Abstract:
The Australian small minnow mayfly fauna remains poorly known with only 21 described species (Webb & Suter 2010). Four species were described in the genus Baetis Leach: B. baddamsae Harker, 1950; B. confluens Harker, 1950; B. frater Tillyard, 1936; and B. soror Ulmer, 1908. Baetis soror and B. frater were both placed in Offadens Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty (Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty 1998, Suter 2000), but the two remaining species are still included in Baetis. Field experiments were carried out to determine whether there are diel variations in the effect of spates on baetid mayflies. Short-term spates were created in experimental streamside channels by pumping filtered creek water into selected channels at various times of day, resulting in three- or four-fold increases in discharge. Drift samples were collected before, during, and after spates; benthic samples were collected before and after. Drift rates of Baetis from channels in spate were higher than controls at all times of day. Natural increases in drift were observed in all channels after sun

Chlorine has a wide variety of applications in water treatment. Because of its disinfectant efficacy, it is used world wide for the treatment of potable water, sewage, swimming pools and for the control of nuisance organisms in cooling towers. A problem arises when such chlorinated water enters the natural environment, as chlorine's greatest advantage, i.e. its germicidal capacity, becomes its greatest disadvantage. In particular, the discharge of heated, chlorinated water from cooling towers and chlorinated, treated sewage into rivers have severe consequences for the riverine flora and fauna.

Abstract:
This paper presents the design, fabrication and characterization of a novel multiparametric microelectromechanical (MEMS) biosensor based on live mammalian cells with capabilities of sensing the toxicity of field water with minimized false-positive rate. This biosensor combines two biosensing techniques, resonant frequency measurements and electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) on a single chip. The sensor is based on the innovative placement of the working microelectrode for ECIS technique as the upper electrode of a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) resonator. This multiparametric

Recently, there has been interest to develop biosensors based on live mammalian cells to monitor the toxicity of water. The cell viability after exposure to toxic water can be monitored by electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) of the cell membrane. However, these impedance based toxicity sensors can only provide one single sensing endpoint (impedance measurement), and many toxicants cannot be detected at the concentration between Military Exposure Guideline levels and estimated Human Lethal Concentrations. The goal of this paper is to provide a rapid and sensitive sensing platform f

Dousman Creek, located in northeastern Iowa, is a Class ?B? coldwater stream that supports a trout population and is listed among the Outstanding Iowa Waters (Iowa Department of Natural Resources 2010, 2016). The Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network (Heartland Network) of the National Park Service (NPS) has been monitoring aquatic communities (fish and invertebrates) in Dousman Creek within Effigy Mounds National Monument (NM) since 2008. Corresponding physical habitat and water quality were also collected during biotic sampling. The objectives of this long-term monitoring program are to
