Al-Oun, Salem Safah. "Livestock marketing in the Jordanian Badia." Thesis, Durham University, 1997. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5465/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate and provide a better understanding of the processes of Bedu livestock marketing system in the Badia of Jordan, particularly farmers' market behaviour, linkages to markets and their decision-making process. A mixture of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies were utilised. A stratified random sample of 193 Bedu farmers, and interviews with traders were applied. The whole region of the Jordan Badia and Research Development Programme was covered. The questionnaires were distributed and every farmer was interviewed by the researcher in the period from July to November 1995.A broad conceptual framework was employed to investigate quantitatively the interactions and dependencies between household conditions, socio-economic characteristics and livestock sales. These factors, which are usually outside the livestock enterprise, are important in household marketing decision-making in relation to time and place of sale, and reasons for sale. The results of this study indicate: Regarding farmers' marketing behaviour, marketing decisions are related to a household's demand for cash, and environmental factors such as the high cost of production, disease, unstable government policy, household characteristics, and labour capacity. The most important of these factors is to generate cash to buy feed or to reduce costs and eliminate the risk of disease. Most households with fewer than 100 head of sheep were more restricted in their sales decisions than households with larger flocks.

Yenisoy, Sahin Eylem. "A Critical Reading Of Alain Badiou: Relativism In Badiou." Phd thesis, METU, 2012. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12614528/index.pdf.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a critical reading of Badiou&rsquo
s theory of truth. Contemporary popular trends such as postmodernism and anti-philosophy champion the principles of pluralism and contingency. They use these against Hegel&rsquo
s conception of history and theory of &lsquo
relational totality&rsquo
. Badiou agrees with these trends. But he criticizes their relativist theory of truth. He wants to provide an &lsquo
objective&rsquo
foundation for &lsquo
truth&rsquo
. The question I wish to explore in this thesis is then to analyze critically Badiou&rsquo
s work to find out whether he succeeds? To do this I am presenting Badiou&rsquo
s philosophical sources in ancient and modern philosophy and his main concepts he relies on. I am analyzing in particular in depth Badiou&rsquo
s understanding of ontology and phenomenology. To explain his concept of truth, I am analyzing his concepts of &lsquo
void&rsquo
, &lsquo
plurality&rsquo
, &lsquo
infinity&rsquo
. However, to make sense of his theory of truth more fully, I am looking also at his conceptions of &lsquo
event&rsquo
and subject&rsquo
, which are the main components of his theory of truth. After having analyzed his theory of of truth, I am looking at his conception of emancipatory politics, to see how his conception of truth works in his practical philosophy.

Singh, Adity. "Badiou and the problem of freedom." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.580142.

Full text
Abstract:
This project aims to derive a concept of freedom from Alain Badiou's philosophy through a close reading of his oeuvre from Theory of the Subject to Logics of Worlds and beyond. In order to interrogate Badiou on the concept of freedom, he is confronted, along the way, with some of his influences and adversaries. Thus, in the course of this thesis, Kant, Lacan, Rousseau, Marx and Lenin become his interlocutors. The purpose of the intellectual space that is opened by placing these thinkers in dialogue with Badiou is to explore what is at stake, philosophically and politically, in Badiou's project on the question of freedom. This study will commence by exploring the possibility of subjectivity and freedom in Badiou's ontology through a close reading of his use of axiomatic set- theory. Following this, the question of the capability of the subject will be discussed in relation to an ethics (guided by Kant and Lacan - focussing on the question of decision, action, and the universal) and a politics (guided by Rousseau, Marx and Lenin - focussing on the question of the collective, the state and emancipation) respectively. Finally, through a close study of Badiou's theory of appearance, the fundamental question concerning the determination of the human individual in the world will be posed, and the consequent possibility of freedom offered in Badiou's philosophy will be considered. It will be argued that for Badiou, freedom can be defined as the assumption of a necessity. The aim is to illustrate how Badiou's work gives hope to the existence of a subject which is paradoxically free because it lives for an imperative - a necessity imposed by a truth whose construction it participates in.

Rosser, Nicholas John. "The geomorphology of coarse clastic surfaces in arid environments." Thesis, Durham University, 2002. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3745/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the linkages between slope form and slope process in arid environments. In doing so, questions of the development of slopes in arid environments are examined. The age of many arid environment surfaces, combined with the sporadic nature of formative events, means that long-term surface and slope development remains an elusive question in geomorphology. Deserts have inspired many of the most enduring theories of landscape evolution and continue to provide a test-bed for new and emerging ideas in geomorphology. The clast-mantled surface of the northeast Jordan Badia presents an ideal opportunity to study the links between surface character and slope processes in arid environments. The northeast Badia also provides an opportunity to explore theories of slope development and the behaviour of earth surface systems. The nature of the clast covered ground surface has been assessed using a new digital aerial photography and image analysis technique. A field study of surface processes has been used to explore links between surface form and slope process. Additionally, a computer based simulation of long-term modification of the spatial distribution of surface clast has been undertaken. Given the subtle variation in earth surface form between disparate locations, a new semi-quantitative method of locating sample sites has been developed. The characterization of surface form has identified statistically significant relationships between ground surface character and two-dimensional slope form. Systematic variations in ground surface configuration, both within and between basalt flows, are found to be indicative of the action of slope processes. The first study of ground surface hydrology in the north eastern Badia has been undertaken. The results from a series of rain-storm simulation experiments show subtle but significant links between the action of surface processes and variations in ground surface form. The controls on surface process are diverse and vary in significance with position in the landscape. A combination of ground surface characterization and process studies has identified several interesting geomorphological phenomena The surfaces exhibit systematic variations in structure and organization. Homeostatic links between form and process are clearly apparent, which suggests that surface form influences and is influenced by process action via a process of positive feedbacks. Given the sporadic and infrequent recurrence of formative events in arid environments, a modelling approach has been developed to understand the long-term, spatial dynamics of the ground surface. The model has been used to simulate structure in the surface clast arrangement and the sensitivity of surface organization to physically constrained variations in model parameters. The model also allows the surfaces to be considered as self-organizing earth surface systems. The model results provide new insights into the process-form linkages in operation on clast-mantled arid surfaces. The model results provide new ways of examining and understanding the dynamics of clast mantled arid surfaces and have implications for the application of self-organization in geomorphology.

Alsina, Costabella Laia. "Francesc Miquel i Badia (Barcelona 1840 - 1899): crític, tractadista i col·leccionista d'Art." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/297705.

Full text
Abstract:
The research presented below has a structure that revolves around three aspects related with Art that, as the title indicates, cultivates and defines the personality of Francesc Miquel i Badia: art critic, treatises writer and collector. These three facets become at the same time three of the five main chapters of the work. First, however, precedes a chapter elaborated on his biography and in which both expose the most personal details of his life as his character, through the years of his educational training school, university and artistic. We also talk about his professional occupations that, despite having been eclipsed by the public role that he played as a art critic, do not forget that his primary means of make a living came from Teachings who taught at the Official Fine Arts School and for holding the position of secretary at Provincial Academy of Fine Arts. The second chapter and the first major structural block of the research explain his role as art critic, work done primarily at Diario de Barcelona, a significant publication in Catalonia where his artistic and literary review was expressed uninterruptedly throughout the last third of the nineteenth century. These circumstances linked to more general studies that precede us about the history of art criticism in Catalonia or more specific about his literary criticism, have been the factors that have contributed to the dedication of Francesc Miquel i Badia to journalism criticism, to be mostly remembered and associated with. Not forgetting the compilation we made about collaborations in other publications. We focus our attention on emphasizing the main artistic issues treated and try to find out if there is an evolution or preference for any of them, putting it in relation to the timeline. Simultaneously with the publication of his articles, he published a series of treatises on the history of decorative arts and fine arts , that we analyze in the chapter on its side as a treatise writer. In it, we also present a chronological review of all its non- journalistic articles such schools admission speeches, conferences, prologues and translations. Below, we tell in a separate chapter, an analysis of his aesthetic view of both the ancient and contemporary art primarily dealt in his articles and treaties. Our interest center on identifying artistic issues of which, he dealt with priority in assessing whether there was originality, evolution or change of thought and determine the origin of the theoretical foundations on which settled his artistic judgments. Finally, the last major section we talk about Miquel i Badia as a collector of ancient art and we rebuild, locate and catalog the collection of art objects brought together. This collection stood out mainly for the quality of the decorative arts relating to furniture, ceramic, glasswork and textiles sections, unprecedented in the history of collecting art in Catalonia and that led to a major prestige at the time.

Spicer, Neil James. "Health care in sedentarising communities : a case study in the Jordan Badia." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2000. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4849/.

Full text
Abstract:
The World Health Organisation's (WHO) 'Health for All by the Year 2000' (HFA2000) resolution is intended to promote improvements in the equality of health care provision, the basis of which is universal accessibility to basic health care. The Jordanian Government, in accordance with HFA2000, has attempted to improve accessibility in rural communities by providing an extensive network of basic rural health clinics which are intended to be acceptable and accessible to all communities. Within this context, the research considers two interrelated themes. The first theme considers changes in health and illness practices, and particularly the wide-scale and rapid acceptance of modern medical services at the same time as `traditional' Arabic medicines are becoming relatively unimportant in the north east Badia. This study highlights the connections between health and illness discourses in the past, Bedu social values, and the wider social economic milieu, and how these are reflected in the forms and use of Arabic medicines. The literature widely assumes that culture, `traditional' social structures and attitudes inhibit the acceptance and effective utilisation of modern medical services, and that education, for example, is a key way to address this problem. This research engages with this assumption by evaluating the significance of social values, education and health awareness programmes, knowledge of health issues, together with socio-economic changes in explaining the acceptance of modern medicine and the adoption of preventative medicine and practices, together with changing attitudes to children's health. The second key theme of this research is to examine the extent to which basic government health services have been made accessible to the nomadic, sedentarising and settled rural population of the north east Jordan Badia, and specifically their children, a particularly vulnerable group, and whether this explains patterns of health and illness behaviour. To this end, the importance of geographical, organisational (health service), economic and social factors is evaluated in explaining variations in accessibility mediating the effective utilisation of these services at family level.

Pfeifer, Geoffrey Dennis. "The New Materialism: Althusser, Badiou, and Zizek." Scholar Commons, 2012. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4202.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation traces the post-Marxist and materialist positions of two leading contemporary European thinkers: Slavoj Zizek and Alain Badiou. These thinkers, I argue, collectively offer a way between the traditional Hegelian Marxist's overarching meta-narrative of a necessary evolution from worse to better, and the post-modern pessimism of a lack of possibility for such a social evolution. It is this middle path, offered by these two thinkers, that this dissertation seeks to explore and further explain. The focal point of this dissertation is the type of philosophical materialism that is collectively offered by Badiou and Zizek, what I call the "New Materialism." I first explain the origins of this materialist position as it emerges in the thought of Louis Althusser, then I discuss how Badiou and Zizek, each in their own way, seek to correct the remaining problems that exist for the Althusserian position, while refusing to reject its core materialist insights. Finally, I assess the ways in which both Badiou and Zizek attempt to overcome the Althusserian problems, arguing that ultimately Zizek's corrective succeeds in remaining within the materialist paradigm laid out by Althusser, whereas Badiou's method brings him dangerously close to a kind of philosophical idealism that he wishes to avoid.

The object of this thesis is Alain Badiou's claim of the communist idea as the principle of politics, his identification of communism as the modern name of the concept of justice in Plato. Characterizing the regime of Capital as the inconsistency of the present world, the communist hypothesis defended by Badiou states that the failures experienced in the attempts to construct a new world, a project of emancipation, should serve to assess the reasons of this failure, and never lead to relinquishment of further attempts. In the face of the failure in the attempt of making real a true idea, trying again is a feature of Badiou?s thinking and action. This thesis also analyzes the evolution of Badiou?s political thought and the nature of this evolution, still in course. It is also demonstrated that Badiou was affected by political processes and events of the class struggle in his militant period of life, the changes in the=o9?ituation and the effects of these changes in his formulations: the changes in his communist project. At the same time, it is evidenced the continuity in his thought, pointing out the most detachable indications of Badiou's fidelity to the communist idea, as well as to Marxism as a fundamental reference of his thought, of his general coordinates of political thinking and action. The central thesis is his loyalty to this idea. The thesis concludes with a case study, using the philosophical categories of the transformation theory formulated by Alain Badiou. This case study is the evaluation of the characteristics and meaning of the popular and youthful uprising experienced by Brazil in June 2013, analyzing whether this social and political process was what Badiou defined as the "event" or whether it was a normal fact, one more modification, trying to visualize its possible features and the subjects involved in its effects. It is also shown that June 2013 represented and continues to represent a political process which produces truths and, in this sense, has a close relationship with philosophy.

Abstract:
During the last decades, a widespread suspicion towards the notion of universality, in philosophy as well as in politics, and the avoidance of any reference to it, have become commonplace. Nevertheless, thinking the « everybody » of politics — as generic and unconstructible as this « everybody » might be — seems to remain an inescapable task for any reflection on emancipation. Our research has a double aim: on the one hand, to show how universality is reinvented, in specific ways, in Alain Badiou’s and Jacques Rancière’s philosophies; on the other hand, to clarify what thinking universality from the perspective of their conceptions of politics means. By analysing the conceptual shifts and re-definitions that a renewal of this category requires, we point out the specificity of these assuredly contemporary conceptions which, through an assertive re-opening of the question of equality, allow us to conceive a renewed logic for the articulation of universality and politics. A notion of universality which must be grasped as being « singularised » is the guiding idea of our research

Abstract:
This thesis offers a naturalist revision of Alain Badiou’s philosophy. This goal is pursued through an encounter of Badiou’s mathematical ontology and theory of truth with contemporary trends in philosophy of mathematics (mathematical structuralism) and philosophy of science (ontic structural realism). I take issue with Badiou’s inability to elucidate the link between the empirical and the ontological, and his residual reliance on a Heideggerian project of fundamental ontology, which undermines his own immanentist principles. I will argue for both a bottom-up naturalisation of Badiou’s philosophical approach to mathematics (insisting on an account mindful of the socio-biological roots of our mathematical abilities and concepts – brains to universe) and a top-down naturalisation (arguing that our best physical theories seem to indicate a collapse of the distinction between the mathematical and the non-mathematical – universe to brains). Articulating my particular understanding of what realism and naturalism should commit us to, I propose a creative fusion of Badiou’s attention to metamathematical results with a structural-informational metaphysics, proposing a ‘matherialism’ uniting the more daring speculative insights of the former with the naturalist and empiricist commitments motivating the latter.

Abstract:

É o instante inaugural do surgimento do primeiro nome.

Abstract:
In the period of wars (1918 to 1939), time when geopolitical thought has become popular and has reached academic status, South America was object of reflection between two thinkers who have become classics of this new discipline. We are talking about Carlos Badia Malagrida (1890 to 1937) and Mário Travassos (1891 to 1973). In this work well search and well make the comparison between two authors have already mentioned and their geopolitical models arguing from the first chapter that both of them depart from the same regional division about South American subcontinent that evidences the intellectual connection between two thinkers. Obviously, how to compare means not only outline the similarities but also discuss the points against. So, here well discuss the differences of the political projects quite noticeable in the analysis of both works. Therefore well develop a text with four chapters: the first of them, from descriptive nature will submit the reader the details of each theory thus aiming a preliminary comparison that offers an initial sketch of the geopolitical regions of the subcontinent. The three chapters following each one will deal with an against point which will be contrasted the Hispanic-americanist perception of Malagrida to the Luso-american view of Travassos. These issues are respectively the ones related to the Silver River Basin, about the degree of effectiveness of integration of the Brazilian territory, its ability to forecast the power and, finally, the role of Bolivia in its political territorial organization of local states of South America. At the end, well evaluate the relevance of the ideas discussed as an international relations theory in an effort of assessment the current South American situation.

Abstract:
This thesis considers the importance of livestock in the household economy of the Ahl al Jebel Bedouin in the arid Badia region of north east Jordan. The principal objective of the study is to provide development planners working within the Badia region with information on how livestock are used and valued within a pastoral society and indicate ways in which these values may be subject to change. The study demonstrates that Bedouin herdowners have responded purposefully to developing regional markets for livestock products and have identified the income and capital growth values of livestock investments. However, the study further suggests that in important ways production for market supply is closely bound with the management of household resources, notably production for domestic consumption and the two spheres of production constitute complimentary aspects of the pastoral livelihood strategy. It is further argued that pastoral production in the Badia is mediated by the prevailing Bedouin value system which ascribes non-material values to livestock, thus giving social meaning to the way in Which herd owners choose to manage their herds. The thesis argues that the relationship between herd owners and their livestock must necessarily be flexible and suggests that changes in the way in which livestock are valued may constitute an important element in how households respond to change. The study thus characterises the Ahl al Jebel herd management objectives as innovative and fluid, and indicates that approaches to pastoral development need to be more sensitive to household objectives and more supportive of indigenous innovation.

Ige, Kehinde Davies. "Poverty attribution and reaction to income inequality in Nigeria: the case of Badia community in Lagos." Thesis, University of Fort Hare, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10353/329.

Abstract:
This study was about the reaction of disadvantaged groups and persons to inequality and deprivation. Set in Badia, a low income community in Lagos, Nigeria, it investigates the main effects of community members’ attributions of causes of poverty in motivating or impeding their reaction to inequality. Relative Deprivation (RD) theory proposed that dissatisfaction with social outcomes depend on subjective feelings rather than objective criteria. However scholars found empirical difficulties in predicting collective action on the basis of RD. Resource Mobilization proponents argued on the contrary that feelings are not salient within the framework of action. The infusion of Social Identity Theory (SIT) into RD research however resolved the paradox of action with SIT’s argument that action was contingent upon the perception of permeability and legitimacy of inter-group structures. However, despite successes of SIT, scholars found that it was unable to predict the type of actions group members will take in response to injustice and the nature of possible actions. Propositions of RD and SIT were therefore suitable for integration into the proposition of Taylor & McKirnan’s (1984) Five Stage Model (FSM) of inter-group relations that reactions to RD feelings were predicated upon the dynamics of the social philosophy guiding stratification. Using an integrated RD, SIT and FSM framework, this study shows how disadvantaged group members’ responses to deprivation proceeded as predicted by the FSM from mutual acceptance to collective action mediated by their perception of causes of poverty. This complements the trend in the literature on reaction to inequality and it's almost ii exclusive focus on instrumental and affective concerns while neglecting the role of consensually shared beliefs in motivating or impeding action and willingness to act in response to injustice. The study hypothesized that the pattern of causal attributions of poverty of respondents will shape their ‘predisposition to act’ and the type of action they would engage in. The main hypothesis of the study therefore was that poverty attribution mediates the relationship between ‘feelings of injustice’ and ‘reaction to inequality’. For instance where respondents attribute poverty to individual or fatalistic factors they will adopt individual action whereas where attributions are structural, responses will be collective, where feelings of injustice were present. A survey was conducted using a five-level Likert scale to decipher respondents’ perceptions of feelings of injustice, their causal attribution of poverty, their levels of willingness to embark on collective action and actions taken in the preceding year. In the first stage of analysis, responses (n = 383) were reduced using Principal Components Analysis (PCA) to determine how questionnaire items contributed to variables under consideration. Subsequently, variables extracted were correlated and regressed. While bivariate correlation was used to test simple relationships between variables, a stepwise hierarchical regression analysis was used to decipher how sub-dimensions of poverty attribution mediate the relationship between respondents’ feelings of injustice and their willingness to embark on collective action entering variables in succession into the regression equation. Furthermore, a 1 x 3 x 5 Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) was used to test the mediation effects of poverty attribution sub-dimensions on the relationship between injustice feelings and actions. The results showed iii that structural attribution was the preferred explanation for poverty among Badia residents, as this explanation was preferred by a majority of the respondents. It was also shown that while 96.9% of respondents used more than one causal attribution, a majority of structural attributors adopted fatalistic attribution as second choice of explanation for poverty. On the basis of the above, and in line with previous studies (Mann, 1970; Bobo, 1991), it was deduced that the possibility for radical action would be diminished as a result of this ‘dual/split consciousness’. The result further confirmed as hypothesized, that fatalistic attribution had a negative correlation with willingness to embark on collective action as respondents in the fatalistic condition were not willing to embark on collective action. However, respondents in the structural conditions were more willing to engage in collective action. While attributions predicted willingness to embark on collective action, MANCOVA showed that action proceeded in a continuum as predicted by the FSM. For example, while the introduction of fatalistic and individual attribution to the equation hypothesizing the relationship between injustice feelings and action showed that resultant actions were predominantly individual normative, post-hoc inclusion of the structural dimension to the equation showed an addition variance to the equation for collective action. This indicated that structural attributions enhance collective normative action. However, consistent with most studies in the literature, the results did not predict collective non-normative action1. Results indicated low adherence of subject to items eliciting collective action suggesting that past studies which reported high preference of collective action by disadvantaged groups may have been influenced by ‘social desirability effects’, given Topf’s (1995) assertion that what people say they will do is often not what they do but what they perceive as right in the particular situation. 1 The only notable exception is Boen & Vanbeselaere (1998) 2 A full discussion of lay explanations of poverty is reserved for chapter 4 of this thesis. iv The study however proposed on the basis of the salience of structural attributions that poverty attributions may become useful for Social Movement Organizations (SMOs) interested in fostering social change. However, while the study showed that attribution influences willingness to embark on action it does not show how attribution becomes salient in group membership. Thus there is a need for future studies to investigate how attribution affects group identification. Similarly, given the dearth of studies of the attribution of the ‘actual poor’ of poverty, it is necessary for future studies to test the validity of the result from the present study indicating stronger adherence to fatalistic than individualistic attributions of poverty among the disadvantaged. While many past studies of attribution and those of reaction to injustice have been on samples of middle-class adults in developed countries, or artificially created deprived groups, the present study being of the ‘real life’ poor in a Third World setting, provides evidence of ‘real world’ actions and attributions of people experiencing poverty.

Abstract:
Dicha relación aquí no queda cancelada.
The present thesis presents the thought of the French philosopher Alain Badiou, with the intention of emphasizing the concept of existence within this philosophical construction, thanks to a series of conceptual tools that will allow to construct a theoretical constellation around the practice of artistic research. This set of elements of nomination, which proposes the thesis, allows not only to reflect on the artistic phenomenon - especially in relation to our contemporaneity - from new starting points; But at the same time, it allows the generation of an effective artistic thought that would be placed in the line almost invisible between the philosophy and the art of today. That is why, based on the analysis of Badiou's works, the thesis was not only constructed from writing, but also through a series of visual exercises that attempted to test its hypothesis. The thesis is situated in a localized almost, which proposes the following hypothesis: the philosophy of Alain Badiou allows to appoint to what it waits to be named. This thinking, I affirm, offers a possibility to think art, its practice, beyond the ruins where, I understand, today its existing body looms. A thinking that is in fact a diagonal that leaves, flees, tracing a space eccentrically. A way of naming that, in this case, does not determine what it names, does not cancel it or over determines, but rather, invites to existence of what inexists for the empire. Why want to name what exists without a name? This was the question that founded the thesis. However, this question hides an a priori functionality when naming. The naming that the thesis alludes is not a naming that archives, flattens, statizates, numbers, ends. This naming is a disavowal of the name of membership and exclusion. Neither names for access, as a national citizenship, nor exclude as a dependency, to make invisible what exists. The naming here is local, operative, and in a sense, performative. Its occurrence is already an action, and is not limited to the composite reflection of what could come to deny. Finally, the thesis had as its object the almost imperceptible point of separation between philosophy and art. This relationship is not canceled here. On the contrary, the thesis and its author hope that, through its body, critical practice paths will be inaugurated. This thesis, as fate, does not seek an end, but the opening of a hole, or even less, the act of a cut, or even the act of that cut as a measure of its own coming.

Kim, Min Seong. "Processes of social change in the works of Badiou and Laclau." Thesis, University of Essex, 2018. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/23439/.

Full text
Abstract:
No theory of social change can circumvent the task of specifying the process that transforms the existent order into a different order, and determining that which accounts for the difference between those two orders. This thesis examines whether the theories of social change found in the works of Alain Badiou and Ernesto Laclau succeed in fulfilling this task. Badiou contends that a political process transforms the situation in which it unfolds in so far as what it produces is a ‘truth’. Certain implications of the set-theoretical ontological discourse through which Badiou conceptualizes truths, however, prevents an unambiguous appraisal of their socially transformative character. Although Badiou stipulates that the transformative potential of a truth lies in its ‘generic’ universality, this universality becomes indistinguishable from particularity when its transformative effects are limited to a situation—but it is precisely the interplay between situations, in the plural, that is not adequately reflected in set-theoretical ontology. Whilst Laclau’s theory of hegemony can be interpreted as providing an account of this interplay between pluralities of situations, it has its own shortcoming: the transition between different social orders cannot be thought under hegemony theory as anything other than a transition wherein the to-come is conditioned by the present to an extent that is theoretically underdetermined, resulting in the blurring of the distinction between social transformation and social reproduction. The final part of this thesis explores the possibility of bringing together the Laclauian notion of the ‘simplification’ of the social space through hegemonic articulation and Badiou’s theorization of truth procedure, in an attempt to conceive the particular kind of situation in which a political process would potentially have far-reaching socially transformative consequences.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis argues the need for a critique of foundational values which are often taken to be unquestionable. Values and evaluations inform the decision-making of human individuals on a daily basis on all possible levels – the local, the national, the international, and the global. Yet for all the importance of values, their origin, functioning and effects are rarely brought to light. This paper opposes critique as a creative and genealogical endeavour against shallow conformist analyses that serve the established status quo. With the aid of Nietzsche’s philosophy, in its first part this paper establishes an outline of how a proper critique would look. The proposed method of critique – a transvaluation which seeks to determine the origin of values in order to interpret them in a novel and more affirmative fashion – is then applied via the philosophy of Spinoza in the second part of the thesis wherein the origin of values is questioned. The third part employs the philosophy of Badiou both to bring back the critique to a more modern footing and to juxtapose Badiou to Spinozist and Nietzschean transvaluations. This part also paves the way for a concluding comparative section where the key features of the three philosophers are contrasted regarding the foundational values which where perpetually criticized throughout the thesis. The overall purpose of the paper is to explore the possibility of an alternative method of critique to the seemingly dominant modern opposition... [to full text]

Wootten, Devon. "Faith and the incommensurable: from Pascal to Badiou via Kierkegaard and Kuhn." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6016.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the way the Pythagorean conception of the incommensurable structures the assertions of subjective agency in Blaise Pascal’s Pensées (1670), Søren Kierkegaard’s Concluding Unscientific Postscript (1846), and Alain Badiou’s Being and Event (1988). The Pythagoreans coined the term “incommensurable,” alogos, to describe magnitudes that cannot emerge within a specific system of signification. Across three chapters, I extend the Pythagorean understanding of the incommensurable into the areas of philosophy, religious studies, and mathematics in order to posit the fundamental instability at the core of subjective agency. Moving from Thomas S. Kuhn’s failure to define the incommensurable logically in his Structures of Scientific Revolutions, I argue that such a conception of the incommensurable must be understood as fundamentally faith-based. Given the fact that the incommensurable cannot emerge into signification, its existence must be posited on faith. Pascal, Kierkegaard, and Badiou each move from a faith-based assertion of the incommensurable to offer a conception of subjective agency within a specific system of signification. Thus, against the work of Bonaventura Cavalieri and Evangelista Torricelli, Pascal refigures the incommensurably infinite to establish a heterodox subjective agency within Augustinian faith-by-grace; Kierkegaard manages to navigate the incommensurability of direct communication and personal faith by effacing his pseudonym Johannes Climacus; and Alain Badiou relies on the incommensurable “event” to imagine the possibility the subject’s calling into being of the new. In each of these three texts, the incommensurable functions to guarantee the possibility of subject agency within a specific system of signification.

Lai, Tsz Yuen. "Investigation on logic of the real: Lautman, Deleuze, Badiou and transcendental materialism." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2018. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/503.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims to reconfigure 'materialism' against the contemporary context of philosophy. By carrying out a meta-philosophical investigation on the logical schemas, philosophical operations and deployments of the major philosophical projects of Albert Lautman (1908-1944), Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995), and Alain Badiou (1937- ), i.e., Lautman's philosophy of mathematics (especially the dialectic governing his theory of 'mathematical genesis'), Deleuze's philosophy of difference (especially the logic of event and metamorphosis underlying the 'Deleuzian genesis' extracted from Chapter IV and V of Difference and Repetition), and Badiou's mathematical ontology (especially the fundamental logical schema of his mature ontology presented in Being and Event), this dissertation attempts to show how the works of these three philosophers are contributive to the aforementioned task of the reconfiguration of materialist philosophy. In terms of the problematics of 'formalization of the real', the 'transcendental methodology', and the 'immanent principle' of reality shared by all these three philosophical projects, I propose that their works can be defined as a particular type of materialist philosophy that I call 'transcendental materialism'; and this 'transcendental materialism', in turn, ought to be comprehended according to a modern reading of Platonism, i.e., the non-orthodox re-articulation of Platonic philosophy comprised of Lautman's unorthodox-realist Platonism, Deleuze's materialism as overturned Platonism, and Badiou's materialism with the Platonic Idea. I conclude that Lautman, Deleuze, and Badiou are three philosophers of 'transcendental materialism' knotted by this modern Platonism. On the strength of the 'transcendental materialism' constituted in view of the investigation presented by this dissertation, I intend to show that Lautman's philosophy of mathematics offers the proper perspective or the 'condition' for a genuine comprehension of Deleuze's major philosophical project in the late 1960s; on the basis of this genuine comprehension, Deleuze's philosophical project, which concentrates in the study of the transcendental logic of the real instead of providing empirical knowledge of sensible objects and material entities, ought to be categorized as 'transcendental materialism', a category that is also competent to define Badiou's philosophical project, i.e., 'a materialism without object/matter'; and therefore, the philosophical demarcation within contemporary materialist philosophy ought not to be simply portrayed as 'Badiou vs. Deleuze', 'dialectical materialism vs. vitalist materialism'. The genuine philosophical demarcation within materialism today is 'Idea against Matter'. 'Transcendental materialism' is 'a materialism with the Idea' or 'a materialism of the Idea' which is against the 'naïve materialism' or the 'metaphysics of the Matter'. In case transcendental materialism might have been conceived as a new 'metaphysics', it is the metaphysics of the imperceptible, the inexistent, and the inconsistent. The 'material reality', after 'transcendental materialism', is 'non-All'. Concerning the far more complicated confrontations between different trends of contemporary materialist/realist philosophy, my proposal of constituting the 'transcendental materialism' can be considered as an attempt to reconfigure the current debates on materialist philosophy: to reorganize the dialogues, for instance, between Badiou and his opponents -- 'object-oriented-ontology', 'speculative realism', and 'non-philosophy'; to integrate Quentin Meillassoux's project into transcendental materialism in terms of their shared 'transcendental methodology'; and, most importantly, to 'radicalize' materialist/realist philosophy towards a theory of practice.

Bartlett, Rebecca. "How failure works : understanding and analysing the characteristics of badfilm, 1950-1970." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7058/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses close textual analysis to examine formal stylistic characteristics located in films that have, since their initial release, gained a reputation for being bad. It provides a framework that allows badness to be examined without subjectivity, further developing the concept of "objective badness" as proposed by J. Hoberman. The films examined are categorised as "badfilm", a term used to describe films that are identified, distinguished, and potentially valued for their incompetence. These claims of badness implicitly assume the audience can recognise the filmmaker's unintentional failure to achieve conventional standards of goodness. Despite this, consideration of intentionality has only recently been briefly addressed. This thesis expands further on concepts of intentionality, recognising this as being crucial in establishing objective badness. There is a tension within badfilm appreciation between enjoyment and critical acknowledgement of the inherent badness. Attempts to reconcile such conflicting responses vary. Films may be described as "so bad they're good," a problematic term with implications that have only recently been adequately considered. Alternatively, audiences downplay badness, favouring instead an auteur approach or adopting avant-garde principles as a way of understanding the unconventional aesthetic apparent in badfilm. Particularly in fan-based writing, due in part to the established reputations of certain films, responses to badfilm largely take for granted the widespread acceptance of badness. Academic responses frequently focus on reception studies, considering badfilm in terms of cult, and its audience as subculture. Consequently, detailed analysis of the ways in which badness and failure function within the films is still needed. Using American productions (1950-1970) that are already established as part of the badfilm canon, this thesis analyses textual characteristics that have been repeatedly cited as evidence of badness. Post-production sound is considered, as is performance, the use of recycled footage, and editing. The failure of individual elements, their failure to support each other, and the resulting incoherence have a direct impact on the film and its reception. In extreme cases, the failure removes the viewer from the "illusion" of cinema, emphasising the technical and mechanical aspects of film production. Objective badness is revealed through dual recognition of both the attempts to be good and the failure to achieve goodness, resulting in a film that exposes its intentions and dismantles immersive potential through an inherent, often excessive, "consistently inconsistent" incoherence. By approaching badfilm in such a way, badness can be accepted as a valuable and lucrative line of academic enquiry, unrestricted by subjectivity and taste.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD examines the mural cycle that decorates the upper gallery of the main cloister of the Badia Fiorentina in Florence, called Chiostro degli Aranci, in relation to the postmasaccian Florentine painting. The cycle consists of 10 lunettes painted between 1436 and 1438 with the buon fresco technique and a strip of basement decoration that accompanies them. This work is attributed in this PhD to Giovanni di Consalvo, painter of Portuguese origins, whose name comes from a ledger of the monastery of the Badia Fiorentina, now preserved in the ASF, that mentions repeatedly Consalvo as a recipient of payments for pigments and other materials to carry out the work of the frescoes. The frescoes in the Chiostro degli Aranci are the result of a commission Abbot Gomes of Portugal, who ruled the Badia Fiorentina during the period, and respond to his desire for reform monasticism and to return it to its origins, to the Rule and to the Desert Fathers. The analysis allows us to consider the mural cycle of Badia Fiorentina as the first introducer of Flemish influence on Florentine painting, mainly with the pictorial resource of the reflection of objects in the water. The role of the cycle as the introducer of this resource in Florentine painting was very important for the early work of some of the painters of the next generation as Piero della Francesca or Alesso Baldovinetti. On the other hand, teaches us today, over a period of the Florentine painting, dominated by large mural cycles as the apse of Sant'Egidio or the Gianfigliazzi chapel of Santa Trinita and that today we can only learn about them through its predecessor, the cycle of Badia.

Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the issue of how to create new rights, breathing the air of the radical thought of Alain Badiou and Antonio Negri, from whom it has been made an intensive and selective review. It goes over the articulation of ontology, event and constituent power, as polarities for a theory of the subject. The question in discussion is about rights beyond, or before, the state recognizes them. A living law freed from states or markets mediations. Law as power [potentia], and not sub species of the norm. Singular right and common right are also discussed. The subject in question is communist subject, internal to the real movement for the abolition of the present situation, following Marx. Other authors frequently referred: Spinoza and Hegel. Some methodological aspects are presented briefly: con-ricerca (of operaismo autonomist), dialectical materialism of scission (Badiou) and constituent praxis (Negri). Beyond some debate limited to political philosophy field, this work adopts premise that thinking is immediately political, and that there can be exerted a political intervention in philosophy itself and knowledge production. The conclusion puts Negris and Badious theories of subject to interact, on points developed through the text, aiming hopefully to contribute for some practical or theoretical tools. A special remark must be made for the importance of the double procedure pars construens pars destruens, for a truly subversive and radical politics. The mutual incidence of one over the other is vital for any movements real capacity of transformation.

Abstract:
This thesis traces the ‘New Moment’ in Pauline reception in the writings of Alain Badiou, Terry Eagleton and Slavoj Žižek. It explores how the Pauline epistles are read and feature in their thought. An answer to the question, 'why Paul?' prompts reflection on what it is to read and understand the Apostle. An introduction sets out the writers of this ‘New Moment’ [Jacob Taubes, Giorgio Agamben, Stanislas Breton, as well as Badiou, Eagleton and Žižek] before isolating the figures of this study. The reception of this ‘moment’ by mainstream New Testament studies is considered, and with it the charge of ‘appropriation’. The concept of ‘appropriation’ is explored, and a definition arrived at, for the purpose of evaluating the readings we will go on to discover. As part of this notion of ‘appropriation’, the turn to Gadamer in recent New Testament study is surveyed. We suggest another potential hermeneutical approach that derives from Gadamer is possible. Thus, the object of this study is both an instance of, and means by which to critique the understanding of, New Testament Wirkungsgeschichte. Each of our thinkers is then considered in turn. The outline for each chapter is the same. A brief introduction to the figure with bibliographical background salient to his Pauline reading precedes some textual examples indicative of that reading. We then move to analyse the manner of that reading and certain conceptual problems which are revealed in the course of the engagement with Paul. The conclusion analyses the approaches, and reasons for turning, to Paul on the part of these thinkers. Salient differences between each thinker's reading are noted and the charge of appropriation is evaluated afresh. The implications of such readings for conventional biblical criticism are considered, and the success of an approach which explores a Gadamerean-inspired interest in reception in the manner adopted by this thesis is judged.

Abstract:

The tropeirismo, the occupation of the muleteers, is a theme which is frequently exalted by different composers and interpreters of gauchesca regional music, having in mind its importance in the economic and cultural development of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. This phenomenon, which extended from the end of the XVII century until the middle of the XX century, in the southern states of Brazil, besides being responsible for the emergence of countless villages and cities throughout the routes, provided a huge cultural exchange. The mingling of the different cultures involved in the regular activities of the muleteers, the tropeiro, created a kind of common identity. Cultural tracescaused by the contact between birivas – as were known the muleteers from São Paulo and the inhabitants of northern area of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, called Cima da Serra region – and gaúchos (the inhabitants of Rio Grande do Sul) are expressed in the culinary, dance, description of the work in the fields and in language, especially revealed in the choice of lexical items. In this research, we propose a lexical-semantic analysis of the lyrics of fourteen gauchesca regional songs, in order to investigate how the regional music reconstitutes the history of tropeirismo. The aim is to verify whether the mystification of the muleteer occurs, similarly to what happens to the gaúcho, which our analysis proved to be right. Based on the survey of the lexis related to the activities of the tropeiros present in the songs, we propose a model of organization of the memory of tropeirismo in lexical fields. According to Abbade (2012), the organization of the lexicon goes beyond the mere contribution to linguistic studies: it also evidences the history and the customs of the linguistic group that uses it.
