Abstract:
Used in moderation, many oils can be beneficial to one's diet and lifestyle. This book presents accurate information on more than two dozen oils, examining the health claims associated with popular oils along with the clinical research findings. In the past, consumers were warned to avoid eating foods made with coconut oil, but more recently opinions about this oil have shifted. Many people now consider olive oil to be the most healthful—but is there truth behind this idea? Today's consumers are constantly bombarded with claims regarding consumption of oils, yet references to the scientific studies assumedly behind these statements are rare. This book dispels the common myths about oils, examines the health claims associated with popular oils and fats, and presents useful information backed by scientific findings. The book's 47 entries cover common oils such as canola and olive oil to less commonly used oils, such as argan, avocado, and krill oil. The research results are gathered from international, peer-reviewed journals, providing readers with information from credible sources. An ideal resource for nutritionists, nutrition students, and anyone seeking scientifically backed information about the health benefits of oils, Healthy Oils: Fact versus Fiction serves as an indispensible tool for making informed health decisions.

Matthews, Joseph. The Evaluation and Measurement of Library Services. 2nd ed. Libraries Unlimited, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400648236.

Full text
Abstract:
This guide provides library directors, managers, and administrators in all types of libraries with complete and up-to-date instructions on how to evaluate library services in order to improve them. It's a fact: today's libraries must evaluate their services in order to find ways to better serve patrons and prove their value to their communities. In this greatly updated and expanded edition of Matthews' seminal text, you'll discover a breadth of tools that can be used to evaluate any library service, including newer tools designed to measure customer and patron outcomes. The book offers practical advice backed by solid research on virtually every aspect of evaluation, including quantitative and qualitative tools, data analysis, and specific recommendations for measuring individual services, such as technical services and reference and interlibrary loan. New chapters give readers effective ways to evaluate critical aspects of their libraries such as automated systems, physical space, staff, performance management frameworks, eBooks, social media, and information literacy. The author explains how broader and more robust adoption of evaluation techniques will help library managers combine traditional internal measurements, such as circulation and reference transactions, with more customer-centric metrics that reflect how well patrons feel they are served and how satisfied they are with the library. By applying this comprehensive strategy, readers will gain the ability to form a truer picture of their library's value to its stakeholders and patrons.

Abstract:
This chapter serves three objectives. First, it provides a narrative account of key developments in core bioengineering technologies. Second, it critically interrogates the emergence and evolution of regulatory regimes aimed at responding to perceived risks associated with these technological capabilities, highlighting how these have primarily relied on establishing ‘soft’ forms of control rather than hard edged legal frameworks backed by coercive sanctions, largely in the form of self-regulation by the scientific research community (with some notification provisions to keep the relevant government informed). Third, it provides an analysis of this regulatory evolution, focusing on the narrow construction of risk, and flagging up the possibility of alternative framings, which might have generated more inclusive and deliberative approaches to standard-setting and oversight.

Troje, Nikolaus F. The Kayahara Silhouette Illusion. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199794607.003.0081.

Full text
Abstract:
Since it was first published online by Japanese artist Nobuyuki Kayahara, the spinning silhouette of a young girl (the spinning dancer illusion) has been reposted on countless websites where it serves as an eye-catcher that lures users into clicking their way toward different forms of commercial advertisements. Spinning about a vertical axis, the perception of the figure is bistable: it can be seen as either spinning clockwise or counterclockwise, with the former interpretation apparently dominating the latter. This asymmetry generated a number of weird theories about brain laterality that further contributed to the popularity of the Kayahara silhouette on the Internet. These theories are obviously not backed by any serious research, but the animation is in fact a puzzling visual illusion. Primarily based on depth ambiguity, it employs the viewing-from-above bias and offers a number of sophisticated perceptual conflicts.

Calamita, N. Jansen, and Ayelet Berman, eds. Investment Treaties and the Rule of Law Promise. Cambridge University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9781009152990.

Full text
Abstract:
Investment treaties are said to improve the rule of law in the states which enter into them. Fearing claims, governments will internalise international investment obligations into their decision-making processes, resulting in positive spill-over effects on the rule of law. Such arguments have never been backed by empirical research. This book presents an analytical framework for thinking about the internalisation of international commitments in governmental decision making that takes account of the complexities of governance. In so doing, it provides a typology of processes whereby international treaty obligations may be internalised by governments and identifies factors which may affect whether and to what extent international commitments are internalised in governmental decision making. This framework serves as the background for the main body of the book in which empirical case studies address whether and how a select group of governments in Asia internalise international investment treaty obligations in their decision-making.

Botti, Timothy J. Ace in the Hole. Greenwood Publishing Group, Inc., 1996. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400606533.

Full text
Abstract:
Using newly released documents, the author presents an integrated look at American nuclear policy and diplomacy in crises from the Berlin blockade to Vietnam. The book answers the question why, when the atomic bomb had been used with such devastating effect against the Japanese Empire in 1945, American leaders put this most apocalyptic of weapons back on the shelf, never to be used again in anger. It documents the myopia of Potomac strategists in involving the U.S. in wars of attrition in Korea and Southeast Asia, marginal areas where American vital interests were in no way endangered. Despite the presence of hundreds, then thousands of nuclear bombs and warheads in the nation's stockpile, the greatest military weapon in history became politically impossible to use. And yet overwhelming nuclear superiority did serve its ultimate purpose in the Cold War. When American vital interests were threatened—over Berlin and Cuba—the Soviets backed down from confrontation. Despite errors in strategic judgment brought on by fear of Communist expansion, and in some cases outright incompetence, the ace in the hole proved decisive.

Spencer, Maureen, and John Spencer. 2. Burden and standard of proof: presumptions. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/he/9780198715795.003.0002.

Full text
Abstract:
The Concentrate Questions and Answers series offers the best preparation for tackling exam questions. Each book includes typical questions, bullet-pointed answer plans and suggested answers, author commentary and illustrative diagrams and flow charts. This chapter discusses the allocation of the burden of proof in civil and criminal trials, depending on who should bear the risk. In criminal trials the ‘presumption of innocence’ means that the burden is on the prosecution, unless reversed by express or implied statutory provision. The law of evidence safeguards what in some jurisdictions is a civil right backed by the constitution. It is important to understand the difference between the legal and evidential burden and the occasions where they are separately allocated. Tricky areas are where there is a divorce of the legal and evidential burden, primarily in situations where the prosecution cannot expect to put up evidence to anticipate every specific defence the accused may present.

Full text
Abstract:
Ilan Stavans has amassed a collection of cutting-edge articles that inform readers about how Latinos navigate both the mainstream medical arena and culturally specific healing traditions. This work highlights the myriad problems Latinos face in becoming fully acculturated consumers of health care. Its series of chapters by expert contributors bridges the communication gap between mainstream medical professionals who need to understand the Latino worldview and Latinos that need to adapt to the puzzling complexity of providers and insurers that make up the American health care system. Backed by research using quantitative methods and other techniques, Health Care's seven chapters cover topics ranging from infant care to teenage dating and sexual mores to prescription medication use by older adults. Much of the coverage focuses on problems of access and the ways in which Latinos move between mainstream health care, and the world of traditional remedies provided by bonicas (shops specializing in herbs and other healing items) and curanderos (folk healers).

Abstract:
Across North America, Native Americans and colonists played a variety of kicking games long before soccer's emergence in the late 1800s. The book explores the development and social impact of these sports through the rise of professional soccer after World War I. The various games called football encouraged men to form social bonds based on educational experience, occupation, ethnic identity, or military service and gave women an outlet as athletes. Football followed young people to college as higher education expanded in the nineteenth century. University play, the arrival of immigrants from Great Britain, and the backing of industrial firms helped spark the creation of organized soccer in the United States. By the early twentieth century, soccer communities had become established in many cities around the country. These communities served as a foundation for the growth that occurred following the end of World War I.

Mclay, Mark. The Republican Party and the War on Poverty: 1964-1981. Edinburgh University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3366/edinburgh/9781474475525.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides a new perspective on the American Presidency through the lens of the ascendant Republican Party and its evolving challenge to Lyndon B. Johnson’s ‘War on Poverty’ (1964-1981). A core element of Johnson’s ‘Great Society’ vision, the War on Poverty began as a series of experimental antipoverty initiatives that were imbued with the long-term aim of vastly reducing American poverty. The antipoverty effort, however, failed to achieve widespread political backing during the 1960s and 1970s, before being symbolically ended by Ronald Reagan’s social welfare cuts in 1981. Previously ignored in War on Poverty scholarship, Republican politicians and presidents consistently shaped how the ‘war’ was fought, before President Reagan took the lead in curtailing the effort in 1981. This book reconsiders why Johnson’s War on Poverty failed politically when other central tenets of his ‘Great Society’ vision have endured.

Berg, John C. Leave It in the Ground. ABC-CLIO, LLC, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798400677960.

Full text
Abstract:
Employing scientific explanations and hard data, this book shows why coal is such a problem, how the pro-coal forces got to be so powerful, and how those forces might be defeated through political activism. Coal provided the energy to build modern civilization. This energy source raised standards of living, multiplied the earth's population, and enabled people in developed countries to enjoy leisure time. Today, we know that if we burn all the coal available, climate change will continue to increase. But the use of coal isn't purely an environmental issue; there are also political and economic forces at play. This book examines the politics and environmental impact of coal production and distribution, presenting a clear point of view—that we must shift away from coal use—backed by hard data and supplying specific prescriptions for opposing and regulating the coal industry. Author John C. Berg explains how ending the burning of coal (and of oil and natural gas) is a political problem rather than a technical one; explodes the "clean coal" myth, providing scientific documentation of how burning coal emits more greenhouse gases per unit of energy than any other fuel; and describes how controlling coal use in the United States will also serve to restore the possibility of a meaningful international climate agreement. Additionally, readers will understand the critical importance of activism—from local to international—in spurring government regulation to control the coal industry, which can only be defeated politically.

Is it safe to ingest them or use them around children and pets? How can you tell if a company selling essential oils is offering a low-quality product or engaging in shady business practices? This book answers these and many more questions about these popular yet often poorly understood products. Abstract:
Abstract 50 Studies Every Orthopaedic Surgeon Should Know is a compilation of landmark studies from all subspecialties within emergency and elective trauma and orthopaedic practice. It is written in an accessible way, appropriate for an array of practicing experts, allied healthcare professionals, and students with the goal of disseminating findings from high-quality studies that have led to standardized clinical guidelines for front-line clinicians and real-world gains for patients. Chapters focus on key findings, implications for practice, study funding sources and conflicts of interest, criticisms and limitations, and results from associated studies. Each chapter also concludes with a case study, offering readers the opportunity to conceptualize the key findings in practice. Like other books in the 50 Studies series, an objective selection criterion was conducted by an international consensus to identify the most influential landmark publications that took into account the citations per year, high levels of evidence, clinical studies and trials, and available references and guidelines. This book will simplify, consolidate, and reinforce the current literature of the most important research published into digestible, manageable, and reader-friendly content for trauma and orthopaedic surgeons, practicing clinicians, trainees, students, and those led by data-driven evidence-based clinical care. The general public and patients on the receiving end of clinical care may benefit from understanding the surgical decision-making backed by international evidence and professional guidelines.

Pinfari, Marco. Terrorists as Monsters. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190927875.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book explores the use of archetypal metaphors of monstrosity in relation to terrorism. It presents two main original arguments, which are influenced by recent studies by leading philosophers and anthropologists on the social and political functions of monstrosity and monster metaphors. The first argument, developed in Part 1, explores the reasons why “terrorists” are sometimes framed as monsters by their audiences. Although this imagery serves the immediate purpose of depicting the “terrorist” as a non- or sub-human “other,” the book examines the recurrence of specific monster types across time and space (from the French Revolution through anarchist and ethnonational terrorism, until the current wave of jihadist terrorism), and concludes that the terrorist-monster is primarily an unmanageable creature and that this characterization is functional to the pursuit of rational political agendas and to securing popular backing for specific types of rule-breaking behavior in counterterrorism. The second, developed in Part 2, is about why “terrorists” might want to portray and present themselves as monsters. In this regard, it argues that the impersonation of the monster prototype (in its entirety or in some of its components) is a tactic that has been rationally pursued by several groups throughout the history of terrorism, as part of the modus operandi of so-called revolutionary terrorism, primarily for increasing their scare power. Part 3 applies these analytical frameworks to other areas of terrorism studies, including the use of monster metaphors by the “terrorists” themselves to frame their enemies and recent trends in counterterrorism.

Abstract:
A book that helps make sense of the megatrends playing out in the world today and, as a result, how individuals can future-proof their businesses and careers. In the context of work, consider two headlines that we face on a regular basis. Firstly, that the financial reality is few of us can afford to retire and, secondly, that robots and AI are destroying the very jobs we need to make a living. How are these two realities compatible? At the same time, the business landscape is full of hazards, with globalization, technology, talent shortages, changing consumer choices and politics all making it harder to create and maintain success. Competitors seemingly arrive from nowhere overnight, challenging and upending our markets. It is all up in the air, it is all happening at once and it is happening to all of us. From any perspective – personal or corporate – shouldn’t we seek to understand what is happening and prepare ourselves for what is coming next? The World of Work to 2030 is a practical book that addresses these challenges. With a timeline to enable immediate action to be taken, and backed by extensive research, it is aimed at anyone who wants to know how to navigate the commercial and personal uncertainty of the future. The book considers the megatrends playing out in the world today and then through a series of lenses it explains how businesses and individuals can future-proof themselves. Illustrated through a broad range of case studies applied to markets around the world, this is a smart examination of the future of work and how to overcome its challenges.
