Abstract:
In this thesis we examine the method of counting BB events produced in the BaBar experiment. The original method was proposed in 2000, but improvements to track reconstruction and our understanding of the detector since that date make it appropriate to revisit the B Counting method. We propose a new set of cuts designed to minimize the sensitivity to time-varying backgrounds. We find the new method counts BB events with an associated systematic uncertainty of ±0.6%.

Abstract:
The BABAR experiment at the PEP-II e+e- collider at SLAC in California started taking data in May 1999. The aim of the experiment is to study CP violation in the B meson system. A central part of the BABAR detector is CsI(TI) electromagnetic calorimeter. To make precision measurements with a calorimeter in a high luminosity environment requires that the crystals are well calibrated and continually monitored for radiation damage. However, this should not impact the total integrated luminosity. To achieve this goal a fibre-optic light pulser system was designed. The light sources chosen were Xenon flash lamps. A novel light distribution method was developed using an array of graded index microlenses. Initial results from performance studies are presented.

Abstract:
In this thesis methods of calibration of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the BABAR experiment will be introduced. Additionally a method was developed to take into account the different energy losses between the edges and centres of the crystals. An improvement of the energy resolution of photons was achieved by 15%, depending on the energy. For Y(4S) and continuum events a momentum spectrum of inclusively produced neutral pions (Y(4S) -> pi0 X and e+e- -> q anti-q -> pi0 X, respectively) was determined. For continuum events also a momentum depending angle distribution was determined. From these distributions the average number of produced pi0 per event was calculated. The results for B decays and continuum events are n(B) =2,268+-0,008+-0,115 and n(Continuum)=3,388+-0,005+-0,172, respectively. These values were compared with Monte Carlo simulations and with other analyses
In dieser Arbeit werden die Kalibrierungsmethoden des elektromagnetischen Kalorimeters des BABAR-Experiments vorgestellt. Entwickelt wurde dabei eine Methode, die die unterschiedlichen Energieverluste zwischen Kristallrändern und Kristallmitten berücksichtigt. Es wurde dabei eine Verbesserung der Energieauflösung von Photonen, abhängig von der Energie, von bis zu 15% erreicht. Für Y(4S)- und Kontinuumsereignisse wurden die Impulsspektren und für letztere die impulsabhängigen Richtungsverteilungen inklusiv produzierter neutraler Pionen (Y(4S) -> pi0 X bzw. e+e- -> q anti-q -> pi0 X) bestimmt. Aus diesen Verteilungen wurde die mittleren Anzahl erzeugter pi0 pro Ereignis ermittelt. Für B-Zerfälle bzw. Kontinuumsereignisse ergaben sich n(B) =2,268+-0,008+-0,115 bzw. n(Kontinuum)=3,388+-0,005+-0,172. Diese Werte wurden mit Monte-Carlo-Simulationen und mit anderen Analysen verglichen

L'expérience BABAR a pour objectif de rechercher et de mesurer la violation de CP dans le secteur des mésons B et de contraindre les paramètres du modèle standard. Une des originalités de son dispositif expérimental est le DIRC, le détecteur à effet Cerenkov utilisé pour distinguer les pions des kaons chargés. Une table de correction est se en place pour corriger ses défauts d'alignement, et permet au DIRC d'atteindre ses performances nominales, c'est à dire une séparation entre kaon et pion de 4*(sigma) pour une quantité de mouvement de 3 GeV/c. La recherche de violation de CP dans le canal de désintégration du B^0 en pπ devrait permettre de contraindre l'angle α du triangle d'unitarité, un des paramètres du modèle standard. L'objectif de cette analyse est de mesurer les paramètres de violation de CP ainsi que les autres paramètres entrant dans la description de la distribution de probabilité du temps de désintégration. Une méthode de maximum de vraisemblance combine l'information temporelle et des variables discriminantes du bruit de fond du continuum e+e-→qq', dont certaines sont résumées dans un réseau de neurones. L'autre bruit de fond, constitué des autres modes de désintégration du B, est pris en compte par des termes correctifs dans l'ajustement. Cette analyse présente à ce jour les meilleures mesures pour ce canal, et semble donner une indication de la violation directe de CP. Pour interpréter ces mesures en termes de contraintes sur les paramètres du modèle standard, il est nécessaire d'utiliser un modèle pour prédire la contribution à longue distance des amplitudes de désintégration. Pour un exemple de tel modèle, la "factorisation QCD", un test de validation compare les prédictions aux données expérimentales sur les désintégrations non charmées du méson B. Ce test semble indiquer un désaccord, qui pourrait être réduit dans l'avenir par une meilleure connaissance expérimentale et théorique des désintégrations du B
The goal of the BABAR experiment is to search and measure CP violation in the sector of the B mesons et constrain the parameters of the standard model. One of the original features of its experimental design is the DIRC, the Cerenkov detector used to separate charged pions and kaons. A look-up table is implemented to correct for its alignment, and allows the DIRC to reach its design performance, a pion versus kaon separation power of 4*(sigma) at a momentum of 3 GeV/c. The search for CP violation in the decay channel B^0 to pπ should result in constraints on the angle α of the unitarity triangle, one of the parameters of the standard model. The goal of this analysis is to measure CP violating parameters along with the other parameters entering the description of the decay time probability distribution function. A maximum likelihood method combines the time information with e+e-→ qq' continuum background discriminating variables, some of which are summarized in a neural network. The other background, constituted of the other decay modes of the B, is taken into account with corrective terms in the fit. This analysis yields the best measurements for this channel up to date, and results in an indication of direct CP violation. In order to use these measurements to constrain the parameters of the standard model, the long distance contribution of the decay amplitudes has to be extracted from a model. For one such model, "QCD factorisation", a validation test confronts the model predictions with the experimental data on the charmless decays of the B mesons. The present status seems to be a disagreement, which could be reduced in the future with better experimental and theoretical knowledge of B decays

Abstract:
This thesis presents a study of inclusive production of charmonium mesons at the U (4S) resonance ( s = 10.58 GeV) and in the continuum up to 50 MeV below the resonance. The full dataset of BABAR Run 1 (an integrated luminosity of 23.3 fb-1) is used in the analysis.
The branching fractions of B mesons to J/ y , y (2S), cc1 and cc2 are measured: BB→J/yX = (1.044 +/- 0.013 +/- 0.035)%, BB→y2S X = (0.274 +/- 0.020 +/- 0.029)%, BB→cc1X = (0.378 +/- 0.034 +/- 0.026)% and BB→cc2X < 0.21%. By equating the y (2S) production rates calculated using the y (2S) → ℓ+ℓ- final state to those using y (2S) → pi+pi- J/ y , we obtain competitive measurements of the y (2S) → ℓ+ℓ- branching fractions: By2S →e+e- = (0.815 +/- 0.090 +/- 0.090)% and By2S →m+m- = (0.700 +/- 0.083 +/- 0.093)%. The cross-section for J/ y production in e+e - annihilation in the continuum is measured to be: se+e-→J/yX = (2.47 +/- 0.21 +/- 0.20) pb. This cross-section excludes J/ y mesons from B decays, two-photon or initial state radiation processes. An upper limit on the inclusive non-BB¯ J/ y decays of the U (4S) is set at BU4S →J/yX < 5.1 x 10-4, for J/ y with the center of mass momentum above 2 GeV/c. The helicity, the center of mass production angle distribution and the center of mass momentum distribution of the reconstructed J/ y mesons are presented.

Prompt production of J/Ψ or Ψ(2S) in association with a second charmonium state has been observed by both the BABAR and Belle experiments in e⁺e⁻ annihilation around √s = 10.58 GeV. These processes provide an opportunity to study both perturbative and non-perturbative effects in QCD and to search for new charmonium states recoiling against the reconstructed J/Ψ or Ψ(2S). Following the idea of considering three-body decays with final state B to DKpi in the pursuit of the notoriously elusive unitary angle gamma, the initial steps towards its measurement are presented. Using a sample of approximately 88 million BBbar pairs collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II collider, a measurement of the branching fractions BO to D+- KO pi-+ and BO to D*+- KO pi-+ are presented for the entire Dalitz region: Br(BO to D+- KO pi-+) = (4. 97 +- 0. 69 +- 0. 55) x 10^(-4) Br(BO to D*+- KO pi-+) = (3. 00 +- 0. 66 +- 0. 29) x 10^(-4). In both decay modes the dominant resonance is the K*+-(892) between the neutral kaon and the charged pion. Measuring the branching fractions of the corresponding resonant two-body decays yields: Br(BO to D+- K*-+) = (4. 78 +- 0. 58 +- 0. 53) x 10^(-4) Br(BO to D*+- K*-+) = (3. 22 +- 0. 59 +- 0. 29) x 10^(-4). Performing a time-dependent CP asymmetries fit of the resonant decay mode BO to D+- K*-+ yields: C = 0. 93 +- 0. 18 +- 0. 03 ABS[lambda] = 0. 19 +- 0. 25 +- 0. 04 S = 0. 18 +- 0. 28 +- 0. 02 Delta S = 0. 08 +- 0. 28 +- 0. 02. Abstract:
Nous avons présenté dans cette habilitation à diriger des recherches une étude détaillée des désintégrations hadroniques des mésons B en résonance charmonium et kaon B→(J/ψ,ψ(2S),χc0,χc1,χc2)K(*). La description phénoménologique de ces désintégrations est rendue difficile par l'échange de gluons entre les particules de l'état final. L'hypothèse de factorisation, basée sur le principe de transparence de couleur, est fréquemment utilisée pour décrire ce type de processus. Nos mesures ont non seulement confirmé la non validité de cette hypothèse dans sa forme la plus simple (factorisation naive), mais ont aussi permis de quantifier les contributions non factorisables. Pour les trois résonances J/ψ,ψ(2S) et χc1, nous avons effectué la première mesure globale des rapports d'embranchement. La plupart de nos valeurs sont les plus précises publiées à ce jour. Nous avons aussi effectué la première analyse angulaire complête des trois résonances dont nous avons extrait la fraction de polarisation longitudinale. Nous avons confirmé les résultats précédents, avec une bien meilleure précision. La présence de phases fortes dans l'état final a aussi été confirmée par la mesure du décalage de près de 9 déviations standards par rapport à zéro de la différence δ║−δ⊥. Nos résultats sur le χc0 sont compatibles avec des prédictions phénoménologiques basée sur la présence de fortes contributions non factorisables. Abstract:
A light pulser system for the Babar CsI(Tl) calorimeter, capable of monitoring the light yield of the 6580 crystals and of checking the function and linearity of the readout electronics, was developed in a collaboration with groups from Bochum and Edinburgh. The light pulser system is based on the coupling of light from Xenon flashlamps through optical fibers into the individual crystals. The absolute intensity is measured by two special reference systems whose stability is monitored using a radioactive source. During the construction phase the light pulser was used to check the electronics in order to ensure its functioning before the insertion of the calorimeter into the detector where the preamplifier electronics is inaccessable for repair. In monitoring the short term performance of the light pulser system, the stability over one week is better than 0.15 %. Over six months between February and August 2000 the crystal response, as measured by the light pulser, of the three rings of the endcap that are closest to the beam dropped by up to 2 % in comparison with the three outer rings of the endcap, due to radiation damage. Through linearity measurements with the light pulser a flaw in the ADC boards of the calorimeter electronics, which will be fixed in the near future, and cross-talk between channels was found. By a software correction of these effects implemented by members of the collaboration an improvement of the energy resolution of the calorimeter was achieved
Fuer das CsI(Tl)-Kalorimeter des Babar-Detektors wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Gruppen aus Bochum und Edinburgh ein Lichtpulsersystem entwickelt, das in der Lage ist, die Lichtausbeute der 6580 Kristalle zu monitorieren und die Funktionsfaehigkeit und Linearitaet der Kalorimeterelektronik zu ueberpruefen. Das Lichtpulsersystem basiert auf der Einkopplung des Lichts von Xenon-Blitzlampen ueber Lichtleitfasern in einzelne Kristalle. Die absolute Lichtmenge wird durch zwei spezielle Lichtnormale gemessen, deren Stabilitaet durch eine radioaktive Quelle monitoriert wird. In der Aufbauphase kam der Lichtpulser fuer die Ueberpruefung der Elektronik zum Einsatz, um deren Funktionsfaehigkeit sicherzustellen, bevor das Kalorimeter in den Detektor eingebaut wurde, weil danach die Vorverstaerkerelektronik fuer Reparaturen nicht mehr zugaenglich war. In der Monitorierung ist die Kurzzeitstabilitaet des Lichtpulsersystems ueber eine Woche besser als 0,15 %. Ueber sechs Monate zwischen Februar und August 2000 sank, bedingt durch Strahlenschaeden, die mit dem Lichtpulser gemessene Antwort der Kristalle fuer die strahlnaechsten drei Ringe der Endkappe um bis zu 2 % staerker als in den aeusseren drei Ringen der Endkappe. Durch die Linearitaetsmessungen mit dem Lichtpulser konnte ein Fehler in der Kalorimeterelektronik im Bereich der ADC-Karten, der in naher Zukunft behoben werden wird, sowie ein Uebersprechen zwischen den Kanaelen gefunden werden. Durch Softwarekorrekturen dieser Effekte von seiten der Kollaboration konnte eine Verbesserung der Energieaufloesung des Kalorimeters erreicht werden

Abstract:
Motivated by the recent discoveries of exotic and possible crypto-exotic states, presented in this thesis is an inclusive search for the production of a crypto-exotic baryon state called R(3520) with hidden charm in e+e− interactions at a centre of mass energy of 10.58 GeV in the data collected at the energy Υ(4S) resonance with the BABAR detector using a data set of 228 fb−1. Hints about the existence of the R(3520) state were reported in an analysis of data from a 2m hydrogen bubble chamber experiment at CERN. Two decay modes of the R(3520) resonance were investigated in this thesis R(3520) → pK+π−π−K0 S and R(3520) → pK+π−K∗−. The invariant mass spectra of the two final states were analysed and no evidence for the state was observed. Therefore, Upper limits were set on the differential cross section for the production of the R(3520) as a function of the momentum in the centre of mass frame. Using these differential cross sections the total cross sections were calculated with two different hypotheses for the width of the resonance, 1MeV/c2 and 7MeV/c2, with the additional assumption that the momentum spectrum for the production of state is flat. The upper limits for the total cross section production of the R(3520) for the decay mode p π− π− K+ K0 S were calculated to be 32 fb/GeV/c (48 fb GeV/c) with the 1MeV/c2 (7 MeV/c2) width. For the decay mode p π− K+ K∗− the upper limits on the total cross section were 62 fb/ GeV/c (93 fb/ GeV/c) for the 1MeV/c2 (7 MeV/c2) width hypotheses. The studies were repeated with the additional requirement that there was an additional antiproton in the event. The invariant mass spectra were analysed and no evidence for the state was found. Therefore, upper limits were calculated on the differential cross sections and the total cross sections for the production of this state. The upper limits for the total cross section production of the R(3520) for the decay mode p π− π− K+ K0 S were calculated to be 25 fb/GeV (36 fb/ GeV) with the 1 MeV/c2 (7 MeV/c2) width. For the decay mode p π− K+ K∗− the upper limits on the total cross section were 62 fb/GeV/c (83 fb/ GeV/c) for the 1MeV/c2 (7 MeV/c2) width hypotheses. This shows that the nonobservance of the state was unaffected by the condition that the baryon number was conserved in the event. The thesis also investigates the feasibility of using a new evolutionary algorithm, Gene Expression Programming, for an event selection problem relevant for the physics analysis presented here. The new methods allowed automatic identification of selection criteria similar to those based on cuts applied on event variables. This showed the feasibility of the new method.

Le principe des systèmes de synthèse de la parole actuels est de sélectionner, dans une importante base de données de parole lue, des unités acoustiques de taille variable, et de les concaténer pour reconstruire un signal de parole le plus naturel possible. Cette sélection est réalisée en minimisant deux fonctions de coûts: le coût de cibles et le coût de concaténation. Le premier établi une distance entre la phrase cible (texte d'entrée) et ce qui est disponible dans la base, le second quantifie la qualité de la jonction entre deux unités étudiées. À l'aide de ces deux fonctions, toutes les combinaisons possibles sont parcourues, puis la meilleure est sélectionnée. Notre approche est de calculer chacune des fonctions selon différents critères de hauts niveaux. Le système est donc facilement adaptable à tous types de voix car peu dépendant de leurs caractéristiques physiques. Le système développé dans le cadre de cette thèse peut aussi être utilisé comme module de prédiction de la prosodie. Sans analyse syntaxique et sans règles, il est possible de calculer les valeurs de F0 et de durée à partir de la base de données. La partie segmentale de la synthèse est alors prise en charge par un synthétiseur acoustique à partir de diphones (MBROLA). Une évaluation montre que les résultats ainsi obtenus sont comparables avec la prosodie calculée à partir de règles. Pour finir, nous avons analysé les différences entre les voix de synthèse et leurs versions originales (naturelle). Cette étude a été réalisée pour 20 locuteurs (10 hommes et 10 femmes). Elle met en avant la difficulté de déterminer des paramètres mesurables permettant de prédire si une voix est appropriée à la synthèse. Ainsi, la qualité d'une voix de synthèse dépend pour beaucoup de la régularité de la prosodie et du timbre de la voix
State of the art Text-to-Speech synthesis systems are based on the principle of variable length unit selection in significantly large databases of read speech. These acoustic units of variable sizes are then concatenated for speech synthesis. Unit selection is carried out by minimizing two cost functions: the target cost and the concatenation cost. The first cost computes a distance between the target sentence (input text) and what is available in the database, the second cost quantifies the quality of the junction between two particular units. With these two functions, the cost of all the possible combinations are estimated, and then the best candidate chain is selected. Our approach is to calculate each function according to various high level criteria. The system is well suited to all voice types because it is not very dependent on their physical characteristics. The selection/concatenation synthesis system developed in the framework of this thesis can also be used for prosodic prediction. Without any rules or syntactic analysis, the optimal selection algorithm is able to compute F0 and duration values according to a given speech database. This prosodic module can be associated to a diphone acoustic synthesizer. In our experiments, we used the MBROLA diphone system for comparing 4 different conditions for prosodic prediction (2 rule systems, natural copy prosody and selection based prosody). The last part of the thesis is devoted to analyses of the differences between synthetic voices and the original voices from which they originate. This study was performed for 20 synthetic speakers (10 men and 10 women). It proved difficult to determine efficient acoustic parameters for predicting the appropriateness of a particular voice for synthesis. However, it seems that the quality of synthetic voices depends for much on the prosodic regularity and one the voice quality

This work presents a precision determination of the mass difference of neutral and charged B mesons, m(B0) - m(B+). The measurement is based on a data sample of about 232 million B-meson pairs recorded with the BABAR detector at the e+e- storage-ring system PEP-II. In events of e+e- --&gt; Upsilon(4S) --&gt; B Bbar, B0 and B+ mesons are fully reconstructed in decays B+ --&gt; J/psi K+ and B0 --&gt; J/psi K*0 using the subsequent decays J/psi --&gt; l+ l- and K*0 --&gt; K+ pi- for the reconstruction of J/psi mesons and K*0 resonances, respectively. The determination of the mass difference from the measurement of the invariant B-meson masses suffers from detector-resolution effects. To reach the desired sensitivity, the B-meson momenta are measured in the center-of-mass system, the Upsilon(4S) rest frame. Since their energy is also known in the center-of-mass system, this method leads to the mass difference using the relativistic energy-momentum relation. For this purpose, three different fit methods are performed to the spectra of the B momenta. The obtained result is m(B0) - m(B+) = (+0.33 +- 0.05 +- 0.03) MeV/c^2, where the first error is statistical and the second estimates the systematic uncertainty of this measurement, which agrees well with the current world average. However, the combined error of this measurement is substantially smaller than that in the current world average, and the significance of m(B0) - m(B+) being non-zero has exceeded the 5 sigma level.

Für das CsI(Tl)-Kalorimeter des Babar-Detektors wurde ein Verfahren zur Kalibration entwickelt und implementiert. Es ist in der Lage, für alle 6580 Kristalle absolute Kalibrationskonstanten zu bestimmen und die zeitliche Änderung der Kristalleigenschaften zu monitorieren. Der Algorithmus basiert auf dem Vergleich von gemessener Energie und erwarteter deponierter Energie von Teilchen aus Ereignissen der Bhabha-Streuung. Die gemessene Energie wird aus einem Cluster von getroffenen Kristallen bestimmt, wobei die Kalibrierung der Einzelkristallenergien durch Multiplikation mit einer Kalibrationskonstante c erfolgt. Die erwartete Energie wird aus einer Monte-Carlo-Simulation extrahiert. Die Minimierung eines chi^2-Terms - in dem erwartete und gemessene Cluster-Energien verglichen werden - bezüglich der Kalibrationskonstanten c, führt zu einem linearen Gleichungssystem mit einer 6580*6580 Matrix, die numerisch invertiert werden kann. Die Methode kalibriert die Kristalle im Energiebereich von 2,5 bis 8 GeV. Bei einer Luminosität von 3*10^33 Ereignissen pro cm^2 und s erlaubt die hohe Rate an Bhabha-Ereignissen am PEP-II-Beschleuniger eine Kalibration mit einer statistischen Genauigkeit von 0,32 % innerhalb von 12 Stunden. Der Einfluss systematischer Unsicherheiten wurde untersucht und zu +0,81% -0,72% abgeschätzt. Durch die Kalibration konnten Energieauflösungen sigma_E / E von 1,8% bei Elektronen mit einer Energie von 7,5 GeV erreicht werden. Im Jahr 2000 wurde von Mitte Mai bis Ende Oktober ein Absinken der Lichtausbeute der Kristalle der Endkappe von etwa 2,8% beobachtet
A technique to calibrate the CsI(Tl) calorimeter of the Babar experiment was developed and implemented. The method allows a calculation of absolute calibration constants for all 6580 crystals. With these constants, a monitoring of the change of the light yield of the crystals is possible. The algorithm is based on the comparison of the measured energy and the expected deposited energy of particles in Bhabha scattering events. The measured energy is calculated from a cluster of hit crystals. The individual crystal energies are calibrated by a multiplication with a calibration constant c. The expected energy is extracted from a Monte-Carlo-Simulation. Minimizing a chi^2 term - which compares the expected and the measured cluster energies - with respect to the constants c yields a system of linear equations with a 6580x6580 matrix, that can be inverted numerically. The crystals are calibrated in an energy range of 2.5 to 8 GeV. The large rate of Bhabha scattering events at the PEP-II accelerator allows a calibration with a statistical precision of 0.32% within 12 hours of data taking at a luminosity of 3*10^33 events per square centimeter and second. The influence of systematic uncertainties was studied and estimated to be +0.81% -0.72%. Due to the calibration an energy resolution sigma_E / E of 1.8% could be obtained for electrons with an energy of 7.5 GeV. With the calibration constants a decrease in the lightyield of the endcap crystals of 2.8% could be observed between May and October 2000

Dans cette thèse nous présentons des études sur les mésons B effectués en utilisant les données enregistrées par l'expérience Babar auprès de PEP-II à SLAC. D'abord nous présentons la recherche des désintégrations B+→D+K(*)0. Ces modes de désintégration sont intéressants car il s'agit de processus d'annihilation qui fournit des informations importantes sur la dynamique de la désintégration des mésons beaux et les éléments de la matrice CKM, Vij. Les résultats obtenus sur ces modes de désintégration peuvent être utilisés dans des ajustements phénoménologiques. Cela permet de traduire les mesures sur les amplitudes chargées B+→D+K(*)0 en estimations sur les amplitudes B0→D0K(*)0 supprimées par Vub. L'analyse expérimentale est effectuée en utilisant plusieurs modes de désintégration du méson D chargé. Nous n'avons obtenu aucune évidence significative de signal et les limites supérieures sur les rapports d'embranchement suivants ont été établies. Dans la deuxième partie de la thèse nous présentons des études sur la violation de CP dans le système des mésons B et en particulier la mesure de l'angle γ du Triangle d'Unitarité. L'angle γ est la phase relative entre les éléments Vub et Vcb de la matrice CKM. Un paramètre crucial qui détermine la sensibilité à γ est le rapport r entre les amplitudes de transition b→u et b→c. Dans cette thèse nous présentons une analyse du canal de désintégration des mésons B: B+→D0K+. Ces désintégrations sont étudiées en utilisant la méthode ADS et le méson neutre D est reconstruit dans son état final Kππ0. En combinant cette analyse avec une analyse similaire qui utilise l'état final Kπ des D0 le rapport r et l'angle γ ont été déterminés.

Abstract:
The BABAR Collaboration is a high energy physics experiment located at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. The primary goal of the experiment is to study charge and parity violation in the B-meson sector, however the copious production of B mesons decaying to other final states allows for a wide-ranging physics program. In particular, one can access the charmonium system via colour-suppressed b —> c decays of the type B —> ccBAR K. This thesis presents a study of B —> ccBAR γK decays where ccBAR includes J/ψ and ψ(2S), and K includes K±, K°s and K*(892). The particular emphasis is on a search for the radiative decays X(3872) —> J/ψγ and X(3872) —> ψ(2S)γ. The X(3872) state is a recently-discovered resonance of undetermined quark composition, speculatively a conventional charmonium state or exotic four-quark di-meson molecule. This research is also sensitive to the well-known radiative charmonium decays B —> Xcl,2K, which are used as verification for the analysis technique. This dissertation sets the best B —> Xc1K branching fraction measurements to date, and sees the first evidence for factorization-suppressed B⁰ —> Xc2K*⁰ decay at a level of 3,6σ. It also provides evidence for X(3872) J/ψγ and X(3872) —> ψ(2S)γ with 3.6σ and 3.3σ significance, respectively. The product of branching fractions B(B± X(3872)K± . B(X(3872) —> J/ψγ = (2.8 ± O.8(stat.) ± O.2(syst.)) x 10⁻⁶ and B(B± —> X(3872)K). B(X(3872) —> ψ(2S)γ )=(9.5±2.7(stat.)±0.9(syst.)) x 10⁻⁶ are measured. These results improve upon previous X(3872) —> J/ψγ measurements, and represent the first evidence for X(3872) —> ψ(2S)γ.

The decay B → K*l^+l^-, where the l^+l^- can be e^+e^- or μ^+μ^-, resulting from the b → s flavour changing neutral current decay is highly sensitive to the presence of new physics. The angular observables describing the K* polarisation (FL) and the forward backward asymmetry (AFB) are first measured in two regions of di-lepton mass squared using a dataset of 384 million BB pairs collected by the BaBar detector on the PEP-II rings at SLAC. A second measurement was made in four regions of di-lepton mass squared using a dataset of 468 million BB pairs.

Because such decays must proceed through 1-loop or higher order processes, they are rare and their amplitudes are particularly sensitive to interference from other FCNC interactions beyond the SM.
