth referred as BARS). Indeed, BARS can dramatically enhance the fission of Golgi-derived membranous tubules in vitro and also regulate several trafficking steps in vivo. These include the fission of basolaterally directed post-Golgi carriers and COPI vesicles, growth-factor-stimulated macropinocytosis, and fission of the Golgi ribbon during mitosis. The fission-inducing property of BARS was proposed to be dependent on an intrinsic lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase (LP AA 1) activity responsible for phosphatidic acid production. Along with the closely metabolically interrelated lipids lysophosphatidic acid and diacylglycerol, phosphatidic acid has been suggested to mediate the rapid lipid geometry changes that might induce fission. Later work, however, showed that this activity is not intrinsic to BARS, but is due to an unknown associated protein involved in phosphatidic acid metabolism. Following from these combined considerations, the aim of the present study was to determine whether the fission-inducing property of BARS involves an interaction with a phosphatidic-acidproducing enzyme. BARS is shown to associate with two Golgi-localised LPAAT enzymes, LPAAT3 and LPAAT4. These LPAATs are involved in membrane trafficking, and treatments that block their catalytic activity result in impairment of membrane trafficking.

Abstract:

This creative dissertation consists of a novella, The Riot. alongside a contextualizing essay. Ultimately, this project is about social justice for a population that is forced together, those who contain and the ones contained. The former group are the gatekeepers of the barrier that runs between two parallel worlds. less concrete than mortar and concertina wire, more dangerous and more permeable. It is the thinnest, most tenuous part of our buffered-up society, and one that can be rendered, ripped, or compromised in a moment..

Inside Job collates different perspectives into one novella, which acts as a frame story for the lived experience that is human containment, including the unique commonality between both parties, that of being judged by a larger society. Prison is a secret place; truth is often hidden. Steel bars are my view finder in weaving together the voices of those who are isolated as they serve either time or the system, along with the writings of prison scholars and creative fiction and nonfiction writers. Key to my contextualzing essay has been the work of Michel Foucault, Linda Alcoff, creative nonfiction pioneer Lee Gutkind, and prison writers who stand on both sides of the bars, including Ted Conover, George Jackson, and Caleb Smith.

Swan, Jason David. "Durville casting of nickel-iron valve bars." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2016. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6904/.

Full text
Abstract:
The manufacture of an air-melted, Durville cast, nickel-iron based superalloy, XD1102, for the automotive industry has been studied. In particular the formation of the air-gap and the heat transfer between the casting and the mould interface has been measured for an aluminum alloy, LM25 and the XD1102 alloy cast into the same size mould. The experimental results were used to verify ProCAST 3D model simulations providing confidence that the software could be used for practical applications where destructive measuring techniques is not viable. A second aspect of this thesis was to identify, trace the origin of, illustrate the root cause analysis, and the mitigation of a feature which has been observed on numerous valve heads. Lastly the investigation into whether the substantial thermo-mechanical work received by an ingot after casting minimised the benefits of a carefully poured cast via the Durville method has been discussed.

(cont.) Experiments were performed in a large wave flume to validate the theory and to study additional aspects of sand bar evolution. The wave envelope and bar profile were recorded for low and high beach reflection, monochromatic and polychromatic waves, and several sediment grain sizes. In particular, sediment sorting was demonstrated under standing waves when the seabed consisted of initially well mixed sand of two grain sizes.
A quantitative theory is described for the evolution of sand bars under monochromatic surface water waves. By assuming the slopes of the waves and seabed are comparably gentle, an approximate evolution equation is found for the seabed elevation. The boundary layer structure is calculated by assuming a depth-linear or depth-independent time-invariant eddy viscosity. An empirical formula by Sleath (1978) is used to predict the bedload transport. A convective diffusion equation governs the suspended sediment transport (which includes the effects of wave-advection), and empirical formulae by Lee et al. (2004) and Wikramanayake & Madsen (1994) specify the time-varying concentration at the seabed. Effects of mean beach slope and narrow banded waves are also considered. The sand bar elevation is found to evolve according to a forced-diffusion equation, where the diffusivity is the gravitational effect on bedload transport on a slope and the forcing is due to both bedload and suspended load transport mechanisms. The time scale of sand bar evolution is over four orders of magnitude longer than the wave period: days in the lab and weeks in the field. In addition to the effects of bedload considered before by Yu & Mei (2000), it is found that suspended load provides a new forcing mechanism affecting sand bar geometry when the seabed is composed of fine sediments. When wave reflection is significant, bars and waves interact through the Bragg scattering mechanism. Under strong reflection, large regions exist where there is no change to the seabed. For weaker reflection, an inviscid return flow is present that places an additional stress on the bed. As shown by Yu & Mei (2000), any finite beach reflection is sufficient to generate and maintain sand bars.

Achillides, Zenon. "Bond behaviour of FRP bars in concrete." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1998. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14698/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the bond behaviour of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) reinforcing bars in concrete elements both analytically and experimentally. Two series of experiments were conducted. In the first series, more than 100 cube specimens were tested in direct pullout. The mode of bond failure of FRP bars in the pullout tests was found in most cases to differ substantially from that of deformed steel bars. Within this series the parameters that influence bond development were examined. The bond strengths developed by CFRP and GFRP bars appear to be very similar, and just below what is expected from deformed steel bars. In the second series of experiments, nine beams were tested in four-point bending to examine the bond splitting behaviour of FRP single anchorages and splices. CFRP bars develop higher bond splitting strength than respective GFRP bars, which contradicts the findings of pullout tests. The lower elastic modulus of GFRP bars is thought to play an important role to their lower bond splitting strength. For this reason, the suitability of the cube tests for measuring the bond strength ofFRP bars for practical purposes is questioned. Spliced bars appear to develop similar bond splitting strength to single bar anchorages. The distribution of bond stresses along the anchorage length and the effect of flexural cracks on the bond development were also examined. The thesis also discuss other parameters that influence bond splitting such as transverse reinforcement, concrete cover, and support action. An analytical study was conducted to enhance further the understanding of the bond behaviour of FRP bars. Both the pullout and beam tests were modelled by using FE packages. Non-linear springs describing the bond behaviour of short embedment lengths were chosen and used for predicting the behaviour of longer embedments. The influence of flexural cracking was also considered in the case of beams. The analytical results showed a good correlation with the respective experimental. Finally, some important issues regarding the design of anchorage lengths for FRP reinforcing bars were addressed and a method of working towards the formulation of design recommendations is suggested.

Abstract:
For many years, shotcrete (sprayed concrete) has been used for slope stabilization and the reinforcement of degraded structures. Nowadays, it's also used to build full-depth structural reinforced concrete elements such as shear walls, columns, thin shells, tunnel linings and girders. However, concerns regarding the encapsulation quality of the reinforcing bars have been raised by structural engineers. Indeed, imperfections could be created specifically behind the reinforcing bars if concrete is inappropriately sprayed which could cause the premature failure of structural elements. Essentially, very little research has been completed on the subject and the current guidelines rely completely on empirical evidence which serves only to evaluate the encasement quality of reinforcing bars from cores taken from pre-construction panels. This study aims to increase the scientific understanding regarding the bond stress reduction between reinforcing bars and concrete caused by the presence of such imperfections in order to include this phenomenon in the current inspection and design guidelines for shotcrete structures. To counteract the bond stress loss, if any, modification factors to be used in conjunction with the development length equation of reinforcing bars in tension is proposed. To do so, the study includes an experimental, a modeling and lastly an analytical phase. The experimental phase includes sprayed as well as cast in-place with artificial voids (to recreate the imperfections observed when shotcrete is incorrectly applied) “pull-out” specimens. Cast in-place “beam-end” specimens with artificial voids were also studied. The modeling phase only includes “beam-end” specimens and the main studied results were the ultimate load and the mode of failure of the specimens which were found to be mainly influenced by the transversal length of the voids (or un-bonded perimeters) and the concrete cover. The results allowed to establish un-bonded perimeters limits beyond which a possible reinforcing bar pull-out failure could occur. However, since a certain bar stress loss was still observed even below the limits established, the analytical phase served to propose modification factors to be used in conjunction with the development length equation. Thus, important guidelines have been created for structural engineers allowing them make decisions regarding the integrity of shotcrete structures during the inspection phase or to take into account shotcrete during the design phase of structures if imperfections are observed or are susceptible to be created behind the reinforcing bars.
