Lead (Pb) levels in soils for different sites in Baghdad were determined to assess the soil contamination by lead in the city. Around sixty-three soil samples were collected as indicator of Pb pollution from different sources. The mean Pb concentrations in the soils ranging from 15 mg Pb/kg at the bus station, 800-2300 mg Pb/kg in the city center, and 8-350 mg Pb/kg along the highway. Value up to 9350 mg Pb/kg found in the soils near the batteries factory. The mean Pb concentrations in the city centre were substantially higher than values found in other places; they were also higher than the s

Abstract This study was conducted to assess soil pollution with some selected elements according to the use of international pollution standards. Three areas were selected (Baghdad, Hilla, Diwaniyah) along both sides of the outer highway extending from Diwaniyah to Baghdad at specific distances ranging from (10, 20, 50, and 100 m) and surface depths of (30 cm). The results showed, through international pollution standards, all soils were contaminated with heavy elements (Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn), which were contaminated between medium to heavy elements but did not exceed internationally allowed limits

Abstract Mesopotamia, the ‘land between the rivers’, is the name given by the Greek historian Polybius (second century BC) to the region enclosed between the Tigris and the Euphrates in southern Iraq (Fig. 4.1). In the 400 miles between Baghdad and the Persian Gulf, the land drops only about 30 feet (9 metres). The great rivers run slowly, often changing their courses and depositing enormous quantities of fertile silt. It has been calculated that the Tigris and Euphrates remove three million tons of eroded material a day from the highlands of Iraq, and deposit it on the plains. The resulting s

This case provides a window into the mobilization of Iraqi military personnel and veterans, one of the strongest sources of Sunni opposition.
