Abstract:The breeding system of Laguncularia racemosa is variable among populations; some populations are androdioecious while other populations lack male plants. To determine whether androdioecy is widespread in L. racemosa, 65 populations were surveyed in Florida and the Bahamas. Fruits are water-dispersed, so the observed distribution of breeding systems was compared to local and regional water currents in order to determine whether dispersal could be important to the maintenance of male plants in androdioecious populations. This sediment is supplied to the growing stromatolite surfaces by strong tidal currents which lift grains into suspension and sweep migrating dunes over the columns. First, is Standard English as spoken in the Bahamas still following the traditional British norm or has it shifted toward an American orientation; and second, what role does the local creole play in shaping the variety? Many migrants winter on densely populated islands which have been extensively deforested. Current estimates show that only 21% of the land area, or approximately five million hectares, remain in forest on Caribbean and Bahamian islands, indicating that most of the major deforestation has already occurred. Undersea navigation, launch/retrieval methods and surveying sensors designed for submersible use are, in the main, unsatisfactory, but their development is being pursued. The different contributions examine these varieties of English against the backdrop of current World Englishes theorising, with a special focus on the Extra- and Intra-territorial Forces (EIF) Model (Buschfeld and Kautzsch 2017). Building on the general conception of Schneider’s (2003, 2007) Dynamic Model, the EIF Model aims at integrating postcolonial and non-postcolonial Englishes in a unified framework of World Englishes. Several questions guide the chapter's review: (1) How are OERs currently utilised in the Caribbean region? (2) What challenges must be overcome in order for UB to address concerns of the Bahamian government, academic faculty/staff, students, and future accreditation standards necessary for development and recognition in the region and internationally as a credentialed institution? (3) What are the benefits for a newly minted university to implement OER within the context of national development? The chapter concludes with recommendations for UB to consider as it transitions to providing a world class education for the citizens of The Bahamas.

Abstract:
This paper examines how the Model of Extra- and Intra-territorial Forces (EIF; Buschfeld and Kautzsch 2016), an offshoot and further development of Schneider’s Dynamic Model (2007), fares in explaining the coming-into-being and current situation of Bahamian Englishes. By integrating colonial and postcolonial forces into a unified account, the EIF Model elegantly accounts for the long-standing regional and supra-regional ties linking the Bahamas with Britain and the United States and for how they have led to the sociolinguistic and linguistic complexity characterizing the Bahamian situation today. The paper also offers some critical remarks on developmental models of World Englishes in general; these revolve around the ideas of varieties as sets of features, that a variety’s most natural basis is the nation, and that all varieties of English undergo not just change but evolution, culminating in a more or less homogeneous standard variety.

Abstract:
The book ends with a deeper reflection on what it means to understand sites of resistance and rebellion through an analysis the potential of art tourism and the politics of sex and sexual labor in the Caribbean within the context of this overwhelming production of paradise. The investigation of resisting paradise is pushed further through other sites of rebellion and assertions of cultural and sexual freedom. The potential new model of art and culture tourism is examined in the Bahamas at Baha Mar Resorts and The Current Art Team and their work in creating space and empowering local artists. The chapter also includes the troubling issue of sex and sexuality within the context of paradise in order to search for another site of resistance through a rethinking of sexual labor, transactional sex, and sexual agency. Through auto-ethnography and Kamala Kempadoo’s work on Caribbean sexuality and tourism, the author explores the tensions and contending forces of sexuality and respectability and how they are deeply complicated through tourism.

Abstract.—Mangrove ecosystems are being lost globally at an alarming rate due to deforestation, reclamation, and urbanization. Not only is the loss of these ecosystems detrimental to the commercially and ecologically important marine species they support, there is also a reduction in the ecosystem services they provide, namely mitigating rising carbon dioxide levels by serving as carbon sinks. These ecosystems, labeled as “blue carbon” sinks, potentially sequester more than 10 times the carbon that tropical and temperate ecosystems do. Thus, conservation and restoration of these blue carbon sinks is imperative. We explored how much carbon is currently stored in dwarf red mangrove Rhizophora mangle biomass in tidal creeks of Eleuthera, Bahamas. In October of 2012, four sites were selected near Cape Eleuthera, maximizing site variability. All sampling was done from six plots established at each site. The quantity of carbon stored in mangroves was determined from plant biomass, which was extrapolated from plant volumes. Mangrove volumes were determined from growth parameters of individuals. It was observed that there were large differences from site to site in number of individuals, sediment depth, biomass accumulation, and carbon allocation of mangroves, but the total amount of carbon stored from site to site in mangroves did not differ. The site with the greatest biomass and carbon storage also had the greatest sediment depth, suggesting a correlation between the two. Regardless of the site to site variability, mangroves proved to be good stores for carbon. Future work should search for the factors that explain site to site variability.

In Malaysia, adoption of the mobile application for smartphones and tablet computers are growing in number and are actively applied in healthcare. However, limited studies were found looking at mHealth app that is focusing on Malaysia context. This study aims to examine the current mHealth app that is available in Malaysia. This study also seeks to rank the pricing of top paid apps from two major platforms, Apple iOS, and Android PlayStore. In mid-2016, the authors overviewed the Medical app and Health and Fitness category from two dominant platforms; Apple iOS and Android Play Store. The only app that was related to human healthcare, described in Bahasa Malaysia or English, was examined. Most app that is designed specifically for Malaysia is informational apps, which provide information on healthcare and medical information. The study also reveals that most consumers in Malaysia are ready and are willing to pay for mHealth app. Majority of app price is between RM10.01 to RM25.
