Full textPeople are moving around in a greater extent than in the past. This has led to an increased interest among researchers to study communication and organizational culture within organizations and companies. No matter what business and marketing organizations are operating in, the subject has become topical for them to study and reflect on how the whole organization (structure, community members, leadership, etc.) actually works. Our research questions are: How can communication affect the organization's culture; between the leader and the members and the members among themselves? How can leadership communication affect the organizational culture of the company? Main purpose with our paper is to explore various corporate internal communications. As well how this can affect organizational culture and leadership and how they interact with each other. It can contribute to i.e. more knowledge to the organizations who feel that internal communication deficiencies in the organizations different levels. The report can also help the organizations that are not aware of the subject to become aware. Our purpose is as well to gain a deeper understanding of the chosen topic. This means that there is a study that has a qualitative character, which we studied from a hermeneutics approach. It is our intention to get as close to reality as possible. We have placed the various parts of this paper together to get a deep and broad understanding of the chosen field of study. We have chosen to have interviews, specifically semi-structured interviews. We interviewed respondents who have a responsibility (leadership/management role) in similar industries and size (size based on the number of full-time employees) and employees who do not have responsibilities. Internal communications are most optimal when all members of an organization know the channels of communication, culture and the vision and objectives prevails. A close-knit interaction of all these aspects contributes to a strong competitive organization.

Full textThe purpose of this study was to examine the factors that motivate high school students to participate in school band. The relationships between music education, academic success, and social engagement in school were explored. A survey questionnaire and interview questions were used to generate response data from 45 high school band members. Data were gathered, coded, and analyzed using qualitative survey and structured interview design techniques. A systematic approach was used to create a viable narrative that, when added to existing literature, provided a better understanding of the topic for those decision makers struggling to find justifications for how and why band is an important option for high school students. Findings from this study support earlier research and provide a strong case for the claim that many students are intellectually, emotionally, expressively, and musically nurtured by membership in school band. Stress relief was a powerful theme throughout student responses and many students indicated that band was an important place where they were able to build their strongest support relationships. The information acquired from this study provided insight into student perceptions about the value of band participation from environmental, behavioral, and cognitive viewpoints and highlighted the importance of band as a social and emotional support space where students are able to find sanctuary from the stressors of their lives.
Carroll, David Lawson. "The Reciprocal Relationship between Text Literacy and Music Literacy among Beginning Band Students." Thesis, Northern Illinois University, 2018. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10639725.
Full textThis dissertation examines the reciprocal relationship between text literacy and music literacy through an experimental design. Music teachers and English Language Arts (ELA) teachers often address similar components of literacy, including fluency, comprehension, and symbolic interpretation. The theory of cognitive structuralism maintains that through derivative and correlative subsumption, material that is learned in one context is strengthened when applied in a disparate context. Therefore, ELA and music teachers who work in isolation are missing an opportunity to teach parallel literacy concepts for the common advantage of teachers and students. This study seeks to explain how students enrolled in conventional and literacy-enriched band environments perform better than non-band students on text literacy tests. It also asks if conventional band students differ from literacy-enriched band students on text and musical literacy tests.
Fourth-grade students were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a control group (n = 11), a conventionally taught beginning band group (n = 11), and a literacy-enriched beginning band group (n = 10). The experimental treatment included 14 small group band lessons and 14 full band rehearsals. Groups were then compared for textual literacy growth using the NWEA Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) and musical growth using the Watkins Farnum Performance Scale (WFPS). ANCOVA planned contrasts showed that literacy-enriched students significantly outperformed conventional band students and control students on the MAP literature reading subtest. The research design allowed for the defense of literacy-enriched band instruction as a generalizable cause of higher literacy scores.
Additional comparisons between the control group and the two experimental groups revealed no statistically significant differences between the group means on the overall reading scores or the remaining reading subtest scores. The lack of significance suggested that the statistical model was a poor fit for the data. Furthermore, a small sample size and large unexplained variance contributed to a lack of statistical power. Therefore, the application of the cognitive structuralist theory on the remaining MAP reading tests remained inconclusive.
The conventional and literacy-enriched band groups were also compared against each other on text and music literacy growth. There were no statistically significant differences between the conventional group and literacy-enriched group on the MAP or on the WFPS. This suggested that literacy-enriched instruction in band could benefit a student’s textual literacy skills without compromising musical performance goals. It also suggested that more study is needed to determine the extent to which the explicit instruction of ELA reading skills in band may benefit musical ability.
The overall findings implied that literacy-enriched band instruction caused higher textual literacy scores, and the results may be generalized to similar circumstances. Suggestions for practice included increased collaboration among teachers, enhanced teacher pre-service and in-service opportunities, additional use of student-centered progressive instructional strategies, and the careful reconsideration of eliminating or reducing the availability of band to students. Future research would benefit from the quantitative and qualitative models proposed herein.

Full textThe present study examines how the community and cohesion in a youth wind band may appear and is handled both by the orchestra conductor and the participating youth's point of view. The importance of community and cohesion and how it takes its shape are questions that are answered in the study. The data material consists of interviews with different youth groups from the studied youth wind band and an interview with the wind band's conductor. The studied band comes from a town in central Sweden. The result shows that it is important to have an orchestra community and that the community is present and active through both social and musical activities, including trips, camps, coffee breaks, rehearsals and concerts. The wind band has clear musical goals with their activities and both the leader and the youth strive for a good sound and to achieve good musical results. In order to achieve good results the leader emphasizes that community and cohesion is essential for the activities and the musical work to function. The social activities are certainly regarded as important and for many a contributing factor to remain in the wind band, but musicianship is still seen as the most important factor. The results are discussed based on formal and informal activities on the basis of theories of groups and its processes, leadership theories and theories of cohesion.

In today’s society the atmosphere of the workplace looks nothing like what it has in the past. The expectations of both employees and employers has shifted drastically. Companies haveplaced a new emphasis on communication within their organizations in the belief thatcommunication is the key to successful cooperation. Within more and more organizations, agreater level of responsibility is being placed upon managers when it comes to creatingeffective leadership for those employees working under them. Much of the success of theseorganizations is now derived from how well their middle and lower level managers areleading their teams. There are other aspects of the modern business environment that alsoserve to differentiate it from the past. Today’s work requires a greater level of flexibility forboth managers and employees, as well as demanding from all members of organization anincreased ability to work in team-based, cooperative environments. The purpose of thisinvestigation is to understand the relationship between leaders and group members withinbusinesses and the result is analyzed on the basis of organizations from a social psychologybased perspective. This analysis is based upon interviews with personnel managers andemployees working at multiple different children's indoor-playgrounds in three differentcities. The analysis will examine the following aspects: structure of an organisation, leadertypes, flexibility, social bonds, social response respective asocial lack of responsitivity.Robert Kreitner, Michael Allvin, Rolf Granér and Thomas Scheff.

The aim of this thesis is to study how band leaders in a junior high school utilize the ideas of balanced leadership in leading band members, and to propose action strategies which enhance the cohesion of school band members on the basis of study results. The five action strategies combined both technical and symbolical approaches of leadership, which included writing topical notes of concert band, instructing members to program campus lunch concerts, assisting members to form task teams, providing team feedback through open and various signals, and group discussion and exploring activities. As a band leader, the researcher expected to observe the cohesion condition of band members, and the factors that could possibly influence the cohesion of members. After the implementation of action strategies, the researcher also explored the changes in the situation of the band cohesion. The action research process enhanced the band leader’s self-reflection and growth. The participants were concert band members at Hearty Music Junior High School (alias). The research period ran from October 2015 to June 2016. The methods applied to collect information include questionnaires, in-depth interviews, observations, and literature analysis. The major findings of this study are summarized as follows: I. Band members of Hearty Music had had moderate team cohesion before the implementation of action plans. However, there were still some factors which influenced the members’ cohesion waiting to be solved, including person, time, environment, team, and leadership. II. The five action strategies which will enhance the cohesion of band members are developed by integrating balanced leadership principles and team cohesion theory. III. During the study period, the five action strategies positively enhance participants' cohesion. IV. According to the results of conducting action strategies, team members have positive reactions in their entire team cohesion and the other four cohesion factors. And the researcher concluded some study results for future strategies implementing improvements. In the end, suggestions for the further research and future courses of design were made. Based on the research results, specific recommendations are made as a reference for the concert band leaders, authority in schools, parents, and the subsequent researchers.

The aim of this study was to find the relationship between conductors’ characteristic of the wind band and the different leadership styles in junior and elementary schools. A conductor was respected because he or she touched the emotion of explaining the music and the delicate technique. Additionally, the main point that he or she let students show the respect from the deep of part is “leading hearts”. Two questionnaires were designed in this study. First was “the characteristic test questionnaire” based on the dimension of Lai’s personality test. Another was the “leadership style test questionnaire“. I collected 11 conductors of the wind bands in the junior and elementary schools in Taipei City, New Taipei City and Keelung City. I classified two types of characteristics, the conductors type and the average type. There were 9 conductors’ characteristics were classified as “the conductor’s type”, and the other two were “the average type”. The meaning of “the conductor’s type” meets the transformation leadership, from the highest score to the lowest score was "encourage", "personal care", "intelligence stimulate" than "charming". And "personal care" gets higher score than "the work initiates" in Initiate and Consideration, which corresponded the Y theories of management style. The “average type” also matched up transformation leadership as well. The highest score to the lowest score is "encourage", "intelligence stimulate", "charming" and than "personal care". And "the work initiates" gets higher score than "personal care" in Initiate and Consideration, and it may be close to X theories of management style. This study’s contribution lies to expect directors understanding their own personality characteristic, considering the relation between personality characteristic and leading bands, and exhausting them to the transformation leadership of each level, then developing leadership charm becomes a student learning model, it can even promote bands’ effect. I also expect that the education administration organization can value band conductor more, let directors join the education curriculum of leadership curriculum, and increasing departments of band conductor education and leadership. To hold more studies about leader, and build up conductor profession review mechanism with providing schools choosing conductor of reference.

Abstract In Northeast Asia and Asian Pacific region, the Korean Peninsula possesses the crucial strategic position. Especially during recent six months, the tension, igitated by Pyongyang’s possession of nuclear weapon and the aggressive demonstration of force, has pervaded the Peninsula, and imposed the security pressure on the neighboring nations as well. According to the vast differences in North Korea policy between South Korea’s previous and current administrations, the orientation of the policy varies. This thesis, therefore, assumes the differences in policy made by two administrations would be related to the style of the leadership. First, the three variables, which are the Reaction to Political constraints, the Openness to Information, and the Motivation for Action, would be taken from leadership cognitive approach perspective provided by Margaret G. Hermann to analyze and generalize the leadership style of Roh Moo-hyun and Lee Myung-bak. Second, the analysis would be focused on the influences of the leadership style of two leaders on the formulation and the implementation of the North Korea policy, and compare the content of the policy. Finally, the thesis concludes with the finding that the North Korea policy and the degree of the implementation of two leaders would affect the relation between South Korea and Pyongyang, the U.S.A., Japan, China, and Russia as well as the impact on the security of the region. The decisively influence on the formulation of the policy by the cognition of the leadership is found by fllowing the approach; therefore, the analysis acquires the highly explanation on the research of the North Korea policy affected by the individual cognition of Roh Moo-hyun and Lee Myung-bak.

Full textWhat is the scope of Indian participation in Canadian politics? Despite the Canadian governments’ attempts to break traditional Indigenous' political structures by introducing the Band Council system, First Peoples are far from passive victims. The study of interstitial leadership is the theoretical framework of this thesis because it is the key to political practices that take place "in the cracks", thereby conferring marginal power to Indigenous Peoples. By examining the historical and social conditions for the development of the political arena in reserves, it is possible to understand the everyday and contemporaneity of the exercise of power within a highly politicized minority population. The present ethnographic research focuses on the local politics of the Algonquin community of Kitigan Zibi (Quebec). Anishnabeg stakeholder analysis showed a variability of Algonquin political leadership and the existence of different types of leaders in spite of the imposition of a single chief through the Indian Act. The control of the band’s official political affairs by colonial agents, that is to say the missionaries and the Indian agents, has not resulted in the complete control of internal political dynamics and members. The fieldwork revealed that the various political actions undertaken by the Anishnabeg prove to be power strategies from the margin, a form of everyday resistance to the new ways of doing politics established by the Canadian authorities. These actions were also tricks and tactics used to challenge the formal system and the Indian Affairs power. Opposition and resistance however are not the only instruments of Native leadership and politics. In fact, the Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg political leadership is also based on various representations (i.e. traditional, spiritual, and symbolic) that helped preserve Algonquin political identity despite some disruptions and changes introduced into their society by the colonizers. Ambiguities, contradictions and paradoxes found in everyday band politics are not only the result of the meeting of an Other political universe. They are also the culmination of the development and reconstruction of a traditional sociopolitical system and its internal dynamics related to power, a redefinition of the authority and political legitimacy, the rise of a new leaders genre to adequately respond to the demands of the reserve’s political life. Reserve politics are not a concrete ‘thing’ but rather a dynamic that exists within a particular time and in a given place. Additionally, overlapping different cultural and political traditions as well as various forms of authority, occur in various spaces (imposed or symbolic) and institutions (formal and informal). The Algonquin are continually renewing themselves politically within their system. This is not an effect of acculturation, hybridity, and modernity but of tradition. The joining of traditional functions and dynamics to the formal structure represents the beginning of a governance "from below". The latter renews from within, through the establishment of a dialogue, the relationship between Aboriginal leaders and representatives of the State, which provides room for manoeuvre to local protagonists. The Algonquins seized upon the incompatibilities between the two systems - Settler and Aboriginal - to define a new territory "in the cracks" which became their field of action. The analysis of the flexibility of Algonquin leadership, the Euro-Canadien vision of the Native leadership, the instrumental use of State requirements, the contemporary elections and candidates, Algonquin women's empowerment and female leadership within reserve have showed that the interstitial leadership is a political force for the Kitigan Zibi Anishnabeg. By wearing a critical eye on local politics in daily band life and by including Indigenous voices, it is possible to observe the process of decolonization as well as the embryonic forms of postcolonial practices within reserves. This research has shown that the chief and other leaders are at the heart of this political dynamic in the margins and the political development and empowerment of their band.

The purpose of the research is to investigate the relationship between the perception of the wind band members in the elementary schools about the conductor’s leadership and their learning attitude. Questionnaire survey was applied in this research. 470 samples that had participated in the national music contests or the city (county) music contests were selected to finish the questionnaires, and 446 were valid. In this study, statistical analysis, including means, standard deviation, T-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s product-moment correlation and Scheffé’s method were applied to analyze the data. The results of the research are as follow: 1.The perception of the wind band members in elementary schools about the conductors’ leadership and their learning attitude were both good. 2. The members who are in the lower grades, who play the woodwind instruments and who have shorter learning time on the instruments perceived more about the conductors’ leadership than others. 3. The members with different background variation show significant difference about the conductors’ leadership in certain dimensions. (1) The junior conductors’ leadership is better than the senior ones in every dimension. (2) The senior school conductors’ leadership is better than the junior ones in school. (3)The conductors who graduated from the graduate schools show better in the dimensions of “intellectual stimuli”,”individual concern” and “adaptable awards” than those who graduated from the university, not related to the music major. (4) Those from the middle- or big-sized schools in the northern and central Taiwan show better than those from southern Taiwan. 4.The members’ perception about the conductors’ different background variation shows different learning attitude in some dimensions. (1)The senior conductors significantly influence the members’ learning habit and learning skills in the dimension of learning attitude, but not in the dimension of the environmental perception. (2) The members’ learning attitude in the schools with senior school conductors shows better than the other groups. But it shows no difference in learning motivation and the environmental perception with different years of service. (3) The members whose conductors were graduated from the non music-related graduate schools have better learning skills in the dimension of learning attitude than those whose conductors were graduated from the music-related undergraduate schools. (4) Those from the middle- or big-sized schools in the northern and central Taiwan show better than those from southern Taiwan. 5. The perception of the wind band members in the elementary schools about the conductor’s leadership shows positive correlation with the members’ learning attitude. Finally, suggestions were proposed to the band conductors, the band administrators and for further researches based the results of the study.
