Abstract:
Ratoon stunt, caused by the bacterium Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli, is one of the major sugarcane diseases worldwide. The objectives of this study were to determine the variation in morphology and DNA sequence of L. xyli subsp. xyli strains isolated in China, to compare the changes that occurred in vascular ultrastructure and levels of endogenous hormone abscisic acid (ABA), auxins (indoleacetic acid [IAA]), and gibberellic acids (GA3) in sugarcane stalks. Experiments were also conducted with two sugarcane varieties, ‘ROC22’ and ‘Badila’, in the greenhouse to understand the cytological and physiological mechanisms of L. xyli subsp. xyli–induced growth stunting. There were three treatments in the experiments: (i) healthy plants (L. xyli subsp. xyli–free plants), (ii) infected plants (L. xyli subsp. xyli–infected seedcanes treated with hot water, and (iii) infected plants (healthy seedcanes dipped in L. xyli subsp. xyli cell culture). The results showed that sequence coverage of a locally isolated strain, LxxGXBZ01, was 99.99%, and the average nucleotide identity between LxxGXBZ01 and the other well-characterized Brazilian isolate LxxCTCB07 was 93.61%. LxxGXBZ01 occurred in different sizes and shapes in xylem vessels of infected plants. In comparison with healthy stalks, the secondary walls of the vessel element in L. xyli subsp. xyli–infected stalks were degraded with uneven wall thickness, deformities, sticky substances, and electron-dense substances accumulated inside the cells. Compared with the healthy and hot-water treatments, the contents of IAA and GA3 were significantly lower, while that of ABA was significantly higher in the L. xyli subsp. xyli–infected stalks. The information obtained in this study will expand our understanding of ratoon stunt etiology and cytological and physiological bases of the disease manifestation.

ABSTRACT: In this article are analysed the judgments of the Constitucional Court on Decrees-law dealing with social rights within the economic crisis from 2008 to 2015. Attention is paid to the constitutional grounds put forward by the two opposing positions within the Constitutional Court, which highlights the different concepts of social rights, their protection and their regulation. It also becomes clear that the majority used weak constitutional grounds to support its position.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to assess the impacts of climate change on the surface water resources of the Sassandra catchment area. This study conducted at the scale of the Sassandra sub-catchment areas took into account six (6) sub-catchment areas: Bafing in Badala, Boa in Vialadougou, Davo in Dakpadou, Lobo in Nibehibe, Nzo in Kahin and Sassandra in Semien. The methodological approach is based on the evaluation of the drying up coefficients, the duration of drying up and the volumes of water mobilized by the aquifers. All these parameters were estimated using Maillets law. The analysis of the different dynamics was carried out using the cumulative sums test. The results showed that the breaks in rainfall and the drying up coefficient were between 1982 and 2000, 1985 and 2003 respectively. After these breaks, the drying up coefficients increased (Bafing in Badala, Boa in Vialadougou and Davo in Dakpadou) from 17 to 25.9% and decreased (Lobo in Nibehibe and Nzo in Kahin) from 1.4 to 6.3%. A shortening of 3 to 5 days was observed on the Bafing in Badala, the Boa in Vialadougou and the Davo in Dakpadou. The volumes of water mobilized by the aquifers decreased on the Bafing in Badala, the Davo in Dakpadou and the Sassandra in Semien. While they increased on the Boa in Vialadougou, the Lobo in Nibehibe and the Nzo in Kahin.

Abstract:
Paraules clau: Curial e Güelfa, Enyego d’Àvalos, València, Milà, Nàpols, Alfons el Magnànim, Lola Badia, Jaume Torró Abstract: The journal Estudis Romànics, 39 (2017) has just published my article “Enyego de Avalos, author of the Curial e Guelfa?”, which summarizes a part of my thesis, La cort napolitana d’Alfons el Magnànim: el context del «Curial e Güelfa» (University of València, 2016). It supports the hypothesis that Enyego d’Àvalos –a native of Toledo, educated in Valencia, Philip Maria Visconti’s counselor and great Chamberlain of Alfons the Magnanimous, at the Kingdom of Naples– would have been the author of the chivalric anonymous romance Curial e Guelfa. Although unpublished thesis, Lola Badia and Jaume Torró have spoken out against my hypothesis through defamatory statements to the media and a very biased report. My purpose in this article is to refute the supposedly scientific arguments of Lola Badia and Jaume Torró, highlight their prejudices and misunderstandings and claim my right to make my own research and to freely express my interpretations. My thesis, which is the result of years of work in archives and analysis of a selected bibliography, has been prepared in accordance with rigorous scientific methodology. The unusual reaction of Badia and Torró is due to the fact that my hypothesis invalidates many of their approaches, which have caused great confusion among historins of medieval literature, because they place Curial in the Iberian courts of the Trastamara royal family and not in the courts of the duke of Milan and of the King of Naples, in touch with Italian humanism. Abstract:

Abstract:
The genus Imleria can be easily distinguished from other genera of Boletaceae by the combination of the following characters: a chestnut brown pileus and stipe, a cream to pale yellow hymenophore, a viscid pileal surface when moist, a cyanescent context and hymenophore on handling or exposure, an ixotrichodermal pileipellis and smooth spores. The monophyly of Imleria and the detection of four independent species were highly supported by phylogenetic analyses using 5 gene markers. The four species, including the previously recognized Im. badia, Im. obscurebrunnea, plus the newly discovered Im. parva and Im. subalpina, are fully documented with taxonomic descriptions and illustrations, and a key to the taxa is provided. Geographically, Im. badia is widely distributed in Europe, North America and probably in Far East Asia, yet there is some intraspecific divergence between specimens from Europe and North America caused probably by geographic isolation. Imleria subalpina and Im. obscurebrunnea might diverge from each other relatively recently with the uplifts of the eastern Himalayas and Hengduan Mountains. An epitype collected from Sweden was designated for Im. badia.

This image is interpreted as a symbol of vital beauty in various forms in the works of nomanavis, progressive representatives of our classical literature. In the interpretation of the beauty of the lover by the word artists, the beauty of life is expressed, the love of man for life through the love of the lover. In classical poetry, especially in the noma genre, artistic means play an important role.

Abstract:
In 2015, Guglielmi and Badia discussed optimal strategies in a particular type of service system with two strategic servers. In their setup, each server can be either active or inactive and an active server can be requested to transmit a sequence of packets. The servers have varying probabilities of successfully transmitting when they are active, and both servers receive a unit reward if the sequence of packets is transmitted successfully. Guglielmi and Badia provided an analysis of optimal strategies in four scenarios: where each server does not know the other’s successful transmission probability; one of the two servers is always inactive; each server knows the other’s successful transmission probability and they are willing to cooperate.Unfortunately, the analysis by Guglielmi and Badia contained some errors. In this paper we correct these errors. We discuss three cases where both servers (I) communicate and cooperate; (II) neither communicate nor cooperate; (III) communicate but do not cooperate. In particular, we obtain the unique Nash equilibrium strategy in Case II through a Bayesian game formulation, and demonstrate that there is a region in the parameter space where there are multiple Nash equilibria in Case III. We also quantify the value of communication or cooperation by comparing the social welfare in the three cases, and propose possible regulations to make the Nash equilibrium strategy the socially optimal strategy for both Cases II and III.

Abstract:
Several studies have been conducted in the past to clarify various aspects of species in the genus Juniperus L. One critical group is Juniperus oxycedrus L., especially from the taxonomical point of view. For this reason, we have studied the ecology, taxonomy and distribution of the taxa in the J. oxycedrus group. From an ecological and distribution standpoint, in this work we use the ombroedaphoxeric index (Ioex) to explain the presence of Juniperus populations in ombrotypes that are not optimum for these taxa. The controversy over the taxonomy of J. oxycedrus subsp. badia (H. Gay) Debeaux and J. oxycedrus subsp. lagunae (Pau ex C. Vicioso) Rivas Mart. is clarified, and it is accepted as a valid name, J. oxycedrus subsp. badia. The phytochemical differences in essential oils (EO) are addressed and their similarities analyzed; greater similarities are observed between oxycedrus and badia, and between navicularis Gand. and macrocarpa (Sm.) Ball. species. The phytochemical, molecular and distribution differences allow J. oxycedrus subsp. macrocarpa (Sm.) Ball and J. navicularis Gand. to be maintained as species. The results obtained make it possible to establish the rank to which the taxa belong and allow clear discrimination between species in groups that are difficult to interpret. Ecological, bioclimatic, phytochemical and morphometric similarities allow us to subordinate the subsp. macrocarpa to the species J. navicularis.

Guglielmi and Badia provided an analysis of optimal strategies in four scenarios: where each server does not know the other’s successful transmission probability; one of the two servers is always inactive; each server knows the other’s successful transmission probability and they are willing to cooperate. Unfortunately, the analysis by Guglielmi and Badia contained some errors. We also quantify the value of communication or cooperation by comparing the social welfare in the three cases, and propose possible regulations to make the Nash equilibrium strategy the socially optimal strategy for both Cases II and III. doi:10.1017/S1446181120000048

Abstract:
In the 2017-2018 mushrooming seasons at the (Bohemian-Moravian Highlands near Dolní Rožínka) a total of 505 mushrooms belonging to 9 species were collected, and analyzed by gamma spectrometry for 137Cs activity. The maximum 137Cs activity of 575 Bq.kg-1 was detected in Boletus edulis species, what in native state, is just below the allowed limit. In contrast, in mushroom Imleria badia, which is reported to be associated with the highest cumulative capability from all fungi species, detected activity level was only 316 Bq. kg-1. However, differences in mean contamination values were not significant due to high variability. It was shown, that activity concentration is not dependent on the weight (size) of Imleria badia. Our results also confirmed generally well known lower 137Cs activity in the Russula species representatives belonging to the group of gills or lamella bearing mushrooms.

Abstract:
Experiments conducted in vitro and in vivo, as well as some preclinical trials for cancer therapeutics, support the antineoplastic properties of lectins. A screening of antitumoral activity on HT29 colon cancer cells, based on polypeptide characterization and specific lectin binding to HT29 cells membrane receptors, was performed in order to assess the bioactivities present in four Mediterranean plant species: Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. oxycedrus, Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. badia, Arbutus unedo and Corema album. Total leaf proteins from each species were evaluated with respect to cell viability and inhibitory activities on HT29 cells (cell migration, matrix metalloproteinase –MMP proteolytic activities). A discussion is presented on a possible mechanism justifying the specific binding of lectins to HT29 cell receptors. All species revealed the presence of proteins with affinity to HT29 cell glycosylated receptors, possibly explaining the differential antitumor activity exhibited by the two most promising species, Juniperus oxycedrus subsp. badia and Arbutus unedo.

Abstract:
Species within the genera Tomentella are among the most important ECM in forests. However, our knowledge about their functional characteristics is still rather limited. The ectomycorrhizae of Tomentella badia on Picea abies are described here in detail and compared to the non-identified ECM Piceirhiza obscura. A pseudoparenchymatous mantle formed by epidermoid cells is covered by heaps of epidermoid cells. This mantle type is regarded as a new one and designated as mantle type R. Many cells filled with dark blue contents and/or blue granules, together with clampless hyphae, are distinct characters of these ectomycorrhizae. Molecular-phylogenetic analysis of the ITS region was used for identification.

Abstract:
Jordan is located in an arid to semi-arid zone where water resources are limited. The threat of water shortages is already a reality and Jordan is struggling to face the scarcity of water. The north-eastern Badia semi-desert (zone) of the Kingdom is a large area with a small population. Constructing a dam can boost the local economy by supplying the water necessary for a community to meet its irrigation needs and develop the study area. In this study, ArcGIS software using a digital elevation model (DEM) map was utilized to determine possible sites where rainwater can be collected in north-eastern Badia. Possible watersheds were delineated using drainage networks. Seven sub-watersheds were characterized hydrologically by developing unit hydrographs, and water volume capacity was computed. Moreover, possible sites for earthen dams or tanks for water harvesting systems were investigated in different areas of Jordan. Rainwater harvesting could make water available during dry periods and its capture can also reduce soil erosion from runoff during wet periods.

Abstract:
This article presents the first known schoolbook printed especially for the elementary schools in the Badia valley (Ladinia, South Tyrol). It is a bilingual textbook for the parallel teaching of the languages Italian and German, realized at the end of the 19th century, printed in two volumes in 1906 and 1907. Above all, the article examines the historical context, in which the book was born, deepening the so-called «Enneberger Schulstreit», the virulent conflict between 1870 and 1895 regarding the use and teaching of languages in the schools of the Badia valley. Then the two authors, the teachers Peter Detomaso and Remigio Antoniolli, are presented. The central part of the article consists in a comparison of the «Ladin» book with the declared model of the work, the «Metodo pratico» of Giovanni Dolinar. Linguistic aspects (e.g.: grammar, spelling, characters/writing types, readings, writing compositions) and didactic aspects (e.g.: aims and objectives, suggestions for the teacher, proposed didactic methodologies), as well as contents (e.g.: religious texts, civics texts and historical, geographical, scientific texts) and the global structure of the book, are studied in depth.

Abstract:
The concept of the human oral microbiome was applied to understand health and disease, lifestyles, and dietary habits throughout part of human history. In the present study, we augment the understanding of ancient oral microbiomes by characterizing human dental calculus samples recovered from the ancient Abbey of Badia Pozzeveri (central Italy), with differences in socioeconomic status, time period, burial type, and sex. Samples dating from the Middle Ages (11th century) to the Industrial Revolution era (19th century) were characterized using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene V4 region. Consistent with previous studies, individuals from Badia Pozzeveri possessed commensal oral bacteria that resembled modern oral microbiomes. These results suggest that members of the oral microbiome are ubiquitous despite differences in geographical regions, time period, sex, and socioeconomic status. The presence of fecal bacteria could be in agreement with poor hygiene practices, consistent with the time period. Respiratory tract, nosocomial, and other rare pathogens detected in the dental calculus samples are intriguing and could suggest subject-specific comorbidities that could be reflected in the oral microbiome.
