ABSTRACTIn eastern Brazil, most indigenous languages were only superficially documented before becoming extinct. Besides hampering attempts at genetic classification of the languages of the region, the lack of linguistic data seriously limits our knowledge of possible cultural contacts among the several tribes listed by colonial sources. Notwithstanding that, this paper attempts to provide a few additional pieces for the ethnographic puzzle which is eastern Brazil, focusing on loanwords found in Kipeá, a Karirí language once spoken in the present-day states of Bahia and Sergipe, in northeastern Brazil. Besides allowing a glimpse into situations of language contact in eastern Brazil, the identification of previously unsuspected loanwords may contribute to a better understanding of phonological aspects of Kipeá.Keywords: Language contact; Borrowings; Macro-Jê. RESUMOA maioria das línguas indígenas originalmente faladas no leste brasileiro se extinguiram antes que pudessem ter sido devidamente documentadas. Além de dificultar os estudos das possíveis relações genéticas entre tais línguas, a falta de dados limita, de maneira significativa, o conhecimento de possíveis contatos culturais entre as tribos da região. Apesar disto, este artigo tenta fornecer peças adicionais para o quebra-cabeças etnográfico que é o leste brasileiro, concentrando-se no estudo de empréstimos em Kipeá (família Karirí, tronco Macro-Jê), língua outrora falada em áreas hoje pertencentes aos Estados da Bahia e Sergipe. Abstract English Language Teaching in Brazil has been challenged by the emerging universities resulted from the presidency terms of Lula and Dilma. In our case, the Universidade Federal do Sul da Bahia is one of the last universities to be founded in a black-majority state. In this paper, I discuss ethnicity and race at play in the context of reading activities during three courses taught in one year-period whereby activities concerning regional context and encouraging discussion on racism were used to employ a more inclusive methodology in order to engage black students. The results point out a positive engagement by the students if they have the inclusion of their own identities.

Resumo: O objetivo deste artigo é primeiramente chamar a atenção para a importância dos relatos de Histórias de vida de atores envolvidos no espaço da escola pública como abordagem de investigação e de formação a estudantes de língua francesa da Universidade Federal do Sul da Bahia. O texto apresenta os diferentes termos advindos na corrente de construção de espaços de vida e de narrativa no universo das Ciências Humanas: biografia, autobiografia, histórias de vida. Em seguida, reflete-se sobre as extensões da prática biográfica, através do estado da arte, para, finalmente, chegar no domínio de pesquisa e prática do ensino-aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras, mais especificamente de língua francesa. Fundamentam este estudo obras organizadas por grupos de trabalho brasileiros e franceses. Finalizamos com a apresentação de nosso projeto de pesquisa-ensino-extensão aplicado em Porto Seguro, Bahia, integrando os atores da escola pública, estudantes da universidade e Histórias de vida.Palavras-chave: histórias de vida; ciências humanas; integração escola-universidade; língua francesa.Abstract: The aim of this paper is firstly to call attention to the importance that reports on life stories of actors involved in the public school realm have as an investigative approach to training French language students at Southern Bahia Federal University. The text shows different terms coming from the thread of research built upon life spaces and narrative within the Human Sciences: biographies, autobiographies, life stories. Then we ponder over the extensions of biographical practice, through the state of the art, in order to finally reach the research and practice domain of foreign language teaching-learning, specifically, French. The study is based on references organized by Brazilian and French work groups. We conclude with the presentation of our research-teaching-extension project applied to Porto Seguro, Bahia, which integrates the actors of public schools, university students and life stories.Keywords: life stories; human sciences; school-university integration; French.

<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-ansi-language: PT-BR; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA;">Vazão excedente pode ser definida como o volume de água em uma bacia hidrográfica que excede o volume outorgável, o qual, por sua vez, é definido com base em critérios bastante restritivos de modo a permitir o atendimento do volume outorgado mesmo em períodos de estiagem. Trabalhos recentes têm proposto a alocação desta vazão excedente entre os usuários, minimizando os prejuízos decorrentes da não utilização da mesma. Algoritmos evolucionários multiobjetivo têm se destacado na otimização de problemas complexos e diversas técnicas têm sido desenvolvidas para considerar as restrições específicas do problema e melhorar o seu desempenho. Neste trabalho utilizamos o algoritmo evolucionário multiobjetivo SPEA2 para alocar a vazão excedente em uma bacia hidrográfica e analisamos o ganho de desempenho obtido pela introdução de técnicas de tratamento das restrições neste algoritmo. Os resultados demonstram a importância da utilização das técnicas de tratamento das restrições, sobretudo da utilização dos operadores direcionados.</span>

The purpose of the study is to cast the light on Jordanian English teachers in the Southern Badia views on the importance of communicative language teaching. CLT has indicated the track for certain procedures and strategies to accomplish essential goals for teaching English language. They seek to find the appropriate to teach English for their students and they work hard to make teaching English more effective in their classes.

This article presents a pedagogical proposal that aims to build a multimodal video with the lyrics of Dorival Caymmi's songs, involving the multiliteracy (linguistic, visual, gestural, spatial and audio) in order to develop the communicative capacity of the deaf subjects involved in the teaching-learning process creating contexts of real productions, enabling multiple activities and, above all, activities that value the Bakhtinian principle of interaction, dialogism. The proposal is organized based on the procedures for the presentation of communication situations involving multimodal discursive genres considering students as protagonists of knowledge. The project was developed in the Specialized Educational Assistance - SEA, in the school context that has as a reference a bilingual perspective, where students use the Brazilian Sign Language as their first language (L1) and Portuguese in written form as a second language (L2), involving the areas of Libras and written Portuguese in order to bring deaf children closer to literacy practices. The choice of the author was due to the celebration of the artist centenary, his compositions that portray and value Bahia, the fact that the students are from Bahia and thinking about the level of complexity of the texts appropriate for the understanding of the deaf students in question.

Abstract This paper describes the count/mass distinction in Patxohã, a revitalized language spoken in Bahia and Minas Gerais, Brazil. We observe that only count nouns can be directly combined with numerals and that only count nouns can co-occur with plural determiners. Furthermore, only count nouns can be combined with size adjectives. As for quantifiers, we observe that at least one quantifier in the language (nitxi) can be combined with count and mass nouns, but trigger different interpretations depending on the noun it is combined with. We also discuss the use of container phrases in counting and measuring contexts.

Introduction: Prematurity, low birth weight and multiple births are risk factors for structural changes in the brain, as well as deviations in motor, cognitive, social and language development.
Objective: To describe language findings and investigate the presence of neurological changes in preterm twins born at two years of age.
Method: This is a cross-sectional study based on data analysis of the medical records of six pairs of low birth weight preterm twins, of both sexes, at two years of age, attended to at the State Center for the Prevention and Rehabilitation of Persons withDisabilities - CEPRED, in Salvador-Bahia-Brazil. To this end, information regarding birth was collected; the clinical history; the imaging exams; and the speech, neurological and interdisciplinary assessments.
Results: preterm twins had atypical language development and neurological changes that may compromise oral language development. From the neurological point of view, abnormalities common to the premature newborn, such as peri-intraventricular hemorrhage, were observed.
Conclusion: Multiple births associated with prematurity and low birth weight may pose risks to the childs language acquisition.

This article presents the first known schoolbook printed especially for the elementary schools in the Badia valley (Ladinia, South Tyrol). It is a bilingual textbook for the parallel teaching of the languages Italian and German, realized at the end of the 19th century, printed in two volumes in 1906 and 1907. Above all, the article examines the historical context, in which the book was born, deepening the so-called «Enneberger Schulstreit», the virulent conflict between 1870 and 1895 regarding the use and teaching of languages in the schools of the Badia valley. Then the two authors, the teachers Peter Detomaso and Remigio Antoniolli, are presented. The central part of the article consists in a comparison of the «Ladin» book with the declared model of the work, the «Metodo pratico» of Giovanni Dolinar. Linguistic aspects (e.g.: grammar, spelling, characters/writing types, readings, writing compositions) and didactic aspects (e.g.: aims and objectives, suggestions for the teacher, proposed didactic methodologies), as well as contents (e.g.: religious texts, civics texts and historical, geographical, scientific texts) and the global structure of the book, are studied in depth.

Esta dissertação, de natureza empírica e de cunho predominantemente descritivo, buscou registrar aspectos fonéticos em variação em estudantes de duas áreas rurais do município de Catu-Ba. Procurou também verificar se e até que ponto os traços em variação na fala espontânea daqueles indivíduos se refletem na escrita monitorada dos mesmos. Além disso, tentou desenvolver uma reflexão sobre as implicações pedagógicas da variação lingüística. A metodologia utilizada permitiu a constituição de um corpus composto de duas amostras: a primeira resultante da gravação de cerca de dez horas de entrevistas com 14 estudantes da primeira e da quarta séries do Ensino Fundamental do primeiro ciclo de duas escolas municipais; a segunda resultou da aplicação de um teste com os mesmos estudantes em que eles deveriam escrever palavras sujeitas às variações que constituíram objeto da pesquisa. Os resultados sinalizaram para a ocorrência diminuta, na segunda amostra, dos fatos variáveis na fala espontânea dos estudantes em foco.

Abstract: This work is a deseription of the null subjeet on a little studied language variety, the ordinary Portuguese spoken in bahian rural communities. This dissertation aims at investigating how two groups of teachers and future teachers of English evaluate their undergraduate courses: - Letters Portuguese and English, in 1997 and Letters - English in 2007, in a public university in the state of Bahia. It also tries to understand the reasons that contribute to these teachers rejection to work as teachers, specially, as English teachers. In order to support this investigation, I used as theoretical references: Celani (1996, 2000, 2004), Moita Lopes (1996, 2005), Almeida Filho (1993, 1999, 2007), Leffa (1999), Freire (1986, 1996), Prabhu (1990) and Freeman (1989, 2000). Questionnaires, interviews and the curricula of the two courseswere used as research instruments. This research has an ethnographic qualitative interpretative nature (Chizzotti (2006) and can be seen as a case study (Leffa, 2006) in which I want to understand the reasons why those teachers don t want to teach English. The results indicate that the frequent teachers replacement during the course, the students lack of interest in the course, the lack of information about the professional possibilities offered by the course, the low salary and the difficulties in dealing with new technologies, contributed to discouraging Letters students to want to become teachers. This led to changes in their academic education and suggested the need for continued teacher education
Esta dissertação tem como objetivo investigar as concepções sobre o curso de formação e o campo de atuação de dois grupos: professores que fizeram curso de Graduação em Letras, Habilitação em Português, Inglês e Literaturas em 1997, e professores que fizeram o curso de Letras/Inglês em 2007, em uma universidade do interior da Bahia. Também procura entender as razões que levam os egressos desses cursos a não querer trabalhar como professor (de inglês). Para embasar esta investigação, utilizei como aportes teóricos: Celani (1996, 2000, 2004), Moita Lopes (1996, 2005), Almeida Filho (1993, 1999, 2007), Leffa (1999), Freire (1986 , 1996), Prabhu (1990), Freeman (1989, 2000). É uma pesquisa de natureza etnográfica qualitativa interpretativista (Chizzotti, 2006) e um estudo de caso (Leffa, 2006), em que procuro entender os motivos que levam os professores a não quererem dar aulas (de inglês). Como instrumentos de pesquisa, utilizei questionários, entrevistas e os fluxogramas dos dois cursos. Os dados foram analisados de acordo com a metodologia proposta, a fim de encontrar no todo das respostas obtidas, informações que justificassem a resistência ao ensino. A interpretação feita levou-me a analisar os dados de acordo com as minhas representações, tendo como base a fundamentação teórica. Os resultados indicam que a troca constante de professor durante o curso de formação, o desinteresse de muitos alunos pelo curso, a falta de conhecimento das possibilidades profissionais que o curso oferece, o baixo salário e as dificuldades encontradas para lidar com as novas tecnologias em sala de aula, são aspectos que certamente desestimulam os estudantes do curso de Letras a atuarem como professores. Isso implica mudanças na sua formação acadêmica e indica a necessidade de um programa de formação continuada do professor

A presente dissertação apresenta a edição semidiplomática de documentos eclesiásticos, manuscritos entre meados do século XVIII e fim do XIX, provenientes do Convento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Lapa, localizado em Salvador Bahia. Este estudo visa fornecer fonte fidedigna para futuros estudos filológicos, históricos, culturais, religiosos e linguísticos do período. O corpus é constituído de 63 (sessenta e três) fólios avulsos, totalizando um conjunto de 46 (quarenta e seis) documentos. Para complementar a edição, apresenta-se a contextualização histórica dos documentos, detalhando a vida monacal das religiosas que possuem a guarda da documentação. Também aborda-se o estudo dos aspectos codicológicos, diplomáticos e paleográficos. Elaboraram-se os verbetes de cada documento, adaptando-os segundo o estudo apresentado pelo Projeto Resgate. As fichas com a descrição codicológica dos documentos estudados organizam e apresentam os principais elementos sobre a materialidade do corpus. O estudo paleográfico apresenta um quadro contrastivo entre a escrita dos cinco punhos mais variáveis no corpus. Esse corpus é relevante para o estudo da história do período, da instituição e representativo do estado de língua da época.This thesis presents a semidiplomatic edition of Church documents, manuscripts from the mid eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, from the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Lapa, Salvador Bahia. This study aims to provide a reliable source for future philological studies, historical, cultural, religious and linguistic studies of the period. The corpus is constitued of 63 (sixty three) loose folios, totaling a set of 46 (forty six) documents. Complementing the issue, it presents the historical context of the documents. It also addresses the study aspects of aspects codicological, diplomatic and paleography. Were of each document was studies elabored, adapting them acording studies of the study presented by the Projeto Resgate. The codicological chips organize and present the main elements that detail the mateariality of the corpus of each item, besides the description of the origin of the paper, etc. The palaeographic study presents the picture of five wrists, which deals with the contrastive of the spelling of period in question. This corpus is relevant to the study of the history of the period, the institution and representative of state language studies of the time.

Este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre a variação no uso do modo subjuntivo nas orações relativas e completivas no falar de quatro comunidades rurais afro-brasileiras do interior do Estado da Bahia. Com o suporte teórico-metodológico da sociolingüística variacionista e o recurso ao pacote de programas VARBRUL para o processamento quantitativo dos dados lingüísticos, buscou analisar o encaixamento desse processo variável na estrutura lingüística e social das comunidades de fala estudadas. Não obstante a reduzida faixa de variação encontrada, alguns condicionamentos lingüísticos e sociais foram identificados. Do ponto de vista lingüístico, as formas do modo subjuntivo ocorrem com maior freqüência em duas situações: (i) uma de base morfológica, em que o uso das formas de subjuntivo se dá tanto com verbos quanto com o tempo em que a oposição subjuntivo versus indicativo é mais saliente; (ii) outra de base semântica, em que o contexto de irrealidade tende a favorecer o uso do modo subjuntivo. A investigação aponta um reduzido uso do subjuntivo na gramática das comunidades rurais afro-brasileiras quando comparado com o que se observa na norma culta, o que confirma a idéia de uma redução na morfologia flexional dessa variedade afro-brasileira do PB em função do contato entre línguas. Além disso, diferentemente do que se registra em pesquisas no português urbano, tendo como base os resultados obtidos nessas comunidades, pode constatar que o subjuntivo vem ganhando ambiente antes ocupado apenas pelas formas do indicativo, o que demonstra a aquisição das formas do subjuntivo pelos falantes dessas comunidades, confirmando a realidade bipolarizada do português do Brasil e, assim, a co-ocorrência de pelo menos duas gramáticas no PB: uma referente ao português urbano culto e outra referente ao português rural, no qual se inclui o afro-brasileiro.

Resumo: Essa dissertação investiga, sob a perspectiva da linha gerativista diacrônica, as variadas realizações do objeto direto anafórico no Português Brasileiro, mais especificamente, no dialeto baiano, em textos jornalísticos publicados em periódicos que circularam na cidade de Salvador (BA). O corpus da pesquisa foi composto por sete jornais, distribuídos em três épocas distintas: de 1833 a 1850 (Diário da Bahia, Novo Diário da Bahia e O Atheneo), de 1898 a 1900 (Correio de Notícias e Jornal de Notícias) e de 1945 a 1948 (Diário da Bahia e Diário de Notícias). A partir da constatação obtida por diversos estudos sincrônicos (cf. Duarte (1986), Corrêa (1991), Averbug (2000), Magalhães (2006)), e diacrônicos (cf. Cyrino (1994)) de que há um aumento do uso de uma categoria vazia na posição de objeto em Português Brasileiro em decorrência da diminuição do uso de clíticos, objetivamos investigar as formas de realização do objeto direto anafórico em textos formais, no intuito de identificar se, nesse tipo de texto, tal mudança também se evidenciaria. Além de analisar as variadas estratégias de realização dessa posição, examinamos também os fatores que as condicionam, uma vez que estes também sofreram mudança ao longo do tempo (cf. Cyrino (1994), Figueiredo (2009)). A análise dos dados revelou que a mudança atestada nos estudos supracitados também se verifica na análise dos textos formais, apesar do seu caráter conservador e a despeito da norma culta influenciar o uso de determinadas formas gramaticais na escrita. Além de um aumento dos objetos nulos nos dados em detrimento do uso dos clíticos, a análise dos condicionamentos linguísticos mostrou que essa categoria tem sido utilizada ao longo do tempo em contextos cada vez menos restritos, sendo favorecida apenas pela correspondência sintática entre essa variante e o seu DP antecedente/ referente
Abstract: This dissertation investigates, from a diachronic generative perspective, the varied uses of the anaphoric direct object in Brazilian Portuguese, more specifically, in the dialect spoken in Bahia, in journalistic texts published in periodicals that circulated in Salvador (BA). The corpus of this research was composed by seven newspapers, distributed across three distinct periods: from 1833 to 1850 (Diário da Bahia, Novo Diário da Bahia and O Atheneo), 1898 to 1900 (Correio de Notícias and Jornal de Notícias) and 1945 to 1948 (Diário da Bahia and Diário de Notícias). From the finding obtained from various synchronic and diachronic studies (cf. Duarte (1986), Corrêa (1991), Cyrino (1994), Averbug (2000), Magalhães (2006)) that there is an increase in the use of an empty category in position of the object in Brazilian Portuguese, as a result of the declining use of clitics, we aim to investigate the ways to perform the anaphoric direct object in formal texts, in order to identify whether, in this type of text, such change would also be evident. Besides analyzing the various strategies of performing this position, we also examined the factors that influence them, since these factors also suffered change over time (cf. Cyrino (1994), Figueiredo (2009)). The data analysis revealed that the change attested on the mentioned studies also applies to the analysis of formal texts, despite of its conversationalist character and in spite of the standard use of language influences the use of certain grammatical forms in the writing. Besides an increase of null objects in the data over the use of clitics, the analysis of linguistic conditioning showed that this category has been used over time in contexts less and less restricted, being favored only by syntactic correspondence between this variant and its antecedent/referent DP

What kind of dynamics in language learning can we find in a historically multilingual context where the languages of the newly migrated speakers have been added? The paper presents a brief overview of the characteristics that could influence plurilingual learning for students in the Ladin area (Gardena, Badia and Fassa valleys) and in the Italian or German school systems in the province of Bolzano, Italy. Examples of transfer, translanguaging with two and more languages, reflections on the influence of prestige varieties and the challenges in the school system to promote effective multilingualism will be proposed.

Chapter 5 focuses on the Orquestra Afrosinfônica, a group led by Bira Marques that attempts to indigenize symphonic music in Bahia by drawing on Afro-Bahian genres such as Candomblé and carnival music. It discusses the problematic division between “erudite” and “popular” music in Brazil in relation with Marques’s rhetoric about rhythm, melody, and harmony. The analysis engages the director’s use of timelines, modal and tonal harmonies, lyrics in African languages, rhythms used by Brazilian nationalistic composers, Afro-Bahian and symphonic percussion, and black bodies. It demonstrates how and why the tropes of African rhythmicity and percussiveness are mainly hidden in discourse but become plain in practice. The director’s visit to Namibia and his collaboration with two Angolan musicians in Bahia are seen to clarify his position in regard to the relationship between Candomblé and Christianity and his view of Bahia as a hyperreal Africa.

Ato Quayson grounds his analysis of cosmopolitanism in urban social space, where he finds cosmopolitanism visible in the streets—in the self-fashioning of the youth of Accra, for example, defined by overlapping histories manifest in the city’s signs and slogans, the music, the food, the architecture, the shape of the streets themselves. While Silviano Santiago points out the influence on Brazilian popular cosmopolitanism of the cultures brought over by slaves from Africa, Quayson symmetrically reveals the influence of former slaves from Brazil who settled in Accra. The Tabon were former slaves who migrated to Ghana in 1836, probably in the aftermath of the 1835 Muslim slave rebellion in Bahia. They brought with them both a Portuguese language, which served them well when Portuguese pidgin was still prevalent in mercantile networks, and skills and trades vital for developing the urban street culture of Accra and tapping into transnational networks of commerce.
