Full textThis work deals with the process of elaborating guitar fingerings for J. S. Bach’s Ciaccona BWV 1004 (original for violin). The aim was to develop a left hand fingering able to reflect the musical intentions of the present author. To this end, a model of analysis was established, in which the musical texture is divided and classified, based on theoretical references, into the following categories: melodic, harmonic, motivic and polyphonic. By analyzing the fingering used on transcriptions, and comparing it with the results of this research, we conclude that we can question a suggested fingering, because it reflects nothing more than the decisions of its author, whether musical or technical. From this we can deduce that they change according to our own decisions.

Full textEchography is nowadays one of the most popular medical diagnosis modalities. It enables real-time observation the motion of moving organs which facilitates the diagnosis of pathologies for physician. Echocardiography [1, 2], blood flow imaging [3, 4] and elastography [5-7] are the favorite domains of motion estimation in using of echography (e.g., due to its high frame-rate capacity). Thus the requirements for imaging with high quality are on the primary place. In cardiac imaging, the conventional imaging system is somehow limited in the transverse direction (the direction perpendicular to the beam axis). Working on the image formation, this problem can be addressed by modifying the beamforming scheme in order to introduce transverse oscillations (TOs) in the system point spread function (PSF). Transverse oscillation techniques have shown their potential for improving the accuracy of local motion estimation in the transverse direction (i.e., the direction perpendicular to the beam axis). The conventional design of TOs in linear geometry, which is based on the Fraunhofer approximation, relates PSF and apodization function through a Fourier transform. Motivated by the adaptation of TOs in echocardiography, we propose a specific beamforming approach based on back-propagation in order to build TOs in sectorial geometry. The performance of the proposed back-propagation method has been studied gradually, in comparison with the Fourier transform, such as in evaluation of the quality of PSF, in estimation of simulated cardiac motion and in experiments study, etc. The quantified results demonstrate the proposed method leads to better controlled TOs images than the conventional beamforming. Another method based on plane wave decomposition and a different back-propagation principle has been presented. This method is better taking into account the 2D property of PSF, by decomposing the PSF into a set of plane waves directionally, back-propagating them to the probe, by using the superposition results as excitations, a simulated PSF with high accordance to the theoretical one is acquired. By adapting this method to sectorial geometry, the quality of PSF obtained in front of probe is better using the plane wave decomposition method than that of Fourier relation, but it is limited for the scanning on the side of probe, so the further work will be addressed to adapting the plane wave decomposition method to the complete sectorial imaging

Full textThe research topic addressed in this paper is a visual motif circulating widely among the arts: the figure seen from behind. Through notions that I have been led to further or develop – appearance, inevidence, dorsality, I examine how this posture depicts a way of inhabiting the image and its world, and analyze its implications in artistic practices as well as in the philosophical and social field. In order to carry out this survey, I was inspired by a gesture of Aby Warburg, the creation of atlases of images. Atlas making allowed me to reveal three expressive modalities of the back running through the history of art and cinema, and which are also found within my boards. I address these questions in the first chapter of the thesis. The second chapter, titled "Repli (s)", focuses on my first picture board, devoted to figures from behind who avoid and sneak away, conveying a withdrawal of expressive meaning. The third chapter addresses my second picture board, in which I sought to depict a form of absorption led by the figure from behind since the Romantic Age.The fourth and last chapter, entitled "Exclusion (s)", examine a violence committed upon the subject. By focusing on the portrayal of African-Americans in American plantation films, I try to show how a form of aesthetic, social, and political exclusion has been created by the representation from behind. What are withdrawn, absorbed or excluded characters telling us in view of the frontality that still prevail today? The figures seen from behind, as presented in my thesis, introduce a dorsality of representations and of existence

Full textA prerequisite for aeroelastic stability prediction inturbomachines is the understanding of the fluctuatingaerodynamic forces acting on the blades. Unsteady transonicflows are complex because of mutual interactions betweentravelling pressure waves, outlet disturbances, shock motion, and fluctuating turbulent boundary layers. Complex phenomenaappear in the shock/boundary layer region and produce phaselags and high time harmonics, which can give a significantcontribution to the overall unsteady lift and torque, andtherefore affect flutter boundaries, cause large localstresses, or even severely damage the turbomachine.
The present research work is concerned with theunderstanding of phenomena associated with travelling waves innon-uniform transonic flows and how they affect the unsteadypressure distribution on the surface as well as the far fieldradiated sound. In similitude with turbomachines potentialinteraction, the emphasis was put on the unsteady interactionof upstream propagating acoustic waves with an oscillatingshock in 2D and 3D nozzle flows. Both numerical andexperimental studies are carried out and compared with eachother.
Results shows that the unsteady pressure distribution, bothon the bump surface and within the channel, results from thesuperposition of upstream and downstream propagating waves. Itis believed that outlet pressure perturbations propagateupstream in the nozzle, interact in the high subsonic flowregion according to the acoustic blockage theory, and arepartly reflected or absorbed by the oscillating shock, depending on the frequency of the perturbations and theintensity of the SBLI. Furthermore the shock motion amplitudeis found to be related to the mean flow gradients and localwave length of the perturbations rather than to the shockboundary layer interaction. The phase angle between incomingpressure perturbations and the shock motion increases with theperturbation frequency but also depends on the intensity of theSBLI. Additionally the phase angle "shift" observed underneaththe shock location linearly increases with the perturbationfrequency and the shock strength. Such phase shift is criticalregarding aeroelastic stability and might have a significantimpact on the phase angle of the overall aerodynamic forceacting on the blade and shift the aerodynamic damping fromstable to exciting.

Full textAround 80% of the population encounter pain in low back part of the spine, commonly also known as low back pain, at least once in the lifetime. This pathology seriously complicates the quality of life: it is oftentimes accompanied by negative economic and social consequences (e.g. incapacity for work) as well as psychological consequences (e.g. depression). From medical point of view, the biggest problem associated with this pathology is that the diagnostics of the reason for emergence of low back pain is extremely complicated (in even 90% of the cases, this reason is non-specific, no accurate mechanical dysfunction is detected that would result in the disorder). This significantly aggravates the treatment and rehabilitation process. One of the most novel ways of diagnostics for the back pain worldwide is the establishment of indicators for hip rotation range of motion in the hip joint. So far, the views of scientists on this issue are rather controversial. Therefore, taking into account the relevance of the problem and its importance for the practice of a physicaltherapist, the objective was to adjust the hypothesis that a particular relation exists between the pain in the low back part of the spine and the hip rotation range of motion in the hip joint. A research has been made to fulfill the following tasks: 1. Definition and evaluation of the hip rotation range of motion of the people suffering from chronic low back pain and their comparison by sex and age. 2... [to full text]

Full textIn the wake of decolonization, colonialist narratives have systematically been rewritten from indigenous perspectives. This phenomenon is referred to as “the Empire writes back to the centre” – a trend that asserted itself in late twentieth-century postcolonial criticism. The aim of such acts of writing back is to read colonialist texts in a Barthesian way inside-out or à l’envers, to deconstruct the Orientalist and colonialist dogmas, and eventually create a dialogue where there was only a monologue. Turning the colonial text inside-out and rereading it through the lens of a later code allows the postcolonial text to unlock the closures of its colonial precursor and change it from the inside. Under this critical scholarship, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1899) has been a particularly influential text for Chinua Achebe and V. S. Naipaul. Their novels Things Fall Apart (1958) and A Bend in the River (1979) can be seen as a rewriting of Conrad’s novella. However, before examining their different rewriting strategies, it would be fruitful to locate them within the postcolonial tradition of rewriting. While Achebe clearly stands as the leading figure of the movement, the Trinidadian novelist is, in fact, difficult to pigeonhole. Does Naipaul write back to, that is criticize, or does he rewrite, and in a way adopt and justify, imperial ideology? Since not all rewriting involves writing back in terms of anti-colonial critique, Naipaul’s position continues to be explored as the enigmatic in-betweenness and double-edgedness of an “insider” turned “outsider.” Taking cognizance of these different critical perceptions can become a way to effectively highlight Achebe’s “(mis)-reading” and Naipaul’s “(mis)-appropriation” of Conrad, a way to set the framework for the simulated conversation this thesis seeks to create between the three novelists

Full textThrough the thesis Back view(s) : photography as identity and creation space, I question my photographic practice through the phenomenology of the gaze, while facing an obsession, the desire to see my own back and the back of the others. Starting from my own body as a source of experimentation, I express the need to exist in a different way through this part of my body that remains invisible to my own gaze. This search for recognition leads me towards developing artistic protocols, to face the other from the back. While I am traveling through space and meeting the unknown, I create different spaces of reflection. The back becomes the subject being photographed and observed, the starting point of my theoretical and aesthetic research, as well as the foundation that I build with the world of art and the others. As an interface, the view of the back seems to provide a look onto an anthropological and artistic place or territoriality, suggesting another way of being, seeing and thinking the world

Full textLow back pain is a public health problem inducing economical and social consequences. Chronicity involves less than 10% of low back pain, but represents 85% of the total costs related to this pathology. In this context, it seems essential to optimize chronic low back pain rehabilitation programs to make them more effective and relevant. The purpose of this phD was then to evaluate lower limbs mechanical factors using torque- and power-velocity relationships. In a first study, knee extensors muscles and trunk flexor and extensor muscles were evaluated in chronic low back pain and healthy subjects. A significant knee extensor strength and power weakness weas observed for chronic low back pain subjects, associated with the typical trunk weakness referred to this population. The second study focused on establishing a protocol allowing assessing hip flexor and extensor torque- and power-velocity relationships. This protocol was then applied to evaluate flexor and extensor hip muscles in chronic low back pain subjects. Results, in accordance with the first study, highlighted a significant strength and power weakness for hip muscle groups in chronic low back pain relative to healthy subjects, with a greater hip extensor deficit, as it is generally observed for the trunk. In conclusion, these different studies showed the importance of proposing torque and power lower limbs rehabilitation for chronic low back pain patients to better fight against the deconditioning syndrome that affects all muscular chains in this population

Full textThis thesis deals with the integration of multimedia traffic on the uplink of the UMTS radio interface. The problem is tackled in its globality, considering jointly the resource sharing possibilities, a good characterization of the traffic to transmit and the possibilities opened in the UMTS standard. The attention is more particularly focused on MPEG4 video and data of the Internet type. The first part of the thesis provides an approach of radio resource sharing in WCDMA mode. The performances of the physical layer multiplexing mechanism with quality of transmission differentiation and the impact of the rate matching mechanism are evaluated. This analysis serves as a basis for the construction of a cost function for estimating the multiservice cellular capacity and the proposition of a quality of transmission adaptive balancing method. The second part of the thesis presents a new statistical model for MPEG4 video traffic. This model consists in a customization of the DBMAP process and allows evaluating the queueing performances analytically. The last part of the thesis integrates this set of works yielding a cooperative scheduling strategy that efficiently multiplexes the packets generated by real time and non real time multimedia applications while respecting the integrity and delay constraints. An analytical method based on M/G/1 type queueing systems theory is given for computing the delays incurred by MPEG4 video and data packets when this strategy is implemented in a UMTS network

Full textA seven-year-old child, not yet mature enough to comprehend the meaning of death, cannot mourn the loss of his mother, is cruelly punished by his aunt. That boy is Stendhal. Henri Beyle's realization of the images of solitude and death is mainly portrayed in his dead mother's bedroom, which has an erotic and incestuous atmosphere. This study explains the universe of Stendhal's unconscious representation, beginning with this unique theme: his dead mother's room which is filled with the feeling of solitude and death. The specific experience of the room continues to obsess Henri Beyle throughout his life, and his literary works are impelled by the memories or the images of his mother. The poetic images, resulting from the symbolic situation of the room, and obviously solitude and death, are numerous, and express an unconscious process of Stendhal's writing. Whether we consider death as a circumambulation around the theme of solitude, or whether we consider death as what lies inside solitude, death is regarded by Stendhal as a way to get back to his mother. His dead mother's room is both the starting and the ending point. At the heart of the imaginary work sought by Stendhal's protagonists, mother's room is easily found. Art then becomes a way to overcome the obsession with death. It's in the romantic writing that Stendhal found the empty space left by his mother, and his own room. This is the originality of Stendhal's piece

In this thesis, a batch self-learning method is proposed to automatically determine a motion fuzzy controller so that the motion of the controlled wheeled robot has a good performance. This method in each generation can be separated into three states: a control state, a controlled plant identification state, and a controller learning state. There are two fuzzy systems in this method. One is a fuzzy identifier to identify the real wheeled robot and the other is a fuzzy controller to control the wheeled robot. In the first state of control state, the motion fuzzy controller will control the real wheeled robot and the input and output data of the robot is collected, where the motion characters of the robot on the plane are included. In the second state of the controlled plant identification state, based on the obtained input and output data in the first state, a fuzzy identifier with a good approximation performance is obtained by Genetic Algorithm. In the third state of controller learning state, the fuzzy identifier obtained in the second state is viewed as the controlled plant and a fuzzy controller with a good control performance is obtained by Genetic Algorithm. These three states of the learning method will be repeated until the maximum generation is reached. The antecedent and consequent parameters of the fuzzy system are viewed as a parameter set and Genetic Algorithm is proposed to choose appropriate parameter sets so that the selected fuzzy identifier has a good approximation and the selected fuzzy controller has a good control performance. The parameters of fuzzy controller can be automatically selected by the batch self-learning method so that the obtained motion fuzzy controller has a good control performance. Moreover, different robots in different environment using the proposed method also can let the obtained controller have a good control performance. Therefore, the proposed self-learning method has a good adaptability. Some simulation results in FIRA 3D robot soccer simulator are presented to illustrate that the controller can control the robot to the destination smoothly.

Prior research pays attention to several topics concerning earing management. This study works on two issues related to firm''s cookie-jar and big-bath manipulations: (1) factors that drive firms to take these two actions, and (2) how their stock prices perform after the manipulation. We consider three dimensions of factors that can drive firms’ cookie-jar and big-bath manipulations. We find that firms tend to take a big-bath when their company locations are in the disaster area. We also find that firms have strong stock performance after natural disaster than matching samples.

In this thesis, the back-propagation neural network system is implemented for on-line learning of the ankle joint of the biped robot walking forward. The system acquires the inclining angles of the center of gravity by the inclination sensor and the joint angles by the AI servo motors when the manual teaching is applied for the on-line learning templates of the biped robot walking motions. Regarding the method and process of research, the manual teaching is approached to the motion trajectory of a biped robot, and then all rotating angles of robot joints and the inclining information of the center of gravity are detected via the sensors to be saved. Repeat the original operation route and reconfirm whether the motion trajectory is taught to fall within the center of gravity for regarding as training sample parameters for the motion trajectory. Thus, the motion trajectories of the hip joint angle, the knee joint angle, and the inclining angles of the center of gravity are conducted to approach the ankle joint through the training of the back-propagation neural network system to assure the center of gravity located inside of range of the soles of the feet. The experimental results are shown that the biped min-robot can automatically adjusted the center of body gravity during the walking motion through the back-propagation neural network system.

This research is based on particle swarm algorithm combined with back-propagation neural network to improve the optimization of robot AI motor and the training strategy of the biped robot. The system is applied with AI motor feedback signals to compute the transfer function of the AI motor, and then through the manual mode to teach the motion trajectory for the motion control parameters of the biped robot . The system is implemented by Visual Basic and Matlab as a tool for program developments. In the research method and procedure, the PD parameters of AI motors are first optimized by the particle swarm algorithm, and then the biped robot motion trajectories are trained by manual mode. The feedback signals of all angle information are recorded as the input foot information of the hip and knee angle. Afterward, the system used the back-propagation neural network training to approach the output value as the ankle angle for the assurance the center of robot gravity located within two soles of the feet. The experimental results are shown that the particle swarm algorithm is optimized the PD parameters of AI motors as well as of the back-propagation neural network training through input angles automatically approach the corresponding ankle angles so that the motion stability of the biped is ensured. Importantly, the system is successfully applied to the robot motion learning of the upstairs walking motion.

In this paper, we propose an adaptive image enlargement scheme based on iterative back-projection. Initial estimates of each enlarged image can be individually created from the spatial and temporal domains by using sub-pixel interpolation and sub-pixel motion estimation. Then, based on the initial estimates and image content, reconstructed images are derived by using a modified iterative back-projection technique and fused into a enlarged image. Finally, a low-pass filter as a post-processing is applied to reduce the blocking artifacts in the reconstructed high-resolution images. Our experiment results demonstrate that, in terms of PSNR and NQM, the proposed scheme is superior to existing methods.
