Abstract:
The bric à brac (bab) locus acts as a homeotic and morphogenetic regulator in the development of ovaries, appendages and the abdomen. It consists of two structurally and functionally related genes, bab1 and bab2, each of which encodes a single nuclear protein. Bab1 and Bab2 have two conserved domains in common, a BTB/POZ domain and a Psq domain, a motif that characterizes a subfamily of BTB/POZ domain proteins in Drosophila. The tissue distribution of Bab1 and Bab2 overlaps, with Bab1 being expressed in a subpattern of Bab2. Analysis of a series of mutations indicates that the two bab genes have synergistic, distinct and redundant functions during imaginal development. Interestingly, several reproduction-related traits that are sexually dimorphic or show diversity among Drosophila species are highly sensitive to changes in the bab gene dose, suggesting that alterations in bab activity may contribute to evolutionary modification of sex-related morphology.

Abstract:
Gene duplications and transcriptional enhancer emergence/modifications are thought having greatly contributed to phenotypic innovations during animal evolution. Nevertheless, little is known about how enhancers evolve after gene duplication and how regulatory information is rewired between duplicated genes. The Drosophila melanogaster bric-a-brac (bab) complex, comprising the tandem paralogous genes bab1 and bab2, provides a paradigm to address these issues. We previously characterized an intergenic enhancer (named LAE) regulating bab2 expression in the developing legs. We show here that bab2 regulators binding directly the LAE also govern bab1 expression in tarsal cells. LAE excision by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing reveals that this enhancer appears involved but not strictly required for bab1 and bab2 co-expression in leg tissues. Instead, the LAE enhancer is critical for paralog-specific bab2 expression along the proximo-distal leg axis. Chromatin features and phenotypic rescue experiments indicate that LAE functions partly redundantly with leg-specific regulatory information overlapping the bab1 transcription unit. Phylogenomics analyses indicate that (i) the bab complex originates from duplication of an ancestral singleton gene early on within the Cyclorrhapha dipteran sublineage, and (ii) LAE sequences have been evolutionarily-fixed early on within the Brachycera suborder thus predating the gene duplication event. This work provides new insights on enhancers, particularly about their emergence, maintenance and functional diversification during evolution.

Abstract:
Rhizobial nitrogen-fixing bacteria are the main inhabitants of the root nodules of legume plants. Studying the bacterial community of legume nodules is important in understanding plant growth and nutrient requirements. Culture-based technique was used to examine the bacterial community of these underground organs from Vigna subterranea L. Verdc (Bambara nut), an underutilized legume in Africa, for plant growth-promoting traits. In this study, Bambara nuts were planted to trap root-nodule bacteria, and the bacteria were morphologically, biochemically, and molecularly characterized. Five selected isolates were screened in vitro for their plant growth-promoting traits and exhibited differences in their phenotypic traits. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products were subjected to partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing for phylogenetic analysis. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence, the isolates were identified as BA1 (Stenotrophomonas maltophilia), BA2 (Chryseobacterium sp.), BA3 (Pseudomonas alcaligenes), BA4 (Pseudomonas plecoglossicida), and BA5 (Pseudomonas hibiscicola). Results showed that four of the five isolates could produce IAA. The capability to solubilize phosphate in Pikovskaya’s agar plates was positively shown by four isolates (BA2, BA3, BA4, and BA5). Three isolates could produce hydrogen cyanide while isolates BA1, BA3, BA4, and BA5 were found to have ammonia-production traits. The results suggest that these plant growth-promoting isolates can be used as inoculants for plant growth and productivity.

Abstract:
The reaction synthesis of barium boride (BaB6) nanoparticles under low temperature was investigated in this study. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to investigate the phase and the structure of BaB 6. The characterization for microstructure was performed by Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) with EDS, TEM, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Raman scattering spectroscopy. It is concluded that BaB 6 nanoparticles can be successfully prepared under low temperature at 500°C. XRD pattern shows that the nanoparticles are consisted of predominantly (110)-oriented BaB 6 phase. The powders are polygonal-like shape with the average size of 200 nanometers. TEM identified that each nanoparticle shows perfect single crystal and cubic structure. The boron-to-barium atomic ratio of 5.24:1 was determined, less than the stoichiometric ratio of 6:1. BaB 6 nanoparticles can absorb infrared spectrum at 459, 690, 993, 1329, 1619, 2449 and 3423cm-1 in the test range of 400~4000cm-1, respectively. Three peaks at 677.1, 823.5 and 1116.4cm-1 can be observed clearly from the Raman spectra of BaB 6 nanoparticles at room temperature. The results showed that the electron dispersion of B 6 octahedron in BaB 6 is two-dimensional pancake-type without lattice distortion, which may account for the unique physical properties of BaB 6 nanoparticles.

Abstract:
Many studies have focused on the mechanisms of stem cell maintenance via their interaction with a particular niche or microenvironment in adult tissues, but how formation of a functional niche is initiated, including how stem cells within a niche are established, is less well understood. Adult Drosophila melanogaster ovary Germline Stem Cell (GSC) niches are comprised of somatic cells forming a stack called a Terminal Filament (TF) and associated Cap and Escort Cells (CCs and ECs, respectively), which are in direct contact with GSCs. In the adult ovary, the transcription factor Engrailed is specifically expressed in niche cells where it directly controls expression of the decapentaplegic (dpp) gene encoding a member of the Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) family of secreted signaling molecules, which are key factors for GSC maintenance. In larval ovaries, in response to BMP signaling from newly formed niches, adjacent primordial germ cells become GSCs. The bric-à-brac paralogs (bab1 and bab2) encode BTB/POZ domain-containing transcription factors that are expressed in developing niches of larval ovaries. We show here that their functions are necessary specifically within precursor cells for TF formation during these stages. We also identify a new function for Bab1 and Bab2 within developing niches for GSC establishment in the larval ovary and for robust GSC maintenance in the adult. Moreover, we show that the presence of Bab proteins in niche cells is necessary for activation of transgenes reporting dpp expression as of larval stages in otherwise correctly specified Cap Cells, independently of Engrailed and its paralog Invected (En/Inv). Moreover, strong reduction of engrailed/invected expression during larval stages does not impair TF formation and only partially reduces GSC numbers. In the adult ovary, Bab proteins are also required for dpp reporter expression in CCs. Finally, when bab2 was overexpressed at this stage in somatic cells outside of the niche, there were no detectable levels of ectopic En/Inv, but ectopic expression of a dpp transgene was found in these cells and BMP signaling activation was induced in adjacent germ cells, which produced GSC-like tumors. Together, these results indicate that Bab transcription factors are positive regulators of BMP signaling in niche cells for establishment and homeostasis of GSCs in the Drosophila ovary.

Abstract:
The prevalence and severity of skin cancer, specifically malignant melanoma, among Caucasians remains a significant concern. Natural compounds from plants have long been explored as potential anticancer agents. Betulinic acid (BI) has shown promise in its therapeutic properties, including its anticancer effects. However, its limited bioavailability has hindered its medicinal applications. To address this issue, two recently synthesized semisynthetic derivatives, N-(2,3-indolo-betulinoyl)diglycylglycine (BA1) and N-(2,3-indolo-betulinoyl)glycylglycine (BA2), were compared with previously reported compounds N-(2,3-indolo-betulinoyl)glycine (BA3), 2,3-indolo-betulinic acid (BA4), and BI. These compounds were evaluated for their effects on murine melanoma cells (B164A5) using various in vitro assays. The introduction of an indole framework at the C2 position of BI resulted in an increased cytotoxicity. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of compound BA4 was enhanced by conjugating its carboxylic group with an amino acid residue. BA2 and BA3, with glycine and glycylglycine residues at C28, exhibited approximately 2.20-fold higher inhibitory activity compared to BA4. The safety assessment of the compounds on human keratinocytes (HaCaT) has revealed that concentrations up to 10 µM slightly reduced cell viability, while concentrations of 75 µM resulted in lower cell viability rates. LDH leakage assays confirmed cell membrane damage in B164A5 cells when exposed to the tested compounds. BA2 and BA3 exhibited the highest LDH release, indicating their strong cytotoxicity. The NR assay revealed dose-dependent lysosome disruption for BI and 2,3-indolo-betulinic acid derivatives, with BA1, BA2, and BA3 showing the most cytotoxic effects. Scratch assays demonstrated concentration-dependent inhibition of cell migration, with BA2 and BA3 being the most effective. Hoechst 3342 staining revealed that BA2 induced apoptosis, while BA3 induced necrosis at lower concentrations, confirming their anti-melanoma properties. In conclusion, the semisynthetic derivatives of BI, particularly BA2 and BA3, show promise as potential candidates for further research in developing effective anti-cancer therapies.

Abstract:
The Babi religion had, during its brief life, a tremendous impact on Iranian society. Its founder, Sayyid $ sp{ rm c}$Ali Muhammad, the Bab (1819-1850) wrote a great many works of several kinds. Of his major writings, the two earliest are partial commentaries on the Qur'an. The following study examines these two remarkably different commentaries in an attempt to appreciate the Bab's attitudes towards the Qur'an, Islam, and himself. The earliest work, the Tafsi r surat al-baqara, was written before the Bab had publicized a claim to messiahship. In the Tafsi r surat Yusuf, written only a short time later, this claim is made explicit. The radical difference in the style of the two commentaries, which may be seen as a reflection of a development in the Bab's perception of himself, is analyzed.

Biais, Pauline. "Synthèse de copolymères amphiphiles triblocs BAB par PISA-RAFT dans l'eau." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020SORUS256.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the past decade, the polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has become an efficient tool for the preparation of block-copolymer nanoparticles at high solid contents, in both organic solvents and water. Nonetheless, most of the studied systems are currently based on simple AB diblock copolymers (where A = solvophilic, stabilizer block and B = solvophobic block). Another interesting class of block copolymers are associative BAB triblocks. To the best of our knowledge, very few studies report their synthesis by PISA and the polymerizations are performed in mixtures of alcohol and water. In this work, for the first time, a straightforward strategy to synthesize, in pure water, BAB triblock copolymers through the use of reversible deactivation radical polymerization is developed and studied in details. To this end, an hydrophilic, bifunctional macroRAFT agent of poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) with a central benzoic acid group was used in the aqueous dispersion polymerization of diacetone acrylamide. Various morphologies (spheres, fibers and vesicles) could be obtained with good polymerization controls. Moreover, we showed that the particle morphology and colloidal stability strongly depend on the degree of ionization of the central charge in the stabilizer loop. Then, the mechanism of formation of these triblock copolymers during PISA was investigated. Finally, we showed the possibility to form dynamic networks of BAB copolymers – using a one-pot process entirely in water – leading to the formation of thermoresponsive copolymer networks with tunable viscosity

Abstract:
In this work new fluorinated and non-fluorinated mono- and bifunctional trithiocarbonates of the structure Z-C(=S)-S-R and Z-C(=S)-S-R-S-C(=S)-Z were synthesized for the use as chain transfer agents (CTAs) in the RAFT-process. All newly synthesized CTAs were tested for their efficiency to moderate the free radical polymerization process by polymerizing styrene (M3). Besides characterization of the homopolymers by GPC measurements, end- group analysis of the synthesized block copolymers via 1H-, 19F-NMR, and in some cases also UV-vis spectroscopy, were performed attaching suitable fluorinated moieties to the Z- and/or R-groups of the CTAs. Symmetric triblock copolymers of type BAB and non-symmetric fluorine end- capped polymers were accessible using the RAFT process in just two or one polymerization step. In particular, the RAFT-process enabled the controlled polymerization of hydrophilic monomers such as N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) (M1) as well as N-acryloylpyrrolidine (NAP) (M2) for the A-blocks and of the hydrophobic monomers styrene (M3), 2-fluorostyrene (M4), 3-fluorostyrene (M5), 4-fluorostyrene (M6) and 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene (M7) for the B-blocks. The properties of the BAB-triblock copolymers were investigated in dilute, concentrated and highly concentrated aqueous solutions using DLS, turbidimetry, 1H- and 19F-NMR, rheology, determination of the CMC, foam height- and surface tension measurements and microscopy. Furthermore, their ability to stabilize emulsions and microemulsions and the wetting behaviour of their aqueous solutions on different substrates was investigated. The behaviour of the fluorine end-functionalized polymers to form micelles was studied applying DLS measurements in diluted organic solution. All investigated BAB-triblock copolymers were able to form micelles and show surface activity at room temperature in dilute aqueous solution. The aqueous solutions displayed moderate foam formation. With different types and concentrations of oils, the formation of emulsions could be detected using a light microscope. A boosting effect in microemulsions could not be found adding BAB-triblock copolymers. At elevated polymer concentrations, the formation of hydrogels was proved applying rheology measurements.

Abstract:
This PhD research investigates the role of television in representing the past and constructing an idealized society using a case study of a phenomenal Ramadan drama series, Bab el-Hara. The television drama, a Syrian production, was funded by the pan-Arab satellite conglomerate, the MBC group, and it is set in a fictitious Damascus of the 1930s under the French Mandate. The series, airing its seventh season in Ramadan, 2015, succeeded in achieving pan-Arab fame and gave a boost to the “Damascene Milieu” drama genre. The study approaches this television phenomenon ethnographically, looking at the fiction's implicatedness in the everyday life of viewers and makers in Damascus and in Beirut, through a multi-sited approach investigating content, context and agency, engaging in questions on space, morality and patriotism. The objective is to investigate audiences, text and makers as distinct yet connected sites of meaning. This context based analysis of Bab al-Hara takes place against the backdrop of 2010/2011; the liminal state of a Levant entering deeper into a complex local, regional and international power struggle. The everyday life of Bab al-Hara’s viewers was characterized by a general sense of loss and mistrust, and an unclear and threatened future. Contrastingly, Bab al-Hara provided the nostalgic promise of ontological security, grounded as it was in the courtyard houses of Old Damascus. The Damascene courtyard house constituted the spatial anchor for an idealized moral past, an ahistorical Damascusfocused Arab cultural history, and an imagination of the domestic as sovereign. It thus promoted a view of the neighbourly, the city and the country as a system based on kin, or the family, as the frame in which to understand the collectivity. Bab al-Hara's cultural, moral and spatial telos, a fusion of religious and nationalist worldviews, amongst others, is negotiated by Bab al-Hara’s viewers. The older generation, with situated experience of the social relations during the 1930s, and the younger generation that is appreciative of the virility of the “real” Bab al-Hara man that they no longer encounter in their everyday life. The multiple generational readings in regard to the absent idealized strength and authority, became a dominant reading in relation to chastity and unity as two idealized values that are necessary to conserve, but that are facing serious challenges in the everyday. Bab al-Hara idealizes a moral domestic society that is set in the past and it aims to advance a discourse on unity and patriotism. In so doing, however, it only exposes the weakness of the national project. The Syrian social upheaval in 2011 shows how unity and patriotism as the binaries to sectarianism and treason, have not succeeded in protecting the inner domain of the house from external invasions or internal divisions. In fact, accusations of treason, instead of forcing the outsider to the outside and building solidarity within, accentuates mistrust between the insiders and reveals the power and the limits of t h e Bab al-Hara imaginary of a kin based collectivity, and the omnipresence of imperialism.

This study focuses on teacher s training in early childhood education, whose search problem lies in knowing the role of initial training in the reconstruction process of these professional identities, investigating the function of this training in the reconstruction of social representations of children education s future teachers about their profession. We developed a study based on qualitative research approach, whose theoretical and methodological framework was based on the Theory of Social Representations of Moscovici (2009). The data collection technique adopted was the application of questionnaires to 57 new students and 46 graduates of Pedagogy course of a private university in S?o Paulo state, among which we selected five graduating students to participate in semistructured interviews. The collected data were analyzed based on the identification of the following categories: teacher identity, conception of teacher and teacher training s challenges. The results indicated that this training course seems to have provided recognition to the early childhood s teacher as a professional one, with specific knowledge for its actions and, therefore, who needs to be professionally and socially recognized by the importance of its function. The investigation underscored how important is to rethink childhood s teacher identity in terms of professional recognition and its social, political and professional role. We value the contributions of this training course to the review of concepts and representations that interfere with this identity reconstruction and we realize that challenges are made to improve initial training in this course, such as internship, which needs to articulate the theory and promote more critical thoughts about the foundational concepts of the area; the need for deeper analysis of the curriculum to enable review of conceptions, allowing redraftings that deconstruct socially crystallized representations. Finally, by placing emphasis on these issues, we believe we are contributing to Educational research and, more specifically, to the identity formation of Childhood s Teachers, who belongs to a professional group entitled to exercise its teacher profession and the social function that historically characterizes it.

Abstract:
The studied zone is located on the calcareous-front-dorsal at east of the village bab-taza. The zone is cutted by the calcareous, sandstones and marls formation. This zone has serious problems due to earth movement. Which come from release factor and site-orogenic raising, rain, human density, geology (mineralogy, granulometric, structurs, and so on) morphology (slope, horizontal concavity)-, are differents according to the area, they are only translational or rotational at mountain scale, but in the basins and in the partitions rotational movements and also mudflow take place

Abstract:
A proper spatio-temporal expression of bric-a-brab2 is required for the proximo-distal (PD) patterning of the Drosophila leg and antenna. Here, we deciphered the molecular mechanisms controlling bab2 expression in developing distal leg (4 rings) and antennal (2 rings) tissues. Using site-targeted GFP reporter assay and BAC recombineering, we show that restricted bab2 expression relies on a single 0. 56 kb cis-regulatory module (CRM), which is necessary and sufficient to drive normal Bab2 function in both developing leg and antenna. Through deletion and site-directed mutagenesis approaches, we identified discrete DNA motifs acting either positively or negatively. Finally, loss- and gain-of-function genetic analyses in combination with in-vitro electrophoretic mobility shift assays established that the Distal-less homeodomain protein directly activates bab2 in all rings, whereas the Rotund C2H2 zinc-finger protein is specifically required for direct activation in the most proximal rings. This work paves the way to decipher at the molecular level how to make concentric rings from an epithelial layer in order to organize the PD limb patterning

Abstract:
Breakdown of the blood-aqueous barrier (BAB) resulting in protein and cells in the aqueous humor of humans and many animals has been documented.1 This breakdown occurs during uveitis, and following surgery and paracentesis. BAB breakdown occurs following these initiating insults because endothelial cells contract in the ciliary body, causing protein leakage from the vascular system which results Jn dysjunction of the epithelial layers, further vascular damage and protein leakage.2,3 These changes are mediated by prostaglandins, leukotrienes, free radicals, neurostimulators (such as in the anti-dromic reflex) and mechanical disruption.3,4,5,6 Sequelae to the BAB breakdown can be severe and include hypopyon, cataract, synechia, vitreal opacities, glaucoma, blindness and occasionally phthisis bulbi.

Abstract:
The Horn of Africa is one of the most important regions in the world, and the multitude of military bases in the region seems to support this fact. It is no wonder that the Bab-el-Mandeb is an important strait in international trade, serving as the true end of the Suez Canal. China’s first overseas military base in Djibouti, a small country already oversaturated with the military bases of various countries, could therefore show the increasing assertiveness of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and its ambition in establishing itself as a global superpower. This analysis provides a brief overview of this naval base and explores what functions it has, how it compares to its neighbouring military bases, and what potential there is to it.

Abstract:
The Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network initiated an acoustic monitoring program for bats in 2015. At Indiana Dunes National Park, monitoring began in 2016. This report presents results for the 2016–2019 surveys. Acoustic recordings were analyzed using the software program Kaleidoscope Pro and a subset of files were manually reviewed to confirm species identifications. Seven of the eight bat species previously documented at the park were reconfirmed. These include big brown bat, eastern red bat, hoary bat, silver-haired bat, evening bat, little brown bat, and tricolored bat. In addition, the Kaleidoscope software classified some acoustic files to northern long-eared bat and Indiana bat, however none of these recordings were verified through manual vetting. Activity levels for six of the nine species (big brown bat, hoary bat, silver-haired bat, evening bat, northern long-eared bat, and Indiana bat) appeared to be stable or slightly increasing. For northern long-eared and Indiana bats, observed activity levels were very low in all four years, so we may not have adequate data to assess trends for those species. The remaining three species (eastern red bat, little brown bat, and tricolored bat) showed slightly decreasing trends.

Abstract:
I conducted bat surveys at Richmond National Battlefield Park to assess the status of bat communities following potential impacts of the disease white-nose syndrome. This disease, caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, has severely reduced populations of several bat species in the eastern United States, threatening some with regional extirpation. Most affected species include the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus), northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis), Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis), and tricolored bat (Perimyotis subflavus). During the summers of 2016-2020, I sampled sites with acoustic bat detectors and conducted capture surveys using mist nets to characterize bat communities with a focus on documenting WNS-imperiled species. I also conducted non-reproductive, or dormant, season acoustic and capture surveys from 2017-2021, to investigate potential local wintering by bats, especially northern long-eared bats, which have recently been discovered wintering in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina. Acoustic results identified the presence of ten bat species by echolocation calls: big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis), hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus), silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans), little brown bat, northern long-eared bat, Indiana bat, evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis), tricolored bat, and Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis). Capture surveys documented big brown bats, eastern red bats, silver-haired bats, and evening bats. To examine habitat associations of bat species, I used generalized linear mixed models of a selection of variable candidates: habitat type, distance to water, minimum nightly temperature, and nightly precipitation to predict summer activity. Activity of big brown, eastern red, hoary, and Mexican free-tailed bats was highest in open habitats. Myotis spp. were most associated with mixed forest habitats. Tricolored bat activity was highest and evening bat activity was lowest in riparian and wetland habitats. To examine seasonality in bat species occurrence, I modeled acoustic activity in passes/night by Julian date using generalized additive models. Activity of big brown, eastern red, little brown, and tricolored bats was highest during summer. Activity of northern long-eared and Indiana bats was very low overall but was also highest in the summer. Tree bat species hoary, silver-haired, and Mexican free-tailed bat activity was highest in the spring and fall. Dormant season results suggest some winter occurrences for most bat species. Visual validation of echolocation calls revealed misidentifications were problematic for Myotis spp. little brown bat, northern long-eared bat, and Indiana bat, but diagnostic calls of all three species were recorded. Acoustic passes identified as northern long-eared bats suggest some individuals may be wintering nearby, but winter activity was very low and not indicative of large overwintering populations.

During the summers of 2016–2020, I sampled sites with acoustic bat detectors and conducted capture surveys using mist nets to characterize bat communities with a focus on documenting WNS-imperiled species. I also conducted non-reproductive, or dormant, season acoustic and capture surveys from 2017–2021, to investigate potential local wintering by bats, especially northern long-eared bats, which have recently been discovered wintering in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina. An internal NPS version of this document that includes an appendix with capture survey site coordinates is available and may be requested as needed.

Abstract:
I conducted bat surveys at Colonial National Historical Park to assess the status of bat communities following potential impacts of white-nose syndrome (WNS) since its arrival in Virginia in 2009. This disease, caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, has severely reduced populations of several bat species in the eastern United States, threatening some with regional extirpation. In the East, most-affected species include the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus), the federally-endangered northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) and Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) (USFWS 2007, USFWS 2022a), as well as the tricolored bat (Perimyotis subflavus), which has been proposed for endangered status (USFWS 2022b). I sampled sites in Yorktown and Jamestown Island with acoustic bat detectors from the spring of 2019 through the spring of 2021 and conducted capture surveys using mist nets in 2019 and 2021 to characterize seasonal occurrence of bat species with a focus on documenting WNS-imperiled species. Surveys also sought to document potential over-wintering of bats at COLO, especially northern long-eared bats, which occur year-round in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina. Acoustic results identified the presence of eleven bat species by echolocation calls: big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis), hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus), silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans), southeastern bat (Myotis austroriparius), little brown bat, northern long-eared bat, Indiana bat, evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis), tricolored bat, and Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis). Acoustic results included diagnostic echolocation calls of little brown, northern long-eared, and Indiana bats, however, presence should be interpreted with caution due to similarities of call structures among Myotis spp. bats. Capture surveys documented seven species: big brown, eastern red, hoary, silver-haired, southeastern, evening, and tricolored bats. To examine habitat associations of bat species, I used generalized linear mixed models of a selection of variable candidates: habitat type, distance to water, minimum nightly temperature, and nightly precipitation to predict summer activity by significant predictors. Activity of hoary, silver-haired, little brown, evening, tricolored, and Mexican free-tailed bats was highest in open habitats. Big brown bat and Indiana bat identifications were most associated with forest habitats. Eastern red bat activity was high in both forest and open sites. Southeastern bat activity was highest in wetland sites and was largely confined to these habitats. Northern long-eared bat activity was not significantly different among habitat types. To examine seasonality in bat species occurrence, I modeled acoustic activity in passes/night by Julian date using generalized additive models. Activity of big brown, eastern red, hoary, little brown, northern long-eared, tricolored, evening, and Mexican free-tailed bats was highest during summer. Silver-haired bat activity was highest in March indicative of seasonal migration. Hoary and Mexican free-tailed bat also exhibited high activity on several nights in the spring suggestive of migratory movement. Dormant season results suggest some winter occurrence for all identified bat species except Indiana bats. Very few characteristic calls of northern long-eared bats were observed from December through February, suggesting they winter locally in far lower abundances than in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina to the south.

Abstract:
I conducted bat surveys at Petersburg National Battlefield Park (PETE) to assess the status of bat communities following potential impacts of the disease white-nose syndrome. This disease, caused by the fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, has severely reduced populations of several bat species in the eastern United States, threatening some with regional extirpation. Most affected species include the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus), the federally-endangered northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis) and Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) (USFWS 2007, USFWS 2022a), as well as the tricolored bat (Perimyotis subflavus), which has been proposed for endangered status (USFWS 2022b). I sampled sites with acoustic bat detectors from the summer of 2016 through fall 2021 and conducted capture surveys using mist nets from 2016-2019 to characterize seasonal occurrence of bat species with a focus on documenting WNS-imperiled species. Surveys also sought to document potential over-wintering of bats at PETE, especially northern long-eared bats, which have recently been discovered wintering in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina. Acoustic results identified the presence of nine bat species by echolocation calls: big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis), hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus), silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans), little brown bat, Indiana bat, evening bat (Nycticeius humeralis), tricolored bat, and Mexican free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis). Northern long-eared bats were identified acoustically by software, but identifications were invalidated by visual review. Acoustic misidentifications also occurred for little brown and Indiana bats, but diagnostic calls were confirmed. Capture surveys documented big brown bats, eastern red bats, evening bats, and a single little brown bat. To examine habitat associations of bat species, I used generalized linear mixed models of a selection of variable candidates: habitat type, distance to water, minimum nightly temperature, and nightly precipitation to predict summer activity. Activity of big brown, hoary, silver-haired, and Mexican free-tailed bats was highest in open habitats. Little brown and eastern red bats were most associated with mixed forest habitats. Evening bat activity was highest in deciduous forests. Habitat type was not a significant predictor of activity for Indiana and tricolored bat activity. To examine seasonality in bat species occurrence, I modeled acoustic activity in passes/night by Julian date using generalized additive models. Activity of big brown, eastern red, little brown, tricolored, and evening bats was highest during summer. Activity identified as Indiana bats was very low overall but was also highest in the summer. Activity of tree bat species hoary, silver-haired, and Mexican free-tailed bat was highest during the dormant season and peak activity appeared associated with migration. Dormant season results suggest some winter activity for most bat species identified as present in the park.
