Belser, Julia Watts. Postlude—Theology in the Flames. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190600471.003.0008.

Full text
Abstract:
The postlude sheds light on rabbinic theological responses to destruction, arguing that Bavli Gittin’s stories portray God as passionately—even catastrophically—responsive to human need. It examines shared resonances between Bavli Gittin’s portrayal of the destruction and the well-known rabbinic story of the Oven of Akhnai (Bavli Baba Metsia 59b), which recounts the cataclysmic disaster provoked by the tears of the humiliated Rabbi Eliezer. Similarly, Bavli Gittin claims that God destroys the temple in response to the humiliation of Bar Qamtsa, and that Israel’s doom was sealed after another wronged man weeps. Rather than emphasizing sin and punishment, Bavli Gittin’s stories highlight God’s immense self-sacrificial empathy for victims of shame, sexual violation, and economic exploitation. These tales of destruction reveal the devastating power of divine empathy, suggesting that God’s tremendous responsivity to suffering can shatter the world in the wake of one man’s pain.

Lindsay, David. Scientific Writing = Thinking in Words. CSIRO Publishing, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486311484.

Full text
Abstract:
Telling people about research is just as important as doing it. But many competent researchers are wary of scientific writing, despite its importance for sharpening scientific thinking, advancing their career, obtaining funding for their work and growing the prestige of their institution. This second edition of David Lindsay’s popular book Scientific Writing = Thinking in Words presents a way of thinking about writing that builds on the way good scientists think about research. The simple principles in this book will help you to clarify the objectives of your work and present your results with impact. Fully updated throughout, with practical examples of good and bad writing, an expanded chapter on writing for non-scientists and a new chapter on writing grant applications, this book makes communicating research easier and encourages researchers to write confidently. It is an ideal reference for researchers preparing journal articles, posters, conference presentations, reviews and popular articles; for students preparing theses; and for researchers whose first language is not English.

Abstract:
This book is the real story of how George W. Bush came to double-down on Iraq in the highest stakes gamble of his entire presidency. It offers an unprecedented look into the process by which Bush overruled much of the military leadership and many of his trusted advisors to authorize the deployment of roughly 30,000 additional troops to the warzone in a bid to save Iraq from collapse in 2007. The adoption of a new counterinsurgency strategy and surge of new troops into Iraq altered the American posture in the Middle East for a decade to come. The book provides access to the deliberations among the decision-makers on Bush's national security team as they embarked on that course. In their own words, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Stephen Hadley, Condoleezza Rice, Joshua Bolten, Robert Gates, and others, recount the debates and disputes that informed the process as Bush weighed the historical lessons of Vietnam against the perceived strategic imperatives in the Middle East. For a president who had earlier vowed never to dictate military strategy to generals, the deliberations in the Oval Office and Situation Room in 2006 constituted a trying and fateful moment. Bush risked losing public esteem and courted political ruin by refusing to disengage from the costly war in Iraq. The book is a portrait of leadership in the Bush White House. The personal perspectives are complemented by critical assessments. Taken together, they are a first draft of the history of the surge and new chapter in the history of the American presidency.

Abstract:
Between 1926 and 1933, the Empire Marketing Board used a myriad of advertisements, posters, exhibits, and films to promote the empire's food products to British homes. The publicity campaigns were intended to show that tea from India or fruit from Australia was not foreign, but also British. Whether the Board was successful in its bid to promote intra-imperial food consumption, indeed, whether those efforts were needed in the first place, was not clear. This article focuses on foods from Asia and America that were originally thought to be exotic in Europe, initially served as indicators of elite status, and their gradual dissemination downwards. It also examines the role of long-distance trade and modern technologies in the production and distribution of new agro-industrial foods across networks of imperial knowledge and commodity circulation. The article concludes by assessing the impact of global food corporations' domination in the contemporary era, which in many ways can be seen as the equivalent of the European and American empire of the past.
