Full textA new kind of bath house in Västertorp, situated in the forgotten Mellanbergsparken contaminated by noise and dust from the freeway, where people can go swimming. There is no need for more indoor swimming pools in Stockholm, but a new kind of bath house, where different people of all different ages can go to bathe, swim and relax in a strongly architectural environment is missing. Therefore my focus has been to create powerful spaces where the water is in focus and enhances the architectural experience of the room. Through the bath house there is a scale that evolves from the site: from asphalt to forest, from enclosed to open. From the bath house entrance you get a glimpse through the inner court yard, towards the 24 by 84 meter colonnade hall for swimming. Here brick columns meet the water surface that stretches through the entire hall unbroken and reflects the ceiling made up of load bearing brick lierne vaults. In the bath hall is a loop for swimming and on the sides the water is only ankle-deep. From the loop you can swim out under a colonnade that shades the pool. Finally you meet the forest on the other side and the noise and smell of the freeway is far away and forgotten.

Full textPublic Bath – The Industrial Landscape in Norrköping Norrköping is in need of a new public bath. In the centre of the city, along Motala ström, the industrial landscape is located. This area hosts cultural and scientific activities but has a long history of textile industry. The new public bath is located in this area on an existing water power plant. The aim of the project is to maintain the contrasty soul, enhance the spaces and potential venues that already exist and give Norrköping a possibility for wellness and exercising. The goal is to show how a new building adjusts and relates to the site specific and historical context. The building is shaped as a rectangle rising from the slope. It activates existing qualities such as the old stone stairs in the west. The north side of the building aims to receive and end the grid city in scale and expression. The south side with the long façade defines the river space. The interior faces the river and creates openness towards the south. Thereby the industrial landscape becomes part of the building. The swimming pools are located on the entrance floor and the surfaces of the water are visually linked to the river. The changing rooms, the power plant and the physiotherapy are placed in the basement.

Full textUmeå municipality have, since 1995, at varying intensity, been planning for a new bath house to replace the existing from 1970. The current proposal has been met with mixed critique and the more critical ones fokus on both the placement (in the city centre on a too narrow lot) and the extent of the programme (too small). Since I share these critical opinions it has given me an excellent opportunity for this thesis work to examine the placement, extent and figuration of a new bath house in Umeå.

Full textRönnebadet- new aquatic center in Ängelholm FUNCTIONS How to portray an aquatic center that will serve both as play, exercise and contemplation? The aquatic center shall promote fun and adventure, but also be a place for sport and competition whilst allowing room for contemplation and rest. The different functions have different tempos and different sounds, so how do you combine these features? They require proximity and not the least visual contact, but also privacy. CONTEXT How does one perceive the building from the city? There is a lack of a good connection to the site therefore new links are needed. How should the building best take advantage of the space at the riverside without taking up too much of this space? The site has a sensitive situation with hundred year old oak trees and direct proximity to the riverbank. DESIGN The building is made up of three volumes with a common intersection. The volumes interact with each other but also create three rooms with distinct characters. The aquatic center is a "house in the park" with a fine wood raster as exterior material. The volumes are broken up to reduce the size of the building and also to save important trees. Towards Rönne å the building meets up with its smallest volume, which helps maintain the existing green structure at the riverside. Material for this study is taken from workplace projects.

Full textMy suggestion to the new bathhouse in Västertorp, Stockholm, is to partly bury it in the park to give the park the possibility to continue to be a place where pedestrians and bikers can continue to pass by the park without being stopped and irritated by a building. Even though it is partly buried, it connects with a path, which is important today in this area, to combine the beginning of the park with the connecting Telefonplan. The volumes, which rise from the park, create spaces to hang out in, and makes people want to know what is in there. The building embodies two big halls for sports, together with changing rooms and a smaller hall for a gym. The bathhouse features a 25-meter swimming pool for training and competitions, a pool for education, and one for slower exercise swimming. There are also a section for spa and sauna. The existing outdoor pool is connected with a wooden deck from the new building, and it contains the new changing rooms for the outdoor pool. The three pools inside the new building under the park have double ceiling height above the pools. For a visitor the wish is to get them to recognize the volumes from outside to reflect on where they are located on the roof. These volumes also have glass in the roof, which leads the daylight in the spaces where the pools are located.

Full textVästertorp, just another faceless suburb to Stockholm, in big need of new sports halls and indoor swimming facilities, and maybe in even bigger need of some WOW-factor. How do you achieve this without straying from a quite strict program? My starting point was to focus on functionality and thereafter, when a functioning swimming and sports facility had been drawn up, try to find architectural qualities I could enhance. I must admit that this was kind of an emergency solution after having strayed in the Middle Ages for the first half of the project, pursuing the nonsensical idea of a bath castle. Apart from functionality symmetry was an important part of the project, as well as realism and the end-result resembles something that Santiago Calatrava and Albert Speer might have created together with a functionalist. Hydropolis has no windows, to totally shield itself from the outer world and its next door neighbour the E4, but it's covered by a glass roof so that those with a backstroke disposition have a beautiful view where the sky sneaks a peek between streamlined, polished concrete beams.

The project deals in part with the facility's location och role in its context – in relation to to the existing local suburban center at Hägerstensåsen with its time typical form and structure. In relation to the park environment of Mellanbergsparken and its functions and also the park environment in a larger context. Full textUnit and Unity By: Marcelo Rovira Torres Where does one begin when a bathhouse is in the works? Where did bathhouses originate? Perhaps it was by the sea, when the autumn chill made the water unbearable and people searched for a place where they could swim no matter the climate. Three bathing houses in three Swedish cities, Gothenburg, Malmö and Luleå built during ‘Folkhemsbygget’ in the first half of the 20th century were analysed. There, it was clear that the main focus lay on exercise and the swimming pool for aquatic sports was the buildings undeniable centerpiece. The sauna and ablution seem to have a secondary role, but the function is just as important. This project is about distilling the meeting between the bathhouse’s two main functions, exercise and ablution, to peel away all the excess and find architecture that comes as close to the buildings core as possible.

Full textAmid the border between the districts Västertorp and Hägerstensåsen in Stockholm is the elongated park "Mellanbergsparken" situated. In the northern short end of the park you find Hägerstensåsen subway station and in the southern end is the highly trafficked freeway E4. The park is a flat landscape with few trees so the loud noise from the E4 is much disturbing. In the southern end is an outdoor swimming pool that is frequented hot summer days, but the presence of the motorway can't be ignore, so the experience of bathing will not be quite as relaxing as desired. The Park Bathhouse in Västertorp is supposed to be located in the southwest corner and then acts as noise protection against the motorway. The highest parts of the building are closest to the freeway for as much noise reduction as possible, and also to minimize shading of the park and outdoor bath. The entire building is additionally covered with a trellis system where vines can wriggle, and they, together with the forest planted on the land between the building and the highway, further contributes to noise reduction as well as air purification from all exhaust. The entrance to the park bathhouse and its associated sports halls are situated in a pedestrian tunnel that goes through the building from the existing underpass under Personnevägen. For understanding of the building's function there will be windows that go in to the deep diving pool. The swimming pool hall is composed of three volumes that have different height and level the floors, creating several types of spatial features within a single room. Between the three components is also high pillars with metal rods between which stabilizes the large hall. Along these wriggle vines that take the park experience indoors. In the smallest volume, devoted mainly to children, there are large trees planted, creating new rooms between them while improving air quality.

Full textMany of Sweden's public indoor swimming pools built in the late 1900’s are beginning to show signs of excessive moisture damage due to extreme indoor climate. This report explains the general problem of high moisture-loaded buildings and involves the moisture-damaged public indoor swimming pool Aquarena in Katrineholm. Extreme care is required when assembling the moisture barrier in a structure, especially with high internal moisture content. Optimal placement of the moisture barrier in the warmer parts of the construction means that moisture is never allowed to condense, thus minimizing the risk of moisture damage and negative consequences. Reality also shows that if risks of moisture and moisture damages are assessed early in the planning process, amounts in the range of hundreds of thousands of Swedish crowns can be saved. Calculations of moisture transport have been made for the previous exterior wall structure (the one that suffered damage) and new exterior wall structure the (new design for the reconstruction) using the computer program WUFI Pro 4.2 and analyzed in WUFI Bio 3.0. Calculations show that the old exterior wall structure in Aquarena would have been able to withstand moisture damage and damages due to moisture if joints and transitions in the moisture barrier had been correctly performed. Calculations have not proven that all elements of the newly built wall design will work perfectly. The main reason for uncertainty in calculations when using WUFI is that the calculation model is not fully developed. Uncertainty is also due to insufficient knowledge of properties of the simulated materials. However, calculations show unambiguously better results than the previous wall construction. It is therefore necessary to further investigate what values of humidity and temperature will exist over the next few years to be able to later on correct the calculation model after reality.

Full textIn a construction project to build 190 apartments ordered by Väsbyhem and built by Midroc Project Management (MPM) the decision to use Webers Leca bricks for the bathroom instead of gypsum wallboard was taken. This comparison shows on the benefits from this decision but also presents some of the disadvantages. A shorted building time could outweigh the increased costs of bricking the walls. Several incitemen is presented and backed up with calculations and descriptions to make this decision. The choice to brick the walls opens a possibility to make money for the orderer as for Midroc. Extra work in the planning process and production management is minor to the positive effects.

Full textShortage of bathroom storage is a common issue, especially for families with children or other large households. People experience that it can easily get crowded with a lot of hygiene products, often resulting in many products standing on the floor. To address this problem, one could buy traditional shelves, but it can be problematic to install a shelf inside a bathroom. There are many complications that arise with making holes in bathroom walls, and consumers are advised to avoid this due to the risk of water damage. Consumers then choose to buy reversible storage solutions such as baskets that are hung in the shower or attached with suction cups to the walls. These products offer relatively small storage space and can be perceived as a compromise in the absence of better solutions. This project was initiated with market research and a user survey. A gap on the market was identified for a reversible storage solution offering a lot of storage space and still being stylish. Three concepts were developed that are mounted between two close-spaced walls, where one concept was chosen to further develop. This project resulted in the concept FreeClimb, which is a double scissor mechanism combined with an adjustable shelf. The width of the shelf is automatically adjusted to the space between the walls during installation. This is possible through a telescope mechanism connected to the movement of the scissors. To achieve high friction and not make any marks in the walls the contact surface is covered in silicone rubber. The structure is stuck between the walls thanks to geometric locking from the scissor mechanism combined with the friction. The more load is applied on the shelf, the more stable it gets. The concept radiates a sense of stability and fits perfectly into the modern home, while not making any deformations on the walls.

Full textThis report deals with prefabricated bathrooms and the advantage, during the production process, they have compared to ordinary produced bathrooms.
The work is done together with the building company JM. The common task is to investigate if the manufactures, in spite of standardized design can meet the concept of JM, i.e. high flexibility and adjustment towards the customer. In JM they are doubtful to the method, as they did not yet worked with prefabricated modules and think that the choises for the costumer will be limited.
There will be a short resume of the progress of the bathrooms and its importance as sanitary and wellbeing.
The recent problems with damage caused by damp in bathrooms. Have resultade in regulations. These rules, will be briefly reported.
There will also be a short review of some interviews with persons who have experience of prefabricated bathrooms.
Different manufacturing methods will be reviewed and how different modules will be installed in to the houses.
Concerning the economy we have accepted the figures of the manufactures.
Prefabricated building is a method to shorten the production time on the working site. It will be done through manufactoring buildingblocks in factories. The blocks could be simple beams or complete modules. Therer is a great deal of advantages for instance the productions will not be depending of the weather.
The quality will also be more uniform, since each part is produced independent of earlier parts.
We have learned about the planning process, construction and installing and we think that not only JM but also other building companies could have a lot to win in this way of building
The problems we have noticed are:
• Very accurate planning is required from the contractors
• The transporting factors restrict the flexibility and the size of the modules
• The modules take more space than the ordinary way to build
• The modules required depression in the ground beam layer in the area where it should be placed. This will be calculated for during the constructing period.

Full textStockholm City needs to expand the capacity of their public baths and sports facilities. In addition, the renovation need is great for all bathhouses. The popular bath in Västertorp covers a large area but needs to be demolished due to its poor condition. Instead appartments will be built on the site and the bath will move to the southern tip of the park Mellanbergsparken to become a noise barrier between the highway (E4/E20) and the park that the city wants to start programming. The new bathhouse will be a nice end to the park and will also include two full-sized sport halls, fitness center and group training rooms hence the name "Sports Center". The sports center is thus divided into three volumes, consisting of the sport halls, a fitness part and the bath-house. The location of the center will have an increased availability through the highway and thus avoiding burdening the area's existing traffic. I have designed a new roundabout that will solve today's difficult traffic situation and reduce speed in the neighborhood. There are also two new bus stops in both directions. The site's existing swimming-pool should not be integrated into the plan as it is only used for three months during the year and should continue to remain with free entrance. Otherwise, the proposal is based on guidelines from the Sport Management department of the municipality. The function of the program has been shaping the outer volume. Analyses from the area has defined the project and the concept of the mesh facade is to represent water and speed. The facade has four basic ideas: to provide an exciting internal play of light, protect from the sun's direct rays, absorb the noise and become a spectacle for the cars on the highway day and night. The focus was to solve the program logistically while getting exciting aesthetic solutions in materials and light. In addition, there are solutions to how the bath house can be kept clean through easy design methods. The challenge was to fit all the functions on the relatively small plot. The project has been an exercise in new programs on how to project architecture, and logging the work process.

Full textIn the valley between Västertorp and Hägerstensåsen in southern Stockholm you will find Mellanbergsparken. It is an elongated nature area with large natural variations in topography and landscape. The area is dominated by a tall and steep ridge, which runs along the park's northern side. The park's eastern part is bordered by the highly busy E4, which cuts right through the landscape creating a disturbing traffic barrier. Mellanbergsparken is a well-used park by the inhabitants of Hägersten. It works both as a recreational area, activity area and as commuter routes between the various districts. Today, most of the surface is undeveloped, and is aside from the football fields, mini golf course, outdoor swimmning pool and preschool almost untouched. A few dwellings have been built next to the metro station in Hägerstensåsen, which can be seen as an indication of future plans to develop the area. Västertorp's current swimming center, which is incorporated in the residential area, is timeworn and needs to be demolished. A new combined swimming and sports center will be built, which is planned to receive visitors from all the Hägersten area. Suggested location is the southeastern part of the park, next to the E4. The intention is to let the new sports and swimming center serve as a noise-canceling protection from the expressway since it is believed that a silencing can add value to the nature area. With my project I am strongly questioning the reasons for the sports and swimming center's placement and the benefit of allowing the building to act against noise. Instead, I am focusing on the interaction between building and park and what happens if one chooses to include urban elements - such as disturbing expressways - instead of cutting them off.

To satisfy the needs identified in the initial development phase a specific design process model was developed that originates from Ullman´s “The Mechanical Design Process” and Landqvist’s “Vilda idéer och djuplodande analys”. The realization of the project was performed in four parts; problem analysis phase, idea generation phase, realization phase and resulting phase.
In the design process it was included to carry out a thorough analysis of functionality, characteristics and design the bathroom cabinet should represent. Moreover, choice of material, construction details and lighting were other aspects of great importance for the mirror cabinet’s performance.
A great range of tools were used with the purpose of reaching understanding of the product, the industry and the design process. Through quantitative interviews with the target group and the staff at Hafa, benchmarking and trend analysis, valuable information was gathered considering the preferred characteristics and design of a bathroom cabinet.
The project resulted in a mirror cabinet representing innovative design, offering both open and concealed storage. The design differs from the competition, however represents the core values of Hafa, quality and elegance to reasonable price.

We present the design, implementation and deployment of a wearable computing research platform for measuring and analyzing human behavior in a variety of settings and applications. We propose the use of wearable sociometric badges capable of automatically measuring the amount of face-to-face interaction, conversational time, physical proximity to other people, and physical activity levels using social signals derived from vocal features, body motion, and relative location to capture individual and collective patterns of behavior. Our goal is to be able to understand how patterns of behavior shape individuals and organizations. We attempt to use on-body sensors in large groups of people for extended periods of time in naturalistic settings for the purpose of identifying, measuring, and quantifying social interactions, information flow, and organizational dynamics. We deployed this research platform in a group of 22 employees working in a real organization over a period of one month. Using these automatic measurements we were able to predict employees' self-assessment of productivity, job satisfaction, and their own perception of group interaction quality. An initial exploratory data analysis indicates that it is possible to automatically capture patterns of behavior using this wearable platform.

Full textToday it is not only through traditional education that skills can be acquired. Skills can also be gained through the internet as well as at physical locations other than academic institutions. However there is currently no universally accepted way to display this informal knowledge. To solve this problem the American organization Mozilla Foundation, who created the web browser “Mozilla Firefox”, has created “Open Badges”. An Open Badge is a type of achievement that, in contrast to other achievements, contains metadata which enables verification of the issuer, the steps needed to receive the Badge and information about who received the badge etc. Through this essay we intend to find out if and why this kind of reward motivates students to complete an online course about environmental awareness. To investigate this we created a homepage containing an online course with a mission based structure. Two different groups with ten members each had the choice to complete the course. In one of the groups the participants were informed about Open Badges and how it works (the “Open Badges group”). The participants in the other group did not get this information (the “control group”). After the online course’s deadline was due we held a focus group meeting to discuss Open Badges. We found that in the Open Badges group two out of ten students completed the course. Zero out of ten students in the control group completed the course. At the focus group meeting the two students who completed the course explained that Open Badges explicitly motivated them to complete the missions in the online course which they thought were strenuous. All of the students in the focus group argued that for Open Badges to work, it needs to be adopted by the labor market. Since the students who completed the course were in the Open Badges-group, the results lean toward showing that Open Badges in fact work as a motivational source. This claim is also supported by the fact that the students in the focus group completed some missions just because they were motivated by the Open Badge, even though they considered these missions hard or strenuous. The participants who completed the course believed Open Badges gave them motivation because it felt like a final goal. They also thought it was exciting and interesting. Additionally, they saw potential in Open Badges in general, not only for the Badge they received, as a merit on the labor market. All participants saw ways of using Open Badges both online (outside of traditional educational institutions) and offline (at traditional educational institutions). They thought that Open Badges could be used online in order to show what you have learned on your own, and offline to reward exemplary work, for example a Badge for the best course result in a specific course.

Full textWith improvements in power harvesting transducers' power density, and power reduction in communication transceiver systems, displays, sensors and energy-aware microprocessors, smart wireless network nodes are becoming ubiquitous throughout our daily life. Digital signage has gained popularity with the integration of smart wireless network nodes into the application space replacing traditional signage and badges. Primary battery sources traditionally supply energy for digital signage, however, that generates waste and maintenance costs that are counterproductive to using digital signage. Therefore, a digital signage prototype called the wireless display sensor node (WDSN) with a micro-power photovoltaic energy harvesting system was developed at UC Davis and is presented as an alternative in this work. The WDSN and node management system is comprised of an electrophoretic display, Wi-Fi radio, photovoltaic and vibration power transducers, internet connected management system, sensors and power harvesting power electronics. A holistic energy approach was used to drive the development of the proposed digital badge and signage. This approach encompasses the characterization of vibrational and photovoltaic energy sources, analyzing the energy requirement from typical digital signage and developing a power harvesting energy management system that will maximize the lifetime and allow for self sufficiency of the digital signage. To bridge the gap between the energy source and the required peripheral supplies, a multiple input and multiple outputs (MIMO) H-bridge DC to DC converter was designed to harvest and regulate photovoltaic energy, and deliver energy to the various continuously active, and charge-and-execute loads of the WDSN. The H-bridge DC to DC converter comprising of a single inductor, two input power FETs from both primary and secondary power sources, and five symmetric output power FETs to create the various supply rails, supply the regulated energy required for the radio, the display, the sensors and the microcontroller. For the charge-and-execute supplies, a constant current ramp charging was developed to transfer charge at the maximum power point current of the photovoltaic cell to the supply capacitors of the peripherals that support the charge-and-execute supply generation. The MIMO H-bridge DC to DC converter presented supports active regulation using pulse width modulation for high current loads, pulse frequency modulation for light current loads, and ramp charging for capacitive loads. The controller was designed using digital logic and the entire MIMO H-bridge DC to DC converter occupies an area of 0.36 mm2 to 1.63 mm2 depending on the power transistor size selection. The measured instantaneous peak power efficiency is 86% while driving a 63 ?A load with a transient energy efficiency delivered to the load is 81%. The prototype WDSN dissipates 933 mJ to complete a server data synchronization and display refresh. The WDSN update energy when supplied with vibrational and photovoltaic power harvesting is equivalent to 7.52 hours of casual continuous walking (34.44 ?W), 1,230 laboratory door toggles (open and close at 986 ?W) and 12 hours of continuous office lighting (7 am to 7 pm with a daily total of 958 mJ under an average of 538 Lux of CFL lighting).

Full textThomas pynchon's works bear the marks of a general collapse of the values on which modern worldviews were founded. Pynchon belongs to a line of thought that attempts to resist the temptation of gathering multiplicity into a reassuring unity. A close reading of gravity's rainbow's first section shows that pynchon opens up a space in order to escape derterminations. It is a space open to subversion - a dionysian framebashing enterprise undertaken by a whole series of characters that are related to a type named the "badass" by pynchon himself; this type is examined in the second part of this study. The third part deals with the relationship between these excen- tric characters and death : through constant ambivalence, pynchon involves death in a struggle against death itself. The fourth part moves on to subversion as a "counterforce" which manifests itself beyond individual characters and attacks - from within - the very framework of fiction
