Based on material from a short story “Pickman’s Model” we may trace a number of distinct isomorphisms between the “ghouls” in the story and the supernatural people of fairies in British folklore, such as stealing and changing babies, therianthropy, connections with netherworld and timelessness, social parasitism and links with the activity of witches. The last point is especially interesting in terms of M. Murray’s outdated anthropological theories, highly favoured by Lovecraft. Beyond that, the problems of horror poe

The article deals with E. Boratynsky’s poem about a spirit of a nonviable nedonosok, or stillborn, drifting between heaven and earth. Scholars have noted the poem’s affinity with works of Dante and Goethe, as well as Plato’s philosophy and the Old Testament. The present study considers the poem’s system of motifs and images in comparison with concepts found in folklore and mythology. This chapter explores Brown’s depiction of the babe of Bethlehem in his winter ‘homilies’, or festive journalism. The chapter examines Brown’s fusion of the folkloric and magical rituals of late medieval popular religion with the modern short story form. It outlines Brown’s knowledge of nativity poetry, fine art, and drama, and studies the ways in which he inserts these earlier traditions into his nativity poetry and prose. It focuses especially on the Eucharistic implications of Brown’s nativity poetry.
