In 2010, researchers at the Bach-Archiv Leipzig rediscovered a manuscript treatise by the central German organist and theorist Jacob Adlung titled “Anweisung zum Fantasieren” (Instruction in Improvisation), dating from c. 1726–27. The treatise, which is investigated here for the first time in print, contains twenty-eight typical baroque voice-leading patterns. Although Adlung demonstrates the variation of these patterns in detail, he remains largely silent regarding their concatenation into larger structures. Die Bibliothek des Bach-Archivs besitzt eine einzigartige Sammlung an Dokumenten und Materialien zu Leben und Wirken Johann Sebastian Bachs und seiner Musikerfamilie. Mit der kompletten Neugestaltung stand von Anfang an das Ziel im Vordergrund, die Studien- und Arbeitsbedingungen für die Nutzer der Bibliothek wesentlich zu verbessern und langfristig konservatorisch bestmögliche Konditionen der Aufbewahrung für die gesamte Sammlung zu schaffen.

Das Bach-Archiv Leipzig hat im September mit der Digitalisierung der Sammlung Gorke begonnen. Die Leipziger Forschungseinrichtung versteht sich als musikalisches Kompetenzzentrum am Hauptwirkungsort Johann Sebastian Bachs. Sein Zweck ist, Leben, Werk und Wirkungsgeschichte des Komponisten und der weit verzweigten Musikerfamilie Bach zu erforschen, sein Erbe zu bewahren und als Bildungsgut zu vermitteln. Im Bewusstsein der Bedeutung Bachs erfüllt es im historischen Bosehaus am Thomaskirchhof einen umfassenden und vielfältigen Auftrag für eine breite internationale Öffentlichkeit.

Abstract:
Hinter „Bach Digital“ verbirgt sich die Idee einer digitalen Bibliothek aller erhaltenen Originalhandschriften Johann Sebastian Bachs. Das seit 2008 von der DFG geförderte Projekt wird vom Bach-Archiv Leipzig, der Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin und der SLUB Dresden betreut, in denen etwa 90% der Originalhandschriften überliefert sind. Um in absehbarer Zeit alle Bach-Autographe zu vereinen, werden Vorgespräche mit der Library of Congress in Washington, der New York Public Library und der British Library in London geführt.

As they step into the same rivers, other and still other waters flow upon them. —Heraclitus Watery metaphors prove irresistible as I reflect on the central subject matter of this volume—Bach. The streams of prose about Johann Sebastian Bach that have emanated from the pens of myriad writers since the eighteenth century have to date coalesced in a sea of Bach scholarship that appears to be ever rising (over 73,000 titles are available in the online “Bach-Bibliographie” maintained by the Bach-Archiv Leipzig), but whose shorelines as yet remain quite firmly delineated. Or, to turn the metaphor around, Bach scholarship on the whole can still seem like a well-fortified island in an ocean of musicological and wider humanities/social sciences discourse that laps up against its shores without any serious risk of getting its inhabitants’ feet too wet. For this island territory, thankfully, existential threats in the form of floods or tsunamis remain a fairly distant prospect.
