Abstract:
Findings from two studies on the design of digital badges for a middle school geometry game and their impact on motivational and cognitive learning outcomes are reported. Study 1 compared the effect of badges in the game to a group with no badges. Badges did not increase posttest performance for all. Learners with high situational interest performed better with badges, learners with low situational interest performed worse with badges. Study 2 compared mastery goal orientation badges with performance goal orientation badges. The interaction of condition and situational interest from Study 1 was replicated. Furthermore, students receiving performance badges performed better on the posttest than students in the mastery badges condition; the no-badges condition was not different from either of the other conditions. Results suggest badges do not always help in educational video games: Types of badges interact with students' interest and motivation to affect learning outcomes.

Abstract:
Introduction: Many nursing and midwifery schools in many countries around the world awarded or still award graduation badges or pins to their graduates. All graduates from different parts of the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia and later the Republic of Yugoslavia educated in Slovenian healthcare schools received badges from these schools. Some of the graduates later employed in medical institutions across former Yugoslavia wore these badges on their uniforms. The main purpose of this historical research was to establish which Slovenian health care schools awarded the graduation badges and what they looked like. It was also investigated why the badges ceased to be awarded and what motivated Angela Boškin Faculty of Health Care in Jesenice to reintroduce awarding the badges. Methods: Due to a lack of written sources, we conducted 393 face to face and telephonic interviews with former badge recipients across Slovenia. Their existing badges were photographed. On the authors’ initiative, a private collection of badges was started. Results: It has been established that in the 20th century all Slovenian secondary health schools awarded badges. The Nursing College, Ljubljana also awarded graduation badges. Five different types of badges in many variants were issued. The first badges were awarded to graduates by Slovenian oldest Nursing School, Ljubljana in 1925. The badges ceased to be awarded in the late 1970s and the early 1980s. Some questions about probable reasons for cessation of awarding badges remain unanswered. Less than a fifth of interviewees kept their badges. Graduating nursing badges were reintroduced in Slovenia in 2017 with a new badge which is presented and depicted in this article. The motivation for the reintroduction of graduating badges is also investigated.Discussion and conclusion: Unfortunately, many Slovenian nurses and midwives are not sufficiently aware of the meaning and importance of their badges. Although badges are important for professional image and identity of nurses, badges as a symbol of nursing have become almost completely forgotten. Graduation badges are miniature works of art and are proof of the existence and development of Slovenian healthcare schools. Nursing badges present a part of nursing history as well as being our cultural heritage. The badges deserve to be written and talked about and should be displayed in a planned future Slovenian Health Care Museum.

Abstract:
The presence of heavy metals in the environment due to industrial activities is of serious concern because of their toxic behaviour towards humans and other forms of life. Biosorption of Pb(II) using dry bacterial biomass of Bacillus badius AK, previously isolated from water hyacinth compost, has been undertaken in batch system. The optimum conditions of biosorption were determined by investigating the initial pH, contact time, initial biomass dosage at constant temperature of 40 °C, initial metal concentration of 100 mg/L and rotational speed of 150 rpm. The optimum pH was found to be 5 and equilibrium contact time was 2.5 h. The maximum biosorption capacity of Pb(II) on Bacillus badius AK was 138.8 mg/g at an initial concentration of 100 mg/L. A kinetics study revealed that the adsorption process followed pseudo second order rate kinetics. The experimental data were fitted to the Langmuir isotherm. Characterization of the biomass indicated the presence of several functional groups. The results indicated that the bacterium Bacillus badius AK is efficient for the removal of Pb(II).

Abstract:
A new kind of bath house in Västertorp, situated in the forgotten Mellanbergsparken contaminated by noise and dust from the freeway, where people can go swimming. There is no need for more indoor swimming pools in Stockholm, but a new kind of bath house, where different people of all different ages can go to bathe, swim and relax in a strongly architectural environment is missing. Therefore my focus has been to create powerful spaces where the water is in focus and enhances the architectural experience of the room. Through the bath house there is a scale that evolves from the site: from asphalt to forest, from enclosed to open. From the bath house entrance you get a glimpse through the inner court yard, towards the 24 by 84 meter colonnade hall for swimming. Here brick columns meet the water surface that stretches through the entire hall unbroken and reflects the ceiling made up of load bearing brick lierne vaults. In the bath hall is a loop for swimming and on the sides the water is only ankle-deep. From the loop you can swim out under a colonnade that shades the pool. Finally you meet the forest on the other side and the noise and smell of the freeway is far away and forgotten.

Abstract:
Public Bath – The Industrial Landscape in Norrköping   Norrköping is in need of a new public bath. In the centre of the city, along Motala ström, the industrial landscape is located. This area hosts cultural and scientific activities but has a long history of textile industry. The new public bath is located in this area on an existing water power plant. The aim of the project is to maintain the contrasty soul, enhance the spaces and potential venues that already exist and give Norrköping a possibility for wellness and exercising. The goal is to show how a new building adjusts and relates to the site specific and historical context. The building is shaped as a rectangle rising from the slope. It activates existing qualities such as the old stone stairs in the west. The north side of the building aims to receive and end the grid city in scale and expression. The south side with the long façade defines the river space. The interior faces the river and creates openness towards the south. Thereby the industrial landscape becomes part of the building. The swimming pools are located on the entrance floor and the surfaces of the water are visually linked to the river. The changing rooms, the power plant and the physiotherapy are placed in the basement.

Abstract:
Umeå municipality have, since 1995, at varying intensity, been planning for a new bath house to replace the existing from 1970. The current proposal has been met with mixed critique and the more critical ones fokus on both the placement (in the city centre on a too narrow lot) and the extent of the programme (too small). Since I share these critical opinions it has given me an excellent opportunity for this thesis work to examine the placement, extent and figuration of a new bath house in Umeå.

Abstract:
Rönnebadet- new aquatic center in Ängelholm FUNCTIONS How to portray an aquatic center that will serve both as play, exercise and contemplation? The aquatic center shall promote fun and adventure, but also be a place for sport and competition whilst allowing room for contemplation and rest. The different functions have different tempos and different sounds, so how do you combine these features? They require proximity and not the least visual contact, but also privacy. CONTEXT How does one perceive the building from the city? There is a lack of a good connection to the site therefore new links are needed. How should the building best take advantage of the space at the riverside without taking up too much of this space? The site has a sensitive situation with hundred year old oak trees and direct proximity to the riverbank. DESIGN The building is made up of three volumes with a common intersection. The volumes interact with each other but also create three rooms with distinct characters. The aquatic center is a "house in the park" with a fine wood raster as exterior material. The volumes are broken up to reduce the size of the building and also to save important trees. Towards Rönne å the building meets up with its smallest volume, which helps maintain the existing green structure at the riverside. Material for this study is taken from workplace projects.

Abstract:
Bath has been a part of human history for a long time. Today bathing/swimming in municipal pools is for people of all ages and it is possible to take swimming courses, exercise or enjoy recreation. The municipal indoor pool of Hogdalen in Sweden was build in the sixties and has had problems with high levels of heterotrophic bacteria. The facility has two larger pools, one adventure park for young kids, two smaller bath tubs and a jacuzzi. To improve water quality UV light and coal filter were installed in October 2009 to the already existing purification system. The water purification starts with a mechanical grid followed by flocculation and then through a sand filter before pH adjustment and chlorine. To adjust water levels in the pools drinking water is added when needed. Chlorine is a common and effective disinfectant but are also known to react with organic material and form disinfection by products (DBP) which decreases the disinfection level and could be a health problem. The goal of this essay is to evaluate the technology that was installed in October 2009. Investigations of laboratory data, comparing data before and after with a one way anova test, do not show a significant improvement of heterotrophic bacteria and free chlorine but TOC, DBP and total chlorine have improved significantly. The conclusion is that UV-light and coal filter effectively decreased levels of DBP and TOC in the pool water of Hogdalen. High levels of heterotrophic bacteria before October 2009 was a result of free chlorine forming chlorinated byproducts with organic material which led to low levels of free chlorine. After October 2009 the level of free chlorine was not high enough to disinfect the water properly because of adjustment problems to new technology. Total chlorine levels have decreased after October 2009 which makes it possible to add more chlorine. Although heterotrophic bacteria did not decrease as expected the improvement of DBP levels decreases health risks for both swimmers and employees staying in the pool area.

Abstract:
My suggestion to the new bathhouse in Västertorp, Stockholm, is to partly bury it in the park to give the park the possibility to continue to be a place where pedestrians and bikers can continue to pass by the park without being stopped and irritated by a building. Even though it is partly buried, it connects with a path, which is important today in this area, to combine the beginning of the park with the connecting Telefonplan. The volumes, which rise from the park, create spaces to hang out in, and makes people want to know what is in there. The building embodies two big halls for sports, together with changing rooms and a smaller hall for a gym. The bathhouse features a 25-meter swimming pool for training and competitions, a pool for education, and one for slower exercise swimming. There are also a section for spa and sauna. The existing outdoor pool is connected with a wooden deck from the new building, and it contains the new changing rooms for the outdoor pool.   The three pools inside the new building under the park have double ceiling height above the pools. For a visitor the wish is to get them to recognize the volumes from outside to reflect on where they are located on the roof. These volumes also have glass in the roof, which leads the daylight in the spaces where the pools are located.

Abstract:
Every year new premises are built in Sweden, and even if they are made as energy efficient as possible, this will not reduce the energy demands, but the rate of the increase of the energy use will be reduced. One type of facility in Sweden that is a major energy user is public baths, and this makes public baths an interesting facility to study more closely. There are around 500 public baths in Sweden and about 75 % of those can be seen as older baths with large need of renovation, and they all require a high level of energy efficiency measures. To show how the energy demand increase or decrease depending on the changes chosen to be made, the simulation application IDA Indoor Climate and Energy was used. Simulations were made and compared for several cases, with two extreme cases as starting points. The cases were older and newer ventilation systems, with and without return air flow, older and newer building envelopes and how the indoor climate and the energy demand is affected by the swimming pool covered or not covered during the night. The biggest difference in heat demand was found to be in the two extreme cases, and the use of recirculated air has the highest impact.

Abstract:
Västertorp, just another faceless suburb to Stockholm, in big need of new sports halls and indoor swimming facilities, and maybe in even bigger need of some WOW-factor. How do you achieve this without straying from a quite strict program? My starting point was to focus on functionality and thereafter, when a functioning swimming and sports facility had been drawn up, try to find architectural qualities I could enhance. I must admit that this was kind of an emergency solution after having strayed in the Middle Ages for the first half of the project, pursuing the nonsensical idea of a bath castle. Apart from functionality symmetry was an important part of the project, as well as realism and the end-result resembles something that Santiago Calatrava and Albert Speer might have created together with a functionalist. Hydropolis has no windows, to totally shield itself from the outer world and its next door neighbour the E4, but it's covered by a glass roof so that those with a backstroke disposition have a beautiful view where the sky sneaks a peek between streamlined, polished concrete beams.

Abstract:
This chapter, by way of introduction, explores the life and work of Badius, drawing on judgements by his contemporaries and posterity. It introduces Badius via perspectives on the various roles he played throughout his career in the learned culture of the Renaissance: poet, schoolmaster, commentator, editor, scholar-printer. His biography is presented in the context of the groups and networks with which he identified, both secular humanist and religious, in the Low Countries, Italy, Germany, England and France. Educated by the Ghent Common Life Brethren, in the early part of his career he worked in Lyon for the press of Johann Trechsel, and belonged to a group of northern European humanists who circulated and published devotional poetry. He became known as an editor, grammarian and writer of commentaries, and established his own press in 1503 in Paris, where he associated with the best known humanist scholars of the day: Robert Gaguin, Lefèvre d’Etaples, Guillaume Budé, Erasmus.

Abstract:
This chapter broaches the question of Badius’s self-presentation. Badius as a writer was a producer of ‘secondary’ works – commentaries, ‘epitomes’, supplements, compilations, dedicatory epistles. The language of authorial presence and appropriation associated with Renaissance writers like Erasmus is in direct contrast with the language of Badius’s paratext, which tends always in the opposite direction of self-abnegation and disavowal of ownership. His self-presentation is here read in the context of changing concepts of authorship during the period in which he was active, and is framed in terms of the rhetorical construction of ethos in his dedications and prefaces, his engagements with northern Christian humanism, and the demands of patronage.

Abstract:
Engineering organizations around the word are increasingly becoming team-based due to a teams’ ability to generate solutions to complex problems. This is thought to be attributed to the “wisdom of the collectives” where teams outperform the sum of their individual members. Despite heavy emphasis of teamwork in engineering design, our understanding of how to cultivate teamwork skills is poorly understood. This is due in part to the fact that research on engineering design teams is often based on ‘snap-shot’ ethnographic methods that do not account for the dynamic changes that happen over the course of a project. Research that does account for these interactions are hindered by the human processing required to code and analyze the immense amounts of video data acquired through team studies. Recent technological advances in the way of sociometric badges provide a potential avenue to explore intricate communication patterns and help researchers identify when and how team interventions should be developed. However, these technologies have not been validated for use in the dynamic context of engineering design teams. Thus, the current study was developed to examine sociometric badges for their accuracy, precision, and ability to determine speech dominance in engineering design teams. Our results show that sociometric badges can accurately capture total speaking time. However, the results also show that environmental conditions can impact their accuracy. In addition, we found that sociometric badges did not capture speech precisely and often overestimated when a team member was speaking. These results support the use of sociometric badges for capturing high level team interactions (e.g. participation and total speaking time) in engineering design research.
