Microperforated panel (MPP) baffle sound absorbers are analogous to glass fiber parallel baffles frequently used in building air moving equipment or large exhaust systems. The MPP baffles in this study consists of two microperforated panels with honeycomb sandwiched between them. The MPP baffles are tested by positioning them in a duct and measuring the insertion loss where insertion loss is defined as the difference in outlet sound power without and with the baffled treatment. It is demonstrated that the insertion loss of the MPP baffle treatments is superior to single MPP sheets positioned i

Granular debris flow baffles are commonly installed in front of rigid barriers to dissipate flow energy and reduce the required barrier impact capacity. Despite the engineering value of baffles, their influence on rigid barrier impact is still not well understood. Abstract The structural optimization of baffle internals for fast pyrolysis of coal with particulate mixing and heat transfer in a downer reactor using the discrete element method (DEM) has been investigated in this research. The flow distribution varied widely at different parts of the exchanger. The vibration assessment based on conventional technology showed the exchanger experiencing both fluidelastic instability and turbulence buffeting. The exchanger failed within the first six months of operation, which would suggest FEI as the mechanism of failure. A consulting firm came in and added stakes within the top portion of the tubes. The FIV steadily got worse over a period

Abstract:
The linear problem of liquid sloshing in a cylindrical container with a vertical baffle is considered in the present paper. In this study, a theoretical oriented approach is developed for calculating the natural frequencies of liquid. The baffle is a thin-walled and open-ended cylindrical shell that is concentrically placed and partially submerged inside the container. The free surface of liquid is assumed to be perpendicular to axis of the container and is divided into two parts by the baffle. The method also captures the singular asymptotic behavior of the velocity potential at the sharp baf

The Federal Railroad Administration’s Office of Research and Development is conducting research into passenger locomotive fuel tank crashworthiness. A series of impact tests is being conducted to measure fuel tank deformation under two types of dynamic loading conditions — blunt and raking impacts. This program is intended to result in a better understanding of design features that improve the puncture resistance of passenger locomotive fuel tanks. One reason for performing this program is to aid in development of appropriate standards for puncture resistance to be applied to alternatively-des

Baffle Former Bolt (BFB) is a fastening part of Reactor Vessel Internals (RVI) of PWR. BFB is made of type 347 or 316CW (cold work) stainless steel and it is known to have the risk of cracking caused by Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking (IASCC) under high neutron flux and tensile stress. To evaluate the time to crack of BFB, BFB’s time-dependent stress change caused by irradiation creep (relaxation) and by the swelling deformation of a baffle structure should be obtained. The authors have developed the finite element (FE) analysis method to calculate time-dependent stress of BFB c

Abstract:
A numerical model for dispersion of hydrogen in hydrogen powered automobiles was established basing on finite element method with species transport and reaction module of FLUENT. And corresponding numerical simulations were done in order to analysis the dispersion of hydrogen due to leakage from different position of the storage cylinder on the automobiles. Also, the distribution of the hazard region due to hydrogen dispersion was obtained. The simulation results show that the baffle above the cylinder can accumulate the hydrogen. Therefore, the high concentration region of hydrogen exists nea

Abstract:
Mineral resources of Baffin Island include iron (Mary River), diamonds, carbonate-hosted zinc and lead (Nanisivik), nickel, copper, platinum group elements, uranium, thorium, gemstones (sapphire, spinel, lapis lazuli), carving stone, and coal. Iron deposits include the Mary River No. 1 to 4 deposits of northern Baffin Island, which came into production in 2015 and contain 586 Mt grading 66% Fe. The Mesoproterozoic Borden Basin hosts the Nanisivik deposit, mined between 1976 and 2002; this is a Mississippi Valley-type deposit and contains 9.0% Zn, 0.7% Pb, and 41 ppm Ag. Exploration for hydrocarbons began in the Labrador-Baffin Seaway in the 1960s; activity along the Labrador margin is still ongoing. A moratorium on exploration activities in the Canadian Arctic was enacted in 2016, halting drilling and data acquisition in western Davis Strait and along the Baffin Island margin. The exploration for hydrocarbons along the West Greenland margin ceased in 2021. Despite the presence of all hydrocarbon system elements as well as direct indicators of at least one working hydrocarbon system (e.g. slicks and/or seeps, oil and/or gas shows), no commercially viable accum

Abstract:
Flexible barriers are one of the most effective protective structures, which have been widely used for the mitigation of rockfalls. As the only compression members in a flexible barrier system, steel posts maintain the integrity of the interception structure to keep the function of the system. Due to the random trajectories of rockfalls, steel posts may be impacted by boulders directly. The impact scenario may result in the failure of the post and even the collapse of the system. In this paper, firstly, steel baffles were proposed to be an additional structural countermeasure to avoid the dire
